AB - Population variability of n-alkanes in the cuticular waxes of Serbian spruce needles from Bosnia and Herzegovina was investigated for the first time. n-Alkanes exhibited composition variability ranging from C18 to C35. The divergence of populations from Bosnia and Herzegovina and previously investigated Serbian populations was statistically confirmed by PCA, DA, and CA (Cluster analysis), which could support the fact that there are two possible spruce chemotypes: one relating to the Bosnian-Herzegovinian and the other to the Serbian populations. Climate parameters (precipitation, temperature, wind, and solar radiation) approved this conclusion.

AB - In this study we have reported the chemical composition of the essential oils obtained from the needles of twelve Pinus taxa, belonging to the subgenera Pinus (sections Pinus and Trifoliae) and Strobus (sect. Quinquefoliae). Monoterpenes dominated over sesquiterpenes in most of the investigated taxa of both subgenera, except in representatives of the subsection Pinaster, subgenus Pinus. α-Pinene was the most abundant terpene in eight pines, but other dominant terpenes were found in some taxa - trans-caryophyllene, germacrene D, abietadiene and β-pinene. In the subsect. Pinaster, the most dominant compounds varied from species to species. In addition, P. halepensis and P. pinaster had the highest percentage of diterpenes, while P. heldreichii was the richest in germacrene D. In the PCA and cluster analyses, three species from the subsect. Pinaster emerged as the most distant: P. halepensis, P. pinaster, and P. heldreichii. In addition, the possible taxonomic implications of the terpene profile in the analysed Pinus taxa were also discussed.
AB - U ovom proučavanju objavili smo hemijski sastav etarskih ulja dobijenih iz iglica 12 taksona roda Pinus, koji pripadaju podrodovima Pinus
(sekcije Pinus i Trifoliae) i Strobus (sekcija Quinquefoliae).
trans-kariofilen, germakren D, abietadien i β-pinen. U subcekciji Pinaster dominantne komponente variraju od vrste do vrste. Nadalje, P. halepensis
i P. pinaster imaju najveći procenat diterpena, dok je P. heldreichii najbogatiji u germakrenu D. U PCA i klaster analizama pokazale su
se najudaljenije tri vrste subsekcije Pinaster: P. halepensis, P. pinaster i P. heldreichii. Nadalje, u analiziranim vrstama roda Pinus diskutovane
su moguće taksonomske implikacije terpenskog profila.

AB - Diarylheptanoids are a group of secondary metabolites widely distributed in the Betulaceae family and characteristic for Alnus species. In this study, the chemotaxonomic power of diarylheptanoids, such as hirsutanonol-5-O-beta-d-glucopyranoside, rubranoside A, oregonin, platyphylloside, alnuside A and hirsutanonol, has been investigated in combination with principal component analysis (PCA) for differentiation of Alnus species. Concentrations of six diarylheptanoids in the bark extracts of two natural populations of Alnus glutinosa (black alder) and Alnus incana (gray alder) were determined by -ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). PCA clearly shows the separation of three groups. Populations I (A. glutinosa) and II (A. incana) both consisted of individuals of the corresponding species. Four individuals from both sampled populations formed a separate group (population III), which possibly represents a hybrid group. Accordingly, diarylheptanoids may serve in combination with PCA as chemotaxonomic markers at the species level, which may also reveal hybrid species.

AB - The reliability of diarylheptanoids as chemotaxonomic markers at inter-and intraspecific levels has been investigated. Six diarylheptanoids were quantified in bark ethanol extracts of four Alnus spp. populations by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The populations described here as locus classicus Alnus glutinosa (I) and locus classicus Alnus incana (III) are clearly differentiated. Compared to population I, individuals in population III have higher extract yields and hirsutanonol-5-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside content and lower contents of hirsutanonol, rubranoside A and oregonin. Individuals from neighboring populations of A. glutinosa (II) and A. incana (IV) share similar contents of hirsutanonol. All the studied populations exhibit a high intrapopulation variability of the selected diarylheptanoids; they have a heterogeneous chemotype and they partially overlap. The geographical proximity of populations II and IV increases their chemical similarity. Principal component analysis (PCA) clearly shows that the biggest dispersion of individuals lies within population IV. The reason for its heterogeneity might be its physical proximity to population II, i. e. the appearance of hybrids. Also, geometric morphometrics of leaves was performed as a screening criterion for spontaneous hybrids.

