AB - A novel porous gold polymer composite was prepared by the functionalization of a glycidyl methacrylate-based copolymer (pGME) with ethylene diamine (pGME-en), and activation by gold (pGME-en/Au), in a simple batch adsorption procedure in an acid solution, at room temperature. Detailed characterization of the pGME-en before and after activation was performed. The main focuses of this research were the design of a method that can enable the recovery of gold and the reuse of this multipurpose sorbent as an antimicrobial agent. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis pointed out amine groups as the primary binding sites for Au activation, while hydroxyl groups also contributed to the chelation reaction. pGME-en exhibited fast gold adsorption with an adsorption half-time of 5 min and an equilibrium time of 30 min. The maximal adsorption capacity was about 187 mg/g. The analysis of sorption experimental data with a non-linear surface reaction and diffusion-based kinetic models revealed the pseudo-second-order and Avrami model as the best fit, with unambiguous control by liquid film and intra-particle diffusion. The biological activity studies against Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans revealed moderate activity of pGME-en/Au against different bacterial and fungal species. pGME-en/Au was stable in a saline solution, with a release of approximately 2.3 mg/g after 24 h.

AB - The presented study describes macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) [PGME] functionalized with diethylenetriamine [PGME-deta] as a potential recovery agent for Mo(VI) oxyanions from aqueous solutions. Sorption studies were carried out by varying experimental conditions (pH, time, concentration, temperature). Kinetics of Mo(VI) sorption was investigated in batch (static) experiments, in the temperature range 298-343K. Sorption dynamics data were fitted to seven chemical-reaction and particle-diffusion models. The kinetics studies showed that Mo(VI) sorption adhered to the pseudo-second-order model under all investigated operating conditions. The sorption kinetics was determined to be governed by both the intraparticle diffusion and the external film diffusion to a lesser extent. The temperature rise promotes the molybdate species removal, with the maximum experimental uptake capacity of 4.02mmolg- 1 at 298K, at the selected pH which is consistent with the predominance range of hydrolized polynuclear Mo(VI) forms and optimum electrostatic attraction.

AB - The adsorption properties of two zeolite types, faujasite (NaY, ZnY, CoY) and LTA-4A zeolite (NaA, ZnA, CoA), towards technetium were studied in batch static experiments. The Si/Al ratio, acidity, dealumination, chargebalance cations of zeolite, contact time and temperature determined the adsorption efficiency. The maximum removal efficiency of 98.8% and K (d) value (2.06 x 10(-4) cm(3) g(-1)) was achieved using CoY (zeolite type Y). The kinetics of technetium adsorption followed the pseudo-second order model. The TcO2 adsorption is mainly due to the hydrogen bonds between protons of the zeolitic structural OH groups (Bronsted acid center) and oxygen from the TcO2 (-).

AB - In this study, macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) was synthesized by suspension copolymerization, functionalized by ring-opening reaction of the pendant epoxy groups with diethylene triamine and used for immobilization of Pd(II) ions from chloride and nitrate solutions under batch experimental condition. The amino-functionalized sample and samples with immobilized Pd(II) ions were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis and scanning energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). The electrochemical behavior of electrodes composed of synthesized samples was tested in 0.1 M H2SO4 by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV). The shape of recorded CV showed dependence on the type of Pd-salt used for Pd immobilization. The reaction of oxidation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) from 0.1 M H2SO4 at investigated samples was also studied. Electrooxidation of 4-CP resulted in passivation and formation of reversible hydroquinone/benzoquinone on both investigated electrodes, although hydroquinone/benzoquinone formation was more pronounced on Pd immobilized from nitrite solution.

AB - A novel magnetic macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (mPGME) was prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylenetriamine (mPGME-deta). The samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and SQUID magnetometry. The sorption behavior of mPGME-deta toward pertechnetate ions (TcO4-) from aqueous solution was studied. Experimental results indicated relatively fast TcO4- sorption kinetics that depends on pH and ionic strength, with a high removal efficiency of 99% within 180 min in the pH range 3.0-5.0. The pseudo-second-order model yielded the best fit for the kinetic data.

