AB - Aniline, the main representative of aromatic amines, occurs in a large number
of industries, such as the production of textiles, plastics, medicines, pesticides,
rubber, and varnishes.1 Due to practicality and efficiency, a molecularly imprinted
polymers (MIPs) can be used as sorbents for removing aniline.2 In this study,
magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer was synthesized via suspension
copolymerization while characterization was performed by various methods in order
to obtain an efficient sorbent for the aniline removal from an aqueous solution.
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) confirmed characteristic vibrational
bands which suggested successful synthesis of MIP, nitrogen gas adsorption-desorption
measurements as well as mercury porosimetry have shown that the most
dominant pores were mesopores, while scanning electron microscopy with energy
dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) confirmed a 3D spherical porous
structure with all the expected elements.

AB - Macroporous (glycidyl methacrylate) GMA-based composite was
synthesized via suspension polymerization in the presence of 2 wt. % magnetic
nanoparticles and functionalized with triethylenetetramine. Copper was immobilized
on composite by contacting modified copolymer with 0.1 M solution of CuCl2, at pH
5, and 25 ̊C. The obtained composite was characterized by mercury porosimetry,
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis and atomic force
microscopy (AFM). GMA-based composites, due to their properties (size, porosity,
etc.), and the presence of reactive epoxy group, have found a variety of applications
as sorbents, enzyme supports, in biomedical applications, for metal and organic
compounds sorption.1
The antimicrobial activity of the synthesized GMA/Cu copolymer against
Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger as
representatives for Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, yeast and fungi
were investigated in this study.2 The copolymer displayed good antimicrobial activity
against all analyzed microbes, which makes it a material that can be potentially used
for biomedical (antibacterial and antifungal) applications.

AB - In the present study, synthesized macroporous copolymer was used for the sorption of lindane
from an aqueous solution. This organochlorine pesticide is classified, according to US EPA, as
mutagenic and teratogenic. Residues of lindane can persist in the environment, migrate long
distances, and cause widespread contamination. In this way, lindane residues can reach the
human body through the food chain. The usage of this pesticide is banned in most countries.
However, lindane remains a serious toxicological problem at industrial sites where lindane was
used coupled with improper wastewater disposal and has led to serious contamination. In
addition, some countries still allow the production and use of lindane, and despite localized
restrictions, lindane contamination remains a global problem. Taking into account these
reasons, its removal from the environment is of a great significance. The obtained macroporous
copolymer was syntesized via suspension copolymerization and was characterized by Fourier
transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The
parameters which affect sorption efficiency of the lindane were: pH, sorption time (tsor), ion
strength (ion), rpm, and dose of sorbent. These variables were optimized by the experimental
design which include Plackett-Burman Design (PBD) and Central Composite Design (CCD).
After screening step by the PBD, the optimum conditions were obtained by the CCD where the
values were investigated in two levels. The design of experiment showed that the ion strength
and dose of sorbent were the most significant parameters, while the other variables do not have
such an effect on sorption efficiency. Accordingly, the optimum conditions to reach the maximum
recovery were: pH 8, 180 min sorption time, 300 rpm, 2 w/v % ion strength and 8 g/l dose of
sorbent. The results showed that the studied copolymer could be an efficient sorbent for trace
lindane in water with recoveries above 80 %.

