Availability of toxic elements in roadside soils (highway 75, Vojvodina, Serbia): is there any significant contamination risk?

AB  - In this paper we provide the observations of a group of toxic elements Cu, Pb, Cr, Co, Ni, Pb, V, Zn, Sb, and Mo, in the soils that are sampled at the distances of 1 m and 5 m (two layers) from the road (Highway 75, north section). The observation of toxic elements are indicating a level of the existing contamination, availability and ecological risk. The mean values of the content of the elements Cr, Cu, Mo, Pb, Sb and Zn are lower with respect to the reference MAC values, whereas the mean and particular values of the content of Co, V, and Ni are higher. The content of the Sb, Pb, Мo, Cr, Cu, V and Zn reach higher values in the surface layer near to the road – at a distance of 5 m. The particular values of Pb, Zn and Cu only in the surface samples, at both distances, at two sampling localities, are indicating the presence of anomaly. However, the results of the content of the elements in most mobile forms are suggesting a presence of insignificant content of the toxic elements, which can easily become available to the environment and spread by streams or groundwater. The results of the Risk assessment code (RAC) confirms that there is a lower risk of contamination of the near-road environment by these toxic elements.

AB  - Stepen kontaminacije zemljišta toksičnim elementima definiše se u skladu sa važećim pravilnicima na teritoriji R. Srbije. Neki od definisanih elemenata su uvek toksični za biljke ili ljude (Pb, Cd, As, Hg, V, Sb, Be), a drugi esencijalni, ali u zavisnosti od koncentracija toksični (Cr, Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, Se, Mo...). Međutim, da bi se utvrdio realan stepen rizika, posebno je važno utvrditi sadržaj onih oblika koji su potencijalno mobilni odnosno biodostupni. U ovom radu, utvrđen je sadržaj navedenih toksičnih i potencijalno toksičnih elemenata u onom obliku koji predstavlja opasnost kako za biljke, tako i za ljude, putem lanca ishrane. Dobijeni rezultati imaju poseban značaj sa stanovišta kvaliteta  poljoprivrednih proizvoda kao i kvaliteta poljoprivrednog zemljišta Srednjeg Banata.

AB  - Potentially harmful trace elements pollution in soils is a worldwide environmental problem that has received increasing attention over the last few decades because of its adverse effects. Metals in soils are present in different chemical forms which affect their ability to transfer. The objective of this body of work was to assessment of contamination degree of elements Cu, Hg, Ni, Cr, Co, Zn, Pb, Cd, As and B in agricultural and grazing soils surrounding the industrial objects, in order to quantify their real influence and real health risk by using investigated soils as croplands. Combination of different methods was applied for estimation of the environmental status of soils and to determine the potential risk of ecological damage. Obtained results indicate that heavy metal contamination should be taken into account during development of management strategies to protect the soil in the Serbia.

AB  - During geological prospecting of the Belgrade city center in 2006 a new occurrence of gypsum was found in one borehole. Gypsum is rarely occurred mineral in Serbia, therefore every new occurrence of this mineral is of special interest. The last find of gypsum in Belgrade city, however, is not so surprising, because quite recently the mineral was found in the close proximity to Belgrade city - in Jajinci village. Gypsum occurrences are important because they can help in better understanding the geology of the studied areas, in reconstructing the climate and other circumstances related to the origin of gypsum. For precise determining the mineral and chemical composition of the sampled borehole, X-ray pow-der diffraction, DTA, TGA, and chemical methods were employed.
