AB - Polygonal Pt nanoparticles were synthesized using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) at different precursor concentrations. Physicochemical analysis of the synthesized Pt particles involved thermogravimetric, microscopic, electron diffractive, and light absorptive/refractive characteristics. Electrochemical properties and activity in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of the prepared material were compared to commercial Pt black. Registered electrochemical behavior is correlated to the structural properties of synthesized powders by impedance characteristics in ORR. The reported results confirmed that Pt nanoparticles of a characteristic and uniform size and shape, suitable for incorporation on the surfaces of interactive hosts as catalyst supports, were synthesized. It is found that USP-synthesized Pt involves larger particles than Pt black, with the size being slightly dependent on precursor concentration. Among ORR-active planes, the least active (111) structurally defined the synthesized particles. These two morphological and structural characteristics caused the USP-Pt to be made of lower Pt-intrinsic capacitive and redox currents, as well as of lower ORR activity. Although being of lower activity, USP-Pt is less sensitive to the rate of ORR current perturbations at higher overpotentials. This issue is assigned to less-compact catalyst layers and uniform particle size distribution, and consequently, of activity throughout the catalyst layer with respect to Pt black. These features are considered to positively affect catalyst stability and thus promote USP synthesis for improved properties of host-supported Pt catalysts.

AB - Determination of the extractive behavior of ionic species from lateritic ore leachates is complex, since the leachates are pregnant with tens of different ions in, as a rule, multiple oxide states. To examine the possible pathways of intrinsic electrochemical extraction of the crucial elements Ni and Co, it was necessary to make model solutions of these elements and to subject them to electrochemical examination techniques in order to obtain a benchmark. Beside Ni and Co, the model system for Fe had to be evaluated. Iron, as a dominant ore component by far, is the main interfering factor in the extraction processes of Ni and Co in rather low amounts from leaching solution. The leachate examination results were compared to separate model solutions, as well as to their combinations in concentrations and to pH values comparable to those of the leachate. The separation of the leachate components was initially performed by continuous increase in pH upon leaching with NaOH solution, and afterwards the pH-adjusted solutions were subjected to electrochemical investigation. With the purpose of connecting and quantifying the visual changes in leachate upon increase in pH, conductometric measurements were performed. Reactions of oxidation/precipitations were indicated, which led to the essential Fe removal by precipitation. Resulting solutions were found suitable for Ni and Co electrochemical extraction.

AB - Recently there is an effort to reach highly reversible and stable materials for energy storage
processes. Novel materials used in electrochemistry-based energy storage as a suitable
supports for noble ones, has been predominant in the past few years. Supercapacitors, as a
bridge between batteries and traditional capacitors, have attracted significant attention as new
promising energy storage devices. Hybrid nanomaterials based on manganese, cobalt, and
lanthanum oxides of different morphology and phase compositions were prepared using a
facile single-step ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) process. Transition metal oxides are
considered as an ideal electrode materials for electrochemical redox transitions-based
pseudocapacitors, because they can provide a variety of oxidation states for rather fast and
efficient redox transitions. Strontium-doped lanthanum cobaltites (La1-xSrxCoO3- , LSCO)
have shown promising catalytic performance for ORR in alkaline media. The aim of this
investigation was to bring detailed insights of supercapacitive potentials of pure LSCO and
LSCO hydrothermally doped by RuO2. Also, to separate influences of constituting oxides to
this issue, in order to reveal the redox electrochemistry behind perovskite structures as
supports for supercapacitive applications.

AB - Calcium phosphates (CP), amongst which amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) and hydroxyapatite (HAp), along with Ti and TiO2 layers, have found vast applications in preventive and regenerative medicine due to their excellent biocompatibility, nontoxic properties and ability to participate in the normal metabolism of organisms. In this paper cytotoxicity of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) and chitosan lactate (ChOL) multifunctional and hybrid composite coatings on MRC-5 human lung fibroblast cell line is presented. ACP/TiO2 and ACP/TiO2/ChOL are deposited by coatings new in situ anodization/anaphoretic deposition process at constant voltage of 60 V for 180 s at 25 °C. Cytotoxicity tests showed that there was no significant decrease in the survival of healthy MRC-5 cells in the Ti and ACP/TiO2 composite samples, while there was an increase in the number of viable cells in the ACP/TiO2/ChOL sample. There is improved cell proliferation, differentiation and cell viability in the later. Sample containing ACP/TiO2/ChOL coating showed negative cytotoxicity in both DET and MTT tests. Greater recovery of MRC-5 human lung fibroblasts cells was observed compared to the control sample after 48 h of recovery. From these results, it can be concluded that not only the ACP/TiO2/ChOL multifunctional composite coating is non-cytotoxic, but the presence of ChOL in the coating improves cell proliferation, differentiation and cell viability. Based on the obtained results, it can be concluded that both composite materials used in the studies are non-cytotoxic to the cell lines used, and that 5 wt.% of ChOL has a positive effect on the non-toxicity of the material. Based on presented results in this paper and previous published results of the physicochemical and bioactive properties of the ACP/TiO2/ChOL composite material, it can be concluded that further development as well as potential preclinical studies would be largely justified.