AB - Synthesis of an unconventional resin based on 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) and its Cu(II) sorption behavior were studied. Three samples of macroporous crosslinked poly(4-vinylpyridine-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (P4VPE) with different porosity parameters were prepared by suspension copolymerization by varying the n-heptane amount in the inert component. The samples were characterized by mercury porosimetry, elemental analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The sorption of P4VPE for Cu(II) ions, determined under non-competitive conditions, was relatively rapid, i.e., the maximum capacity was reached within 30 min. The maximum experimental sorption capacity for the sample with the highest values of pore diameter and specific pore volume (sample 3, Q(eq) = 89 mg g(-1)) was 17.5 times higher than for the sample with the lowest values of pore diameter and specific pore volume (sample 1, Q(eq) = 5.1 mg g(-1)). Since the values for pyridine content in all P4VPE samples were almost the same, it was concluded that the porosity parameters have predominant influence on Cu(II) sorption rates on P4VPE. The sorption behavior and the rate-controlling mechanisms were analyzed using six kinetic models (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Elovich, intraparticle diffusion, Bangham and Boyd models). XPS study clarified the nature of the formed P4VPE-Cu(II) species.

dimethacrylate (EGDMA) copolymer [PGME] and three composite samples with
alumina (PGME/alumina) were synthesized by radical copolymerization in a cast
and functionalized by reaction of diethylene triamine (deta) with epoxy groups in
GMA. All the samples were characterized using FTIR-ATR spectroscopy, SEM,
AFM, solid state NMR, thermogravimetry and mercury porosimetry. Additionally,
amino functionalized PGME/alumina with the highest alumina content
(PGME/alumina50-deta) was loaded with chromium [Cr(VI)] ions. Kinetics of Cr
(VI) sorption was investigated in batch static experiments, at 298 K and pH = 2, for
various initial concentrations (Ci = 0.5, 1.5 and 2.5 mM) and analyzed using three
kinetic models. Cr(VI) sorption by PGME/alumina50-deta obeys the PSO kinetic
model, while IPD model suggests some degree of intraparticle pore diffusion control.

AB - Novel macroporous functionalized copolymers with different cross-linker concentrations and porosity parameters were synthesized by reaction of the pendant epoxy groups of poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)) with hexamethylene diamine 1,3-bis(3-aminopropyl)tetramethyldisiloxane, and alpha,omega-diaminopropyl poly(dimethylsiloxane). The copolymers were prepared in forms, of spherical beads and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR); C-13 and Si-29 solid-state NMR, mercury porosimetry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Copolymers prepared with the higher cross-linker concentrations have better thermal stability, higher glass transition temperatures; higher specific surface areas, and smaller pore diameters that correspond to half Of the pore volumes. Out results show that functionalization significantly changed porosity parameters, mechanism of thermal degradation; and increased thermal, stability in comparison with the initial copolymers. These macroporous copolymers could potentially have many applications, i.e. for sorption of heavy and precious metals or as Material for gas chromatography columns.

AB - In this paper, macroporous glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate copolymer functionalized with diethylene triamine (PGME-deta), was evaluated as Reactive Black 5 (RB5) sorbent. Batch RB5 removal from aqueous solution by PGME-deta was investigated by varying pH, contact time, sorbent dosage, initial dye concentration and temperature. The sorption is pH sensitive having maximum at pH 2 (dye removal of 85%), decreasing with the increase of pH (dye removal of 24% at pH 11) after 60 min. Sorption kinetics was fitted to chemical-reaction and particle-diffusion models (pseudo-first-, pseudo-second-order, intraparticle diffusion and Mckay models). The pseudo-second-order kinetic model accurately predicted the RB5 amount sorbed under all investigated operating conditions, while the intraparticle diffusion was the dominant rate-limiting mechanism. The diffusion mechanism was more prevalent with the decrease in temperature and the increase in concentration. The isotherm data was best fitted with the Langmuir model, indicating homogeneous distribution of active sites on PGME-deta and monolayer sorption, with the maximum sorption capacity of 353 mg g-1. The calculated sorption rates improved with increasing temperature and an activation energy close to 40 kJ mol-1 was determined, suggesting that chemisorption was also rate-controlling.

