AB - Plasmonic biochemical sensors, as a subgroup of optical refractometric sensors, are a topic of rapid research and development due to their ability to detect trace amounts of biochemical agents, even allowing detection of a single molecule. As such, plasmonic sensors find wide applications in forensic engineering, medicine and clinical diagnostics, food processing, environmental protection, and many more. Additionally, the use of plasmonic metametrials is not limited to sensing, and they can be used in various fields paramount to forensic sciences, such as enhanced microscopy and spectroscopy, photodetector enhancement (entire optical range – UV, VIS, and IR light), signal processing, etc.

AB - Metasurfaces are one of the most attractive research fields in recent years, in no small measure due to their use as refractometric sensors with unparalleled sensitivity, enabling sensing of even single atoms or molecules. This sensitivity is rooted in their ability to localize electromagnetic fields in volumes orders of magnitude below the diffraction limit. This is achieved by special geometry and refractive index contrast of metasurface nanocomposites. A plethora of both conductive (metals, TCO, graphene, MXenes...) and dielectric (oxides, semiconductors) materials can be used, all of them bringing different functionalities which further enhance the freedom of design when tailoring metasurfaces. However, the fundamental sensing mechanism is practically identical across all platforms and is based on the spectral shift of transmission or reflection due to a difference in the values of the real parts of refractive index between analyte and the environment.
Here we propose an alternative approach, the use of exceptional capabilities of optical metasurfaces in transforming optical space to sense analytes with identical real parts of refractive index but different imaginary parts (losses). This is becoming increasingly important with the need to detect airborne viruses. We propose a metasurface formed by cruciform openings in a thin silicon layer on a SiO2 substrate, as shown in Fig. 1a. The structure is suspended in the air. For our FEM simulation we used measured values for Si and SiO2 refractive index taken from literature. The electric field distribution and its circular power flow, both at a wavelength of 630 nm, are shown in Fig. 1b. We gradually increase the imaginary part of the refractive index in the cruciform openings, starting with the lossless case, while maintaining the real part of refractive index equal to unity (air). The dispersive properties that depend on the value of the imaginary part are shown in Fig. 1c. The circular power flow that increases the optical path, the field localization and intrinsically low losses of the structure in the visible range all cause that adding even the smallest volumes of analyte with slightly increased optical absorption in comparison to the metasurface significantly reduces transmission through the structure, despite the exceptionally low structure thickness.

AB - The present study reports on the preparation of nanocomposites consisting of polyurethane (PU) as the matrix and Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene as the nanofiller, utilizing an in-situ polymerization method. The synthesis parameters of polyurethane remained constant, while the method of adding and preparing MXene was varied. The MXene content was maintained at 1 wt.% for all prepared nanocomposites, and the soft segment content was held constant as well. For the characterization of our materials, FTIR, SEM, TGA and tensile tests were employed. Also, the properties of the prepared nanocomposites were compared to pure PU. FTIR spectra confirmed the formation of urethane bonds. SEM images demonstrated the dispersion state of MXene in the polymer matrix. TGA revealed higher thermal stability of the prepared nanocomposites compared to pure PU. Moreover, the Young’s modulus and tensile strength increased for all prepared nanocomposites.

AB - TiO2 and CeO2 are well known as oxygen sensing materials. Despite high sensitivity, the actual utilization of these materials in gas detection remains limited. Research conducted over the last two decades has revealed synergistic effects of TiO2-CeO2 mixed oxides that have the potential to improve some aspects of oxygen monitoring. However, there are no studies on the sensing properties of the TiO2-CeO2 obtained by mechanochemical treatment. We have tested the applicability of the mechanochemically treated TiO2-CeO2 for oxygen detection and presented the results in this study. The sensing layers are prepared as a porous structure by screen printing a thick film on a commercial substrate. The obtained structures were exposed to various O2 concentrations. The results of electrical measurements showed that TiO2-CeO2 films have a significantly lower resistance than pure oxide films. Mixtures of composition TiO2:CeO2 = 0.8:0.2, ground for 100 min, have the lowest electrical resistance among the tested materials. Mixtures of composition TiO2:CeO2 = 0.5:0.5 and ground for 100 min proved to be the most sensitive. The operating temperature can be as low as 320 °C, which places this sensor in the class of semiconductor sensors working at relatively lower temperatures.

