AB - TiO2 and CeO2 are well known as oxygen sensing materials. Despite high sensitivity, the actual utilization of these materials in gas detection remains limited. Research conducted over the last two decades has revealed synergistic effects of TiO2-CeO2 mixed oxides that have the potential to improve some aspects of oxygen monitoring. However, there are no studies on the sensing properties of the TiO2-CeO2 obtained by mechanochemical treatment. We have tested the applicability of the mechanochemically treated TiO2-CeO2 for oxygen detection and presented the results in this study. The sensing layers are prepared as a porous structure by screen printing a thick film on a commercial substrate. The obtained structures were exposed to various O2 concentrations. The results of electrical measurements showed that TiO2-CeO2 films have a significantly lower resistance than pure oxide films. Mixtures of composition TiO2:CeO2 = 0.8:0.2, ground for 100 min, have the lowest electrical resistance among the tested materials. Mixtures of composition TiO2:CeO2 = 0.5:0.5 and ground for 100 min proved to be the most sensitive. The operating temperature can be as low as 320 °C, which places this sensor in the class of semiconductor sensors working at relatively lower temperatures.

AB - The effect of selected transition metals (Mn, Ni, Co) modified TiO2 coatings formed by plasma electrolytic oxidation of titanium on their surface morphology, phase and chemical composition, optical absorption, and photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) was investigated. Coatings were formed in an alkaline electrolyte with varying concentrations of MnO, NiO, or Co3O4 powders. The morphology, thickness and phase structure of all formed coatings are nearly identical and independent of the content of transition metal ions embedded in TiO2. The X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicated that anatase TiO2 coatings were loaded with MnO, NiO, or Co3O4 from electrolytes. When up to 2.0 g/L of MnO, NiO, or Co3O4 is added to the electrolyte, the photocatalytic activity (PA) of the forming coatings is higher than for pure TiO2. The coatings formed in electrolyte with the addition of 0.75 g/L MnO, 1.5 g/L NiO, or 2.0 g/L Co3O4 had the highest PA. Increased PA is associated with a decrease in photogenerated electron/hole recombination rate, according to UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photoluminescence measurements.

AB - TiO2 coatings modified by Bi2O3 particles were successfully formed by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process of titanium in supporting electrolyte (10 g/L Na3PO4·10H2O) with the addition of Bi2O3 particles. The morphology, crystal structure, chemical composition, and optical properties of formed PEO coatings were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and photoluminescent techniques. The photodegradation of methyl orange under simulated sunlight condition was used to determine the potential of TiO2/Bi2O3 coatings in photocatalysis. The photocatalytic activity (PA) of TiO2/Bi2O3 coatings is higher than that of pure TiO2. PA of TiO2/Bi2O3 coatings is highly dependent on the amount of Bi2O3 particles in the supporting electrolyte and the highest PA was observed for TiO2/Bi2O3 coating formed in supporting electrolyte with the addition of 1.2 g/L of Bi2O3 particles. Enhanced PA is related to the reduction of photo-generated electron/hole recombination rate as a result of TiO2 and Bi2O3 coupling.

AB - In this investigation, the possibility of wood waste (hardwoods such as oaks' and alternatives' staves from Balkan cooperage) revalorization for simultaneous cadmium removal and wastewater disinfection was examined. All samples were characterized in terms of their crystallinity index and crystallite size, amount of functional groups, and surface chemistry (determined by ATR-FTIR) as well as antibacterial activity. Mulberry is characterized by the lowest crystallinity index which can be ascribed to the highest crystallite size disabling crystallite denser packaging, while myrobalan plum has about 23% lower crystallite size that enables crystallite better packaging, thus resulting in a 42.4% higher crystallinity index compared to the mulberry. All oaks have a significantly higher amount of carboxyl groups compared to the alternatives (0.23-0.28 vs. 0.12-0.19 mmol/g). The adsorption experiments revealed that with increasing the initial cadmium concentration from 15 up to 55 mg/g, samples' adsorption capacity increases by 89-220%. The equilibrium data fit well with the Langmuir isotherm model implying monolayer coverage of cadmium ions over a homogeneous wood surface. The relationship between the samples' maximum adsorption capacities (ranged from 5.726 to 12.618 mg/g), their crystallinity index, and crystallite size was established. According to ATR-FTIR spectra, aldehyde, carboxyl, hydroxyl, and phenyl groups present on the wood waste surface are involved in Cd2+ adsorption which proceeds via the interplay of the complexation, cation-π interactions, and ion-exchange mechanisms. Mulberry and myrobalan plum showed about 89% and 80% of the total uptake capacity of cadmium within 60 min, while the equilibrium was attained after 240 min of contact time. Good compliance with pseudo-second kinetic order indicated that cadmium adsorption was mediated by chemical forces. Thermodynamic parameters revealed the spontaneous and exothermic character of cadmium ion adsorption onto mulberry and myrobalan plum. All studied samples provide maximum bacterial reduction (>99%) for E. coli and S. aureus. Wood waste from Balkan cooperage can be successfully used for simultaneous cadmium removal and wastewater disinfection.