AB - Inverse gas chromatography at infinite dilution was applied to determine the thermodynamic interactions of poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) and the composite of biphasic calcium phosphate and PLLA (BCP/PLLA). The specific retention volumes, , of 11 organic compounds of different chemical nature and polarity (non-polar, donor or acceptor) were determined in the temperature range of 308-378 K for PLLA and 308-398 K for BCP/PLLA. The weight fraction activity coefficients of test sorbates, , and the Flory-Huggins interaction parameters, , were estimated and discussed in terms of interactions of the sorbates with PLLA and BCP/PLLA. Also, the partial molar free energy, , the partial molar heat of mixing, , the sorption molar free energy, , the sorption enthalpy, , and the sorption entropy, , were analyzed. A different chromatographic behavior of the two investigated samples, PLLA and BCP/PLLA, was observed. The values of indicated n-alkanes, diethyl ether, tetrahydrofurane (THF), cyclohexane, benzene, dioxane (except for 338 K), and ethyl acetate (EtAc) (except for 338 K) as non-solvents, and chloroform (CHCl3) as good solvent (except for 378 K) for PLLA. For BCP/PLLA, CHCl3, EtAc (for 378 K), dioxane (except for 378 K), and THF were indicated as good solvents.

AB - (99)Technetium is one of the largest components of nuclear waste material. In aqueous solutions Tc-99 is present as the pertechnetate oxoanion, (TcO4-)-Tc-99, which is highly soluble and mobile in groundwater under oxidizing conditions, thus posing a major environmental concern. In this study, a series of organo-modified bentonite clay samples was tested as adsorbents for the removal of radioactive (TcO4-)-Tc-99 from aqueous solution at room temperature. The influence of the hexadecyl trimethylammonium (HDTMA)/bentonite ratio on the adsorption ability of the organobentonites was investigated. It was found that the adsorbent in which the exchangeable cations were only partially substituted with HDTMA showed very low affinity toward pertechnetate. On the other hand, the adsorbents in which the HDTMA loading exceeded the cation exchange capacity (CEC) value had high efficiency. The behavior of such adsorbents was best described by a Freundlich isotherm, while for the sample in which the HDTMA loading was equal to the CEC, the linear adsorption isotherm was the most appropriate. The difference in adsorption performance of several adsorbents was discussed from the point of view of the interlayer arrangement of the HDTMA. The kinetics of pertechnetate adsorption on HDTMA-bentonites was tested and analyzed using different surface reaction- and diffusion-based kinetic models. For all the investigated adsorbents, the most appropriate kinetic model was the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. The obtained adsorption capacities were and HDTMA-bentonites with HDTMA loadings exceeding CEC value should be regarded as very promising adsorbents for the remediation of Tc-99 polluted waters.

AB - Novel functionalized macroporous copolymers were synthesized by reaction of the
pendant epoxy groups of poly(glycidyl methacrylate)-co-poly(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)s with 1,3-bis(3-aminopropyl)tetramethyldisiloxane (TMDS) and α,ω-diamino
propyl poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). It was found that the optimal conditions for the
synthesis of functionalized copolymers were: reaction temperature of 80 o
C, reaction time
of 10 h and a mixture of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone/toluene (1/3 v/v) as the solvent. The
effects of the type of siloxanes and concentration of glycidyl methacrylate on the structure
and properties of functionalized copolymers were investigated by solid-state 13C and 29Si
NMR spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The structure of
functionalized copolymers was confirmed by solid-state NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. The
DSC results showed that the glass transition temperatures of copolymers were in the
range from 63 to 65 o
C and they slightly depend on the copolymer composition
exclusively. The thermal stability was better for copolymers functionalized with TMDS in
comparison with PDMS based copolymers. Thermal degradation of the synthesized
copolymers starts between 276 and 290 o
C. The TG curves of all copolymers display two
stages of degradation at 308-368 o
C (stage 1) and 395-430 o
C (stage 2) which are associated with the ester and siloxane bonds. The results indicated that the thermal stability
depends on the type of siloxanes and copolymer composition. The surface and crosssection morphology was investigated by SEM and the porous copolymer beads were
confirmed by SEM analysis. SEM studies with energy dispersive X-ray mapping revealed
that siloxanes migrate to the surface of samples due to their low surface energy. By
varying the structure of siloxanes and copolymer composition, functionalized copolymers
can be designed and synthesized with diverse physical properties for different purposes.

