AB - Electrodeposited Pd and Sb-Pd catalysts were tested for the ethanol oxidation reaction by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. Palladium-antimony deposit was synthesized on a glassy carbon substrate by a two-step process, comprising deposition of Sb followed by deposition of Pd. The Sb-Pd electrocatalyst with the Sn:Pd atomic ratio 0.2:0.8 was obtained. Compared with pure Pd, the incorporation of Sb results in the increase of activity and stability of bimetallic catalyst for the electrocatalytic ethanol oxidation reaction. Besides upon the end of the current-time transient, the investigated Sb-Pd catalyst was subjected to the potential cycling showing the ability to recover activity loss implying the surface composition stability. The enhanced performance of Sb-Pd is mainly ascribed to the bifunctional mechanism and electronic effect.

AB - Pseudocapacive reaction of ruthenium oxide was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements combined with electrochemical quartz-crystal nanobalance. RuO2 was synthesized by one-pot microwave assisted hydrothermal method. CV measurements were conducted in H2SO4 and Na2SO4 solutions. The ruthenium oxide electrode as a working electrode was prepared by drop casting the water suspension of RuO2 on Au covered quartz electrode. Beside influence of different electrolyte, the effect of thermal treatment of RuO2 was also investigated since pseudocapacitive behaviour of RuO2 strongly depends on its hydrous form. The obtained results were compared to those of commercial RuO2. The results indicate that during the redox reaction of RuO2, various types of charge occur simultaneously. The mass loss or mass gain depends on the specific potential applied and the electrolyte employed.

AB - Polygonal Pt nanoparticles were synthesized using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) at different precursor concentrations. Physicochemical analysis of the synthesized Pt particles involved thermogravimetric, microscopic, electron diffractive, and light absorptive/refractive characteristics. Electrochemical properties and activity in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of the prepared material were compared to commercial Pt black. Registered electrochemical behavior is correlated to the structural properties of synthesized powders by impedance characteristics in ORR. The reported results confirmed that Pt nanoparticles of a characteristic and uniform size and shape, suitable for incorporation on the surfaces of interactive hosts as catalyst supports, were synthesized. It is found that USP-synthesized Pt involves larger particles than Pt black, with the size being slightly dependent on precursor concentration. Among ORR-active planes, the least active (111) structurally defined the synthesized particles. These two morphological and structural characteristics caused the USP-Pt to be made of lower Pt-intrinsic capacitive and redox currents, as well as of lower ORR activity. Although being of lower activity, USP-Pt is less sensitive to the rate of ORR current perturbations at higher overpotentials. This issue is assigned to less-compact catalyst layers and uniform particle size distribution, and consequently, of activity throughout the catalyst layer with respect to Pt black. These features are considered to positively affect catalyst stability and thus promote USP synthesis for improved properties of host-supported Pt catalysts.

AB - Determination of the extractive behavior of ionic species from lateritic ore leachates is complex, since the leachates are pregnant with tens of different ions in, as a rule, multiple oxide states. To examine the possible pathways of intrinsic electrochemical extraction of the crucial elements Ni and Co, it was necessary to make model solutions of these elements and to subject them to electrochemical examination techniques in order to obtain a benchmark. Beside Ni and Co, the model system for Fe had to be evaluated. Iron, as a dominant ore component by far, is the main interfering factor in the extraction processes of Ni and Co in rather low amounts from leaching solution. The leachate examination results were compared to separate model solutions, as well as to their combinations in concentrations and to pH values comparable to those of the leachate. The separation of the leachate components was initially performed by continuous increase in pH upon leaching with NaOH solution, and afterwards the pH-adjusted solutions were subjected to electrochemical investigation. With the purpose of connecting and quantifying the visual changes in leachate upon increase in pH, conductometric measurements were performed. Reactions of oxidation/precipitations were indicated, which led to the essential Fe removal by precipitation. Resulting solutions were found suitable for Ni and Co electrochemical extraction.

AB - The influence of different hydroxides, applied to activate carbon black, on the electrochemical properties of activated carbon was investigated. The carbon material was prepared by hydrothermal treatment of sucrose and afterwards thermally activated using KOH, NaOH and LiOH. The electrochemical properties of the obtained samples were examined by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and correlated to their physicochemical properties. All samples showed characteristic capacitor-like behaviour. The highest specific capacitance was obtained for the KOH-treated sample, while the increase in capacitance follows the sequence of the growth of ionic radius of a metal from an alkali which is used for activation. It was found that the dependence on the type of hydroxide is due to differences in the radii of a metal. The alkalies of larger radii of metal generated make pores wider and consequently the structure of a porous layer become more accessible to the charge transfer of capacitive response.

