AB - Sustainable development is a concept that is based on the development of the human society without compromising the natural resources, which should improve human lives and protect the environment for future generations. The UN Agenda 2030 has set 17 goals aimed to transform the development of humanity in accordance with the environment, and with the social and economic rights. This concept is recognized as one of the most important concepts for the future international development. One of the four main pillars of the Agenda 2030 is a pillar Planet, which consists of five sustainability development goals (SDGs) aiming to clean the pollution on the Earth and set the sustainable use of the Earth’s resources. The aim of paper is to demonstrate the role of oil pollution bioremediation in achieving SDGs by assessing the importance of this technology and using microorganisms as natural capacity of the Earth for self-cleaning. This review article highlights the applicability of bioremediation as an oil pollution cleaning technique and reviews the compliance of bioremediation with the SDGs. According to this review, bioremediation techniques are an important element which can help in integrated approach to achieve several goals set by the Agenda 2030. Due to the incomplete biodegradation and co-contamination by other chemicals, further research is needed in order to make bioremediation a more effective biotechnological strategy. It is necessary to integrate the Agenda 2030 to university curricula and stream SDGs into scientific funding by opening dedicated calls that contribute to selected SDGs of the Agenda 2030.

AB - The plasma electrolytic oxidation process of Ti foil in the presence of a colloidal solution of Ag nanoparticles was used for the synthesis of exceptionally photocatalytically active Ag-doped TiO2 coatings. UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy was applied to follow the changes in the surface plasmon resonance band of the Ag nanoparticles as a function of the Ag:PO43− ratio in a phosphate-based electrolyte solution. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the size of the Ag nanoparticles in the range of 3–12 nm. The XRD patterns of the Ag-doped TiO2 coatings confirmed the crystalline anatase TiO2 phase regardless of the dopant concentration and without metallic Ag or crystalline Ag oxide forms. The typical porous morphology of the Ag–TiO2 coatings was observed by scanning electron microscopy. A significantly improved photocatalytic activity of the Ag–TiO2 coatings in the degradation process of the insecticide lindane (gamma isomer of benzene hexachloride) and test molecule methyl orange compared to pure TiO2 was determined using the GC technique. The degradation efficiency of Ag-doped TiO2 coatings is higher for lindane than for methyl orange.

AB - U ovom radu je ispitivano kombinovanje adsorpcije i bioremedijacije u postupku prečišćavanja voda kontaminiranih dizelom.

AB - Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of contaminants characterized by their persistence, long-range transport, biomagnification in food chains and bioaccumulation in humans and wildlife. They have been shown to cause cancer in animals as well as a number of serious non-cancer health effects such as effects on the immune, reproductive and endocrine system and other health effects. The international community has responded to the threat from persisting organic pollutants (POPs), including PCBs, by negotiating a global treaty, the Stockholm Convention on POPs, with the objective of protecting human health and the environment from POPs.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the environmental risk from the gasoline range volatile
organic contaminants in the Sava river aquifer. The investigated area is located in New
Belgrade, in the vicinity of the largest heating plant in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. Our
previous research on the oil pollutants in the groundwater at this locality was focused on the
origin and spatial distribution of these contaminants, and estimation of potential human
health risks from exposure to these compounds. [1] The purpose of our present study is a Tier
I Environmental risk assessment in this part of the aquifer.
Groundwater samples were collected from 28 hydrogeological boreholes. Preliminary
analyses of the organic compounds extracted from the groundwater samples were conducted
by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID), and by gas chromatography
– mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were analyzed and
identified by headspace gas chromatography – mass spectrometry. Chemicals of concern were
quantified by headspace gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (HS-GC-FID).
In the groundwater samples analyzed, the most frequently detected VOCs were from the
group of the gasoline range organics. Concentrations of the individual VOCs ranged from
below detection limits to 5.2 mg/L. For each of the compounds quantified, the Risk Quotient
(RQ) was calculated as the ratio of the measured concentration of that compound in the
groundwater sample and the lowest Predicted Non-Effect Concentration for freshwater
aquatic organisms (PNEC). The PNEC values were adopted from the European chemicals
agency’s (ECHA) Registration Dossier database. [2] At some of the sampling points, the
detected concentrations of VOCs were higher than that of the PNEC values with resulting RQ
> 1. Considering the fact that the VOC compounds analyzed were present as mixtures, the
mixture RQ was calculated (as a sum of the individual RQs) for each sampling point. Out of 28
sampling points, at 7 of them the mixture RQs were higher than 1 which indicates a potentially
medium to high ecological risk from these compounds in this part of the aquifer.
In addition to the conclusion from our previous study on the human risk assessment from
exposure to the volatile organic compounds in the groundwater at this location, [1] this
research emphasizes a necessity for a continuous monitoring of the water quality in the
investigated area.

