AB - In this study, levan from Bacillus licheniformis NS032 was modified in an aqueous medium by octenyl succinic
anhydride (OSA), and the properties of the obtained derivatives were studied. The maximum efficiency in the
synthesis reaction was achieved at 40 ◦C and a polysaccharide slurry concentration of 30 %. Increasing the
reagent concentration (2–10 %) led to an increase in the degree of substitution (0.016–0.048). Structures of
derivatives were confirmed by FTIR and NMR. Scanning electronic microscopy, thermogravimetry, and dynamic
light scattering analyses showed that the derivatives with degrees of substitution of 0.025 and 0.036 retained
levan’s porous structure and thermostability and showed better colloidal stability than the native polysaccharide.
The intrinsic viscosity of derivatives increased upon modification, while the surface tension of the 1 % solution
was lowered to 61 mN/m. Oil-in-water emulsions prepared with sunflower oil (10 % and 20 %) by mechanical
homogenization and 2 and 10 % derivatives in the continuous phase showed mean oil droplet sizes of 106–195
μm, while the distribution curves exhibited bimodal character. The studied derivatives have a good capacity to
stabilize emulsions, as they have a creaming index ranging from 73 % to 94 %. The OSA-modified levans could
have potential applications in new formulations of emulsion-based systems.

AB - Microreactors are microfluidic devices with a network of channels where chemical reactions can take place. The diameter of those channels is less than 1 millimeter. Advances of such devices are reduction of the time required for the synthesis, better control of the reaction and the size of nanoparticles. There are different materials from which microreactors can be fabricated. The most common are silicon (Si), polymers, glass, ceramics and metals. In this study, we used Si/Pyrex glass and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) materials to fabricate two types of microreactors. Both types of microreactors had integrated heaters but different length and width of microchannels. Reaction was performed on the same temperature (80⁰C) and with the same reaction time in both microreactors. Synthesis of titanium (IV)-oxide nanoparticles was performed in these microreactors, in order to show how dimension of microchannels can affect the size of nanoparticles. Size distribution of nanoparticles was determined with dynamic light scattering (DLS). It was concluded that dimensions of microchannels had great influence on the size of the nanoparticles.

AB - Despite many advantages, the practical application of fullerene C60 and curcumin (CUR) has been limited by their hydrophobic nature, deficient solubility in aqueous media and, therefore, poor bioavailability. In this study, aqueous nanoformulations containing C60 and CUR in the absence and presence of three solubility enhancers, β-cyclodextrin (CD), Tween 80 (T80) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), were prepared and subjected to the antioxidant activity assessment. The content of C60 and CUR, stability, size and morphology of nanoparticles were determined using UV–vis, DLS and SEM techniques. Contrary to better solubility of pure C60 than the corresponding C60-CUR system, the solubilization of CUR in hybrid suspensions was improved compared to corresponding pure CUR suspensions, with the exception of the C60-CUR-PVP formulation. The DLS results revealed nearly monodisperse nature of CUR-T80 nanoformulation, while other ones ranged from widely dispersed to polydispersed. Depending on the type of solubilizer, similarity was observed in the particle size distributions of T80- and PVP-coated nanoformulations as well as water and CD nanoformulations. The presence of T80 differently and significantly reduces the particle size in all three nanoformulations, while PVP slightly reduces CUR-based nanoparticles but increases the size of C60 nanoparticles. Zeta potential values, ranging from − 9 mV to − 34 mV, show variation in the starting stability of nanoparticles, from unstable or relatively stable three PVP formulations and C60-T80 to highly stable CUR-T80 and C60-water. Compared to water nanoformulations as a control, SEM images of dispersant-coated nanoparticles lost the visible morphology of active components, showing variation in their morphology depending on the type of dispersant and active component used. Nanoformulations containing CUR in PVP and T80 expressed a very good antioxidant potential in DPPH radical scavenging assay, much stronger than ascorbic acid. At the same time, a moderate to high antioxidant activity in β-carotene bleaching assay was reached in PVP and T80 nanoformulations containing C60, CUR, and their noncovalent hybrid, as well. Our studies have shown that T80 and PVP colloidal systems containing C60-CUR hybrid, but also their individual components, can be used as stable antioxidant nanoformulations with potential application in the field of food and pharmacology.