AB - The role and influence of strontium and its oxide on structure and capacitive response of materials containing mixed lanthanum cobalt oxides, LC, and lanthanum strontium cobalt oxides, LSC, as a capacitive materials were investigated in this study. The mixed oxides were synthesized by the single-step ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) technique. The microstructures and electrochemical properties of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, potentiostatic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and galvanostatic charge/discharge cycling. It was found that strontium oxide induces the formation of the perovskite structure of promoted pseudocapacitive behavior over an enhancement of redox transitions of cobalt. The measurements showed that the capacitive stability and rate capability were lower for the samples of higher specific capacitance. Among the prepared materials, the LSC prepared at a USP temperature 600 °C showed the best capacitive characteristics in 0.10 M KOH due to having the most defined spherical perovskite structure leading to well-defined reversible charge–discharge performances.

AB - The aim of this work was to investigate corrosion resistivity, bioactivity, and antibacterial activity of novel nano-amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) potentially multifunctional composite coatings with and without chitosan oligosaccharide lactate (ChOL), ACP + ChOL/TiO2 and ACP/TiO2 ACP + ChOL/TiO2, respectively, on the titanium substrate. The coatings were obtained by new single-step in situ anodization of the substrate to generate TiO2 and the anaphoretic electrodeposition process of ACP and ChOL. The obtained coatings were around 300 ± 15 μm thick and consisted of two phases, namely, TiO2 and hybrid composite phases. Both ACP/TiO2 and ACP + ChOL/TiO2 have improved corrosion stability, whereas the ACP + ChOL/TiO2 coating showed better corrosion stability. It was shown that at the very start of the deposition process, the formation of the ChOL/TiO2 layer takes place predominantly, which is followed by the inclusion of ChOL into ACP with simultaneous growth of TiO2. This deposition mechanism resulted in the formation of strongly bonded uniform stable coating with high corrosion resistance. In vitro bioactivity was investigated by immersion of the samples in simulated body fluid (SBF). There is in-bone-like apatite formation on both ACP/TiO2 and ACP + ChOL/TiO2 surfaces upon immersion into SBF, which was proven by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. While ACP/TiO2 shows no antibacterial activity, ACP + ChOL/TiO2 samples exhibited three- to fourfold decreases in the number of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, respectively, after 420 min. The probable mechanism is binding ChOL with the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting its growth, altering the permeability of the cell membrane, and leading to bacterial death.

AB - The cytotoxicity of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) and chitosan lactate (ChOL) multifunctional and hybrid composite coatings on MRC-5 human lung fibroblast cell line was elucidated. ACP/TiO2 and ACP/TiO2/ /ChOL were deposited onto Ti by a novel in situ anodization/anaphoretic process at constant voltage. Cytotoxicity tests showed that there was no significant decrease in the survival of healthy MRC-5 cells exposed to composite samples without chitosan lactate, while there was an increase in the number of viable cells in the sample containing ChOL. These findings show that there was improved cell proliferation, differentiation and cell viability in the ChOL-containing sample, which makes ACP/TiO2/ChOL coating a good candidate for applications in medicine and stomatology.

Lateritic ore was leached in 1 M H2SO4 solution at 70 oC by standard leaching process. The leachate was afterwards subjected to the pH adjustment that led to the removal of metal ions by precipitation. Measurements of pH as well as chemical analysis show characteristic values of metal ion removal from the PLS.

