AB - Magnesium (Mg) is an essential element in the human body primarily stored in bones. Mg ions have many potential benefits for bone tissue showing excellent osteogenic inductivity [1]. The aim of this study was to synthesize Mg substituted hydroxyapatite (Mg-HAP) for application in bone tissue engineering and to assess its behaviour in conditions mimicking physiological ones. Mg-HAP was synthesized using reflux method and its structural and morphological characterization was performed by XRD, FTIR and SEM. The changes in local structure and composition after irradiation and immersion in physiological solution and simulated fluid were assessed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The results of EPR analysis pointed out that irradiation did not change the composition and structure of Mg-HAP. After immersion in model media (simulated body fluid and saline solution), the small amount of by-product of synthesis disappeared after 24 h and Mg-HAP remained the only phase. Also, the radical signals in EPR spectra faded away after 28 days in model media, showing that the structure and composition of Mg-HAP both went through a kind of stabilization in simulated physiological conditions. These results make the investigated Mg-HAP promising material for application in bone tissue engineering.

AB - Cobalt molybdate is of importantce for the development of mobile telecommunication systems, such as mobile phones and high-quality microwave dielectric ceramics for high resonant frequency selectivity in microwave devices. Due to their special catalytic properties, cobalt molybdates have been used as catalysts in many chemical and petrochemical processes. The CoMoO4 nanoparticles ware synthetized in a simple, quick, and inexpensive way, by using a glycine nitrate procedure (GNP), with and without calcination at 450 °C [1], and investigated by applying the Briggs-Rauscher oscillatory reaction method [2]. The complex oscillatory BR reaction is sensitive to different insoluble analyte addition [3]. This feature of BR oscillatory reaction is used to investigate effect of different masses of GNP synthetized (with and without calcination at 450 °C) CoMoO4 samples on oscillatory dynamics. These two samples give the complete different effects in BR reaction. Obtained results strongly suggest that BR oscillatory reaction could be used for distinguishing these two samples, opening new direction in the investigation of ceramics materials.

AB - The main aim of this research is to show influence of different hydroxides, applied in carbon materials activation process on the electrochemical properties of activated carbon samples. The carbon material samples were prepared by hydrothermal treatment of sucrose and thermally activated using KOH, NaOH and LiOH by chemical activation method. The electrochemical properties of the obtained carbon material samples were examined by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and correlated to their physicochemical properties. Investigated samples showed characteristic capacitor-like behavior. The best result of specific capacitance was obtained for the sample synthesized treated by KOH, while the increase in capacitance follows the arrangement of the growth of ionic radius of a metal from an alkali which is used for activation. Dependence on the type of hydroxide is due to differences in the radii of a metal. The alkalis with larger radii of metal produce wider pores and consequently the structure of a porous layer become more accessible and available to the charge transfer of capacitive response.

AB - As magnesium is an important trace element in bone and teeth, and plays a key role in bone metabolism, the aim of this study was to obtain magnesium substituted hydroxyapatite (Mg-HAP) and to assess its application potential. Upon synthesis, the changes in local structure and composition after irradiation and immersion in physiological solution and simulated fluid were followed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Samples were also characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDS, AAS and TGA. The results showed that irradiation did not affect the composition and structure of Mg-HAP. After immersion in model media, the small amount of by-product of synthesis disappeared already after 24 h and Mg-HAP remained as the only phase. Also, the radical signals in EPR spectra faded or completely disappeared after 28 days in model media, which could indicate that the structure and composition of Mg-HAP both went through a kind of stabilization in conditions mimicking physiological ones. All these indicate that investigated Mg-HAP has good potential for biomedical application considering its behaviour in model media which imitate physiological conditions.

AB - Thanks to its similarity with biological apatite found in vertebrate hard tissues, calcium hydroxyapatite is one of the most investigated materials in bone tissue engineering. Since biological apatite is not stoichiometric, ion substituted hydroxyapatites are in the focus of many studies as they more closely mimic the composition of natural bone. Although there are many investigations of the influence of foreign ions on the structure and physico-chemical properties of ionsubstituted hydroxyapatites, there is no much information on their behaviour in different media. In present study, magnesium - which plays a key role in bone metabolism and silicon - which is necessary for normal skeletal development, were used as ion substitutes. The behaviour of Mg and Si substituted hydroxyapatite in simulated body fluid and physiological solution was investigated by XRD, FTIR and SEM. As the biological apatite is not stoichiometric, ion substituted hydroxyapatites attract much atention since they more closely mimic the composition of natural bone. Although there are many investigations of the influence of foreign ions on the structure and physico-chemical properties of ion-substituted hydroxyapatites, there is scarse information on their behaviour in different media. In the present study, magnesium (Mg), that plays a key role in bone metabolism and silicon (Si), that is necessary for normal skeletal development, were used as ion substitutes. The behaviour of Mg and Si substituted hydroxyapatite in simulated body fluid was investigated by XRD, FTIR and SEM. Obtained results confirmed great potential of these substituted hydroxyapatites for biomedical applications.",

AB - Nowadays, there is a very high importance of composite research and variety of their applications in the modern world. In that sense, we researched hollow glass capillaries filled with dissolved Grubbs catalyst (GC) and dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) were incorporated into a fiber-reinforced epoxy with the aim of improving the flow of healing agents to the crack site. The morphological investigation of the crack site was performed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), showing the difference between the samples depending on the used solvent. The software analysis of sample photographs has been performed by calculating the fractured/ healed surface area of the samples, revealing that approximately 20% of the volume was affected by the impact. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed that poly (dicyclopentadiene) (PDCPD) formed at the healed interface. However, the FTIR investigation of catalyst stability in different solvents showed structural changes in GC and partial deactivation. The mechanical tests of the samples showed that a recovery of 60% after 24 h at room temperature could be achieved through the use of a solvent and very low concentration of GC. The performed research results are a good base to develop the model for predicting the processes and morphology, with the goal to design the final mechanical and in the future, thermal, properties in advance. This opens a new direction for future research in the field of composite healing.

AB - In this work, plane tree seed-based activated carbons were characterized in detail for a variety of applications. The particularly important area of application would be in the artificial photosynthesis. After carbonization process of biomass precursor at 650°C, the resulting preliminary activated carbons were activated at various temperatures. The activated carbons were characterized by oxygen functionalities (a particularly important role has ester oxygen groups) which provide a unique microstructure. The chemical compositions of as-prepared activated carbons were analyzed through Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectra as well as gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy analysis, while morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy analysis. Applied analysis showed that detected graphite mainly becomes uniformly nanocrystalline system. The current study also explored the applicability of carbon material obtained from plane tree seed as a potential gaseous adsorbent. The characterization showed that the tested material contains both mesopores and micropores, and this should be advantageous for the gas sorption process, since mesopores may provide low-resistant pathways for the diffusion of CO2 molecules, while the micropores are the most suitable for trapping of CO2. The sorption process analysis (including adsorption/desorption isotherms behavior) shows indication that the rate-limiting step of CO2 adsorption onto activated carbon is probably governed by diffusion-controlled process, especially at temperatures below 850°C.