AB - Lindane was one of the most commonly used organochlorine pesticides for controlling a wide
range of horticultural, agricultural, and public health pests during the second half of the 20th
century. [1] Owing to its toxic nature, bioaccumulation capability, and long transportable
nature, it belongs to a group of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). [2] Although lindane use
has been restricted or even banned, its residues persist and represent a serious environmental
problem since lindane residues are still found in water, sediments, soil, plants, and
animals. [3] Therefore, there is a growing interest in lindane removal or degradation by various
methods. In this context, sorption has received considerable attention as one of the most
effective and simplest technological approaches for the removal of lindane. In the present
study, we investigated the kinetics of the lindane sorption process onto a porous
functionalized copolymer based on glycidyl methacrylate. Five widely used isotherm kinetic
models (pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, Avrami, and fractional power
models) were employed via non-linear and linear fitting. The extent of kinetic model
compatibility was evaluated through seven error functions. According to the obtained results,
the pseudo-second-order model was the best-fitting kinetic model for describing the kinetics
of lindane sorption by the investigated sorbent.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the environmental risk from the gasoline range volatile
organic contaminants in the Sava river aquifer. The investigated area is located in New
Belgrade, in the vicinity of the largest heating plant in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. Our
previous research on the oil pollutants in the groundwater at this locality was focused on the
origin and spatial distribution of these contaminants, and estimation of potential human
health risks from exposure to these compounds. [1] The purpose of our present study is a Tier
I Environmental risk assessment in this part of the aquifer.
Groundwater samples were collected from 28 hydrogeological boreholes. Preliminary
analyses of the organic compounds extracted from the groundwater samples were conducted
by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID), and by gas chromatography
– mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were analyzed and
identified by headspace gas chromatography – mass spectrometry. Chemicals of concern were
quantified by headspace gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (HS-GC-FID).
In the groundwater samples analyzed, the most frequently detected VOCs were from the
group of the gasoline range organics. Concentrations of the individual VOCs ranged from
below detection limits to 5.2 mg/L. For each of the compounds quantified, the Risk Quotient
(RQ) was calculated as the ratio of the measured concentration of that compound in the
groundwater sample and the lowest Predicted Non-Effect Concentration for freshwater
aquatic organisms (PNEC). The PNEC values were adopted from the European chemicals
agency’s (ECHA) Registration Dossier database. [2] At some of the sampling points, the
detected concentrations of VOCs were higher than that of the PNEC values with resulting RQ
> 1. Considering the fact that the VOC compounds analyzed were present as mixtures, the
mixture RQ was calculated (as a sum of the individual RQs) for each sampling point. Out of 28
sampling points, at 7 of them the mixture RQs were higher than 1 which indicates a potentially
medium to high ecological risk from these compounds in this part of the aquifer.
In addition to the conclusion from our previous study on the human risk assessment from
exposure to the volatile organic compounds in the groundwater at this location, [1] this
research emphasizes a necessity for a continuous monitoring of the water quality in the
investigated area.

AB - Organohlorni pesticid - lindan, smatra se potencijalno kancerogenim jedinjenjem. Lindan i
njegovi ostaci mogu da opstanu u životnoj sredini veoma dugo, migrirajući i potencijalno
izazivajući zagađenje životne sredine. Ostaci lindana mogu dospeti i u ljudski organizam
GC-ECD. Osim sorpcije, uspešno je urađena i desorpcija lindana.

AB - Hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), is one of the most notorious pollutants with
health and environmental impacts due to carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic
effects on the human organism.1 Therefore, treating wastewater containing Cr(VI)
before discharge into the aquatic system is extremely necessary. In this study, the
nonlinear regression method was used to determine the kinetic and isotherm
parameters for Cr(VI) sorption from aqueous solution on hexamethylene diaminemodified 177btain177177ous copolymer based on glycidyl methacrylate (PGEHMD).2 The Avrami kinetic model provides the best correlation of the experimental data with R2 = 0.994 and χ2 = 0.004, while the Freundlich isotherm model best described the Cr(VI) sorption onto PGE-HMD copolymer indicating a heterogenous sorption process.

AB - Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been recognized as promising solvents due to their purity, high conductivity, bio-degradability, thermal stability1. These environmentally friendly solvents are important tools in the creation of green and sustainable technologies. The use of DES in polymer science is highly promising for the development of novel green materials. Therefore, DESs have been used in molecular imprinting in order to improve the properties of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP). DES are most often prepared by combining two classes of compounds: hydrogen bond donor, HBD (such as amide) and hydrogen bond acceptor, HBA (such as quaternary ammonium salt) in different molar ratios2. By mixing these components in with appropriate molar ratios, eutectic mixtures are formed in a liquid state at temperatures below 100 °C. This study reports the ability of DES-MIP as a sorbent for the removal of aromatic amine from plastic packaging. In order to obtain the most effective sorbent, DESs are prepared by combining choline chloride as HBA with different HBDs, such as urea, glycerol, and ethylene glycol. The results showed that choline chloride:urea was the most suitable DES as modifier of MIP.