AB - Electrochemical measurements were employed to study the possibility of the extraction of metal ions from lateritic ore leachates predominantly rich in Fe in order to separate more noble cobalt and nickel metals. Lateritic ore was leached in 1 M H2SO4 solution at 70 °C by standard leaching process. The leachate was afterwards subjected to the pH adjustment that led to the removal of Fe ions by precipitation. Results obtained from cyclic voltammetry and chronamperometry measurements in native leachate and those with adjusted pH showed that optimal pH value for Fe removal was 3.7.

AB - Properties and characteristics of titanium(IV) oxide, as posible interactive and stable support for RuO2 and Pt electrocatalysts, are studied. RuO2 and Pt are important electrocatalytic materials, often used in industrial electrochemistry and alternative power sources. It was found that in Pt/TiO2 and RuO2/TiO2 composites synthesized in a way which enables highly ordered structures TiO2 acts like a stabilising and interactive core, while Pt and RuO2 are electrocatalyticaly active components encapsulating the core. As supporting component in both Pt/TiO2 and RuO2/TiO2 composites, TiO2 synthesis and its characterisation is performed separately.RuO2/TiO2 and Pt/TiO2 composites are synthesiezed using varouis hydrothermal approches consisting of temperature-controled conversion of aerosols and hydrosols to the solid phase. In the case of RuO2/TiO2 composite, influence of synthesis temperature on the morphology of the obtained composites was studied. Influence of the synthesis temperature on the stability of activated Ti anodes coated by obtained composites was examined as well.Dependance of the properties of the obtained composites on the applied synthesis approach was investigated. In-situ approach as one-step synthesis is applied along with the ex-situ approach, which implies that at least supporting component, TiO2, has been prepared prior to the composite synthesis. Strucutral and morphological properties of the obtained materials were tested using SEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, DLS, Raman and TGA techniques. Electrochemical characterization involved the analysis of non-Faradaic response and electrocatalytic activity and stability in chlorine and oxygen evolution reactions (RuO2/TiO2), as well as oxygen reduction and hydrogen evolution reactions (Pt/TiO2).It was found that all synthesized composites had spherical shape, independently of the synthesis method. Structure arrangement and uniformity depend on the applied approach, as well as on the synthesis temperature. Although conversion of ruthenium precursor to coresponding oxide was not complete at lower synthesis temperature, this temperature is beneficial for electrochemical characteristics of the RuO2/TiO2 composite. Namely, RuO2/TiO2 composite synthesiezed at lower temperature had better stability and capacitive characteristics.Influence of the microscopic distribution of the oxide components throughout the spherical agglomerates on the electrochemical characteristics of the RuO2/TiO2 composites synthesized at two different temperatures, with same nominal composition, was investigated. In addition, the disscusion takes into account the influence of the anatase TiO2 that cores are primary consisted of.Influence of the synthesis temperature and method on the morphological properties and electrocatalytic activity of the obtained Pt/TiO2 composites were examined. All of the prepared composites were of spherical shape, independently of the applied conditions. Regular spherical cores covered by a shell of nanometric platinum particles were obtained by ex-situ approach, whereas in-situ aproach resulted in mixture of huge hollow speheres and smaller all-solid spheres. The most promising electocatalytical properties were obtained by ex-situ USP method at moderate temperatures.

Najbolja elektrokatalitička svojstva pokazuje kompozit sintetizovan ex-situ pristupom na umerenoj temperaturi., Properties and characteristics of titanium(IV) oxide, as posible interactive and stable support for RuO2 and Pt electrocatalysts, are studied. The most promising electocatalytical properties were obtained by ex-situ USP method at moderate temperatures.",

AB - Owing to a wide range of application in kinetics (photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, etc.), it is of high importance to define in details corelation between structure and synthesis of TiO2 particles. The aim is to elucidate the kinetics of TiO2 solid phase formation by sol-gel approach as newly-structured suitable carrier of batteries/fuel cells electrocatalytic materials. TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized from TiCl3 precursor under different conditions (concentration, pH) in an aqueous medium. Formation of a new solid phase was continuously monitored by a dynamic conductometric measurements induced by high frequency impedance sinusoidal voltage perturbations of a conductometric cell. The particle size distributions of the obtained TiO2 sols were characterized by the dynamic light scattering method, while the microstructure data were obtained by the scanning electron microscopy. The typical change of high frequency impedance during TiO2 synthesis is presented in Figure 1. It was found that the process proceeds through at least five phases (I–V, Figure 1, seen as high frequency impedance decrease) of different rates and durability, which depend on synthesis conditions.