AB - Growing industrialization and non-renewable resource depletion have a huge impact on alternative clean up technologies development, inducing investigation of the renewable, low-cost waste materials. Recently, lignocellulosic waste biomass, generated at a large scale by different industries, appeared as an attractive feedstock worldwide, due to its abundance, availability, multi-functionality and low cost. Since the fruits production has increasing trend all over the world, generation of lignocellulosic waste such as fruit stones (that represent approximately 1/5 of the total fruit mass) became a great environmental threat. In order to minimize negative impact on the environment, avoid greenhouse gasses emissions and help in resource depletion by its renewable nature, it is necessary to explore its performances regarding its wide application potential. Thermo-chemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass in oxygen limited conditions, in order to get biochar, has received a lot of attention recently. The biochar production requires lower energy inputs and less expensive technology compared to activated carbon (estimation is that production cost of activated carbon are six times higher than biochar costs). In this paper, waste peach stones biomass was effectively converted into biochar at 500 °C under inert (Ar) atmosphere. Pyrolysis was performed in Nabertherm 1300 muffle furnace for residence time of 1.5 h, with a heating rate of 10 °C/min, while Ar was circulated through the sample at a rate of 100 mL/min. The raw biomass (PS) and obtained biochar (PS-B) with particle size 0.1 mm < dp < 0.5 mm, were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and Raman spectrometry to understand physicochemical changes which have been occurred after pyrolysis. SEM analysis revealed the increased surface area due to the visible augmentation of pores and roughness. FTIR analysis showed that many bands present in native biomass cannot be observed in biochar, due to the conversion or removal of the most of the functional groups. Prominent bands have confirmed presences of aromatic compounds in biochar: at 1592 cm−1 (C=C bond stretching derived from aromatic rings in the lignin), 1030 cm-1 (alcohol C-O stretching vibration) and in the region 900 to 700 cm−1 (originating from aromatic compounds). These finding are in accordance with results from Raman analysis, where D and G bands (at 1350 cm-1 and 1580 cm-1 respectively), indicate the presence of poly-aromatic hydrocarbons. Thermo-chemically modified biomass like this has a great application potential: as a pollutants sorbent, biofuel, soil amendment, biocarriers, and in construction and electronic industries.

Thermo-chemically modified biomass like this has a great application potential: as a pollutants sorbent, biofuel, soil amendment, biocarriers, and in construction and electronic industries.",

AB - Background and objectives: Human milk is the golden standard in infant nutrition. A very important segment of nutritional support for premature children is milk banks. In milk banks, during the process of storage and pasteurization, the characteristics of milk change, and consequently, its quality changes as well. Current electrochemical techniques (green analytical chemistry) can be used to determine the quality of milk regarding its total antioxidant capacity (TAC). Methods: The application of various electrochemical methods, such as differential pulse voltammetry, cyclic voltammetry, polarography, or potentiometry, enables monitoring of the quality and redox capacity of human milk and infant food. Changes in the TAC of human milk were examined after thermal treatments, which are commonly used in milk banks, as well as after supplementation with a fortifier. Results: The results obtained using electrochemical methods were compared to the most commonly used spectrophotometric methods for monitoring total antioxidant capacity. The obtained results showed that electrochemical methods can overcome the limitations of spectrophotometric methods, such as lower sensitivity, slower reaction and insensitivity at higher antioxidant concentrations. Cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry methods can be successfully applied as fast methods for testing milk quality in milk banks and clinical studies. Conclusion: The tested electrochemical methods are fast, cheap, and reliable in determining TAC since they are based on direct measurement of electron-donating components of milk and enable the quantitative determination of TAC in human milk and infant food. They are very important for routine and daily determinations of TAC in infant food, as well as for the control of milk freshness, especially after using fortifiers in neonatal units.

AB - Freeze storage and pasteurization of human milk are common treatments in milk banks. Thermal treatment changes the quality of milk for preterm infants’ nutrition, and the aim of this paper was to examine the nutritional profile and antioxidant potential of preterm human milk after storage and pasteurization, and also after supplementation with fortifier. The effects of storage processes were estimated on mature preterm milk of 30 breastfeeding women. Total proteins, lipids and lactose were determined after thermal processing and supplementation of mature preterm milk with fortifier. The antioxidant capacity was determined using the ferric reducing antioxidant potential method and lipid peroxidation inhibition assay. Protein concentration decreased after frozen storage and pasteurization (p<0.05). Pasteurization further reduced the lipid concentration after freezing. The ferric reducing antioxidant potential decreased after thermal treatments (p<0.05). Supplementation of mature milk with fortifier increased the concentration of proteins, lipids and lactose. Our findings demonstrated that storage and pasteurization processes affect the basic nutritional composition and antioxidant capacity of preterm human milk. In order to ensure adequate nutrition for preterm infants with preterm human milk, supplementation, especially with high concentrations of proteins and lipids, is necessary after thermal treatments.