AB - Cross-linked macroporous copolymers based on glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) have
been used as sorbents for metals, support for enzymes, as biomaterials etc. In this
research GMA copolymer was prepared by copolymerization of GMA (glycidyl
methacrylate) and EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), in the presence of inert
component (90 mass% of cyclohexanol and 10 mass% of dodecanol), and functionalized
with diethylenetriamine (DETA). Presence of epoxy groups in GMA-based copolymers
allows chemical modifications on the polymer in order to achieve its different
applications. GMA-based copolymer was activated with 0.1 M solution of Ga(NO3)3, at
pH 3, and 25 °C [1].
Antimicrobial activity of functionalized and activated GMA-based copolymer,
GMA/Ga, was analyzed against Staphylococcus aureus (Gram positive bacteria),
Escherichia coli (Gram negative bacteria), Candida albicans (yeast) and Aspergillus
niger (fungi) [2]. The agar-well diffusion method was used to evaluate antimicrobial
activity of GMA/Ga polymer. Nutrient agar plates were inoculated with broth of 1 MFU
microbial suspensions. Wells of 5 mm diameter were punched in the inoculated plates
using a sterile metallic borer, and then filled with 100 μL of water solution containing
nanoparticles of GMA/Ga copolymer, at various concentrations: 10, 20, and 30 mg/mL.
Control wells were filled with 100 μL of distilled water. Inoculated plates were incubated
at 37 °C/24 h for bacteria and yeast, and at 30 °C/48 h for fungus. Antimicrobial activity
of Ga activated copolymer was evaluated by measuring the inhibition zone diameter
around the wells. The GMA/Ga copolymer displayed good antimicrobial activity against
Escherichia coli and Candida albicans, which makes it selective for Gram negative
bacteria and yeasts, and as a material that can be potentially used for biomedical
applications, in food industry etc.

AB - Silver as one of the most known precious metal is used on a large scale in various industrial
branches and the release of silver ions from such industrial activities potentially can cause
serious environmental problems. Therefore, the removal of this metal from wastewater is a great
challenge, and it is crucial for the quality improvement of the environment. Porous polymer
materials with high specific surface areas and other specific physical and chemical
characteristics have gained much attention as sorbents in the field of environmental protection.
In this paper, macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)
copolymer synthesized by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with
diethylenetriamine was employed for silver ions sorption from aqueous solution at unadjucted
pH and room temperature. The sorption kinetics and isotherms were studied to establish the
mechanisms of sorption process. The kinetic data were modeled with pseudo-first-order (PFO),
pseudo-second-order (PSO), Elovich and fractional power (FP) models as well as intraparticle
diffusion (IPD) and liquid diffusion model (LFD), while the equilibrium data were analized
using Langmuir, Freundlich, Sips and Redlich-Peterson isotherm models. Eight error functions
such as coefficient of determination (R2), Marquardt’s percent standard deviation (MPSD), Chisquare
statistic test (χ2), hybrid fractional error function (HYBRID), the root mean square error
(RMSE), the sum of the errors squared (SSE), sum of the absolute errors (SAE), and average
relative error (ARE) were used to estimate the error deviations between theoretically predicted
and experimental values of sorption capacities. The best kinetic and isotherm models were
determined by normalizing eight error functions and finding the sum of normalized error value
(SNE). The sorption kinetic studies revealed that the sorption of silver by macroporous aminofunctionalized
sorbent obeys the PSO kinetic model. In addition, the results indicate that
sorption was governed by intraparticle diffusion with the evident influence of liquid film
diffusion. The obtained results showed that the sorption isotherm data were satisfactorily fitted
to the Redlich-Peterson isotherm model.

