AB - In this study, levan from Bacillus licheniformis NS032 was modified in an aqueous medium by octenyl succinic
anhydride (OSA), and the properties of the obtained derivatives were studied. The maximum efficiency in the
synthesis reaction was achieved at 40 ◦C and a polysaccharide slurry concentration of 30 %. Increasing the
reagent concentration (2–10 %) led to an increase in the degree of substitution (0.016–0.048). Structures of
derivatives were confirmed by FTIR and NMR. Scanning electronic microscopy, thermogravimetry, and dynamic
light scattering analyses showed that the derivatives with degrees of substitution of 0.025 and 0.036 retained
levan’s porous structure and thermostability and showed better colloidal stability than the native polysaccharide.
The intrinsic viscosity of derivatives increased upon modification, while the surface tension of the 1 % solution
was lowered to 61 mN/m. Oil-in-water emulsions prepared with sunflower oil (10 % and 20 %) by mechanical
homogenization and 2 and 10 % derivatives in the continuous phase showed mean oil droplet sizes of 106–195
μm, while the distribution curves exhibited bimodal character. The studied derivatives have a good capacity to
stabilize emulsions, as they have a creaming index ranging from 73 % to 94 %. The OSA-modified levans could
have potential applications in new formulations of emulsion-based systems.

AB - To investigate the influence of spinel structure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of BaTiO3/NixZn1−xFe2O4 (x = 0, 0.5, 1), NiFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 were in situ prepared by thermal decomposition onto BaTiO3 surface from acetylacetonate precursors. As-prepared powders were additionally sintered at 1150 °C and 1300 °C. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used for the detailed examination of phase composition and morphology. The magnetic, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties were investigated. The optimal phase composition in the BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 composite, sintered at 1150 °C, resulted in a wide frequency range stability. Additionally, particular phase composition indicates favorable properties such as low conductivity and ideal-like hysteresis loop behavior. The favorable properties of BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 make this particular composite an ideal material choice for further studies on applications of multi-ferroic devices.

AB - Our study aimed to preserve the natural blue dye of C-phycocyanin (C-PC)
phycobiliprotein from Spirulina microalgae due to its importance in the food industry. We
incorporated C-PC into hydrogels formed by combining starch and β-lactoglobulin (BLG)
using high-pressure (HP) processing to achieve this objective. Notably, thermal treatment
resulted in the complete loss of colour derived from C-PC.
We performed a comprehensive characterization of the resulting HP gels by rheology
measurements, texture profile analysis (TPA), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and
scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
Different compositions of binary (BLG/C-PC) and ternary (starch/BLG/C-PC)
systems were processed under high-pressure (HP) conditions reaching up to 4,500 bar. The
C-PC pigment was effectively preserved by mixing BLG and starch with C-PC at pH 7,
maintaining concentrations of 180, 5, and 10 mg/mL, respectively. The same concentrations
of components were retained in the binary systems.
Rheological properties of the gels were determined using a rheometer with
plane/plane geometry, and texture analysis was conducted through TPA. These findings
enabled the assessment of food gel's properties, such as hardness, springiness, chewiness, and
cohesiveness. The structural characteristics of the gels were determined by SAXS, offering
insights into the interactions between C-PC, BLG, and starch after HP processing. Adding CPC
and starch formed solid gels with a larger mesh than the pure BLG gels. SEM scans of the
gel surface revealed that all components influenced the overall morphology of gels. Even at
low concentrations, the addition of starch notably influenced the gels' visual appearance and
mechanical properties. Our investigation highlights the superior effectiveness of HP treatment
in the preservation of C-PC compared to high-temperature treatment, evident in the sustained
colour integrity of the C-PC blue dye.

AB - Aniline, the main representative of aromatic amines, occurs in a large number
of industries, such as the production of textiles, plastics, medicines, pesticides,
rubber, and varnishes.1 Due to practicality and efficiency, a molecularly imprinted
polymers (MIPs) can be used as sorbents for removing aniline.2 In this study,
magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer was synthesized via suspension
copolymerization while characterization was performed by various methods in order
to obtain an efficient sorbent for the aniline removal from an aqueous solution.
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) confirmed characteristic vibrational
bands which suggested successful synthesis of MIP, nitrogen gas adsorption-desorption
measurements as well as mercury porosimetry have shown that the most
dominant pores were mesopores, while scanning electron microscopy with energy
dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) confirmed a 3D spherical porous
structure with all the expected elements.