AB - Electrodeposition and characterization of novel ceria-doped Zn-Co composite coatings was
the main goal of this research. Electrodeposited composite coatings were compared to pure Zn-Co
coatings obtained under the same conditions. The effect of two ceria sources, powder and home-made sol, on the morphology and corrosion resistance of the composite coatings was determined. During the electrodeposition process the plating solution was successfully agitated in an ultrasound bath. The source of the particles was found to influence the stability and dispersity of plating solutions. The application of ceria sol resulted in an increase of the ceria content in the resulting coating and favored the refinement from cauliflower-like morphology (Zn-Co) to uniform and compact corallike structure (Zn-Co-CeO2 sol). The corrosion resistance of the composite coatings was enhanced compared to bare Zn-Co as evidenced by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning Kelvin probe results. Zn-Co doped with ceria particles originating from ceria sol exhibited superior corrosion resistance compared to Zn-Co-CeO2 (powder) coatings. The self-healing rate of artificial defect was calculated based on measured Volta potential difference for which Zn-Co-CeO2 (sol) coatings exhibited a self-healing rate of 73.28% in a chloride-rich environment.

AB - Cerium-based conversion coatings have emerged as promising green alternatives to the harmful chromium-based ones, but the mechanism of corrosive protection still remains a subject of academic and industrial research. This study focuses at small scale phenomena of corrosion inhibition imparted by ceria (CeO2) to AA7075. Ceria nanoparticles were deposited from diluted and concentrated CeO2 sols by immersion. A multi-Analytical approach, combining Atomic Force microscopy (AFM), Scanning Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy, Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy, open circuit potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was employed. Deposition of ceria films led to deactivation of cathodic sites, i.e. decreased Volta potential difference, resulting in increased corrosion inhibition. In situ AFM real-Time monitoring revealed that during exposure to NaCl electrolyte, the changes in size of deposited ceria aggregates occurred: nanoparticles disintegrated/desorbed and re-deposited at the coating surface. The process was found to be dynamic in nature. Small particles size and inherent reactivity are believed to accelerate this phenomenon. Due to the greater CeO2 reservoir, this phenomenon was more pronounced with a thicker film, imparting longer term protection.

AB - An efficient encapsulation of the fullerene into two hydrophobized and one native polysaccharide provided water soluble supramolecular hybrids. After covalent modification of polysaccharides by cholesterol, noncovalent hybrids were prepared by a three-step procedure, including mixing of individual aqueous solutions of hydrophobized, as well as native sugar with solution of the fullerene in pyridine, dialysis and lyophilization. Although the degree of the fullerene incorporation into hydrophobized substrates, cholesterol-levan and cholesterol-pullulan, was lower in comparison to the native polysaccharide levan, hydrophobization provided nanoparticles with improved properties. The particle size distribution, studied by dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscopy revealed formation of moderately polydisperse aggregates, with the diameter contraction in comparison to the corresponding free polysaccharide, especially in the case of hydrophobized substrates. The morphological examination, done by scanning electron microscopy indicated the self-organization of the fullerene-native polysaccharide to round individual structures, while fullerene-hydrophobized polysaccharide hybrids tend to form networks. The antioxidant activity of the synthesized polysaccharide-C60 noncovalent hybrids versus starting polysaccharides was investigated by the DPPH radical scavenging and the β-carotene-linoleic acid bleaching methods. In all three complexes, the radical scavenging ability of the fullerene remained preserved, and a positive effect of levan hydrophobization was observed.

AB - In this work an attempt was made to produce epoxy coating doped with ceria (CeO2) and/or zirconia (ZrO2) nanoparticles, in single step electrophoretric deposition process. Deposition was carried out on AA6060 cataforetically from epoxy resin suspension containing synthesized stable aqueous colloidal dispersions (sols) of CeO2 and ZrO2. The influence of ceria and zirconia nanoparticles on the physicochemical characteristics of epoxy coatings was evaluated by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and adhesion measurements, while their corrosion stability during immersion in 0.5 M NaCl solution was monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. All ceria and/or zirconia containing coatings showed better corrosion stability and adhesion than pure epoxy coating, while between doped epoxy coatings one with CeO2/ZrO2 exhhibited the greatest values of charge-transfer resistance due to synergetic effect of both types of added nanoparticles.