AB - Pine cones of European Black pine are utilized as a precursor for obtaining powdered activated carbon. The concentrated phosphoric acid was used as an activating agent. A detailed study of the imidacloprid adsorption onto the obtained material was conducted. In this paper, the adsorption kinetics, the conditions of establishing equilibrium, the impact of the adsorbent mass, and pH of solutions was analyzed. It was concluded that in a short period 90 % of pesticide is removed from model solutions under the applied conditions, while the removal degree is even higher for lower initial concentrations and higher adsorbent masses. It was also elucidated that this pesticide is equally well adsorbed in both acid and basic solutions.

AB - Crosslinked macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) and
copolymer nanocomposite with acid modified bentonite clay were prepared by radical suspension
copolymerization and functionalized with diethylene triamine. Both samples were characterized by
elemental and textural analysis (mercury intrusion porosimetry). The incorporation of the acid
modified clay into the copolymer matrix lead to the increase of porosity, total pore volume and
particularly specific surface area, while the process only slightly altered the acid–base properties.
The obtained amino-functionalized nanocomposite was tested as 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) sorbent. The
influence of pH, sorption time and initial 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) concentration on sorption efficiency
of synthesized samples was studied. Since the pHPZC of the functionalized copolymer and the
functionalized composite was the same, and the amount of amino groups was slightly higher for the
copolymer, the enhanced sorption properties can be ascribed to improved textural properties of
composite, particularly the increased specific surface area. The isotherm data were best fitted with
Langmuir model, while the sorption dynamics obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The
results in this study show great potential for designing functionalized macroporous glycidyl
methacrylate copolymers and their acid modified bentonite composites as promising sorbents in 4-
nitrophenol removal from wastewaters.

AB - Two porous and one non-porous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) [abbreviated PGME] were prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylene triamine [abbreviated PGME-deta]. Samples were characterized by elemental analysis, mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Kinetics of Cr(VI) sorption by PGME-deta were investigated in batch static experiments, in the temperature range 25-70 degrees C. Sorption was rapid, with the uptake capacity higher than 80% after 30 min. Sorption behavior and rate-controlling mechanisms were analyzed using five kinetic models (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Elovich, intraparticle diffusion and Bangham model). Kinetic studies showed that Cr(VI) adsorption adhered to the pseudo-second-order model, with definite influence of pore diffusion. Equilibrium data was tested with Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin adsorption isotherm models. Langmuir model was the most suitable indicating homogeneous distribution of active sites on PGME-deta and monolayer sorption. The maximum adsorption capacity from the Langmuir model, Q(max),at pH 1.8 and 25 degrees C was 143 mg g(-1) for PGME2-deta (sample with the highest amino group concentration) while at 70 degrees C Q(max) reached the high value of 198 mg g(-1). Thermodynamic parameters revealed spontaneous and endothermic nature of Cr(VI) adsorption onto PGME-deta.

AB - Commercial macroporous poly(4-vinylpyridine-co-divinylbenzene) [P4VPD], known as Reillex-425, was characterized by mercury porosimetry, nitrogen physisorption, Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Sorption rates of P4VPD for Cu(II), Co(II) and Cr(VI) ions were determined in static non-competitive experiments, at room temperature (298 K). Rapid sorption was observed, especially for Co(II), with half time, t1/2, of 1.5 min and high experimental maximal capacity, Qmax, of 3.08 mmol g-1. Four kinetic models (pseudo-first and pseudo-second order model, intraparticle diffusion and Boyd model) were used for analyzing metal sorption by P4VPD. Metal ions sorption is well represented by the pseudo-second-order model, with definite influence of pore and film diffusion on sorption rates.
Prilikom analiziranja sorpcije ispitivanih metala pomoću P4VPD korišćena su četiri kinetička modela (model pseudo-prvog i pseudo-drugog reda, model difuzije unutar čestica i Bojdov model).