AB - The convergence of nano-, bio-, and information technologies is based on the understanding of complex hierarchical structures and systems, as well as on the material unity at the nanoscale and on technology integration from that scale. A growing interest in these technologies is a result of their potential to provide solutions to numerous societal challenges, such as advanced healthcare, environmental remediation, sustainable development, and adoption of cyber-physical systems based on the Internet of Things and the Internet of Systems. Taking into account that hybrid nanomaterials possess extraordinary physical and chemical properties derived from their size in the nanoscale, the aim of this work is to present the connection between processing parameters and multifunctional properties of nano scale hybrid materials, focusing on the study of ceramic-polymer structures before they can be nano-engineered into functional devices. The unique functionality of these nanostructures has enabled their applications in numerous devices such as: micro and nano-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS), sensors, microactuators, surface acoustic wave devices, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells, switches, thermistors, resonators and filters, electrooptic devices, etc. In this study special attention has been paid to their applications in the fields of electronics, biotechnology, environmental protection and remediation.

abstract = "The convergence of nano-, bio-, and information technologies is based on the understanding of complex hierarchical structures and systems, as well as on the material unity at the nanoscale and on technology integration from that scale. In this study special attention has been paid to their applications in the fields of electronics, biotechnology, environmental protection and remediation.",

AB - In this study, the structure, morphology and composition of the synthesized magnetite/3D-printed wollastonite (3D_W/M) composite were characterized, and its adsorption performance with respect to As(V) and Cr(VI) were studied. Magnetite (MG) modified 3D printed wollastonite was obtained by two step procedure: modification of 3D_W with 3-aminoproylsilane (APTES) followed by controlled magnetite (MG) deposition to obtain 3D_W/M adsorbent. The structure/properties of 3D_W/M were confirmed by applying FTIR, XRD, TGD/DTA, and SEM analysis. The adsorption properties of hybrid adsorbents were carried out for As(V) and Cr(VI) removal-one relative to the initial pH value, the adsorbent mass, the temperature, and the adsorption time. Time-dependent adsorption study was best described by pseudo-second order equation, while Weber Morris analysis showed that intraparticle diffusion controled diffusional transport. Similar activation energy, 17.44 and 14.49 kJ•mol-1 for adsorption As(V) and Cr(VI) on 3D_W/M, respectively, indicated main contribution of physical adsorption. Determination of adsorption parameters was performed by applying different adsorption isotherm models, and the best fit was obtained using Freundlich model. The adsorption capacity of 24.16 and 29.6 mg g-1 for As(V) and Cr(VI) at 2o C, Co = 5.5 and 5.3 mg L-1, respectively, were obtained. Thermodynamic study indicated favourable process at a higher temperature. Preliminary fixed-bed column study and results fitting with Bohart-Adams, Yoon-Nelson, Thomas, and Modified dose-response model showed good agreement with results from the batch study.

AB - The emerging threat of bacterial resistance to antibiotics prompts the urgent search for biomaterials for the treatment of infectious disease. Here we report on the synthesis and characterization of a multiphasic nanocomposite comprising magnetic iron oxide and silver nanoparticles. The method of synthesis involved the combustion of a metalorganic complex and reduction of the silver ions that were exchanged and/or adsorbed on the surface of iron oxide. Different physical and chemical treatments coupled to the reduction process, including ultrasound and Lugol's iodine solution, respectively, homogenized the distribution of the silver nanoparticles on the iron oxide phase. Remarkably, using ascorbic acid as a reductant enhanced the magnetic properties of the material as a result of the reduction of the magnetic matrix alongside the silver cations. The treatment with ultrasound detached large amounts of silver from the iron oxide phase and resulted in the lowest amount of silver incorporated in the nanocomposite. Despite that, this treatment led to the highest antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains, indicating that the homogeneity of the distribution of silver on the iron oxide matrix is a more important determinant of the antibacterial performance than the amount of silver incorporated in the material. At the same time, the treatment with Lugol's iodine equally increased the distribution homogeneity, but induced excessive ion exchange and crystal lattice substitutions, thereby adversely affecting the antibacterial performance. This has indicated that the mode of binding silver to iron oxide can compensate for the positive effects of homogeneous distribution with respect to the antibacterial performance.

AB - The impact of the type and amounts of nanofiller on the features of the glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (GMA-co-EGDMA)/organomodified montmorillonite (OMt) nanocomposites that were prepared by in situ radical suspension polymerization, was examined. Cloisite 30B and Cloisite 25A were used in this study as nanofillers, in amounts of 2 and 10 wt.%. The structure, morphology, thermal stability and porosity of the initial GMA-co-EGDMA copolymer and their nanocomposites were examined by ATR-FTIR analysis, wide angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and mercury porosimetry. It has been established that both clay nanofillers were successfully incorporated into the structure of the initial copolymer, simultaneously on their surface and also on cross-sectional area. Prepared samples with 2 wt.% have predominantly exfoliated, while samples with 10 wt.% have some tactoids-aggregates structure of the OMt layers. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that after ~ 30 % of degradation, all nanocomposites become more thermal stable than the initial copolymer. The obtained results indicate that porosity parameters can be easily modified with the addition of clay nanofillers and thus prepared nanocomposites adjusted to specific purposes.

