AB - This study focused on investigating the effects of voltage and deposition time on the formation and morphology of hydroxyapatite/titanium oxide coatings, which were obtained using an in-situ synthesis process. The coatings were prepared under various voltage conditions and deposition times to analyze their characteristics. To evaluate the morphology of the coatings, optical microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) techniques were employed. Additionally, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was utilized to confirm the presence of hydroxyapatite coatings on the substrate. The results revealed that an increase in voltage led to a more uniform coating. The voltage parameter had a significant impact on the morphology of the initial hydroxyapatite powder, causing the agglomerates to disperse and resulting in smaller particle sizes within the coating. Furthermore, the FTIR analysis provided solid evidence of the presence of hydroxyapatite within the obtained coatings. These findings emphasize the importance of voltage control and deposition time in the in-situ synthesis process for achieving desirable hydroxyapatite/titanium oxide coatings. Understanding the influence of these parameters on coating formation and morphology can contribute to the development of improved techniques for biomedical applications, such as enhanced osseointegration in orthopedic and dental implants.

AB - Kaolinite/illite (KUb) and sepiolite (SEP) clays were used to study Cr(III) adsorption removal from aqueous solutions so that they could be utilized after saturation for ceramic manufacturing. SEP had a larger specific surface area and a higher PZC than KUb. The removal of Cr(III) was evaluated using a batch equilibration procedure at pHi = 4 and pHi = 6. Fast removal kinetics were observed for both clays. Maximum removal capacity was determined by changing the concentration of Cr(III) while keeping the concentration of clay constant and by altering the amount of clay while keeping the concentration of Cr(III) constant. In all situations, SEP had greater capacity than KUb, and capacity was greater for both clays at higher pHi. Not only did the pHi impact the removal capacity and efficiency, but so did the pH during adsorption and the initial concentration of Cr(III). Because of the higher PZC, the pHf for SEP was higher for the same pHi. The higher the pH and Cr(III) concentration, the higher the probability of Cr(OH)3 precipitation and the higher the removal capacity. Dried saturated clays were uniaxially pressed and sintered at 1000 °C for 2 h. The densities of the sintered materials were nearly identical to those of pure clay-based materials, but the compressive strengths were higher, which is significant for the use of saturated clays as raw materials in ceramic manufacturing. Leaching of Cr from SEP-based material was significantly higher than from KUb-based material probably due to the presence of CaCO3 in the SEP.

AB - Novel macroporous copolymers of glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate with mean pore size diameters ranging from 150 to 310 nm were synthesized by dispersion polymerization and modified with ethylenediamine. The glutaraldehyde and periodate method were employed to immobilize horseradish peroxidase (HRP) onto these carriers. The activity of the immobilized enzyme was greatly affected by the pore size of the carrier. The highest specific activities of 9.65 and 8.94 U/g of dry weight were obtained for HRP immobilized by the periodate-route onto poly(GMA‐co‐EGDMA) carriers with pore size diameters of 234 and 297 nm, respectively. Stability studies showed an improved operational stability of immobilized peroxidase at 65 °C and in an organic solvent. HRP immobilized on a copolymer with a pore size of 234 nm, showing the highest specific activity and good stability, had higher activities at almost all pH values than the native enzyme and the increased Km value for pyrogallol oxidation. Immobilized HRP retained 80% of its original activity after five consecutive cycles of the pyrogallol oxidation and 98% of its initial activity in a storage stability study. Enzyme immobilized onto the macroporous copolymer with the pore size diameter of 234 nm showed a substantial degree of phenol removal achieved by immobilized peroxidase.

AB - Hazelnut shell ash was investigated as a new base catalyst for the transesterification of used cooking sunflower oil to biodiesel. To understand its catalytic properties, the prepared ash was characterized by EDX, XRD, TGA/DTA, Hg porosimetry, N2 physisorption, FE-SEM, and basic strength measurements. The effects of the catalyst loading in the range of 1–5% of the oil weight and the methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 6:1–18:1 on the kinetics of the fatty acid methyl esters synthesis were established. Moreover, the leaching and reusability of the catalyst were assessed. The obtained results revealed that hazelnut shell ash was mostly composed of K, Ca, and Mg. The highest ester content (98%) was achieved at the catalyst loading of 5%, the methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 12:1, and the reaction time of 10 min. The contribution of homogeneous catalysis because of the catalyst leaching was confirmed but did not determine the overall reaction rate. The catalyst can be reused after the recalcination at 800 °C for 2 h achieving the high methyl esters content (>96%) in 30 min after three subsequent runs. The overall reaction followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics with respect to triacylglycerols. A linear relationship between the apparent reaction rate constant and the catalyst loading and the methanol-to-oil molar ratio was determined. The determined value of the reaction rate constant was 0.0576 dm6/(min•mol2).

