AB - Due to life in extreme environments, cyanobacteria and algae from cave biofilms that form at the entrances or deep inside the cave around artificial lights are of increasing interest to many scientists. It is well-known that many phototrophic microorganisms are first to colonize exposed substrata and produce the organic matter on which other biofilm constituents relly. Many studies dealing with phototrophic microorganisms from biofilms focus on the diversity and community composition of cyanobacteria and algae, while quantitative assessments are rarely implemented. Biofilm sampling was conducted in Degurić and Vernjikica Cave located in Western and Eastern Serbia, respectively. Ecological parameters (temperature, relative humidity, light intensity) and distance from the entrance were measured. Additionally, chlorophyll content, as well as biofilm parameters (water content, organic and inorganic matter) were determined. The abundance of phototrophic microorganisms was assessed on microscope slides which contained 1 mg of biofilm that was dehydrated for a short period of time and homogenized prior to slide preparation, and then rehydratated. The biomass of recorded cyanobacterial and algal taxa was calculated by applying geometric approximations and standard mathematical formulas. In Degurić Cave, at the sampling site where the highest biomass was documented, the higher diversity, water content and chlorophyll values were also recorded, while in Vernjikica Cave a high content of organic matter was documented. According to the multivariate analyses performed, the biomass of simple trichal Cyanobacteria, Bacillariophyta, and Xanthophyta was positively correlated with the content of organic matter in biofilm and light intensity, while coccoid and heterocytous Cyanobacteria and Chlorophyta showed a positive correlation with water content in the biofilm, relative humidity and distance from the entrance. The total biomass was positively correlated with the chlorophyll content, organic matter and light intensity, and negatively with the distance from the entrance.

AB - Trout farms are one of the major sources of
pollution of highland streams and rivers, which are very
sensitive ecosystems otherwise scarcely influenced by
human activities. A trout farm with low annual production
was chosen for comparative monitoring of its effects
on the macrozoobenthos, epilithic diatom, and
potamoplankton communities in the receiving stream.
Research was conducted every 2 months during a period
of 1 year (one control point and three localities downstream from the farm). The fish farm discharge
induced moderate alteration of environmental factors
in the receiving watercourse, viz., significant increase
of the ionized and un-ionized ammonia fraction, dissolved
oxygen concentration, and biological oxygen
demand. Species richness and Simpson’s diversity index
did not change in any of the communities. Correspondent
analysis of potamoplankton community composition
clearly showed trout farm effects, thereby indicating
the need for reevaluation of saprobic valence values for
potamoplankton species. The complete lack of influence
of the trout farm discharge on the epilithic diatom community
is probably due to absence of significant changes
of phosphorus concentration in the receiving stream.
Effects of the trout farm on the macrozoobenthos community
were further characterized by 14 additional
indices. The percentages of Chironomidae larvae,
shredders, and total collectors; ratio of shredders to
collectors; and the family biotic index are suggested
as candidates for future multimetric index for measuring
of trout farm influence.

AB - The aim of this paper is to present the distribution of Decussata hexagona, a new species in diatom
flora of Serbia. Seventy-two diatom samples were collected from six localities along the Vrla and
Rasina Rivers during 2011 and 2012. Decussata hexagona was recorded with single specimens or
low relative abundance (0.3%) from epilithic communities in seven samples from the Vrla River
and in one sample from the Rasina River. It was recorded in unusual epilithic habitats of running
neutral to low-alkaline waters with low ion content.

AB - The isothermal kinetics of the release of the drug (E)-4-(4-metoxyphenyl)-4-oxo-2-butenoic acid (MEPBA) from poly(acrylic acid) hydrogel were studied. The isothermal kinetic curves of MEPBA release from the poly(acrylic acid) hydrogel in bidistilled water at different temperatures ranging from 22 °C to 42 °C were determined. The reaction rate constants of the investigated process were determined using the initial rate, saturation rate and power law. Also, to quickly determine the kinetic model of drug release, the so-called method of reduced time was applied. The influence of the degree of the MEPBA released (α) at the values of the kinetic parameters as well as the presence of a compensation effect was established. The procedure for determining the distribution function of activation energies was developed. This procedure was based on the experimentally determined relationship between the activation energy and the degree of drug released. The process of MEPBA release from PAA hydrogel, almost in entire range, can be described with the model of the drug desorption from the active centers with different specific energies.
