AB - The plasma electrolytic oxidation process of Ti foil in the presence of a colloidal solution of Ag nanoparticles was used for the synthesis of exceptionally photocatalytically active Ag-doped TiO2 coatings. UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy was applied to follow the changes in the surface plasmon resonance band of the Ag nanoparticles as a function of the Ag:PO43− ratio in a phosphate-based electrolyte solution. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the size of the Ag nanoparticles in the range of 3–12 nm. The XRD patterns of the Ag-doped TiO2 coatings confirmed the crystalline anatase TiO2 phase regardless of the dopant concentration and without metallic Ag or crystalline Ag oxide forms. The typical porous morphology of the Ag–TiO2 coatings was observed by scanning electron microscopy. A significantly improved photocatalytic activity of the Ag–TiO2 coatings in the degradation process of the insecticide lindane (gamma isomer of benzene hexachloride) and test molecule methyl orange compared to pure TiO2 was determined using the GC technique. The degradation efficiency of Ag-doped TiO2 coatings is higher for lindane than for methyl orange.

AB - Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of contaminants characterized by their persistence, long-range transport, biomagnification in food chains and bioaccumulation in humans and wildlife. They have been shown to cause cancer in animals as well as a number of serious non-cancer health effects such as effects on the immune, reproductive and endocrine system and other health effects. The international community has responded to the threat from persisting organic pollutants (POPs), including PCBs, by negotiating a global treaty, the Stockholm Convention on POPs, with the objective of protecting human health and the environment from POPs.

AB - Macroporous (glycidyl methacrylate) GMA-based composite was
synthesized via suspension polymerization in the presence of 2 wt. % magnetic
nanoparticles and functionalized with triethylenetetramine. Copper was immobilized
on composite by contacting modified copolymer with 0.1 M solution of CuCl2, at pH
5, and 25 ̊C. The obtained composite was characterized by mercury porosimetry,
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis and atomic force
microscopy (AFM). GMA-based composites, due to their properties (size, porosity,
etc.), and the presence of reactive epoxy group, have found a variety of applications
as sorbents, enzyme supports, in biomedical applications, for metal and organic
compounds sorption.1
The antimicrobial activity of the synthesized GMA/Cu copolymer against
Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger as
representatives for Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, yeast and fungi
were investigated in this study.2 The copolymer displayed good antimicrobial activity
against all analyzed microbes, which makes it a material that can be potentially used
for biomedical (antibacterial and antifungal) applications.

AB - In the present study, synthesized macroporous copolymer was used for the sorption of lindane
from an aqueous solution. This organochlorine pesticide is classified, according to US EPA, as
mutagenic and teratogenic. Residues of lindane can persist in the environment, migrate long
distances, and cause widespread contamination. In this way, lindane residues can reach the
human body through the food chain. The usage of this pesticide is banned in most countries.
However, lindane remains a serious toxicological problem at industrial sites where lindane was
used coupled with improper wastewater disposal and has led to serious contamination. In
addition, some countries still allow the production and use of lindane, and despite localized
restrictions, lindane contamination remains a global problem. Taking into account these
reasons, its removal from the environment is of a great significance. The obtained macroporous
copolymer was syntesized via suspension copolymerization and was characterized by Fourier
transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The
parameters which affect sorption efficiency of the lindane were: pH, sorption time (tsor), ion
strength (ion), rpm, and dose of sorbent. These variables were optimized by the experimental
design which include Plackett-Burman Design (PBD) and Central Composite Design (CCD).
After screening step by the PBD, the optimum conditions were obtained by the CCD where the
values were investigated in two levels. The design of experiment showed that the ion strength
and dose of sorbent were the most significant parameters, while the other variables do not have
such an effect on sorption efficiency. Accordingly, the optimum conditions to reach the maximum
recovery were: pH 8, 180 min sorption time, 300 rpm, 2 w/v % ion strength and 8 g/l dose of
sorbent. The results showed that the studied copolymer could be an efficient sorbent for trace
lindane in water with recoveries above 80 %.