AB - Cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles (CONPs) are interesting biomaterials with various applications in biomedicine, cosmetics and the pharmaceutical industry, but with limited practical application because of their low stability in aqueous media. The aim of this study was to obtain CONPs with increased stability by coating the particles. Microbial exopolysaccharides (levan, pullulan) and glucose were used to prepare CONPs under different synthesis conditions. Coating was attempted by adding the carbohydrates during (direct coating) or after (subsequent coating) the synthesis of CONPs. The obtained nanoparticles were characterized by X-Ray diffraction analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The suspension stability of the uncoated and coated CONPs in aqueous media was evaluated by measuring the hydrodynamic size, zeta potential and turbidity. The FT-IR spectra revealed the differences between coated CONPs and showed the success of subsequent coating with carbohydrates. Coating with carbohydrates improved the stability the CONP suspension by decreasing the size of aggregated particles. The suspensions of levan- and glucose-coated CONPs had the best stability. In this study, CONPs were prepared using non-toxic materials, which were completely environmentally friendly. The obtained results open new horizons for CONP synthesis, improving their biological applications.

AB - TiO2 powder was synthesized by a forced hydrolysis process and used for the synthesis of Pt/TiO2 composite that is to be foreseen as an advanced electrode material. Pt was incorporated into the synthesized TiO2 from a Pt colloidal dispersion as a precursor prepared by a microwave- assisted polyol process. Physicochemical properties of TiO2 and TiO2- supported Pt were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering and X- ray spectroscopy and diffraction techniques. The properties of Pt/TiO2 composite are correlated to the basic voltammetric response of its thin-layer form. It was found that subsequent thermal treatment of synthesized TiO2, which caused crystallization into mainly rutile phase, is required for appropriate Pt incorporation. Although being appropriately loaded by Pt, and the voltammetric response is typical for Pt-based material, the voltammetry of Pt/TiO2 corresponded to much lower loadings. The possibility for Pt particles to be trapped inside TiO2 agglomerates is indicated. The catalyst usage from the synthesized Pt/TiO2 was found quite moderate due to this trapping.

AB - In this study, corrosion protection efficiency of undoped epoxy and epoxy coating doped with cerium on aluminum alloy AA6060 is evaluated over prolonged exposure to 3wt% NaCl solution by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Different amounts of Ce(NO3)(3) are added into the epoxy suspension used for the cataphoretic deposition. Suspension stability is characterized by zeta potential and particle size values. Water content and thermal stability of the coatings were determined by thermogravimetric analysis. Insufficient corrosion stability, very close to that of undoped epoxy, is revealed for the coating with 1mM Ce. Higher cerium doping contributes to a significant increase in corrosion stability (2-3 orders of magnitude greater charge-transfer resistance). Epoxy coating doped with 5mM Ce displays a pronounced self-healing ability and the best corrosion protection and adhesion, owing to evenly distributed cerium precipitates on the aluminum surface. In the case of 10mM Ce-doped coating, the formation of Ce clusters and higher porosity causes a certain lowering of the protective ability. EIS measurements on epoxy coating with artificial defect confirm these findings.

EIS measurements on epoxy coating with artificial defect confirm these findings.",

AB - The simultaneous photocatalytic degradation of two dyes: methylene blue (MB), a cationic dye, and arylazo pyridone dye (SD), an anionic dye was investigated using sol-gel prepared TiO2 particles. The paper shows the main difference in degradation kinetics between single dye solution and binary dye solutions. The effects of competitive adsorption and the concentration of the dyes on degradation rate were analyzed. The preferential adsorption capacity of TiO2 toward MB was attributed to electrostatic interactions between the cationic dye and negatively charged TiO2 surface, while repulsion between the negatively charged surface of the catalyst and SD dye results in its lower adsorption capacity. The TiO2 surface charge and accordingly adsorption affinity of investigated dyes were found to be the main factors affecting degradation rate of the dyes. In the single dye system, the catalyst showed considerably higher degradation activity toward MB than to SD. In binary dye systems, the presence of SD did not affect the degradation of MB. On the other hand, the degradation efficiency of SD was found to be highly influenced by initial MB concentration and absorption ability of MB. In addition, higher MB concentration induces the production of a higher amount of reaction products, which also determine the SD degradation rate. Three kinetic regimes for the photodegradation of SD in binary mixtures were observed, used as a starting point to elucidate most influencing parameters for SD reaction kinetics.