AB - In this study, different forms of copper films were
electrodeposited (ED) on silicon wafer, copper and brass foils.
The effect of monocrystalline Si(111) surface cleaning method
and electrodeposition conditions and regimes (frequency in the
pulsating current (PC) regime, an addition of additives in
electrolyte for the constant galvanostatic (DC) regime, and
thickness) on surface morphology and wettability of copper films
was investigated. Optical microscopy equipped with highresolution camera, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and an
atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used for thin film
characterization and to evaluate wettability of copper films. The
sessile drop method was used for the measurement of water
contact angle. According to the obtained results, choice of
electrolyte used in ED greatly affects wettability of copper films.
It was also shown that copper films electrodeposited from basic
sulfate electrolyte with varying current regimes frequencies,
thicknesses, and cathode types have opposite trends between
roughness parameter values and the water contact angle value.
Structural-morphological changes of a film or bulk solid surface
are key parameters in determining wettability properties and the
analysis of the wetting angle oscillations, but not the only one.

AB - Interdigitated electrodes with integrated heaters
fabricated on a Si platform were investigated in this study. The
electrodes and heaters were made of gold, using standard
photolithography processes. The primary objective was to
analyze the maximum temperature achievable on the
microheater and characterize its temperature distribution. The
integrated heater achieved a maximum temperature of 420 °C
with an applied voltage of 16 V. The temperature distribution
was uniform across the entire surface of the heater, which was
located on the underside of the chip beneath the interdigitated
electrodes. At higher temperatures, the silver paste, utilized as
a bonding agent between the copper wires and heater,
underwent melting.

AB - MXenes are a relatively new class of 2D nanomaterials with promising properties. The
functional groups on the surface of the nanosheets play a vital role in interacting with other
materials, especially in nanocomposites. Biocompatibility, admirable mechanical properties,
and thermal stability are the most significant properties of poly(dimethylsiloxane)-based
polyurethanes (PU). They are highly convenient for applications in electronic devices and
implants. In this study, the MXene content was 1 wt. % for two series and 0.5 wt. % for the
other two series, while the soft segment content was 50 wt. % for all the series. The
nanocomposites were obtained using an in-situ polymerization method. The timing of adding
the MXene nanoparticles to the reaction mixture was also varied to examine the changes in
the physico-mechanical properties of the nanocomposites. Differential scanning calorimetry
(DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and tensile tests were conducted to analyze the
properties of the resulting materials. The glass transition temperature is highest for the series
in which MXenes are added in the first phase of polyaddition after the solvation of MDI,
while the series with 0.5 wt.% MXene added later into the reaction exhibit two transitions.
SEM images revealed uneven distribution and agglomeration of MXene nanoflakes when
added into the siloxane prepolymer. The tensile test indicated that the series with 0.5 wt. %
nanoflakes have significantly lower Young's modulus and tensile strength. The distribution of
nanoparticles and surface morphology are strongly influenced by the timing of adding the
MXene dispersion into the reaction mixture, as well as the nanoparticle content.

