AB - The study of the electrochemical reduction on acetonitrile modified platinum electrode and determination of trinitrotoluene (TNT) in neutral solution by simple galvanostatic technique is presented here. The obtained potential-time responses on the applied constant cathodic current pulses showed two potential transitions before achieving the steady-states, referring to the multi-step reduction process of nitro groups in TNT molecule. The calibration curves of the dependence of the square root of the first transition time (tau(0.5)) on the TNT concentration were linear in the ranges 4.4 - 303.8 mu M and 0.09 - 4.40 mu M for applied constant current of 0.1 mA. The detection limit was 0.09 mu M. The method was tested in the river water. The results indicated the sensitivity of the galvanostatic method for TNT determination in the environmental samples. From the first transition on the E-t curves the characteristics important for the understanding the mechanism of the reduction process were obtained. It was found that four electrons are involved in the reduction process of the first nitro group, indicating that the reduction product in a neutral electrolyte is hydroxylamine.

AB - The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was studied on the polycrystalline Pt electrode in 0.1 M NaCl electrolyte containing various amounts of acetonitrile (AcN). The state of the electrode surface was characterized by the cyclic voltammetry in oxygen free electrolytes, while ORR studies were performed on the polycrystalline Pt rotating disc electrode by the linear sweep voltammetry in oxygen saturated electrolytes. The acetonitrile is chemisorbed on Pt over a wide potential range, inhibiting both hydrogen adsorption and oxide formation. The extent of AcN chemisorption depends on its concentration in the solution. Initial potential of oxygen reduction is shifted negatively, while the ORR current is increasingly reduced with the increase of AcN concentration. Complete inhibition of ORR in the potential range of AcN and Cl-anion coadsorption is achieved for (0.1 M NaCl + 1 M AcN) solution.

AB - Possibility of electrochemical determination of a nitroaromatic compounds was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic pulse technique on a platinum electrode in aqueous sodium chloride solutions (0.5M NaCl) with acetonitrile containing different concentrations of trinitrotoluene (TNT), as an example of nitroaromatic compound. Acetonitrile chemisorption on a platinum surface took place and when the supported electrolyte contained acetonitrile in concentration as low as 0.5vol% extend of it chemisorption achieved saturation and platinum surface became effectively modified. The obtained cyclic voltammograms showed three distinct reduction peaks in the potential range of -0.45 to -0.8 V (vs. an Ag/AgCl (3M KCl) reference electrode), which refer to the multi-step process of TNT reduction. The calibration curves of the dependence of the first peak current on the TNT concentration were linear in the ranges 4.4 - 638.4 μM and 0.11 - 4.40 μM for two different scan rates, 200 mV s-1 and 20 mV s-1, respectively. The detection limit was 0.11 μM. The accuracy of the method presented in this work was tested in river water and it was confirmed that TNT could be successfully detected by acetonitrile modified Pt electrode.

The obtained cyclic voltammograms showed three distinct reduction peaks in the potential range of -0.45 to -0.8 V (vs. an Ag/AgCl (3M KCl) reference electrode), which refer to the multi-step process of TNT reduction. The detection limit was 0.11 mu M. Acetonitrile chemisorption on Pt surface took place and caused thus modified platinum electrode to exhibit an electrochemically stabile behaviour. Hence, a very high reproducibility over a prolonged time and voltammetric cycling was provided for using a Pt wire that is easy to handle as a suitable material for TNT sensing. Additionally, it was confirmed by testing the acetonitrile modified Pt wire for TNT detection in river water.

AB - The reduction of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT),as an example of nitroaromatic compounds with three nitro groups, was investigated by cyclic voltammetry on a platinum electrode in aqueous sodium chloride solutions with acetonitrile. The obtained cyclic voltammograms showed three well-pronounced reduction peaks in the potential range of –0.43 to –0.8 V (vs. Ag/AgCl reference electrode). The potentials of the peaks were dependant on the potential scan rate as well as on the TNT concentration, indicating the irreversibility of the reduction process. A calibration curve as a linear dependence of the first peak current on the TNT concentration was obtained in the range 4.4 – 638.4 μM L–1.The platinum electrode exhibited an electrochemically stabile behavior for the TNT reduction process. Hence, a Pt electrode could be a suitable material for TNT sensing.

AB - The catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of Ni/WC composites obtained by electrochemical
deposition of nickel from a conventional Watt’s bath, using two different ways of depositing the WC particles, was
investigated. All the composite coatings exhibited electrocatalytic activity for the HER larger than that of pure Ni in
both alkaline and acid solution. The activity increased with increasing content of WC in the coating and, in the
pulsed current regime, with increasing frequency of pulsation. In addition, coatings with smaller particles incorporated
exhibited higher activity than those with larger particles. At a constant potential, an order of magnitude
higher current densities were obtained in some cases.

AB - Ni/WC and Cu/WC composite coatings were obtained in two steps. The first step consists of the inert WC particles deposition from the aqueous solution onto steel surface by means of a micro-pipette and covering by the dilute aqueous Nafion solution. The second step is the electrochemical metal deposition from commercial baths in constant current regimes. As result, compact composite coatings were obtained with the different amounts of WC in the deposit in the entire range between a part of a percent up to a few tenths of the percent. The new two-steps method for the formation of the composite coatings renders a very homogeneous distribution of inert WC particles in the deposit and exactly defined chemical composition in each part of the coating Several advantages of splitting the process into two steps are found: the electrolyte for the metal deposition stays clean, no stirring is necessary and it is possible to deposit homogeneously large particles at desired parts of the surface. It is also possible to form multi-layer composite deposits as well as composite foils.