AB - Titanium and its alloys are widely used in medical devices, orthopedic implants, dental implants, and device components of aerospace industries. It is attractive for having superior room and elevated temperature mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance and low weight. However, titanium and its alloys are not fully applicable replacement in biomedical application. Suitable surface modification of titanium is needed in order to obtain Ti with improved properties. This paper deals with the optimization of the in-situ anodizing/anaphoretic electrodeposition process of hydrothermally synthesized hydroxyapatite (HAp) on Ti substrate for subsequent obtaining of HAp/TiO2 composite coatings without multi-stage pre-treatment and post-treatment of titanium and oxidized titanium surface. Coatings were prepared at constant voltage of 60 V and deposition time of 1 min. The morphology of coatings was investigated using optical microscope and field emission scanning electron microscope. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements were also performed. The coating with optimal properties was obtained by deposition from suspension containing 1.0 M NaOH.

AB - Hydrogels are promising materials for biomedical applications due to highly hydrated, porous, permeable structure with possibility to accommodate living cells, drugs, or bioactive factors. In this paper, we reported poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA)/gelatin IPN hydrogels, synthesized by free-radical polymerization, with adjustable mechanical, structural, physicochemical, and biological characteristics. The influence of methacrylic acid (MAA), gelatin, and cross-linker in the precursor solution on hydrogels properties was investigated. The increasing concentration of MAA, gelatin, and cross-linker led to better mechanical properties, lower porosity, and water content. The compressive mechanical properties of hydrogels were significantly better in comparison to a single-network PMAA hydrogel, while the obtained compressive strength values up to 16 MPa were comparable with tough hydrogels. The increasing concentration of MAA and cross-linker reduced fatigue resistance and degradability, while the increase in gelatin content acted in the opposite way. Swelling tests in different pH conditions demonstrated strong pH-sensibility of the hydrogels, which was more pronounced as MAA concentration was higher, and gelatin and cross-linker concentrations were lower. In addition, the hydrogels strongly promoted the proliferation of human periodontal ligament stem cells and MRC-5 cells as assayed by MTT assay.

AB - The catalytic activity of the walnut shell ash was investigated in the biodiesel production by the sunflower oil methanolysis. The catalyst was characterized by the TG-DTA, XRD, Hg porosimetry, N2 physisorption, SEM, and Hammett method. In addition, the effects of the catalyst loading and the methanol-to-oil molar ratio on the methyl esters synthesis were tested at the reaction temperature of 60 °C. The walnut shell ash provided a very fast reaction and a high FAME content (over 98%). As the reaction occurred in the absence of triacylglycerols mass transfer limitation, the pseudo-first-order model was employed for describing the kinetics of the reaction. The catalyst was successfully reused four times after the regeneration of the catalytic activity by recalcination at 800 °C.

AB - The design of complex polymeric materials with predefined task-specific properties meets challenging issues: to establish synthesis-structure-properties relationship, as well as to understand the arrangement and interactions of the involved components. Hybrid networks of protein (casein) and polyelectrolyte (poly(methacrylic acid)) were synthesized and their swelling, dynamic-mechanical and morphological properties were investigated as functions of the neutralization degree of methacrylic acid and the concentrations of caseinate and crosslinker. The domination of different interactions between components led to diverse forms of casein macromolecules- from micelles to unfold chains. That resulted in very different structures and thereby properties of derived hybrid networks: from porous unswellable to highly swellable and reinforced ones. A great opportunity to easily modulate the final characteristics of the reported hybrid system to fit the need of specific application just through the change of one synthesis parameter was thereby demonstrated.

AB - Goals. The goal of this study was a development of biocompatible composite hydrogels, structurally similar to native bone tissue, by incorporation of ~60 wt % of calcium hydroxyapatite (HA) into a matrix of hydrogels. Also, a possibility to control swelling kinetic and equilibrium swelling degree (SDeq) of hydrogels, by altering the degree of neutralization of the precursor (DN) was examined. Methods. Composite hydrogels, based on HA and poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA), were synthesized by free-radical polymerization with different DN. Theoretical content of HA in synthesized composites was 60 wt %. Composites were synthesized by methods of dynamic mechanical analysis and scanning electron microscopy. SDeq and swelling kinetic were examined in distilled water and simulated body fluid. Results. Morphological observations revealed uniform distribution and strong bond of spherical HA particles within the polymer matrix. Swelling analyses demonstrated that SDeq is directly proportional to DN, while rheological examinations indicated inverse proportion between DN and storage modulus, but due to the HA particles inclusion, mechanical properties of composites were significantly better compared to monophasic PMAA hydrogels. Significance. Simple method of synthesis of composite hydrogels with high content of filler nanoparticles is presented. Incorporation of HA nanoparticles significantly improved mechanical properties of hydrogels, while at the same time was demonstrated a possibility to control swelling kinetic by influencing the DN.
Svi sintetisani kompoziti sadrže visok maseni udeo HA (~60 mas %). .