AB - Electrochemical measurements were employed to study the possibility of the extraction of metal ions from lateritic ore leachates predominantly rich in Fe in order to separate more noble cobalt and nickel metals. Lateritic ore was leached in 1 M H2SO4 solution at 70 °C by standard leaching process. The leachate was afterwards subjected to the pH adjustment that led to the removal of Fe ions by precipitation. Results obtained from cyclic voltammetry and chronamperometry measurements in native leachate and those with adjusted pH showed that optimal pH value for Fe removal was 3.7.

AB - The electrorefining process of the non-commercial Cu anodes was tested on the enlarged laboratory equipment over 72 h. Cu anodes with Ni content of 5 or 10 wt.% and total content of Pb, Sn, and Sb of about 1.5 wt.% were used for the tests. The real waste solution of sulfuric acid character was a working electrolyte of different temperatures (T1 = 63 ± 2 °C and T2 = 73 ± 2 °C). The current density of 250 A/m2 was the same as in the commercial process. Tests were confirmed that those anodes can be used in the commercial copper electrorefining process based on the fact that the elements from anodes were dissolved, the total anode passivation did not occur, and copper is deposited onto cathodes. The masses of cathode deposits confirmed that the Cu ions from the electrolyte were also deposited onto cathodes. The concentration of Cu, As, and Sb ions in the electrolyte was decreased. At the same time, the concentration of Ni ions was increased by a maximum of up to 129.27 wt.%. The major crystalline phases in the obtained anode slime, detected by the X-ray diffraction analyses, were PbSO4, Cu3As, SbAsO4, Cu2O, As2O3, PbO, SnO, and Sb2O3.

AB - In chemical processes it is of essential for flow in the process to be accurate and well defined.
Fluid velocity measurements are important for fluid flow quality performance in the systems.
This study focuses on determination of volumetric flow rate measurement and on calibration
of conventional flowmeter using industrial radiotracer approach. In this work, the application
of radiotracer method for RTD measurement in flow meter calibration for chemical industry
is described. The experiments in pilot-scale flow rig were performed using Technetium-99 m
(
99mTc) as a radiotracer in the form of pertechnetate ion (99mTcO4
-
) to calibrate flow meter. The
data were evaluated using plug flow with axial dispersion model of RTD software.
The optimization of the parameters included input signal of radiotracer, concentration of
radiotracer and position of detectors. The measured data were analyzed, and precision of
experimental setup was investigated under two different approaches. A plug flow with axial
dispersion was used to simulate the measured RTD curves and investigate flow dynamics of
the flowing water. The results of the study, showed that there might be an optimum injection
volume range of the tracer for each specific application.
The optimum range in this study was determined from 300 to 700 µL. In this range, relative
standard deviation was around 1% for both calculation methods, which is lower than with
other available injection volumes. Bias of the initial flow rate was lower using summation
approximation, resulting in ca 9% in the area of interest. In case of RTD software, bias values
were between 10 and 11%. For the first time the variation of standard deviation of calculated
flow rate with injection volume and activity of radiotracer was determined. The results of the
study may help in injection volume optimization as well as give a guide on how to process
data without RTD software, as the results obtained by both methods were in great agreement.
They also revealed a slight dependency of the precision of output results on the injection
volume as well as similar results for manual and specialized RTD software data processing. The
study that investigated the change of standard deviation of calculated flow rate with injection
volume and activity of used radiotracer was conducted for the first time in literature.

AB - In this paper novel in situ one-step simultaneous anaphoretic deposition process of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) and titanium oxide (TiOx) with and without chitosan oligosaccharide lactate (ChOL) on titanium substrate was performed. The coatings were investigated by SEM, XRD and FTIR techniques, whereas roughness and adhesion were measured. It was shown that novel process occurs, with improved coatings adhesion and excellent coverage of the surface. At 90 V the surface is smoother, and there is possibility for crystallization of the components at prolonged deposition times.

AB - In chemical processes it is essential that the flow in the process is accurately defined. Fluid velocity measurements are important for fluid flow quality performance in flow systems. This study focuses on determination of the volumetric flow rate and its standard (relative) deviation for calibration of conventional flow meters by using a radiotracer approach. The measurements for flow meter calibration were performed at a pilot-scale flow rig using Technetium-99 m (99mTc) as a radiotracer in the form of pertechnetate ion (99mTcO4-). The measured data were analyzed, and precision of the experimental setup was investigated under two different approaches – IAEA’s RTD software and sum approximation of raw data. For the first time, the variation of standard deviation of calculated flow rate with the injection volume and activity of the radiotracer was determined. Plug flow with axial dispersion was used to simulate the measured RTD curves and investigate the flow dynamics of the flowing water. The results of the study have shown the possibility of in situ calibration of flow meters with a relative error lower than 1 %. They also revealed a slight dependency of the precision of output results on the injection volume as well as similar results for manual and specialized RTD software data processing.