AB - Polymer-based microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and devices
are a rapidly expanding field with a wide range of applications, from
microfluidics including lab-on-a-chip systems, to new sensors and
actuators, to flexible and stretchable devices. The use of microfluidic
devices and, more broadly, MEMS structures based on polymer
materials, has increased tremendously due to their great potential in
biomedical, point-of-care, and general healthcare applications.
Currently, polymer materials (elastomers, thermoplastics, and
thermosetting polymers) are commonly used in the fabrication of
microfluidic devices and MEMS structures for their low cost, versatile
fabrication methods, biocompatibility, repeatability, and a wide range of
(customizable) material characteristics with improved functionality.
Polymers have become one of the favored functional materials for microfluidic devices, as they possess excellent mechanical and optical
properties. Furthermore, a variety of polymeric materials with unique
physical and chemical characteristics are also available. Compared to
silicon and glass, polymers are inexpensive, feature a wide variety of
material properties for meeting various application requirements of
disposable biomedical microfluidic devices and MEMS structures, and
have a wide variety of practical applications. In this chapter, different
types of polymer materials used in microfluidics and MEMS devices, the
properties of polymer materials, and the methods for fabricating
polymer-based microfluidic systems and MEMS structures are
described. This chapter highlights the most recent developments, future
trends, and challenges in the devices’ preparation methods, and
applications of polymer-based microfluidic and MEMS devices
generally. Special care has been dedicated to biosensing and applications
where polymer-based microfluidic and MEMS devices allow for new
functionalities: applications based on the use of flexible and stretchable
electronic devices, applications employing novel functional materials
(such as biomimetic scaffold tissues), and advanced sensing mechanisms
(as in plasmonic biosensing). Moreover, this chapter focuses on the
synthesis of polymeric and inorganic nanoparticles in microreactors. The
advantages and limitations of using polymer materials in MEMS
technology are also discussed.

AB - MXenes are a relatively new class of 2D nanomaterials with promising properties. The functional groups on the surface of the nanosheets play a vital role in interacting with other materials, especially in nanocomposites. Biocompatibility, admirable mechanical properties, and thermal stability are the most significant properties of poly(dimethylsiloxane)-based polyurethanes (PU). They are highly convenient for applications in electronic devices and implants. In this study, the MXene content was 1 wt. % for two series and 0.5 wt. % for the other two series, while the soft segment content was 50 wt. % for all the series. The nanocomposites were obtained using an in-situ polymerization method. The timing of adding the MXene nanoparticles to the reaction mixture was also varied to examine the changes in the physico-mechanical properties of the nanocomposites. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and tensile tests were conducted to analyze the properties of the resulting materials. The glass transition temperature is highest for the series in which MXenes are added in the first phase of polyaddition after the solvation of MDI, while the series with 0.5 wt.% MXene added later into the reaction exhibit two transitions. SEM images revealed uneven distribution and agglomeration of MXene nanoflakes when added into the siloxane prepolymer. The tensile test indicated that the series with 0.5 wt. % nanoflakes have significantly lower Young's modulus and tensile strength. The distribution of nanoparticles and surface morphology are strongly influenced by the timing of adding the MXene dispersion into the reaction mixture, as well as the nanoparticle content.

AB - Polyurethane (PU) nanocomposite materials, offer very desirable advantages over pure PU materials,as the nanocomposites have enhanced thermal, surface, mechanical and biological properties. The main goal of this study was to develop a new kind of novel nanocomposites consisting of crosslinked PUs (based on poly(dimetylsiloxane) and hyperbranched polyester) and ferrite nanoparticles (based on copper and zinc) for possible application as coatings on biomedical devices and implants. A series of PU/ferrite nanocomposites was prepared by in situ polymerization in solution. Characterization of prepared nanocomposites nanocomposites was conducted by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Copper and zinc releases were investigated by microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometry (MP-AES). Characteristics of the prepared nanocomposites when in contact with a biological environment were examined through testing their biocompatibility, and adhesion of fibroblast cells. The presence of the nanoferrite nanoparticles influenced on surface and biological properties of PU nanocomposites. The prepared PU nanocomposites with noncytotoxic chemistry could be used as promising materials for vascular implants development.