AB - The research goals of this doctoral dissertation were aimed at reviewing the overall state ofthe urban aquifer near the Sava River, in the urban part of New Belgrade with about 200000inhabitants, in the immediate vicinity of a thermal power plant.Bioremediation, as a method of remediation, was applied in order to eliminate oil - typepollution (TPH) in the groundwater of the investigated location. This approach proved to be verysuccessful, as the efficiency of bioremediation was approximately 100 %.In the soil/sediment samples of the investigated site, the identification, spatial distributionand definition of the origin of potentially toxic heavy metals, i.e. trace elements, was included.Considering the fact that this is an urban part of the environment, the ecological risks of theseelements have also been assessed. The obtained results showed that some of the analysed heavymetals originate from traffic (Pb, Cd and Zn), then from the thermal power plant (V), while thegeogenic origin (Ni, Cr) has been established for some of them. Cd, Pb, Zn and V showed a higherpotential environmental risk compared to other elements. All indices, determined in relation to thepresence of heavy metals, indicated that at some sampling points of the investigated locality there isa moderate ecological risk for the environment.Routine control of groundwater at the investigated site, after bioremediation treatment, established the presence of a "new" source of pollution, i.e. pollutants. This was a sufficient reasonto continue the research in order to identify the "new" pollutant, as well as to assess its risk tohuman health. The results showed that it was an oil-type pollutant. Analytical methods confirmedthe presence of crude gasoline, but also other compounds in the analyzed groundwater samples.VOC/BTEX compounds had proven to be the dominant compounds in the analyzed groundwatersamples, and since they are known to be potentially toxic, health risk assessments had beenimplemented. The health risks of BTEX compounds were considered from two aspects, taking intoaccount the residential scenario, with two types of recipients - adults and children, and the industrialscenario which considered the negative effects of these compounds on the health of workers at thislocation (period of one year). In the residental scenario, the estimated values of the hazard index forchildren were twice higher than the hazard indices for adults, during the same period of exposure toBTEX compounds. The estimated carcinogenic risk from benzene to children was lower than thecarcinogenic risk for adults. In the industrial scenario, the non-carcinogenic risk and the risk ofcancer due to BTEX worker exposure to contaminated groundwater compounds were mainlythrough dermal contact, and were approximately ten times higher than the risk due to the accidentalingestion. The assessed risks in this investigation were interpreted mainly as unacceptable levels ofrisk or high priority risks that require urgent consideration of remedial measures. The resultsshowed that in both scenarios the health risks were not negligible and that, accordingly, mitigationmeasures must be taken to rehabilitate the investigated location in order to prevent greaterconsequences. Mitigation measures (bioremediation) as well as preventive measures (BTEX filtersfor potable water, protective equipment for workers) that would protect against the negative effectsof these compounds on human health and the environment, are also proposed in this dissertation.

AB - Bioremediation is cheap, efficient, green technology that provides degradation of
organic compounds by microorganisms. Products of biodegradation can be less toxic
compounds or CO2 and H2O, when biodegradation is complete. The aim of this research
was detection and biodegradation of petroleum pollutants in the groundwater from
alluvial aquifer of the Sava river in the vicinity of one of the largest district heating plants
in New Belgrade (Serbia). The heating plant “New Belgrade” has been using petroleum
products as fuel for decades. Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) were analyzed in 10
groundwater samples collected from boreholes at the depths from 8 to 11 m. From these
samples, TPH were isolated using extraction method with n-hexane. TPH was further
analyzed by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC-FID). In this study
bioremediation was applied in order to degrade TPH in the groundwater of the
investigated location. This research lasted for one year [1].
In the sample P-5 the initial concentration of TPH was 1.39 mg/L and it was 0.02 mg/L
at the end of the bioremediation, with TPH reduction of 98.55 %. In the sample P-6, the
initial concentration of TPH was 1.76 mg/L, while at the end of the bioremediation it
was 0.03 mg/L, with TPH reduction of 98.30 %. In the sample P-7, the initial
concentration of TPH was 1.57 mg/L, and at the end of bioremediation it was 0.03 mg/L
with TPH reduction of 98.09 %. It can be concluded that this approach was very
successful, with an efficiency of approximately 100 % [1, 2].

AB - The oil pollutant in the Sava River aquifer in the residential area of Belgrade, Serbia was investigated in order to analyze the extent, origin and spatial distribution of the pollution, with the aim to estimate potential human health risks from exposure to the compounds detected. Analytical methods indicated that the dominant compounds in this oil pollutant were gasoline range organic compounds. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) were identified as compounds of concern and quantified by headspace gas chromatography. The concentrations of benzene measured at all sampling points were higher than the remediation value while the maximum concentrations of BTEX quantified were among the highest concentrations of these compounds reported in the petroleum-contaminated aquifers in the world. The assessment of the human health risks from exposure to BTEX-covered industrial scenario for adult receptors and residential scenario for adult receptors and children. The exposure routes analyzed were dermal contact with and ingestion of contaminated water, considering both cancer and non-cancer effects. The analysis of the lifetime incremental cancer risk indicated the potential for adverse health effects for human exposure at the investigated location, and because of that it was interpreted as an unacceptable risk level or risks of high priority which required immediate consideration for remedial measures at this location. A complete set of mitigation measures was proposed including: groundwater decontamination treatment, installation of filters for tap water, development of the system for monitoring of BTEX in the groundwater and development of the emergency response capacities at this location.

