AB - Nanostructured and granular polyanilines (PANIs) and their composites with zeolite ZSM-5, synthesized by the oxidative polymerization of aniline in water and aqueous solution of sulfuric acid, are evaluated as adsorbents of the organic herbicide glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] in aqueous solution. The protonated and deprotonated forms of synthesized materials were characterized by elemental and thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, FTIR, Raman and UV-Vis spectroscopies, X-ray powder diffraction, and nitrogen physisorption measurements. The adsorption isotherms of glyphosate on studied materials were best fitted by Freundlich and Langmuir-Freundlich models. The adsorption characteristics of the investigated PANIs and PANI/ZSM-5 composites were found to be much more influenced by the oxidation state and protonation level of PANI in the adsorbents then by the textural and morphological properties of materials. The highest adsorption of glyphosate among all investigated PANI and PANI/ZSM-5 samples, as well as pure ZSM-5, exhibited the deprotonated granular PANI which was synthesized in sulfuric acid medium (98.5 mg/g). High adsorption capacity also showed the deprotonated PANI/ZSM-5 composite with similar to 50% of zeolite (61.9 mg/g) and the protonated nanostructured PANI (59.9 mg/g), both materials prepared in water without added acid.

AB - In this work Al,Fe-pillared clays (PILCs) were applied as heterogeneous catalysts in catalytic wet peroxide oxidation of tartrazine azo-dye in water. A series of We PILCs with different Fe3+ content were synthesized. The degree of Fe incorporation into PILCs was in accordance with the amounts of introduced Fe. The influence of Fe content and reaction temperature on the efficiency of the decolorization of tartrazine solutions was investigated. The adsorption on PILCs was almost independent on temperature and rather inefficient. The adsorption slightly increased with increasing Fe3+ content. Simultaneous application of H2O2 and the Fe-containing PILCs significantly improved dye removal. Higher Fe content led to more efficient catalytic removal of the dye. Increased temperature did not affect adsorption while it drastically increased the catalytic removal of the dye. The stability and reusability of the PILC catalysts was confirmed.

AB - The deep oxidation of n-hexane was studied over Pt catalysts with small and large Pt crystallites, promoted by MnOx. The Mn was deposited on the Pt/Al2O3 by deposition-precipitation method using two alkalis, ammonia and dimethylamine. The strength of the base influenced morphology and performances of Mn-Pt catalysts. Ammonia formed mostly spherical structure of manganese oxide, while dimethylamine created fibrous needle-like shape of MnOx, typical for cryptomelane phase of manganese oxide. This was confirmed by XPS results that show an oxidation state of Mn close to that for cryptomelane. The Pt-Mn catalysts were more active than catalysts containing Pt only. Promoting effect of MnOx is more pronounced for larger Pt crystallites. Among Pt-Mn samples, catalysts synthesized with dimethylamine exhibited the highest activities. Mobility and reactivity of oxygen from Pt-O-Mn sites associated with cryptomelane phase may be responsible for increased activity.

AB - Active porous alumina was prepared via a sol-gel method and subjected to thermal treatment in the temperature range 500-1200 °C. The addition of lanthanum effectively inhibited the surface area loss of the aluminas. Fractal analysis from nitrogen adsorption isotherm was used to study the pore surface roughness of alumina samples with different chemical compositions (PEG, PEG and lanthanum) and calcinations conditions in terms of the surface fractal dimension, d. The Mahnke and Mögel (MM) model was used to determine the value of d of La(III)-doped alumina. Following the MM model, the d value of the activated aluminas increased as the calcination temperature increased from 500 to 700 °C but decreased after calcination at 1000, 1100 and 1200 °C. The addition of polyethylene glycol (PEG 5600) to the boehmite sol reduced the surface fractal of the activated alumina due to the heterogeneous distribution of the pores. With increasing La(III) concentration from 0.015 to 0.045 mol La(III)/mol Al(III), the d value of La-modified alumina samples decreased, indicating a smoother surface. The obtained PEG+La-doped boehmite sol can be used as a precursor dispersion for the deposition of mesoporous alumina coatings on stainless steel foil, by the spray pyrolysis method.

AB - Self-assembled conducting, paramagnetic polyaniline nanotubes have been synthesized by the oxidative polymerization of aniline with ammonium peroxydisulfate in aqueous medium in the presence of zeolite HZSM-5, without added acid. The influence of initial zeolite/aniline weight ratio on the conductivity, molecular and supramolecular structure, paramagnetic characteristics, thermal stability, and specific surface area of poly aniline/zeolite composites was studied. The conducting (∼10-2S cm-1), semiconducting (3 × 10-5 S cm-1), and nonconducting (5 × 10-9 S cm-1) composites are produced using the zeolite/aniline weight ratios 1, 5, and 10, respectively. The coexistence of polyaniline nanotubes, which have a typical outer diameter of 70-170 nm and an inner diameter of 5-50 nm, accompanied by nanorods with a diameter of 60-100 nm and polyaniline/zeolite mesoporous aggregates, distinct from the morphology of mieroporous zeolite HZSM-5, was proved in the conducting nanocomposite by scanning and transmission electron microscopies. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the presence of polyaniline in the form of conducting emeraldine salt and suggested significant interaction of polyaniline with zeolite. The evolution of molecular and supramolecular structure of polyaniline in the presence of zeolite was discussed.