Prilikom analiziranja sorpcije ispitivanih metala pomoću P4VPD korišćena su četiri kinetička modela (model pseudo-prvog i pseudo-drugog reda, model difuzije unutar čestica i Bojdov model).

AB - The possibility of sorption of technetium-99 in the form of pertechnetate anion (TcO(4)(-)) and the sorption kinetics for removing TcO(4)(-) from aqueous solution by chelating polymers based on glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) were investigated. Two samples of macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (PGME), with different amount of the crosslinker (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, EGDMA), were synthesized by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylene triamine (deta). We propose that nonspecific sorption of pertechnetate anion via electrostatic interactions takes place at the protonated amino groups of macroporous crosslinked copolymer. The results of batch experiments per-formed at pH 1-14 showed fast sorption kinetics for removing TcO(4)(-) by amino-functionalized PGME-deta in a wide range of pH, that is, from 1.0 to 9.0. Almost complete removal of TcO(4)(-) (91-98%) was reached within 180 min in the stated pH range (1.0-9.0), with the sorption half-times of under 25 min. The partitioning coefficients of linear adsorption isotherms, with 180-min equilibrium time, reach the high values of 2130 mL g(-1) and 1698 mL g(-1) for the two samples of synthesized PGME-deta.

AB - Technetium-99 comprises a significant health risk, since edible plants can bioaccumulate and convert it to more lipophilic species that cannot be excreted through urine. Batch kinetics of pertechnetate removal from aqueous solutions by two samples of crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) functionalized with diethylene triamine (PGME-deta) was investigated at the optimum pH value of 3.0, and the initial solution activity of 325 MBq dm(-3). PGME-deta was characterized by elemental analysis, mercury intrusion porosimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. Five kinetic models (pseudo-first, pseudo-second order, Elovich, Bangham, and intraparticle diffusion) were used to determine the best-fit equation for pertechnetate sorption. After 24 h, PGME-deta samples sorbed more than 98% of pertechnetate present, with maximum sorption capacity of 25.5 MBq g(-1), showing good potential for remediation of slightly contaminated groundwater.

AB - Untreated textile wastewaters often contain a great diversity of organic and inorganic pollutants (including non-biodegradable substances like dyes, additives, as well as heavy metal cations like Cu2+, Cd2+, Zn 2+, Pb 2+, and Ni2+). Finding a multipurpose adsorbent for both inorganic and organic pollutants is a great challenge. It was shown that organobentonites modified with tetraalkylammonium ions in amounts corresponding to cation exchange capacity (CEC) can be applied in such purposes. In this study organobentonite obtained using domestic bentonite from mine Bogovina and hexadecyltrimethylammonium cation in amount corresponding to CEC of this clay was tested as a multifunctional adsorbent. As a test model of wastewater the six component solution was used. The solution was prepared from three selected textile azo dyes: Acid Orange 10 (AO 10), Acid Yellow 99 (AY 99) and Reactive Black 5 (RB 5) as well as three toxic metals: Pb2+, Ni2+ and Cd2+. Initial concentration of each pollutant was 50 mg dm-3. Dye concentration monitoring was performed by UV-VIS spectroscopy.

AB - Two porous samples and one non-porous sample of crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) [abbreviated PGME] were synthesized by suspension copolymerization and functionalized by ring-opening reaction of the pendant epoxy groups with diethylene triamine (deta). Initial PGME, as well as amino-functionalized samples, were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microsopy and elemental analysis. The kinetics of Cr(VI) sorption by amino-functionalized PGME was investigated in batch experiments under non-competitive conditions. It was found that the porosity of PGME-deta samples plays an important role in Cr(VI) uptake. Cr(VI) sorption by macroporous amino-functionalized samples was rapid, with the uptake capacity higher than 80% after 30 minutes. Two kinetic models (the pseudo-first and the pseudo-second order) were used to determine the best-fit equation for chromium(VI) sorption by PGME-deta.