AB - Dye Sensitized Solar cells (DSSC) are very attractive due to their low cost fabricating methods and used materials. One of the most important parts of the cells is the photoanode. Many semiconducting materials are used for this purpose, but most common one is titanium dioxide (TiO2). Optimal sintering temperature of anode plays important role in performance of TiO2 layer in DSSC, since it provides good electrical contact between particles, which consequently leads to better electron transfer through the cell, but still restricts unfavorable phase transformation. In this paper two identical cells with natural pigment hypericin as sensitizer were assembled with anodes sintered on two different temperatures (500 °C and 600 °C), so their performance parameters could be compared. The ratios between the maximal power densities (Pmax) and solar to electrical energy conversion efficiencies (η) for the two measured cells are 5 times in favor for the cell sintered at 600 °C, which shows the importance of temperature treatment of TiO2 electrodes for better performance of solar cells.

abstract = "Dye Sensitized Solar cells (DSSC) are very attractive due to their low cost fabricating methods and used materials. AB - This paper presents a new method for improvement of ultraviolet light driven photocatalytic activity of ZnO by immobilizing ZnO particles into Al2O3:Ce3+ coatings which emit intense radiation in the near ultraviolet region when excited by middle ultraviolet radiation. When Al2O3:Ce3+/ZnO coatings are illuminated by ultraviolet light in photocatalytic reactor, emitted ultraviolet radiation originating from Ce3+ ions synergistically participates in photocatalytic reactions on ZnO. Al2O3:Ce3+/ZnO coatings were formed by plasma electrolytic oxidation of
aluminum in electrolyte containing 2 g/L of ZnO particles and up to 8 g/L of CeO2 particles. Structural, optical, photoluminescent, and photocatalytic properties of formed surface coatings were examined. All formed coatings feature virtually the same thickness, morphology, phase composition, and absorption properties. Concentration of incorporated Ce3+ ions into Al2O3 host and concentration of immobilized ZnO particles are the only parameters by which the coatings differ from each other resulting in difference in photocatalytic activity. Al2O3:Ce3+/ZnO coatings show better photodegradation of methyl orange with respect to Al2O3/ZnO coatings. The best photocatalytic activity is observed for the coating formed in electrolyte containing 4 g/L of CeO2 particles.

AB - The spray pyrolysis is fast and simple method for deposition of CeO2 – rutile TiO2 coatings on stainless steel substrate. The coatings were deposited on stainless steel substrate and characterized by XRD, AFM, XPS, Raman, DRS and photoactivity test for methyl orange decolorization. Photoactivity of CeO2 – rutile TiO2 coatings increase with increasing CeO2 content up to 5 wt% and further increase of CeO2 content leads to decrease of photoactivity. Improvements of photoactivity originate from close contact between CeO2 and rutile TiO2 particles which create numerous centers able to produce very reactive radical species. Besides, the close contact between the CeO2 and rutile TiO2 provides easier charge transfer facilitating the formation of electron/hole pairs that is a necessary step in the overall photocatalytic process.

AB - Iron manganite (FeMnO3) powder with a cubic (bixbyite,
−
Ia3) crystal structure was obtained by a solid state
reaction. Thick film paste (powder+organic vehicles) was screen printed on alumina substrate with test interdigitated
PdAg electrodes. Significant porosity (60.6%) composed of macropores (larger than 100 nm) was
determined by Hg porosimetry, changing only slightly from the first extrusion run indicating a stable pore
system. Hg porosimetry evaluation of thick film samples enabled estimation of true textural parameters of the
thick film compared to powder. Impedance response of the thick film sensor was monitored in a humidity
chamber in the relative humidity (RH) range 30–90%, at room temperature (25 °C) and frequency range from
42 Hz to 1 MHz. At 100 Hz the impedance reduced from 10.41 MΩ for RH 30% to 0.68 MΩ for RH 90%. Analysis
of complex impedance using an equivalent circuit showed the dominant influence of grain boundaries. The
sensor response and recovery was fast (several seconds) and a relatively low hysteresis value of 2.8% was
obtained.