AB - To investigate the magnetic behavior of starch-coated cobalt ferrites, well-established synthetic methods, i.e., coprecipitation, mechanochemical, ultrasonically assisted coprecipitation, microemulsion, and microwave-assisted hydrothermal syntheses were chosen for their preparation. The obtained materials had pure single-phase spinel structures. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy analyses revealed that the morphology of the samples is not uniform, and particle aggregation is a dominant process. Fourier transform infrared spectra and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the presence of starch in all–coated samples. The unusually higher saturation magnetization of starch-coated samples than their as-prepared analogs, obtained by coprecipitation, ultrasonically assisted coprecipitation, and microwave-assisted hydrothermal methods, might be explained by the Ostwald ripening mechanism induced by the coating process. A decrease in magnetization was noticed for the starch-functionalized nanomaterials synthesized by mechanochemical and microemulsion methods, in comparison to their as-prepared analogs, i.e., the size distribution of such nanoparticles is narrow, and the average diameter of the grains is near critical for the Ostwald ripening process.

AB - Magnetite (MG) modified cellulose membrane (Cell-MG), obtained by reaction of 3-aminosilane and subsequently with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid dianhydride functionalized waste Cell fibers (Cell-NH2 and Cell-DTPA, respectively), and amino-modified diatomite was used for Azoxystrobin and Iprodione removal from water. Cell-MG membrane was structurally and morphologically characterized using FT-IR and FE-SEM techniques. The influences of operational parameters, i.e. pH, contact time, temperature, and the mass of adsorbent on adsorption and kinetics were studied in a batch system. The calculated capacities of 35.32 and 30.16 mg g-1 for Azoxystrobin and Iprodione, respectively, were obtained from non-linear Langmuir model fitting. Weber-Morris model fitting indicates the main contribution of intra-particle diffusion to overall mass transport resistance. Thermodynamic data indicate spontaneous and endothermic adsorption. The reusability of adsorbent and results from wastewater purification showed that Cell-MG could be used as general-purpose adsorbent. The adsorbent/adsorbate surface interaction was considered from the results obtained using density functional theory (DFT) and calculation of molecular electrostatic potential (MEP). Thus, a better understanding of the relation between the adsorption performances and contribution of non-specific and specific interactions to adsorption performances and design of novel adsorbent with improved properties was deduced.

AB - A novel magnetic polymer/bentonite composite was prepared by suspension copolymerization of glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate in the presence of magnetic bentonite (MB-PGME) and functionalized with ethylene diamine and hexamethylene diamine (MB-PGME-ED and MB-PGME-HD). The obtained samples were characterized in terms of structure as well as thermal, magnetic and morphological properties. The sorption of rhenium (Re) and tungsten (W) from aqueous solution onto MB-PGME-ED and MB-PGME-HD was investigated considering their contact time and different initial ion concentration, giving possibility for usage of these composites as commercial sorbents. The sorption system follows the pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models. The results indicated a better fit with the Freundlich isotherm model.

AB - A simple organic-phase synthesis process was used to produce bare NiFe2O4 and ZnFe2O4 and core-shell ZnFe2O4@NiFe2O4 ferrite nanoparticles. X-ray powder diffractograms for all investigated powders show characteristic peaks of a spinel cubic structure without a secondary phase. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated the presence of nanoparticles that are smaller than 20 nm. The release of divalent ions (Ni2+ and Zn2+) from synthesized nanoparticles that were dispersed in saline solution, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and human serum, as determined by the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method, was lower than 2 wt %. These results demonstrate the stability of the investigated nanoparticles in biologically relevant media and exclude the toxicity of Ni2+ and Zn2+ due to metal ion release, thereby opening a broad range of (bio)medical applications.

AB - Cavitation erosion of hybrid acrylate composite films with polyhedral
oligosilsesquioxanes (POSS) was investigated in this study. The hybrid films are
made with 1, 3 and 5 wt% of POSS reagents containing: (a) hydroxyl (POSS-M),
(b) both hydroxyl and allyl (POSS-M-A) and (c) methacryloyl groups (POSS-MCl).
Addition of 5 wt% POSS-M-A caused the highest microhardness increase for
49.8%, in comparison to the pure matrix material. Cavitation resistance of hybrid
films, estimated as the time-dependent mass loss, was improved by POSS addition.
POSS-M-A addition (5 wt%) contributed to 94% lower mass loss comparing
to pure Bis-GMA/TEGDMA film. Scanning electron (SEM) and atomic force
microscopy (AFM) showed the lowest surface roughness obtained for composite
with POSS-M-A. The improved hardness and wear resistance of the composite
films indicated that POSS-M-A filler enhanced interfacial adhesion and reinforcing
of the Bis-GMA/TEGDMA matrix.