AB - Platinum-based drugs are widely recognized efficient anti-tumor agents, but faced with multiple undesirable effects. Here, four dinuclear platinum(II) complexes, [{Pt(1,2-pn)Cl}2(μ-pydz)]Cl2 (C1), [{Pt(ibn)Cl}2(μ-pydz)]Cl2 (C2), [{Pt(1,3-pn)Cl}2(μ-pydz)]Cl2 (C3) and [{Pt(1,3-pnd)Cl}2(μ-pydz)]Cl2 (C4), were designed (pydz is pyridazine, 1,2-pn is ( ±)-1,2-propylenediamine, ibn is 1,2-diamino-2-methylpropane, 1,3-pn is 1,3-propylenediamine, and 1,3-pnd is 1,3-pentanediamine). Interactions and binding ability of C1–C4 complexes with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) has been monitored by viscosity measurements, UV–Vis, fluorescence emission spectroscopy and molecular docking. Binding affinities of C1–C4 complexes to the bovine serum albumin (BSA) has been monitored by fluorescence emission spectroscopy. The tested complexes exhibit variable cytotoxicity toward different mouse and human tumor cell lines. C2 shows the most potent cytotoxicity, especially against mouse (4T1) and human (MDA-MD468) breast cancer cells in the dose- and time-dependent manner. C2 induces 4T1 and MDA-MD468 cells apoptosis, further documented by the accumulation of cells at sub-G1 phase of cell cycle and increase of executive caspase 3 and caspase 9 levels in 4T1 cells. C2 exhibits anti-proliferative effect through the reduction of cyclin D3 and cyclin E expression and elevation of inhibitor p27 level. Also, C2 downregulates c-Myc and phosphorylated AKT, oncogenes involved in the control of tumor cell proliferation and death. In order to measure the amount of platinum(II) complexes taken up by the cells, the cellular platinum content were quantified. However, C2 failed to inhibit mouse breast cancer growth in vivo. Chemical modifications of tested platinum(II) complexes might be a valuable approach for the improvement of their anti-tumor activity, especially effects in vivo.

AB - Infant nutrition is essential for their growth and development. This research aims to determine the total antioxidant capacity of the infant food for preterm infants and indicate adequate methods for testing the quality and biological value of milk and infant food. The total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was determined in human milk and an infant formula for premature infants. The determination of the total antioxidant capacity was made using cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry, potentiometry and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The results of three comparative electrochemical methods indicate that human milk has a higher antioxidant potential compared to infant formula, which contributes to better physiological development of the child. Fenton-based electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy method provides additional insight into TAC analysis, whereby a carbon-centered radical and an ascorbyl radical are formed in infant food. All methods can be used to determine TAC, since the results obtained individually with each method follow the same trend.

AB - The mutual interaction of metal ions (lead, zinc and copper) on removal efficiency in binary and
ternary systems, by biosorbent based on alkali treated apricot shells (Prunus armeniaca L.) was
examined. The evaluation was done in batch system at two metals concentrations: 0.2 and 0.5mmol/
dm3. Tested biosorbent exhibited preferential uptake of lead in a multimetal systems. It is evident that mutual inhibition exists in all multimetal systems, but systems containing lead ex-hibited extreme inhibition toward copper and zinc ions. Process of sorption depends not only on specific chemistry of each metal, their affinity toward binding sites and the type of metal binding onto biosorbent, but also on sorbent chemical and morphological characteristics. In multimetal systems, tested sorbent showed preferential sorption orders: Pb (II)>Cu (II)>Zn (II).

abstract = "The mutual interaction of metal ions (lead, zinc and copper) on removal efficiency in binary and
ternary systems, by biosorbent based on alkali treated apricot shells (Prunus armeniaca L.) was
In multimetal systems, tested sorbent showed preferential sorption orders: Pb (II)>Cu (II)>Zn (II).",

AB - The storage of human milk, the gold standard in infant nutrition, in a milk bank requires its
freezing and then a pasteurization process immediately before its use in the diet of preterm
infants. Thermal processes affect the composition and quality of milk. The objective of this
research was to examine the influence of thermal processes on nutritive properties and
quality of preterm milk. The effects of thermal processes were estimated on mature preterm
milk of 30 breastfeeding women. Total proteins, lipids, lactose and minerals were determined
before and after thermal processing and supplementation of mature preterm milk with
fortifier. The protein concentration decreased after frozen storage and pasteurization.
Pasteurization further reduced the lipid concentration after freezing, while there was no
effect on lactose concentration. The mineral contents of mature milk were lower than
necessary for the optimal growth of preterm infants, and thermal processes did not change
its concentration. The supplementation of mature milk with a fortifier increased the
concentration of macronutrients and micronutrients. Our study examined the influence of
thermal processes on the nutritive properties of infant meals for preterm babies. Storage and
pasteurization processes affect the basic nutritional composition and quality of preterm
human milk. In order to ensure adequate nutrition for preterm infants with preterm human
milk, supplementation, especially with high concentrations of proteins and lipids, is necessary
after thermal treatments.