AB - Nanocrystalline iron manganite powder was synthesized using the sol–gel combustion process, with
glycine as fuel. It was further calcined at 900 C for 8 h, resulting in the formation of a loose cubic
FeMnO3 powder with a small specific surface area, net-like structure and plate-like particles as
confirmed by XRD, N2 physisorption, FESEM and TEM analyses. The metal ion release was studied by
ICP-OES and showed that less than 10 ppb of Fe or Mn ions were released by leaching in water, but
0.36 ppm Fe and 3.69 ppm Mn was found in LB (Luria–Bertani) bacterial medium. The generation of
reactive oxygen species (ROS) was monitored in distilled water and bacterial medium and showed that
FeMnO3 particles do not generate O2c
ions with or without UV irradiation, but synthesize H2O2 and
show an antioxidative effect. Besides the higher stability of FeMnO3 particles in aqueous solution they
showed an inhibitory effect on Bacillus subtilis growth in LB medium even at low concentrations
(0.01 mg ml 1), but not in BHI medium even at 1 mg ml 1. This study points out that the mechanism of
antibacterial action of engineered metal oxides needs continued investigation and specific experimental
controls

AB - Zinc ferrite nanocrystalline powder was obtained by solid state synthesis of starting zinc oxide and hematite nanopowders. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the formation of nanocrystalline zinc‐ferrite powder with a mixed spinel structure with small amounts of remaining zinc oxide and hematite as impurities. Thick film paste was formed and screen printed on test interdigitated PdAg electrodes on alumina substrate. Formation of a porous nanocrystalline structure was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Hg porosimetry. Humidity sensing properties of zinc ferrite thick films were investigated by monitoring the change in impedance in the relative humidity interval 30‐90% in the frequency range 42 Hz – 1 MHz at room temperature (25 °C) and 50 °C. At 42 Hz at both analyzed temperatures the impedance reduced ~ 46 times in the humidity range 30‐90%. The dominant influence of grain boundaries was confirmed by analysis of complex impedance with an equivalent circuit.

AB - Tb doped TiO2 coatings are formed by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) of titanium in water solution of 10 g/L Na3PO4.12H(2)O with addition of Tb4O7 powder. Surface morphology, chemical, and phase composition of obtained PEO coatings are investigated utilizing scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Uniformly distributed Ti, O, P, and Tb are identified as the main constituents of the coatings. Diffraction patterns of obtained coatings show well pronounced reflections inherent to anatase phase of TiO2. Performed photoluminescence measurements indicate that incorporated Tb is in trivalent oxidation state. Photoluminescence emission spectra feature two overlapping regions: the first region is related to band of TiO2 host and the second region which features several emission bands is ascribed to f-f transitions of Tb3+ from excited level D-5(4) to lower levels F-7(J) (J = 3,4,5, and 6). The photocatalytic activity (PA) of Tb3+ doped TiO2 coatings is probed by measuring the photodegradation of methyl orange under simulated sunlight conditions, suggesting that the main factor affecting PA is concentration of Tb3+ ions incorporated into coatings. Tb3+ doped TiO2 coatings formed for short time have better PA than pure TiO2 coatings formed under the same conditions; the highest PA is observed for the coating formed after 1 min of PEO process. Presence of Tb3+ ions into TiO2 coatings in small concentration improves PA through effective suppression of electron/hole recombination.

AB - This paper presents the results of our recent investigation focused on the preparation and possible photocatalytic application of iron doped TiO2 coatings formed by plasma electrolytic oxidation of high purity titanium in electrolyte containing FeSO4. The morphology, phase and elemental composition, and absorption band of the coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity of coatings was evaluated by measuring the degradation of methyl orange under simulated sunlight conditions. It was found that the addition of iron precursor to electrolyte solution improves the photocatalytic properties of obtained coatings with respect to pure TiO2 coating. The incorporation of iron in TiO2 lattice was identified as the main factor affecting the increase of photocatalytic activity. The highest photocatalytic activity was observed when coatings were processed for 2 min with addition of 1 g/L FeSO4 to electrolyte.

AB - CdS particles modified anatase TiO2 photocatalysts were formed on titanium substrate by plasma electrolytic oxidation for 2 min in supporting electrolyte (10 g/L Na-3 center dot PO4 center dot 12H(2)O) with addition of CdS particles in concentrations up to 8 g/L. Content of CdS particles incorporated into TiO2 coatings depends of CdS particles concentration in supporting electrolyte, while surface morphology, phase structure and absorption properties of formed coatings were not significantly influenced by the addition of CdS particles. In contrast to pure TiO2 coatings, TiO2/CdS coatings exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activity (PA) in the degradation of methyl orange, used as a model organic pollutant, under simulated solar irradiation. The highest PA was observed for TiO2/CdS coating formed in supporting electrolyte with addition of 0.4 g/L of CdS particles. Photoluminescence measurements indicate that enhanced PA is related to the reduction of the recombination rate of photogenerated electron/hole pairs as a result of TiO2 and CdS coupling.