AB - This is the first report of population variability of the contents of n-alkanes and nonacosan-10-ol in the needle epicuticular waxes of Serbian spruce (Picea omorika). The hexane extracts of needle samples originated from three natural populations in Serbia (Vranjak, Zmajevaki potok, and Mileevka Canyon) were investigated by GC and GC/MS analyses. The amount of nonacosan-10-ol varied individually from 50.05 to 74.42% (65.74% in average), but the differences between the three investigated populations were not statistically confirmed. The results exhibited variability of the composition of n-alkanes in the epicuticular waxes with their size ranging from C18 to C35. The most abundant n-alkanes were C29, C31, and C27 (35.22, 13.77, and 12.28% in average, resp.). The carbon preference index of all the n-alkanes (CPItotal) of the P. omorika populations (average of populations IIII) ranged from 3.3 to 11.5 (mean of 5.9), while the average chain length (ACL) ranged from 26.6 to 29.2. The principal component and cluster analyses of the contents of nine n-alkanes showed the greatest difference for the population growing in the Mileevka Canyon. The obtained results were compared with previous literature data given for other Picea species, and this comparison was briefly discussed.

AB - This is the first report on population variability of nonacosan-10-ol and n-alkanes in needle epicuticular waxes of Macedonian pine (Pinus peuce Griseb.) Hexane extracts of needle samples, originating from two natural populations in Montenegro (Zeletin and Sjekirica) and from one population in Serbia (Mokra Gora) were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The amount of nonacosan-10-ol varied individually from 41.3 to 72.31% (average 55.9%), with the Sjekirica population being statistically divergent (64.4% on average). The results showed n-alkanes in epicuticular waxes ranging from C18 to C33. The most abundant alkanes were C29, C25, C27, and C23 (15.5, 11.1, 10.6, and 10.5% on average, resp.). The carbon preference index of Pinus peuce ranged from 1.0 to 4.3 (1.9 on average). Average chain length ranged from 18.4 to 27.7 (average 25.7). A high level of inidividual quantitative variation in all of these hydrocarbon parameters was also detected. These results were compared with published data on other species from the Pinus genus.

AB - This is the first report of individual variability and population diversity of the contents of nonacosan-10-ol and n-alkanes in the needle cuticular waxes of Bosnian pines originated from Montenegro, regarded as Pinus heldreichii var. leucodermis, and from Serbia, regarded as P. heldreichii var. pancici. The amount of nonacosan-10-ol varied individually from 27.4 to 73.2% (55.5% in average), but differences between the four investigated populations were not statistically confirmed. The size of the n-alkanes ranged from C18 to C33. The most abundant n-alkanes were C23, C27, and C25 (12.2, 11.2, and 10.8% in average, resp.). The carbon preference index (CPI) of the n-alkanes ranged from 0.8 to 3.1 (1.6 in average), while the average chain length (ACL) ranged from 20.9 to 26.5 (24.4 in average). Long-chain and mid-chain n-alkanes prevailed (49.6 and 37.9% in average, resp.). It was also found that the populations of P. heldreichii var. leucodermis had predominantly a narrower range of n-alkanes (C18?C31) than the trees of the variety pancici (C18?C33). Differences between the varieties were also significant for most of the other characteristics of the n-alkane pattern (e.g., most abundant n-alkanes, CPI, ACL, and relative proportion of short-, mid-, and long-chain n-alkanes). The principle component and cluster analyses of eleven n-alkanes confirmed the significant diversity of these two varieties.

AB - This is the first report of n-alkanes in needle epicuticular waxes of the variety Bosnian pine, Pinus heldreichii var. pančići. n-Hexane extracts of needle samples, originating from seven isolated localities in Serbia, were analysed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results evidenced n-alkanes ranging from C18 to C33 in epicuticular waxes. The most abundant alkanes were C27, C23, C25 and C29 (12.53 %, 12.46 %, 12.00 % and 10.38 % on average, respectively). The carbon preference index (CPItotal) of Pinus heldreichii var. pančići ranged from 1.1 to 2.1 (1.6 on average), while the average chain length (ACLtotal) ranged from 25.0 to 25.8 (25.3 on average). A high level of individual quantitative variation in all of these hydrocarbon parameters was also found. The obtained results were compared with the bibliographic references for Pinus heldreichii var. leucodermis and other species of the Pinus genus.
