AB - Tebuconazole, a pesticide that presents risks for ecosystems, groundwater and human health, was degraded on a gold electrode as the catalyst in 0.05 M NaHCO3 using cyclic voltammetry (CV). First, tebuconazole was characterized on the gold electrode using CV and square wave voltammetry (SWV). The gold electrode, being highly sensitive, provided linear relationships (currents vs. concentrations) in the range: (0.076-0.76 mu mol dm(-3)). Based on the CV measurements, the investigated process is irreversible and diffusion controlled. The observed catalytic role of the Au electrode in the oxidation of tebuconazole and the data obtained from CV and SWV provided the experimental conditions for the degradation of tebuconazole. The degradation was performed by continuous cycling followed by gas chromatography mass spectroscopy (GC MS) analysis. This enabled the catalytic elimination of tebuconazole for 60 min, which promoted the use of a gold electrode as the catalyst for the degradation of environmental pollutants. The scheme of the possible mechanism of tebuconazole degradation is given.

AB - For the first time the electrochemical degradation of the pesticide dimethenamid-P was studied. Its direct electrochemical degradation, using potential cycling at a gold electrode, was performed by cyclic voltammetry and HPLC analysis of electrolyte after 72 h showed 56.8% of degradation. HPLC-MS indicates the formation of degradation products through the elimination of chlorine atom and C-N bond cleavage. By indirect electrolysis using DSA Ti/PtOx and DSA Ti/RuO2 electrodes during 30 minutes 87.2% and 88.3% of dimethenamid-P was degradated, respectively. The high percentage of degradation of dimethenamid-P was achieved with non time consuming, simple and cheap electrochemical processes.

AB - There is growing concern that pollution from petrochemical and oil refinery installations in Pancevo (Serbia) has increased the incidence of various diseases including cancer The aim of our study was to investigate cancer incidence in Pancevo and to compare it with the region of central Serbia. Cancer incidence data were obtained from the corresponding Serbian Cancer Registries. Systematic local monitoring of benzene, toluene and methyl mercaptane in the atmosphere within Pancevo's industrial area indicated that the average monthly and yearly concentrations often exceeded permitted levels proposed by EU standards (5 mu gm(-3)). Cancer incidence was lower in Pancevo than in central Serbia (the standardised incidence for all types of cancers in Pancevo was 218.3 and in central Serbia it was 241.7 per 100,000 inhabitants). The available data do not allow us to correlate air pollution in Pancevo with increased cancer incidence.

AB - A gold electrode was used for the qualitative and quantitative electrochemical determination of analytical methomyl in a neutral electrolyte (0.050 M NaHCO3) using cyclic linear sweep voltammetry. In the potential range from -800 mV vs. SCE to 1000 mV vs. SCE the analytical methomyl was quantitatively determined in the concentration range 4.0-16 mg L-1. In the potential range from -1300 mV vs. SCE to 1300 mV vs. SCE, methomyl was qualitatively determined by two anodic and four cathodic reactions. Cycling the potential in this range for 150 min caused the degradation of the molecule, which was confirmed by HPLC analysis. On the other hand, technical methomyl exhibited an inhibition of the gold electrode surface due to the impurities.

AB - The aim of the present study was to examine the oxidative properties and an assay of azithromycin and Hemomycin (R) at a gold electrode in neutral electrolyte using cyclic linear sweep voltammetry. The maximum value of the current of the oxidation peak of pure azithromycin and azithromycin from Hemomycin (R) at 0.6 V versus SCE in 0.05 M NaHCO3 and in a mixture methanol -0.05 M NaHCO3 (1:1) at a scan rate of 50 mV s(-1) is a linear function of the concentration in the range of 0.235-0.588 mg/cm(3). HPLC analysis of the bulk of electrolyte confirmed the data obtained by analysis of the values of the current peak concerning the concentration of antibiotic in the investigated concentration range. The role of methanol, when present, is discussed. In the case of azithromycin, the presence of methanol leads to higher current peak values. However, in the case of Hemonlycin (R), methanol should be avoided because of its inhibiting influence on the qualitative and quantitative determination of azithromycin and on the azithromycin/lactose, separation.