AB - TiO2/SnO2 coatings are formed by plasma electrolytic oxidation of titanium substrate in supporting electrolyte (10 g/L Na3PO4 center dot 12H(2)O) with addition of various concentrations of SnO2 particles. Photocatalytic activity (PA) of TiO2/SnO2 coatings was evaluated by measuring the degradation of methyl orange under simulated sunlight conditions. It was observed that PA of TiO2/SnO2 coatings strongly depends on the concentration of SnO2 particles in the electrolyte, i. e., the highest PA was observed with addition of 0.3 g/L of SnO2 particles to supporting electrolyte.

AB - This paper presents the results of our recent investigation of MgO/ZnO coatings formed on AZ31 magnesium alloy by plasma electrolytic oxidation in phosphate-based alkaline electrolyte with varying concentration of ZnO particles. Surface morphology of obtained coatings is not significantly influenced by the addition of ZnO particles to the supporting electrolyte, while processing time has considerable influence on the morphology of formed coatings. Elemental mapping showed that elements are distributed rather uniformly across the obtained oxide coatings. The content of Zn increases with ZnO particle concentration in the supporting electrolyte as well as with PEO processing time. Incorporation of ZnO particles in obtained coatings was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Photoluminescent emission spectra of MgO/ZnO coatings featured sharp band centered at about 380 nm and broad band centered at about 535 nm, with the leading contribution coming from ZnO deposited on the surface. Diffuse reflectance spectra revealed that absorption edge of MgO/ZnO coatings is positioned at about 385 nm. Photoactivity of obtained coatings increases with processing time and ZnO concentration up to 6 g/L.

AB - Tungsten doped Al2O3 /ZnO coatings are formed by plasma electrolytic oxidation of aluminum substrate in supporting electrolyte (0.1 M boric acid + 0.05 M borax + 2 g/L ZnO) with addition of different concentrations of Na2WO4 center dot 2H(2)O. The morphology, crystal structure, chemical composition, and light absorption characteristics of formed surface coatings are investigated. The X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicate that formed surface coatings consist of alpha and gamma phase of A(2)O(3), ZnO, metallic tungsten and WO3. Obtained results showed that incorporated tungsten does not have any influence on the absorption spectra of Al2O3/ZnO coatings, which showed invariable band edge at about 385 nm. The photocatalytic activity of undoped and tungsten doped Al2O3 /ZnO coatings is estimated by the photodegradation of methyl orange. The photocatalytic activity of tungsten doped A(2)O(3)/ZnO coatings is higher thanof undoped Al2O3 /ZnO coatings; the best photocatalytic activity is ascribed to coatings formed in supporting electrolyte with addition of 0.3 g/L Na2WO4 center dot 2H(2)O. Tungsten in A(2)O(3)/ZnO coatings acts as a charge trap, thus reducing the recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The results of PL measurements are in agreement with photocatalytic activity. Declining PL intensity corresponds to increasing photocatalytic activity of the coatings, indicating slower recombination of electron-hole pairs.

AB - Mixed Al2O3/ZnO coatings are prepared by conventional DC plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) of aluminum in boric acid and borax solution containing ZnO nanoparticles. Scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy were employed to monitor morphological, structural, and chemical changes of obtained oxide coatings. It was found that chemical and phase compositions strongly depend on PEO time. Photoluminescence and photodegradation of methyl orange served as a tool to estimate potential application of Al2O3/ZnO coatings. Photoluminescence measurements showed that clearly observable bands inherent to Al2O3 and ZnO are present in formed coatings, pointing at oxygen vacancies as the main source of photoluminescence. Longer PEO processing times proved beneficial for enhanced photocatalytic activity.

AB - This article reports on properties of oxide films obtained by anodization of niobium in phosphoric acid before and after the dielectric breakdown. Weak anodic luminescence of barrier oxide films formed during the anodization of niobium is correlated to the existence of morphological defects in the oxide layer. Small sized sparks generated by dielectric breakdown of formed oxide film cause rapid increase of luminescence intensity. The luminescence spectrum of obtained films on niobium under spark discharging is composed of continuum radiation and spectral lines caused by electronic spark discharging transitions in oxygen and hydrogen atoms. Oxide films formed before the breakdown are amorphous, while after the breakdown oxide films are partly crystalline and mainly composed of Nb2O5 hexagonal phase. The photocatalytic activity of obtained oxide films after the breakdown was investigated by monitoring the degradation of methyl orange. Increase of the photocatalytic activity with time is related to an increase of oxygen vacancy defects in oxide films formed during the process. Also, higher concentration of oxygen vacancy defects in oxide films results in higher photoluminescence intensity.