Macroporous copolymer
was syntesized via suspension copolymerization and characterized by Fourier transform infrared
spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The parameters which affect
sorption efficiency of the lindane were: pH, sorption time (tsorp), ion strength (ion), rpm, and dose
of sorbent. These variables were optimized by the experimental design which include Plackett-
Burman Design (PBD) and Central Composite Design (CCD). After screening step by the PBD,
the optimum conditions were obtained by the CCD where the values were investigated in two
levels. The design of experiment showed that the ion strength and dose of sorbent were the most
significant parameters, while the other variables do not have such an effect on sorption
efficiency. Accordingly, the optimum conditions to reach the maximum recovery were: pH 8, 180
min sorption time, 300 rpm, 2 w/v % ion strength and 8 g/L dose of sorbent. The results showed
that the studied copolymer could be an efficient sorbent for trace lindane in water with
recoveries above 80 %.

AB - Lindane was one of the most commonly used organochlorine pesticides for controlling a wide
range of horticultural, agricultural, and public health pests during the second half of the 20th
century. [1] Owing to its toxic nature, bioaccumulation capability, and long transportable
nature, it belongs to a group of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). [2] Although lindane use
has been restricted or even banned, its residues persist and represent a serious environmental
problem since lindane residues are still found in water, sediments, soil, plants, and
animals. [3] Therefore, there is a growing interest in lindane removal or degradation by various
methods. In this context, sorption has received considerable attention as one of the most
effective and simplest technological approaches for the removal of lindane. In the present
study, we investigated the kinetics of the lindane sorption process onto a porous
functionalized copolymer based on glycidyl methacrylate. Five widely used isotherm kinetic
models (pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, Avrami, and fractional power
models) were employed via non-linear and linear fitting. The extent of kinetic model
compatibility was evaluated through seven error functions. According to the obtained results,
the pseudo-second-order model was the best-fitting kinetic model for describing the kinetics
of lindane sorption by the investigated sorbent.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the environmental risk from the gasoline range volatile
organic contaminants in the Sava river aquifer. The investigated area is located in New
Belgrade, in the vicinity of the largest heating plant in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. Our
previous research on the oil pollutants in the groundwater at this locality was focused on the
origin and spatial distribution of these contaminants, and estimation of potential human
health risks from exposure to these compounds. [1] The purpose of our present study is a Tier
I Environmental risk assessment in this part of the aquifer.
Groundwater samples were collected from 28 hydrogeological boreholes. Preliminary
analyses of the organic compounds extracted from the groundwater samples were conducted
by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID), and by gas chromatography
– mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were analyzed and
identified by headspace gas chromatography – mass spectrometry. Chemicals of concern were
quantified by headspace gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (HS-GC-FID).
In the groundwater samples analyzed, the most frequently detected VOCs were from the
group of the gasoline range organics. Concentrations of the individual VOCs ranged from
below detection limits to 5.2 mg/L. For each of the compounds quantified, the Risk Quotient
(RQ) was calculated as the ratio of the measured concentration of that compound in the
groundwater sample and the lowest Predicted Non-Effect Concentration for freshwater
aquatic organisms (PNEC). The PNEC values were adopted from the European chemicals
agency’s (ECHA) Registration Dossier database. [2] At some of the sampling points, the
detected concentrations of VOCs were higher than that of the PNEC values with resulting RQ
> 1. Considering the fact that the VOC compounds analyzed were present as mixtures, the
mixture RQ was calculated (as a sum of the individual RQs) for each sampling point. Out of 28
sampling points, at 7 of them the mixture RQs were higher than 1 which indicates a potentially
medium to high ecological risk from these compounds in this part of the aquifer.
In addition to the conclusion from our previous study on the human risk assessment from
exposure to the volatile organic compounds in the groundwater at this location, [1] this
research emphasizes a necessity for a continuous monitoring of the water quality in the
investigated area.