AB - Pt/TiO2 composites were synthesized by single-step ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) at different temperatures. In an in-situ method, Pt and TiO2 particles were generated from tetra-n-butyl orthotitanate and chloroplatinic acid, and hydrothermally-prepared TiO2 colloidal dispersion served as Pt support in an ex-situ USP approach. USP-synthesized Pt/TiO2 composites were generated in the form of a solid mixture, morphologically organized in nesting huge hollow and small solid spheres, or TiO2 core/Pt shell regular spheroids by in-situ or ex-situ method, respectively. This paper exclusively reports on characteristic mechanisms of the formation of novel two-component solid composites, which are intrinsic from the USP approach and controlled precursor composition. The generation of the two morphological components within the in-situ approach, the hollow spheres and all-solid spheres, was indicated to be caused by characteristic sol-gel/solid phase transition of TiO2 . Both the walls of the hollow spheres and the cores of all-solid ones consist of TiO2 matrix populated by 10 nm-sized Pt. On the other hand, spherical, uniformly-sized, Pt particles of a few nanometers in size created a shell uniformly deposited onto TiO2 spheres of ca. 150 nm size. Activities of the prepared samples in an oxygen reduction reaction and combined oxygen reduction and hydrogen evolution reactions were electrochemically tested. The ex-situ synthesized Pt/TiO2 was more active for oxygen reduction and combined oxygen reduction and hydrogen reactions in comparison to the in-situ Pt/TiO2 samples, due to better availability of Pt within a core/shell structure for the reactions.

AB - Activated titanium anodes, commercially known as dimensionally stable anodes (DSA®), are one of the most important discoveries in the field of applied electrochemistry of the 20th Century. These anodes are widely used for chlorine production in chlor-alkali industry, oxygen evolution reaction in electrowinnung processes and in electrochemical remediation of water and soil. DSAs consist of the mixed ruthenium−titanium oxide (RuO2–TiO2) coatings, oftenly doped with additional noble and/or transition metal oxides, deposited onto Ti surface. Structural, electocatlytic and capacitive properties of activated titanium anodes, prepared from oxides obtained by various synthesis methods, are investigated. These methods include sol–gel procedure, MW-assisted synthesis of the oxide from aqueous chloride solution and ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP). Microscopic investigations of the oxide sols and coatings showed that the aging time of the sols defines the coating morphology and, consequently, the electrochemical behavior of a coating. Better electrochemical characteristics, including anode stability in electrolysis, were registered for a combination of small RuO2 and large TiO2 sol–gel processed particles. Deactivation of an anode is manifested by an increased coating resistance and decreased electrochemically active surface area. The increase in the coating resistance is more pronounced for traditional coatings prepared by pyrolysis of metal chlorides, while sol–gel prepared coatings show more pronounced decrease in the electrochemically active surface area. The initial increase in coating resistance is caused by the dissolution of Ru species from the coating surface facing the electrolyte, which restricts the coating activity to the active sites from the interior of the coating (within the porous structure). It is shown that spray pyrolytic synthesis methods, e.g., ultrasonic spray pyrolysis, are versatile and applicable synthetic techniques for creating novel, rationally designed, RuO2–TiO2 material structures. Synthesized USP powders consisted of separated anatase and rutile phases, with anatase structure preserved even at 800 °C in the core of spherical particles onto which crystalline RuO2 preferentially grows.

AB - Spherical TiO2/RuO2 particles were synthesized by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) at 200 and 800◦C. The activity for the oxygen and chlorine evolution reactions (OER and CER, respectively) and the dynamic responses from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of the USP powders, as well as of the corresponding coatings on Ti, were analyzed and are discussed. The loss of coating activity is discussed with respect to the differences in the EIS and cyclic voltammetry responses of the coatings in their active and inactive states. The 800°C-USP sample was found to be more active than the 200°C-USP sample for both the CER and the OER, whereas the stability of the former was considerably lower. The correlation between the structure, composition and morphology of the powder and the coating with the registered electrochemical properties is discussed. The EIS analysis of the coating resistance distributions induced by the thermal treatment of the powder indicated a complex combination of the pore resistance and the pseudocapacitive charge transfer resistance. An additional coating resistance, due to loose grain boundaries, was introduced into the coatings in their active and inactive state. The EIS analysis indicated the changes in TiO2-enriched core/RuO2-enriched shell structure, caused by the USP temperature. © The Author(s) 2018. Published by ECS.