AB - Two new series of perovskite-type oxides LaMO3 (M = Mg, Ti, Fe) with different ratio Mg/Fe (MF) and Ti/Fe (TF) in the B cation site were prepared by annealing the precursor, obtained by the mechanochemical activation (MCA) of constituent metal oxides, at 1000 degrees C in air. In addition, two closely related perovskites LaFeO3 (LF) and LaTi0.5Mg0.5O3 (TM (50:50)) were synthesized in the similar way. Using MCA method, perovskites were obtained in rather short time and at room temperature. The samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), temperature programmed desorption of oxygen (TPD), Mossbauer spectroscopy, BET surface area measurements and tested in methane deep oxidation. According to XRPD analysis all synthesized samples are almost single perovskite phase, with trace amounts of La2O3 phase. Data of Mossbauer spectroscopy identify Fe 31 in octahedral coordination. The activity of perovskite in methane deep oxidation increases in the order TM (50:50) LT MF series LT TF series. Higher activity of TF samples in respect to MF with similar Fe content can be related to the structural characteristic., mainly to the presence of predominantly most labile oxygen species evidenced by TPD at lowest temperature of oxygen evaluation. In used experimental conditions, the Fe substituted perovskite are thermal stable up to the temperature of 850 degrees C. The stability of Fe active sites is probably the most important parameter responsible for thermal stability of perovskite, but the atomic surface composition also should be taken into account.

AB - Active porous alumina coatings were obtained by deposition of boehmite sol on stainless steel (SS) substrate by spray pyrolysis method. The temperature and the doping of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and La3+ in the boehmite sol effects on the textural and structural properties and surface morphology of alumina coatings on stainless steel samples are presented. It was found that the addition of polyethylene glycol combined with La3+ to the boehmite sol before spraying improves the thermal stability of porous alumina coatings. X-ray diffraction patterns of a doped sample, even after 5 h at 1000 degrees C, point out to the presence only of delta-Al2O3, with a S-BET of 74 m(2)/g. XPS data and SEM photographs of coated samples show that alumina were well deposited on the metallic supports. The absence of any lanthanum compounds indicates very well homogeneous dispersion of La3+-ions on the surface of alumina crystallites. AFM images show sphere like alumina grains and agglomerates with surface roughness from 60 to 180 nm, depending on temperature and doping. Surface roughness of doped alumina samples was higher than that of non-doped. It was pointed out that spray pyrolysis method enables preparation of alumina layers with relatively high specific surface area, suitable for applications as catalysts supports.

AB - Yb3+-doped Ba and Sr diphyllosilicates (hexacelsians) have been synthesized using the Na form of LTA zeolite by ion-exchange procedure and thermal treatment. The crystal structures of both doped samples are refined and described in this article. The results of Rietveld refinements clearly indicate that Yb3+ ions are incorporated into the hexacelsians structure. AFM photomicrographs show round-shaped particles with the size of few microns. The magnetization measurements were done within the 2-300 K temperature range, revealing an enhancement of magnetization with temperature that is not in accordance with simple paramagnetic behavior.

AB - In this paper the adsorption and oxidation of CO on nanocrystalline Au/γ-Fe2O3, Au/α-Fe2O3, γ-Fe2O3 and a series of mixed ferrite with Mn xZn1-xFe2O4 composition are investigated. The catalysts were prepared by co-precipitation method and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRPD), specific surface (BET), transition electron spectroscopy (TEM) and magnetization measurements. A temperature programmed desorption (TPD) study of the water and CO interaction with nanocrystalline adsorbents is presented. The catalytic activities towards CO oxidation increased in the following order: γ-Fe2O3 < MnxZn1-xFe2O4 < Au/γ-Fe2O3.

AB - Single phase perovskites, as LaCoO3, LaCrO3, La Co0 5 Cr0 5O3, La0.7Sr0 3CrO3 and La0 7Sr0 3Cr0 95Ru0 05O3, were synthesized and three-way activity and sulfur tolerance were measured in a pulse-flame catalyst testing system in a wide range of redox-potential (R). Comparison of activities indicates that perovskite with ruthenium ion has the best redox behaviour in the redox potential interval 0.75<R<1.40. On the basis of experimental data, the sulfur resistant matrix La0.7Sr0.3 CrO3 was synthetized and the highly active sulfur resistant ruthenium perovskite catalyst, was prepared.