GC-ECD. Osim sorpcije, uspešno je urađena i desorpcija lindana.

problem, and its removal from the environment is of crucial importance. In this research,
for the sorption of lindane from an aqueous solution, a macroporous copolymer based on
glycidyl methacrylate was utilized, which proved to be a very effective sorbent, with
lindane sorption of about 80 %. Analytical technique, Gas Chromatography with an
Electron Capture Detector (GC-ECD), was used for determination of lindane
concentration. In addition to sorption, desorption of lindane was also successfully
performed using different solvents, which confirmed the possibility of recycling and reuse
of the investigated polymer.

abstract = "Organochlorine pesticide - lindane, according to the US EPA classification, is considered
as potentially carcinogenic compound. Although the usage of this pesticide is banned in
many countries, it is still used in some. As persistent organic compound, lindane and its
residues can persist in the environment for a very long time, migrating over long distances,
potentially causing environmental pollution. Lindane residues can reach the human body
through the food chain, because this potentially toxic compound is prone to
bioaccumulation, and this is serious toxicological problem especially at industrial and
agricultural sites where lindane has been used directly, or has reached due to improper
wastewater disposal. Despite bans on its use, lindane contamination remains a global

AB - Lindane belongs to the persistent organic pollutants (POPs) group, which can cause carcinogenic, endocrine, and neurological problems in an organism. The widespread presence of lindane in the environment demands efficient methods of its removal. In the present work, we investigated the removal of lindane from an aqueous solution using a synthesized macroporous copolymer surface modified with different functional groups through two-step post-functionalization. The modified copolymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and mercury intrusion porosimetry. For the kinetics of lindane sorption, pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, Avrami, and fractional power models were used via linear and non-linear regression analyses. The quality of the fitting of each model to experimental data was assessed based on seven error functions: coefficient of determination (R2), Marquardt’s percent standard deviation (MPSD), Chi-square statistic test (χ2), hybrid fractional error function (HYBRID), the sum of the errors squared (SSE), sum of the absolute errors (EABS), and average relative error (ARE). The investigation of error estimation methods showed that the pseudo-second-order model best fits the experimental kinetics data for both regression analyses. The mechanism of lindane sorption was investigated by subjecting the data to the liquid film diffusion model, intraparticle diffusion model, Bangham, and Boyd models. The results showed that intraparticle diffusion was not the sole rate-controlling step; film-diffusion also affected the sorption process.

AB - Bioremediation is cheap, efficient, green technology that provides degradation of
organic compounds by microorganisms. Products of biodegradation can be less toxic
compounds or CO2 and H2O, when biodegradation is complete. The aim of this research
was detection and biodegradation of petroleum pollutants in the groundwater from
alluvial aquifer of the Sava river in the vicinity of one of the largest district heating plants
in New Belgrade (Serbia). The heating plant “New Belgrade” has been using petroleum
products as fuel for decades. Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) were analyzed in 10
groundwater samples collected from boreholes at the depths from 8 to 11 m. From these
samples, TPH were isolated using extraction method with n-hexane. TPH was further
analyzed by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC-FID). In this study
bioremediation was applied in order to degrade TPH in the groundwater of the
investigated location. This research lasted for one year [1].
In the sample P-5 the initial concentration of TPH was 1.39 mg/L and it was 0.02 mg/L
at the end of the bioremediation, with TPH reduction of 98.55 %. In the sample P-6, the
initial concentration of TPH was 1.76 mg/L, while at the end of the bioremediation it
was 0.03 mg/L, with TPH reduction of 98.30 %. In the sample P-7, the initial
concentration of TPH was 1.57 mg/L, and at the end of bioremediation it was 0.03 mg/L
with TPH reduction of 98.09 %. It can be concluded that this approach was very
successful, with an efficiency of approximately 100 % [1, 2].