AB - The aim of this research was characterization of oil pollutants in the soil and sediments
in the vicinity of one of the largest district heating plants in Belgrade (Capital of Serbia).
The soil and sediment samples (109 in total) were collected in spring 2015. From these
samples, the extractable organic matter was isolated using a Soxhlet apparatus, and
fractionated into fractions of: saturated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, and polar
compounds. Saturated hydrocarbons were analysed by gas chromatography – mass
spectrometry.
Saturated biomarkers revealed that the surface samples contained mixtures of a diesel
fuel and native organic substance while the pollutant in the subsurface samples was a mixture
of a diesel fuel and a heavy oil fuel. Sterane and terpane biomarkers confirmed presence of
different oil pollutants at this location.
It was concluded that the oil pollutants saturated hydrocarbons at this location
originate from multiple discharges of diesel and/or a heavy oil fuel.

AB - Due to their extensive use, petroleum hydrocarbons are among the most common groundwater contaminants. Compared to the traditional methods of physical pumping of contamination from the aquifer and subsequent treatment (i.e., pump and treat), bioremediation is an economically cost-effective
technology. The aim of this remediation approach is to transform biologically contaminants, most often by microbiological activity, into non-toxic compounds.
More precisely, it is an active remediation process that involves biostimulation (increase of aquifer oxygenation, addition of nutrients) and/or bioaugmentation (injection of a concentrated and specialized population of microorganisms).
Using both biostimulation and bioaugmentation, enhanced in situ groundwater bioremediation was applied at a hydrocarbon-contaminated site in
Belgrade. The bioremediation treatment, applied over twelve months, was highly efficient in reducing the concentrations of total petroleum hydrocarbon
(TPH) to acceptable levels. The concentration of TPH in the piezometer P-5 was reduced by 98.55 %, in the piezometer P-6 by 98.30 % and in the piezometer
P-7 by 98.09 %. These results provided strong evidence on the potential of this remediation approach to overcome site-limiting factors and enhance
microbiological activity in order to reduce groundwater contamination.

AB - Concentrations of 10 potentially toxic trace elements were measured in soil samples collected from 18 sites in urban areas of Belgrade, the capital and the largest city in Serbia. Samples were analysed in order to assess the extent of soil contamination and to distinguish natural and anthropogenic input. The results demonstrated a general Zn, Pb, and Cd enrichment in surface samples, hence, after comparison with guidelines, it has been determined that there is a potential risk for human health. In the surface and buried samples, traces of cooper were detected. The highest concentrations of Cr (121 ± 12.3 mg/kg) and Ni (94.9 ± 12.6 mg/kg) were found at a sediment depth of 2 m and should be ascribed to geogenic sources. The results of HCA and PCA analysis supported a natural origin of Co, Cu, Mn, Cr, and Ni, while Cd, Zn, and Pb originated from anthropogenic inputs. Based on the pollution indices, Cd made the most dominant contribution, posing a high contamination risk in the studied area. Results of Nemerow pollution index (PIN) and potential ecological risk index (PER) demonstrated that pollution by heavy metals in sediments on several sites is moderately intense.

AB - Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from petroleum and fossil fuels are one of the most dominant pollutants in the environment. Since aromatic fraction from petroleum diesel fuel is mainly composed of PAHs, it is important to discover new microorganisms that can biodegrade these compounds. This article describes the biodegradation of the aromatic fraction separated from petroleum diesel fuel using the strain Oerskovia sp. CHP-ZH25 isolated from petroleum oil-contaminated soil. The biodegradation was monitored by gravimetry and GC x GC-TOF MS. An innovative method was applied to visualize degraded compounds in the data provided by a GC x GC-TOF MS. It was shown that Oerskovia sp. CHP-ZH25 degraded 77.4% based on gravimetric analysis within 30 days. Average rate of degradation was 14.4 mg/L/day, 10.5 mg/l/day and 4.0 mg/l/day from 0 to 10 day, 10-20 and 20-30 day, respectively. The order of PAH degradation based on decrease in peak volume after 30 days of incubation was as follows: dibenzothiophene derivatives > benzo[b]thiophene derivatives > naphthalene derivatives > acenaphthene derivatives > acenaphthylene/biphenyl derivatives > fluorene derivatives > phenanthrene/anthracene derivatives. Here we demonstrated that Oerskovia sp. CHP-ZH25 could potentially be a suitable candidate for use in bioremediation of environments polluted with different PAHs.