Published by ECS.",

AB - A simple one-step microwave-assisted and temperature-controlled hydrothermal synthesis was applied to prepare a nanocrystalline RuO2 dispersion from an aqueous solution of RuCl3 for supercapacitive applications. The obtained RuO2 dispersions were subjected to dynamic light scattering in order to analyze the particle size distribution, whereas morphology and structural properties of the solid phase were investigated by using AFM, SEM, EDX, TEM, and XRD techniques. Ellipsoidally shaped 100-500 nm-sized compact grains, joined into highly ordered prismatic agglomerates, are observed. Two types of grains are observed: more regular ones consisting of spherical, amorphous particles of a few nanometers in size, and irregular ones made of partially crystalline 10-80 nm-sized particles. Consequently, the most dominant structure is 250-nm grains. The particles tend to join tightly across their crystalline domains, which appears responsible for the formation of prismatic shapes of several micrometers. This arraying causes high capacitive activity - specific capacitances of up to 800 Fg(-1) are registered, which negligibly depend on the charging/discharging rate. The synthesized material is of highly accessible internal structure, and is an excellent candidate for both low- and high-power applications.

AB - TiO2 powder was synthesized by a forced hydrolysis process and used for the synthesis of Pt/TiO2 composite that is to be foreseen as an advanced electrode material. Pt was incorporated into the synthesized TiO2 from a Pt colloidal dispersion as a precursor prepared by a microwave- assisted polyol process. Physicochemical properties of TiO2 and TiO2- supported Pt were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering and X- ray spectroscopy and diffraction techniques. The properties of Pt/TiO2 composite are correlated to the basic voltammetric response of its thin-layer form. It was found that subsequent thermal treatment of synthesized TiO2, which caused crystallization into mainly rutile phase, is required for appropriate Pt incorporation. Although being appropriately loaded by Pt, and the voltammetric response is typical for Pt-based material, the voltammetry of Pt/TiO2 corresponded to much lower loadings. The possibility for Pt particles to be trapped inside TiO2 agglomerates is indicated. The catalyst usage from the synthesized Pt/TiO2 was found quite moderate due to this trapping.

AB - Synthesis and subsequent deposition of sub-micron spherical RuO2/TiO2 particles onto titanium were performed by continuous process in two connected reactors, exclusively applied for this purpose. Synthesis of particles was achieved by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method in the first reactor. The deposition of thus produced RuO2/TiO2 onto an expanded titanium substrate was performed at 500 degrees C afterwards in the second, specially constructed, reactor equipped by high-voltage electrostatic field. Basic electrochemical properties of the obtained RuO2/TiO2 particles were checked in a form of the coating on Ti deposited from the suspension of the material produced in the first reactor. Thus prepared anode was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), polarization measurements in O-2 (OER) and Cl-2 (CER) evolution and the accelerated stability test in diluted chloride solution. The morphology and composition of the deposited RuO2/TiO2 were checked by scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis. Analysis of the results obtained for OER and CER showed that Tafel slopes for these reactions were in accordance with the values for this kind of material. The CV response was of usual characteristics too. The accelerated stability test revealed acceptable anode stability.

AB - Composites of graphene and SnO2 were successfully prepared by a single step simultaneous synthesis of SnO2 and reduction of graphene oxide (GO). Three different compositions of precursor solution resulted in different composite materials containing graphene and SnO2. The reaction was realized by microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) gave insight into the morphology and composition of the obtained materials. Good capacitive/pseudocapacitive properties of the obtained material suitable for supercapacitor application were registered by cyclic voltammetry, from where specific capacitance values up to 93 F g(-1) were determined.

The corrosion behavior is monitored during the exposure to 3 wt. % NaCl aqueous solution. Experimental data are fitted to various equivalent electrical circuits with special attention to inductive features. Equivalent electrical circuits involving inductivity represent impedance response equally well as the ones without inductivity, although the parameter values gained from the former correspond better to the proposed model of physicochemical changes during corrosion of investigated samples.

AB - Ruthenium oxide coating on titanium was prepared by the sol-gel procedure from well-defined colloidal oxide dispersions synthesized by the microwave (MW)-assisted hydrothermal route under defined temperature and pressure heating conditions. The dispersions were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The electrochemical properties were analyzed as capacitive performances gained by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and as the electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution from acid solution. The obtained dispersions were polydisperse and contained regular particles and agglomerates of increasing surface energy and decreasing particle size as the MW-assisted heating conditions were intensified. Owing to these features of the precursor dispersions, the obtained coatings had considerably improved capacitive performances and good electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution at high overpotentials.