AB - Infant nutrition is essential for their growth and development. This research aims to determine the total antioxidant capacity of the infant food for preterm infants and indicate adequate methods for testing the quality and biological value of milk and infant food. The total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was determined in human milk and an infant formula for premature infants. The determination of the total antioxidant capacity was made using cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry, potentiometry and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The results of three comparative electrochemical methods indicate that human milk has a higher antioxidant potential compared to infant formula, which contributes to better physiological development of the child. Fenton-based electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy method provides additional insight into TAC analysis, whereby a carbon-centered radical and an ascorbyl radical are formed in infant food. All methods can be used to determine TAC, since the results obtained individually with each method follow the same trend.

AB - Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are lipophilic, constant and bioaccumulative toxic compounds. In general, they are considered resistant to biological, photolytic, and chemical degradation with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) belonging to these chemicals. PCBs were never produced in Serbia, but they were imported and mainly used in electrical equipment, transformers, and capacitors. Our study aimed to analyse sequential multi-stage aerobic/anaerobic microbial biodegradation of PCBs present in the river sediment from the area known for long-term pollution with these chemicals. The study with an autochthonous natural microbial community (NMC model system) and NMC augmented with allochthonous hydrocarbon-degrading (AHD) microorganisms (isolated from location contaminated with petroleum products) (NMC-AHD model system) was performed in order to estimate the potential of these microorganisms for possible use in future bioremediation treatment of these sites. The laboratory biodegradation study lasted 70 days, after which an overall >33 % reduction in the concentration of total PCBs was observed. This study confirmed the strong potential of the NMC for the reduction of the level of PCBs in the river sediment under alternating multi-stage aerobic/anaerobic conditions.

AB - The oil pollutant in the Sava River aquifer in the residential area of Belgrade, Serbia was investigated in order to analyze the extent, origin and spatial distribution of the pollution, with the aim to estimate potential human health risks from exposure to the compounds detected. Analytical methods indicated that the dominant compounds in this oil pollutant were gasoline range organic compounds. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) were identified as compounds of concern and quantified by headspace gas chromatography. The concentrations of benzene measured at all sampling points were higher than the remediation value while the maximum concentrations of BTEX quantified were among the highest concentrations of these compounds reported in the petroleum-contaminated aquifers in the world. The assessment of the human health risks from exposure to BTEX-covered industrial scenario for adult receptors and residential scenario for adult receptors and children. The exposure routes analyzed were dermal contact with and ingestion of contaminated water, considering both cancer and non-cancer effects. The analysis of the lifetime incremental cancer risk indicated the potential for adverse health effects for human exposure at the investigated location, and because of that it was interpreted as an unacceptable risk level or risks of high priority which required immediate consideration for remedial measures at this location. A complete set of mitigation measures was proposed including: groundwater decontamination treatment, installation of filters for tap water, development of the system for monitoring of BTEX in the groundwater and development of the emergency response capacities at this location.

AB - Spray pyrolysis was used to deposit CeO2–TiO2 coatings on stainless steel substrates. The addition of CeO2 to TiO2 changes morphology of the coatings, causing the surface to become laced and some CeO2 ions are incorporated into TiO2 crystal lattice. Part of CeO2 is highly dispersed on the surface of TiO2. The XPS showed the simultaneous existence of Ce4+ and Ce3+ on coating surface. As the CeO2 content in composites increases from 0.5 to 20%, the band gap decreases from 3.16 to 2.88 eV, respectively. The photoactivities in the degradation of methyl orange and lindane were significantly influenced by the content of Ce in composite. For methyl orange photodegradation, the highest activity had coating with CeO2 content of 2 wt%. In contrast, the activity of coatings in lindane photodegradation gradually decreases as the CeO2 content increases. However, efficiency of CeO2–TiO2 coatings remained satisfactory for application in process of lindane degradation. Lindane conversion at 6 h of irradiation is in the range from 88% for pure TiO2 to 60% for CeO2–TiO2 coating with CeO2 content of 20 wt%. Photodegradation of lindane was enhanced on pure TiO2 sites, while methyl orange degradation is highest on composite CeO2/TiO2 species with CeO2 content of 2 wt%.