AB - Pt/TiO2 composites were synthesized by single-step ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) at different temperatures. In an in-situ method, Pt and TiO2 particles were generated from tetra-n-butyl orthotitanate and chloroplatinic acid, and hydrothermally-prepared TiO2 colloidal dispersion served as Pt support in an ex-situ USP approach. USP-synthesized Pt/TiO2 composites were generated in the form of a solid mixture, morphologically organized in nesting huge hollow and small solid spheres, or TiO2 core/Pt shell regular spheroids by in-situ or ex-situ method, respectively. This paper exclusively reports on characteristic mechanisms of the formation of novel two-component solid composites, which are intrinsic from the USP approach and controlled precursor composition. The generation of the two morphological components within the in-situ approach, the hollow spheres and all-solid spheres, was indicated to be caused by characteristic sol-gel/solid phase transition of TiO2 . Both the walls of the hollow spheres and the cores of all-solid ones consist of TiO2 matrix populated by 10 nm-sized Pt. On the other hand, spherical, uniformly-sized, Pt particles of a few nanometers in size created a shell uniformly deposited onto TiO2 spheres of ca. 150 nm size. Activities of the prepared samples in an oxygen reduction reaction and combined oxygen reduction and hydrogen evolution reactions were electrochemically tested. The ex-situ synthesized Pt/TiO2 was more active for oxygen reduction and combined oxygen reduction and hydrogen reactions in comparison to the in-situ Pt/TiO2 samples, due to better availability of Pt within a core/shell structure for the reactions.

AB - The electrodeposition of aluminium on glassy carbon and aluminium substrates from AlCl3–urea deep eutectic solvent (DES) system at near room temperatures was investigated, without additional purification of the chemicals used to prepare the electrolyte and without rigorous control of moisture and oxygen present in the working space. The effects of changing temperature, working potential, controlled deposition current density and deposition time on the morphology of deposited aluminium without stirring of the electrolyte were recorded. Using potentiostatic and galvanostatic techniques, aluminium was electrodeposited from the deep eutectic solvent (n(AlCl3):n(urea)=1.6:1) onto glassy carbon and aluminium substrates at temperatures ranging from 25 to 50 °C. Using SEM, EDS and XRD techniques, substrates were studied and confirmed the presence of aluminium deposits following both potentiostatic and galvanostatic regimes. The shape and size of Al grains deposited depended on the time of deposition and varied in size from nanometers to micrometers and in shape from regular crystal forms to needle-like and flake-like structures.

abstract = "The electrodeposition of aluminium on glassy carbon and aluminium substrates from AlCl3–urea deep eutectic solvent (DES) system at near room temperatures was investigated, without additional purification of the chemicals used to prepare the electrolyte and without rigorous control of moisture and oxygen present in the working space. The shape and size of Al grains deposited depended on the time of deposition and varied in size from nanometers to micrometers and in shape from regular crystal forms to needle-like and flake-like structures.",

AB - Electrochemical reduction processes of Nd(III) on tungsten and molybdenum electrodes in NdF3+LiF and NdF3+LiF+Nd2O3 were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry and open circuit measurements. Electrolytes and electrodes were examined after neodymium electrodeposition by optical microscopy and XRD. It was found that tungsten and molybdenum working electrodes behave identically during neodymium complexed ion reduction processes. Their reversible potentials in the electrolytes used differed only by 10 mV, and so did the potentials of the neodymium ion reduction processes. The recorded results indicated that the Nd(III) ions in the melts were reduced in two steps: Nd(III) → Nd(II) and Nd(II) → Nd(0). These consecutive processes are predominantly mass transfer controlled. Electrolytically obtained metal appeared to accumulate on the cathode and no metal neodymium was recorded in the solidified electrolyte placed close to the cathode after completed electrodeposition process. However, it was found that NdF2 formed by the disproportionation reaction between Nd(III) and that deposited Nd(0) coexists with other complex components in the electrolytes used.