AB - Self-powered sensors are gaining a lot of attention in recent years due to their possible
application in the Internet of Things, medical implants and wireless and wearable devices. Human
breath detection has applications in diagnostics, medical therapy and metabolism monitoring. One
possible approach for breath monitoring is detecting the humidity in exhaled air. Here, we present an
extremely sensitive, self-powered sensor for breath humidity monitoring. As a power source, the
sensor uses electromagnetic energy harvested from the environment. Even electromagnetic energy
harvested from the human body is enough for the operation of this sensor. The signal obtained using
the human body as a source was up to 100 mV with an estimated power of 1 nW. The relatively low
amount of energy that could be harvested in this way was producing a signal that was modulated by
an interdigitated capacitor made out of electrochemically activated aluminum. The signal obtained
in this way was rectified by a set of Schottky diodes and measured by a voltmeter. The sensor was
capable of following a variety of different respiration patterns during normal breathing, exercise
and rest, at the same time powered only by electromagnetic energy harvested from the human body.
Everything happened in the normal environment used for everyday work and life, without any
additional sources, and at a safe level of electromagnetic radiation.

AB - Polyurethanes (PUs) are widely used polymers, with specific production able to be aimed at their
notable industrial and biomedical applications by carefully changing their ingredients, their ratios
and their preparation procedures. The popularity of PU nanocomposites is caused mainly by the
simplicity of tuning their functional properties. The choice of nanofillers, for example, clay,
graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, silicon dioxide, nanosilver or nanoferrite is miscellaneous. In
this work, PU/clay nanocomposites were prepared by in situ polymerization in the presence of
organically modified clay (Cloisite 30B) with clay loading of 0.5 wt.%. We used hyperbranched
polyester and 4,4'-methylenediphenyldiisocyanate as hard segment components, while
poly(dimethylsiloxane) macrodiol as soft segment. The influence of the soft segment content on the properties of nanocomposites was investigated by swelling behavior, crosslinking density, degree of phase separation, water absorption and contact angle measurements as well as surface free energy determination. FTIR results showed the higher degree of phase separation in nanocomposites as soft segment content decreased. Moreover, the results showed that equilibrium swelling degree of PU nanocomposites decreases, while crosslinking density increases with decreasing soft segment content. Hydrophobicity of the PU nanocomposites increases with increasing soft segment content, due to the hydrophobic character of PDMS. Namely, the surface free energy of nanocomposites films decreases in the range of 39.8 to 28.0 mJ/m2 with increasing soft segment content, confirming good surface hydrophobicity. Therefore, PU nanocomposites could be considered as promising materials suitable for coating applications.

AB - Polyurethane (PU) nanocomposites are highly utilized in biomedical devices/implants due to their excellent mechanical properties, good biocompatibility, and low cytotoxicity. These PU nanocomposites with silver nanoparticles are well known potent antimicrobial agents. Biocompatible magnetic nanoparticles such as ferrites has also gained attention especially in various fields of drug delivery, biosensing and magnetic resonance imaging which requires highly specific magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) properties such as uniform size distribution, less agglomeration and stability in the biological medium. Among MNP, copper and zinc ferrites have been broadly applicable in biomedical, optoelectronic, catalysis and drug delivery. With a view to design PU/ferrites nanocomposites and to explore their antimicrobial potential, the present preliminary study reports the preparation of PU nanocomposites with copper ferrite and zinc ferrite (1 wt.%) and with the same composition. The nanocomposites were characterized using water absorption and swelling measurements. The antimicrobial activity of these composites was investigated against four bacterial strains: Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae, and one Candida strain, C. albicans and compared with those of PU nanocomposites with silver ferrite nanoparticles. PU nanocomposites based on zinc and copper ferrites did not show antimicrobial activity, on the contrary they supported microbial attachment and growth. However, PU nanocomposites with silver ferrite did not show significant antibacterial activity but show antifungal activity and it is related with hydrophilicity of the prepared materials.

AB - Laser induced graphenization (LIG) of polymer materials has recognized as the most promising method for fabrication of flexible electronic devices. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) is suitable elastomeric materials for flexible electronics devices fabrication due to outstanding mechanical and optical properties. Namely, the low carbon content and the lacking aromatic structures in PDMS material limit the graphenization process resulting in limited conduction properties. The aim of this study was the graphenization of PDMS and PDMS-based materials by CO2 laser radiation. We prepared pure PDMS elastomer, PDMS/ethylene glycol and PDMS/Triton composite materials by using 20 wt. % of ethylene glycol or Triton in PDMS matrix. Indeed, up to now the evidence of graphenization of these PDMS-based materials has never been observed. PDMS elastomer was prepared by hydrosilylation reaction, while composite materials by blending method. The prepared PDMS-based materials were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy. The obtained results showed that surfaces of pure PDMS elastomer and PDMS/ethylene glycol composite cannot be graphenized by direct laser writing. However, by adding Triton as aromatic and carbon sources into the PDMS matrix it is possible to improve the graphenization of PDMS based materials and this material is good candidate for fabrication of flexible electrodes.

