AB  - Lignin depolymerization could be an important technique for the production of valuable aromatic compounds. The aim of this work was to investigate the degradation of kraft lignin by a mixed culture of fungi and to identify degradation products using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCxGC-MS).

Preparation of silver(I) complexes with itaconic acid-based hydrogels for biomedical application

AB  - Silver(I) complexes based on itaconic acid hydrogel were prepared and characterized in order to examine the potential use of these materials. FTIR, AFM, in vitro fluid-uptake, metal sorption, and antibacterial activity assay measurements were used for the characterization. Silver(I) ion uptake by hydrogels based on 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA), and different content of itaconic acid (2; 3.5; 5mol%) were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The coordination sites for metal ions were identified, and the stability in in-vitro condition was determined. Incorporation of silver(I) ions into hydrogels and the influence of these ions on material diffusion properties were analyzed. It was found that the itaconic acid moiety is the determining factor which influences metal ion binding and, therefore, fluid uptake inside the polymer network. Furthermore, obtained hydrogels showed a satisfactory antibacterial activity.

AB  - Polymerization in a system containing template (linear macromolecule) which interacts with the growing polymer (a "daughter polymer") and influence its structure is called template polymerization. The ordering in the growing chain is realized by interaction between complementary groups existing in the template and in the monomer, such as hydrogen bonds, ionic, electrostatic or hydrophobic interactions. The template can have a strong influence on the reaction kinetics, the characteristics of the "daughter polymer" and reactivity ratios in the case of copolymerization.
Template polymerization generally yields a stoichiometric interpolymer complex. The concept of template polymer is derived from natural processes such as the self-replication of DNA and biosynthesis of proteins. A natural polymer may be used as a template and natural-synthetic complex is obtained with the potential application as a biomaterial.
AB  - U ovom radu su proučavani kompleksi poli(itakonske kiseline) i poli(metakrilamida) koji se obrazuju preko vodoniočnih veza. Izvedena je matrična polimerizacija metakrilamida na poli(itakonskoj kiselini) (PIK) u vodi sa različitim početnim odnosom reaktanata. Kompleksi su karakterisani FTIR spektroskopijom i termijskom analizom.