AB - The corrosion inhibiting possibility examination of extracts obtained from fruits of rose hip and
horse chestnut was investigated. Rose hip extracted at different temperatures exhibited different
corrosion inhibiting effect. Rose hip obtained at 40oC did not show any inhibiting effect in neutral
pH medium, while in acidic media it expressed moderate protective impact (up to 55%) for steel
and mild corrosion inhibiting impact for zinc (39%), while for aluminium and copper it did not
have any inhibiting effect. Rose hip obtained at 25oC exhibited significant inhibiting effect for steel
(up to 62 %) and even better for zinc (up to 72%) in neutral media. For aluminium and copper
neither of Rose hip extracts showed any inhibiting effect. The Horse chestnut extract exhibits
moderate to significant inhibiting effect for steel (up to 55%) and zinc (up to 60%) in neutral
media. In addition to this, because of the complex chemical composition of these fruit extracts,
some further electrochemical investigation is suggested, aimed to determine a single component
inhibitive effect. Firstly, as one of prevailing components, tannins are examined. Linear
polarization resistance (LPR) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used as a
testing techniques.

Currently, Pt based electrodes have the best catalytic performance but due to is high cost its employment on a significant scale is limmited. Perovskite materials would be a good alternative because of is abundant supply, envronmental benignity, electronic structure, ionic conductivity and redox behavior. Therefore, the aim of this work is synthesis and characterzation of Lanthanum cobalt oxide (LaCoO3) powders doped with Manganese (Mn) - LMCO or Strontium (Sr) - LSCO, as promissing candidates for energy storage and conversion devices. Ultrasonic spray pyrolisis (USP) was used to successfully synthsize spherical sub-microm-m-szed of Lai0.6Sr0.4CoO3 and La0.6Mn0.4CoO3 perovskite type materials. Detailed microscopic analysis (SEM-EDX, TEM, XRD) as well as electrochemical characterization by CV, LSV and EIS technique has been conducted.

AB - Development of low temperature processes for electrochemical deposition
of aluminium is highly desirable in order to overcome high energy cost, toxic emission of
fluoride and chloride from high temperature molten salt electrolytes. AlCh+urea ionic
mixture known as deep eutectic solvent (DES) is recognized as an economical electrolyte for
alunuruum electrodeposition at room temperatures [I, 2]. Electrodeposition experiments were
conducted on aluminum electrode using constant deposition current density (2 mA cm"2

different bath temperatures: 25 °C, 35°C and 50°C. Using SEM and EDS techniques the
deposits were studied for their morphology dependence on the experimental conditions.
particularly working temperature. Electrochemical techniques used were linear sweep
voltarnmetry and chronopotentiometry. The size of individual Al grains deposited under the
same constant current density became larger (from nanometers to micrometers) with
increasing bath temperature. The shape of deposits ranged from regular crystal grains to complicated morphology including needle-like and flake-like structures.

AB - In this study we report of considerable promotion of supercapacitive performances of ruthenium oxide hosted by perovskite-like structure of rare earth–CoO3 composite and vice versa. Spherical, sub-µm-sized, regular spheres of La0.6Sr0.4CoO3 (LSCO) were synthesized by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP). The sphere surface was subsequently hydrothermally doped by RuO2. LSCO and LSCO/RuO2 composites were investigated for their supercapacitive performances in alkaline solution. Microstructure and surface morphology were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was found that amorphous Ru species decorate the surface of LSCO spheres, and possibly incorporate partially into a B-site of the LSCO lattice. Electrochemical characterization by cyclic voltammetry (CV) clearly revealed that capacitive performances of LSCO are considerably improved by 20 mass% addition of RuO2. The registered capacitance for LSCO/RuO2 reaches the values of USP-synthesized pure RuO2, which reveals the promoting influence of LSCO on RuO2 pseudocapacitance. This intrinsic interactive promotion introduces the LSCO/RuO2 composite as a unique supercapacitive material.

AB - The results of experimental studies of the properties of composite materials based on Poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) matrix filled with electrolytic copper powder, having very high dendritic structure, are presented in this manuscript. Copper powder volume fractions used as filler in all prepared composites were varied in the range of 0.4-7.2 vol. %. The samples were prepared by hot moulding injection at 140°C. Influence of morphology on the conductivity and percolation threshold of the composites was examined and characterization included: Electrical conductivity measurements using Impedance Spectroscopy (IS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Presence of three dimensional conductive pathways was confirmed. The obtained percolation threshold was 2.72 vol.%, which is about three times lower than the one stated in the literature for similar composites. This property is ascribed to different morphology of filler used in investigation.