AB - Ce-based conversion coatings (CeCCs) are a promising alternative to toxic chromate coatings on the metal substrates. In this work the CeCCs were electrodeposited on aluminium alloy AA6060 from aqueous solution of Ce(NO3)(3) at different potentials (-0.95 V, -1.2 V and -1.4V). Effect of deposition potential and post-treatment in the phosphate solution on morphology and protective properties of CeCCs with top cataphoretic epoxy coating was studied. To assess the differences between the protective systems, originating from the different CeCCs pre-treatments, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), polarization measurements, AFM and SEM/EDS analysis were used. The EIS study was undertaken to follow the evolution of corrosion behaviour of epoxy coating/CeCCs protective systems over prolonged time of exposure to the chloride environment (3 wt.% NaCl). Results suggest significantly improved corrosion stability of epoxy coating on AA6060 with as-deposited CeCCs sub-layers with respect to the same epoxy coatings with phosphate post-treated CeCCs. The far best protective properties, i.e., the greatest value of pore resistance and the lowest value of corrosion current density were provided by the epoxy coating/CeCC protective system with CeCC deposited at -1.2V and without post-treatment.

AB - Protective coatings should provide good barrier to ingress of corrosive species, sufficient adhesion to the substrate as well as good compatibility with additional top coats. The presence of pigments and/or functional agents in the coating composition could be beneficial in the corrosion protection. The doping with rare earth elements, like cerium, has shown to enhance the corrosion stability of organic coatings due to their self-healing properties. In this work cerium doped nanometric epoxy primers were deposited cataphoretically with different amounts of cerium nitrate (1, 5 and 10 mM) with the aim of optimizing the cerium content in the epoxy emulsion with respect to adhesion and corrosion stability of deposited primer coating. Cerium-free epoxy coating was also analyzed as a reference. The long term protection was evaluated in the chloride environment (3 wt.%NaCl) using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization measurements. Coatings were also analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with EDX, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric measurements. Size and zeta potential of epoxy emulsion were measured by dynamic light scattering and Laser Doppler velocimetry. Adhesion was determined both by a standardized pull-off method and by swelling in N-methyl pyrrolidone. The ceria content, as well as its distribution in the epoxy coating, was determined by SEM cross-sectional analysis. The homogeneity of epoxy coatings was evaluated and related to corrosion stability. The results showed that cerium-doping can promote the formation of compact epoxy coatings with enhanced protectiveness in the early stage of immersion in the corrosive media. Increased barrier properties of epoxy primers suggest good compatibility of ceria particles with polymeric epoxy layer. However, zeta potential measurements indicated that higher amounts than 10 mM Ce(NO3)3 added into the epoxy emulsion resulted in unstable emulsion. The water content in the epoxy coatings and their thermal stability were also determined. In addition, a detailed EIS study was undertaken to follow the evolution of corrosion stability of all samples with time of exposure to corrosive media. It was shown that all examined ceria containing epoxy emulsions resulted with the enhanced adhesion and corrosion stability of epoxy primers. However, the smallest loading of 1 mM showed only improvement during the initial exposure to NaCl solution. EIS and polarization measurements confirmed that higher ceria loadings also provide long term protection in chloride solution. The optimal ceria content in the epoxy emulsion, with respect to adhesion strength, thermal stability and long-term corrosion stability of protective systems was 10 mM.