AB - Microreactors are microfluidic devices with a network of channels where chemical reactions can take place. The diameter of those channels is less than 1 millimeter. Advances of such devices are reduction of the time required for the synthesis, better control of the reaction and the size of nanoparticles. There are different materials from which microreactors can be fabricated. The most common are silicon (Si), polymers, glass, ceramics and metals. In this study, we used Si/Pyrex glass and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) materials to fabricate two types of microreactors. Both types of microreactors had integrated heaters but different length and width of microchannels. Reaction was performed on the same temperature (80⁰C) and with the same reaction time in both microreactors. Synthesis of titanium (IV)-oxide nanoparticles was performed in these microreactors, in order to show how dimension of microchannels can affect the size of nanoparticles. Size distribution of nanoparticles was determined with dynamic light scattering (DLS). It was concluded that dimensions of microchannels had great influence on the size of the nanoparticles.

AB - Laser-induced graphene (LIG) is one of the most promising graphene-based materials for the
fabrication of flexible electronic devices. However, despite huge efforts to develop LIG on new
substrates there is a lack of stretchable polymers convenient for laser graphenization.
Poly(dimethylsiloxane) is elastomer suitable for flexible electronic fabrication due to excellent
flexibility, optical transparency, hydrophobicity, UV-resistance and good thermal and oxidative
stability. Unfortunately, PDMS cannot be easily graphenized by direct laser writing because of the
low amount of carbon linked to the siloxane chains, mainly consisting of methyl groups. In this
study, a series of PDMS/Triton materials with different concentrations of Triton (1-30 wt.%) was
prepared by casted-based approach starting from divinyl-terminated-PDMS and poly(methylhydrogensiloxane).
Furthermore, direct laser graphenization of PDMS/Triton materials is proposed
for the first time. Different laser parameters and multiple writing steps have been examined in order
to induce a graphene-like structure on PDMS/Triton and to increase as much as possible its
conductivity. The prepared PDMS/Triton/graphene composites were characterized by Raman
spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and sheet resistance measurements. The results
revealed that by adding Triton it is possible to enhance the graphenization degree. The obtained
PDMS/Triton/graphene composites are suitable candidates for flexible microsupercapacitor
fabrication.

AB - In this study, a novel procedure, based on application of the Chicot–Lesage (C–L) composite hardness model, was proposed for the determination of an absolute hardness of electrolytically produced copper coatings. The Cu coatings were electrodeposited on the Si(111) substrate by the pulsating current (PC) regime with a variation of the following parameters: the pause duration, the current density amplitude and the coating thickness. The topography of produced coatings was characterized by atomic force microscope (AFM), while a hardness of the coatings was examined by Vickers microindentation test. Applying the C–L model, the critical relative indentation depth (RID)c of 0.14 was determined, which is independent of all examined parameters of the PC regime. This RID value separated the area in which the composite hardness of the Cu coating corresponded to its absolute hardness (RID <0.14) from the area in which the application of the C–L model was necessary for a determination of the absolute coating hardness (RID ≥ 0.14). The obtained value was in a good agreement with the value already published in the literature.

AB - In this study, a basic sulfate electrolyte for electrochemical copper deposition and a sulfate electrolyte with additives to improve coating quality were used. It has been shown that for the visualization of latent fingerprints, it is better to use an electrolyte without additives. The use of electrolytes with additives has not been shown to be adequate for these purposes due to the effect of filling fingerprint ridges and reducing contrast.