AB - Cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements were conducted and analyzed for a preliminary estimation of the stability of composite electrocatalysts based on Pt. The changes in CV currents of platinum nanoparticles supported on TiO2 were compared to the changes of those supported on commercial carbon. TiO2 was synthesized by sol-gel method and Pt was deposited from Pt colloidal dispersion synthesized by microwave-assisted polyol process. It was found that Pt component in both Pt/TiO2 and Pt/C behaves similarly with respect to stability and activity during the cycling. The loss in activity with cycling was linear and strongly depended on sweep rate, i.e., the relative loss is higher at lower sweep rates. The steady state activities for both electrocatalysts were reached at the level of 65 % of initial activity and required more than 100 voltammetric cycles.

AB - The applicability of Peleg model was investigated for predicting mass transfer kinetics during the osmotic dehydration (OD) process of pears, at different concentrations (40, 60 and 70%, w/w) and temperatures (20, 35 and 50 degrees C) of sucrose solution. Increase in sucrose solution concentration resulted in higher water loss (WL) and solid gain (SG) values through the osmotic treatment period. After 360 min of osmotic treatment of pears, WL ranged from 23.71 to 31.68% at 20 degrees C, from 24.80 to 40.38% at 35 degrees C and from 33.30 to 52.07% at 50 degrees C of initial weight of pears. The increase of dry mass of the samples, SG, after 360 min of osmotic treatment ranged from 3.02 to 6.68% at 20 degrees C, from 4.15 to 7.71% at 35 degrees C and from 5.00 to 8.92% at 50 degrees C. Peleg's rate constants, k(1)(WL) and k(1)(SG), decreased with increasing temperature, as well as decreased with increasing concentration of osmotic solution at constant temperature. Both capacity constants k(2)(WL) and k(2)(SG) also exhibited the inverse relationship between capacity constant and temperature, as well as concentration of the osmotic solution. Peleg's rate constants for WL and SG at all temperatures followed an Arrhenius type relationship. The predicted equilibrium values were very close to experimental ones, which was confirmed with high coefficients of determination and by the residual analysis.

AB - One-step simple temperature-controlled microwave synthesis was applied to prepare nanocrystalline RuO2 dispersion from aqueous RuCl3. RuO2 dispersion was subjected to dynamic light scattering in order to analyze the synthesized particles, whereas structural and morphological properties of the solid phase are investigated by AFM, SEM, EDAX and XRD techniques. The ordered unusual shape of ca. 100-nm native particles, as well as highlyordered prismatic agglomerate sheets are observed. Capacitive properties of RuO2 was investigated by cyclic
voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 1 M H2SO4 and standard three-electrode cell, with ink-type working electrode on glassy carbon substrate A specific capacitances as high as 750 F/g were obtained, which negligibly depend on sweep rate in 5–500 mV/s range. These findings are quite unusual for this kind of material consisted of rather large particles, and makes it excellent candidate for both low and high power applications. The capacitive response appears stable during prolonged charge/discharge cycling.

AB - TiO2 was synthesized by forced hydrolysis process in order to be used as the support for Pt electrocatalyst (Pt/TiO2). Pt was deposited from Pt colloid solution synthesized by microwave-assisted polyol process. TiO2 powder (or C) was dispersed into H2O and 2 M H2SO4. The obtained suspension was stirred and Pt colloid was added afterwards. Upon filtration and rinsing with water, the obtained Pt/TiO2 (or Pt/C) catalyst was thermally treated at 160 C in N2 atmosphere. The catalyst water suspension for the preparation of 0.31 mg/cm2 thin layer electrode was loaded onto glassy carbon disk. Physical and chemical properties of the TiO2 and supported Pt catalyst were characterized by EDS, SEM, dynamic light scattering and XRD techniques. The influence of TiO2 thermal treatment on the electrochemical properties of Pt/TiO2 was also checked. Nominal Pt loading was 20 wt. %. EDS method revealed 18 wt. % loading of Pt on TiO2. The electrochemical properties of the Pt/TiO2 were examined by cyclic voltammetry in 0.1 M HClO4. The obtained results were compared with those obtained for carbon-supported Pt under the same conditions (Figure 1). The charge corresponding to the hydrogen desorption on Pt/TiO2 is lower than expected for 20 wt. % Pt. Although the voltammetric response is typical for Pt-based electrode material, the charge corresponds only to ~3 wt. % Pt. SEM images showed that TiO2 particles tend to form 3μm-sized agglomerates of ellipsoidal shape. The results indicate the possibility for platinum particles to be trapped inside TiO2 agglomerates. Even though calcination of TiO2 improved the Pt uptake from colloidal dispersion, it is still not as effective as commercial carbon support.