AB - Among potential replacements for chromates, cerium-based conversion coatings (CeCCs) have been identified as leading candidates, showing a good promise as environmentally compliant corrosion inhibitors on Al alloys. In this work, CeCCs were synthesized on M6060 by electrolytic deposition (ELD), a well-suited method for the fabrication of films with controllable properties, at low processing temperature and cost. The CeCCs were deposited at room temperature from Ce(NO3)(3) solution, applying different cathodic potentials (-1.1, -1.4 and -1.6 V vs. SCE) for different deposition times between 5 and 20 min. Structural, morphological and compositional properties of the films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy. Ceria films were nanostructured, exhibiting a cubic fluorite structure. From corrosion perspective, the quality of CeCCs was evaluated in 0.5 M NaCI solution via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and linear sweep voltammetry. As shown, the coating corrosion quality is the interplay between deposition potential and deposition time. The highest potential led to highly cracked films of poor adherence, even at the shortest deposition time, which disqualified them from any corrosion protection application. The lowest potential (-1.1 V) produced crack-free coatings, but longer times (>= 10 min) were needed to provide the protective layer formation. The best corrosion protection offered CeCCs prepared at -1.4 V. The highest R-p (582 k Omega cm(2)) and the smallest CPE (12.6 . 10(-6) s(n) Omega(-1) cm) were obtained at 20 min deposition time. However, from economical point of view, 10 min deposition is a promising choice. These CeCCs also improved pitting corrosion resistance owing to homogeneous microstructure and sufficient thickness.

AB - Dip-immersion is a simple and cost-effective method for the preparation of Ce-based conversion coatings (CeCCs), a promising alternative to toxic chromate coatings, on metal substrates. In this work, CeCCs were prepared on Al-alloy AA6060 from an aqueous solution of cerium chloride at room temperature. The effect of immersion time and post-treatment in phosphate solution on the microstructure and corrosion properties of the coatings was studied. The longer the immersion time was, the thicker but more nonhomogeneous and cracked were the CeCCs. The post-treatment contributed to a sealing of the cracks, as proven by an increase in the corrosion resistance compared with the as-deposited coatings. The CeCCs prepared at longer deposition times and post-treated showed much better corrosion protection than those prepared at shorter deposition times. A detailed electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) study was undertaken to follow the evolution of the corrosion behaviour of the CeCCs with time of exposure to an aggressive chloride environment (3.5 % NaCl). For the sake of comparison, the EIS properties of bare AA6060 were also investigated. Linear voltammetry was performed to complete the study. The results confirmed the formation of protective CeCCs on the surface of AA6060. However, even CeCCs prepared at longer deposition times and post-treated provided short term protection in the aggressive environment, due to the small thickness of the coating.
Međutim, čak i kvalitetnija prevlaka (20 min potapanja i naknadno tretirana u fosfatnom rastvoru) obezbeđuje leguri kratkoročnu zaštitu u agresivnoj sredini usled svoje male debljine.

abstract = "Dip-immersion is a simple and cost-effective method for the preparation of Ce-based conversion coatings (CeCCs), a promising alternative to toxic chromate coatings, on metal substrates. However, even CeCCs prepared at longer deposition times and post-treated provided short term protection in the aggressive environment, due to the small thickness of the coating., Nanošenje prevlaka potapanjem u rastvor je jednostavna i ekonomski prihvatljiva metoda za pripremu konverzionih prevlaka na bazi cerijuma na metalnim supstratima, koje su dobra zamena za toksične hromatne prevlake. AB - Cerium-based conversion coatings (CeCCs) are one of the most prospective alternatives to the widely used chromate conversion coatings (CCCs) due to their anticorrosion efficiency, environmentally friendly nature and low cost. In this work, the CeCCs on AA6060 were prepared by immersion into aqueous cerium salt solutions at room temperature, and subsequently post-treated in heated phosphate solution. The effect of counter ion (nitrate and chloride) on the coating properties was studied testing CeCCs as sole or conversion layers for the top polyester coating. Since the 60 mu m thick polyester coating was applied, an artificial defect of 0.8 mm hole was introduced to faster assess the differences between pretreatments. The system with CCC pretreatment was used as reference. Corrosion properties were investigated in 0.5 M NaCl solution by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy while the adhesion strength was measured by NMPR (N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) and pull-off tests. As shown, the post-treated chloride-based CeCC offered better protection than crack-free thin nitrate-based CeCC, when used as sole coatings. On the other hand, it was brought to evidence that in combination with top powder polyester coating, the CeCC deposited from nitrate solution exhibited better protection compared to protective system pretreated with chloride-based one. Excellent polyester coating adhesion was found independently on aluminium surface pretreatment.