AB - Introduction and study objectives: Lindane is a generic name for γ-hexachlorocyclohexane, one of the isomers from the group of Hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCH) [1]. Due to its neurotoxic activity, it had a very wide application, from agricultural to non-agricultural purposes. As a result of its lipophility, lindane can easily pass through the blood-brain barrier. The reason of his neurotoxicity is that it can interact with GABAA receptors and obstruct GABA neurotransmitter signaling in nervous system. People who have been exposed to lindane for a long time can experience serious health problems, such as: poor liver function, cardiac arrhythmias, and irregular menstruation. Due to its adverse health effect, lindane is classified as a “pregnancy category C” chemical [2]. It is also one of the Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) that were listed under the Annex A (elimination) of the Stockholm Convention with a specific exemption for use as a human health pharmaceutical [3]. The aim of this paper was the assessment of the immobilized titanium dioxide photocalytic properties in lindane degradation. Methodology: Spray pyrolysis method was used for a synthesis of thin titanium oxide films on the foils of the stainless steel [4]. The lindane solution was incubated with TiO2 and exposed to UV/VIS light. Aliquots were taken from the reaction mixture after 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 hours. Lindane was extracted according to the EPA method 505 [5], and analyzed using an Agilent 7890A gas chromatograph (GC) connected to an electron capture detector (ECD). The GC was equipped with a Thermo Scientific™ TraceGOLD™ TG-5MT capillary column (60 m × 0.25 mm ID × 0.25 μm). The temperature program used for gas chromatography was: Initial heating temperature: 50 °C for 3 minutes, then heating at a rate of 30 °C/min to 210 °C for 20 minutes. Hydrogen with a flow rate of 60 mL/min was used as the carrier gas. Results and conclusions: Photoactivity of immobilized titanium dioxide in the degradation of lindane was measured as a percentage of lindane’s degradation compared to its initial concentration. The obtained results demonstrated that after two hours 45.32 % of lindane was degraded, while after twelve hours the percentage of degradation increased to 98.20 %. In this study we proved that the immobilized titanium dioxide can be used as a productive and fast photocatalyst for lindane photodegradation.

AB - The aim of this research was characterization of oil pollutants in the soil and sediments
in the vicinity of one of the largest district heating plants in Belgrade (Capital of Serbia).
The soil and sediment samples (109 in total) were collected in spring 2015. From these
samples, the extractable organic matter was isolated using a Soxhlet apparatus, and
fractionated into fractions of: saturated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, and polar
compounds. Saturated hydrocarbons were analysed by gas chromatography – mass
spectrometry.
Saturated biomarkers revealed that the surface samples contained mixtures of a diesel
fuel and native organic substance while the pollutant in the subsurface samples was a mixture
of a diesel fuel and a heavy oil fuel. Sterane and terpane biomarkers confirmed presence of
different oil pollutants at this location.
It was concluded that the oil pollutants saturated hydrocarbons at this location
originate from multiple discharges of diesel and/or a heavy oil fuel.

AB - The effect of free-living and spray-dried probiotic bacteria, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 564 and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 299v, on sensory characteristics of yogurt and cheese made from ultrafiltered (UF) milk, as well as their viability during storage, was investigated. Bacterial counts of free-living and spray-dried probiotic cells in yogurt remained above 7.43 log cfu/ml after 21 days, whereas in UF cheese, cell count was 8.84 log cfu/g after 56 days of storage. Starter bacteria count maintained above 7.6 log cfu/ml for yogurt and 8.5 log cfu/g for UF cheese during storage, while pH values did not significantly differ from control (without probiotic) and probiotic variants. Sensory evaluation showed that probiotic yogurt and UF cheese were evaluated with very high marks. The long-term viability of spray-dried probiotic L. plantarum 564 and L. plantarum 299v in UF cheeses indicates that these products could be successfully used as probiotic carriers. Novelty impact statement: Spray drying probiotic cells showed significantly higher viability compare to free-living cells in yogurt. Potential probiotic bacteria Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 564 maintained at high level in ultrafiltered (UF) cheese. Probiotic yogurts and UF cheeses were evaluated with excellent sensory quality.