AB - Poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) based nanocomposites with unmodified and organomodified sepiolites were prepared by solution casting method. The sepiolites were modified with short (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (SEP-SI) by using covalent grafting or with long hexadecylamine (SEP-HDA) by using ionic exchange. In order to reveal the influence of the organomodification on the nanoclay dispersion and the properties of the nano composites XRD, DSC, TG, SEM, TEM, optical microscopy, melt rheology and dynamic-mechanical analyses were performed. A better dispersion was achieved when organomodified sepiolites instead of native ones were used as fillers. As deduced from the melt rheology data, by analysis of the Cole-Cole plots, the best dispersion was obtained for SEP-SI nanoclay. The thermal stability was not improved, however in the initial stages of the thereto-oxidative degradation a delay in the weight loss was observed for nanocomposites with organomodified sepiolites. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were improved in comparison to PCL, particularly for those with modified sepiolites. In terms of mechanical properties the use of sepiolite modified with HDA gave the best results, as a consequence of better interaction between longer alkyl hydrophobic part of the organic modificator and the hydrophobic PCL matrix.

AB - The aim of this work was to investigate the influence of specific anions on the cross-linking process of highly methoxylated pectin using the following copper salts CuSO4; Cu(C2H3O2)(2); CuCl2; and Cu(NO3)(2) wherein the initial salt concentrations were varied from 0.5 up to 10 g l(-1). It was found that the anions affected the sorption capacity wherein the Cu2+ sorption capacity from the sulphate solution was the highest, while it decreased in the presence of CH3COO-, Cl- and NO3- ions, respectively. This difference was mostly pronounced at the higher initial salt concentrations (co(Cu2+) > 2 g l(-1)). The obtained beads were characterized by FTIR, MS, SEM/EDS microanalysis and mechanical compression tests up to 80% of deformation. The sorption data were applied to the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models and various calculated parameters confirmed the sulphate anion supportive nature in metal ion binding. The value of the K-f parameter for the cross-linking process of pectin in the presence of acetate, chloride and nitrate was approximately the same (K-f approximate to 0.027 g g(-1)), while it was higher in the presence of sulphate anions by more than 20% (K-f = 0.0352 g g(-1)). The predicted 1/n values (1/n LT 1, 1/n > 1, 1/n = 1 for the sulphate, nitrate and acetate, and chloride anions, respectively) were the quantitative confirmation of the specific interactions involved in the cross-linking mechanism caused by different anions. The established anion influence was in accordance with the typical ion-specific influence on macromolecules in aqueous systems proposed by Hofmeister.

AB - This study is focused on the surface modifications of the materials that are used for antimicrobial water treatment. Sorbents of different origin were activated by Ag+-ions. The selection of the most appropriate materials and the most effective activation agents was done according to the results of the sorption and desorption kinetic studies. Sorption capacities of selected sorbents: granulated activated carbon (GAC), zeolite (Z), and titanium dioxide (T), activated by Ag+-ions were following: 42.06, 13.51 and 17.53 mg/g, respectively. The antimicrobial activity of Ag/Z, Ag/GAC and Ag/T sorbents were tested against Gram-negative bacteria E. coli, Gram-positive bacteria S. aureus and yeast C. albicans. After 15 min of exposure period, the highest cell removal was obtained using Ag/Z against S. aureus and E. coli, 98.8 and 93.5%, respectively. Yeast cell inactivation was unsatisfactory for all three activated sorbents. The antimicrobial pathway of the activated sorbents has been examined by two separate tests - Ag+-ions desorbed from the activated surface to the aqueous phase and microbial cell removal caused by the Ag+-ions from the solid phase (activated surface sites). The results indicated that disinfection process significantly depended on the microbial-activated sites interactions on the modified surface. The chemical state of the activating agent had crucial impact to the inhibition rate. The characterization of the native and modified sorbents was performed by X-ray diffraction technique, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope. The concentration of adsorbed and released ions was determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The antimicrobial efficiency of activated sorbents was related not only to the concentration of the activating agent, but moreover on the surface characteristics of the material, which affects the distribution and the accessibility of the activating agent.

AB - The influence of deposition temperature and concentration of NaNO(2) in the phosphating bath on the surface morphology and coverage of iron-phosphate coatings on low carbon steel was investigated. The phosphate coatings were chemically deposited on steel from phosphate bath at different temperatures (30-70 degrees C) and with the addition of different amounts of accelerator, NaNO(2) (0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 g dm(-3)). The morphology of phosphate coatings was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The composition of iron-phosphate coatings was determined using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Surface coverage was evaluated by the voltammetric anodic dissolution (VAD) technique. It was shown that the increase in temperature of the NaNO(2)-free phosphating bath up to 70 degrees C caused an increase in surface coverage. The addition of NaNO(2) in the phosphating bath significantly increased the surface coverage of phosphate coatings deposited at temperatures lower than 50 degrees C. The phosphate crystals were of laminated and needle-like structures for deposits obtained at temperatures lower than 50 degrees C, while at higher temperatures needle-like structure was transformed to laminated structure. The increase in NaNO(2) concentration in the phosphating bath from 0.1 to 1.0 g dm(-3) did not significantly increase the surface coverage, but decreased the crystals size, consequently favouring the phosphate nucleation and better packing of the crystals.