The improved hardness and wear resistance of the composite
films indicated that POSS-M-A filler enhanced interfacial adhesion and reinforcing
of the Bis-GMA/TEGDMA matrix.",

AB - Barium titanate (BaTiO3) attracts high scientific and technological attention due to good dielectric and electromechanical properties. Although BaTiO3 is one of the most frequently investigated ferroelectric materials, the need for finding new and/or improved synthesis methods of this material still exists. In this paper, a novel, mild synthesis route for producing tetragonal BaTiO3 from barium nitrate and Ti-oxalate precursor is presented. Morphology of the prepared and subsequently sintered BaTiO3 was determined by SEM. Particle size distribution of the as prepared powder was monitored by the laser diffraction. The phase composition, structure and lattice dynamics were investigated by XRD and Raman spectroscopy. Finally, dielectric parameters were determined in the temperature range from 30 to 180 degrees C, and within a variety of frequencies. Curie temperature was detected at 130 degrees C.

AB - This work is the first report of a very simple and fast one-pot synthesis of nickel oxide (NiO) and hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanoparticles by thermal decomposition of transition metal aqua complexes with camphor sulfonate anions. Obtained nanopowders were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform IR analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. X-ray powder diffraction confirmed the formation of high purity NiO and α-Fe2O3 crystal phases. In the case of α-Fe2O3, about five times larger average crystallite size was obtained. Fourier transform IR spectra of synthesized materials showed characteristic peaks for NiO and α-Fe2O3 nanostructures. To visualize the morphology and the chemical composition of the final products Scanning electron microscopy and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were performed. The thermogravimetric analysis was done for a better understanding of the general thermal behavior of precursor compounds. This easy-to-perform and fast preparation method opens a broad range of obtained materials’ usage, particularly due to its economic viability.

AB - Nickel-modified titanate/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by deposition of nickel ions onto hydrothermally prepared titanate supports, followed by hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction. Two different nickel precursors (hydroxide and carbonate) were used to tune reducibility and to vary the crystal phase structure of the final catalysts. The precursor reducibility and functional properties of the final catalysts were investigated systematically using various characterisation techniques. The results revealed a more facile reduction of the hydroxide precursor compared to its carbonate counterpart. Moreover, it was found that the formation of the anatase phase was favoured by the use of the hydroxide precipitation agent. The photocatalytic activity towards hydrogen production of the prepared catalysts was evaluated in the presence of 2-propanol under simulated solar light irradiation. A thorough study of the photocatalytic performance of the synthesised catalysts was conducted as a function of the precipitation agent used and the reduction temperature applied. The catalyst with dominant anatase crystal phase displayed the highest photocatalytic activity with a maximum H2 production rate of 1040 μmol h−1 g−1, this being more than four times higher than that of its carbonate counterpart. The catalysts with titanate structure showed similar activity, independent of the precipitation method used. The nanotubular structure was found to be the dominant factor in the stability of photocatalysts under long-run working conditions.

AB - Iron oxide, in the form of magnetite (MG)–functionalized porous wollastonite (WL), was used as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions (cadmium and nickel) and oxyanions (chromate and phosphate) removal from water. The porous WL was synthesized from calcium carbonate and siloxane by controlled sintering process using low molecular weight submicrosized poly(methyl methacrylate) as a pore-forming agent. The precipitation of MG nanoparticles was carried out directly by a polyol-medium solvothermal method or via branched amino/carboxylic acid cross-linker by solvent/nonsolvent method producing WL/MG and WL-γ-APS/MG adsorbents, respectively. The structure/properties of MG functionalized WL was confirmed by applying FTIR, Raman, XRD, Mössbauer, and SEM analysis. Higher adsorption capacities of 73.126, 66.144, 64.168, and 63.456 mg g−1 for WL-γ-APS/MG in relation to WL/MG of 55.450, 52.019, 48.132, and 47.382 mg g−1 for Cd2+, Ni2+, phosphate, and chromate, respectively, were obtained using nonlinear Langmuir model fitting. Adsorption phenomena were analyzed using monolayer statistical physics model for single adsorption with one energy. Kinetic study showed exceptionally higher pseudo-second-order rate constants for WL-γ-APS/MG, e.g., 1.17–13.4 times, with respect to WL/MG indicating importance of both WL surface modification and controllable precipitation of MG on WL-γ-APS.

abstract = "Iron oxide, in the form of magnetite (MG)–functionalized porous wollastonite (WL), was used as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions (cadmium and nickel) and oxyanions (chromate and phosphate) removal from water. Kinetic study showed exceptionally higher pseudo-second-order rate constants for WL-γ-APS/MG, e.g., 1.17–13.4 times, with respect to WL/MG indicating importance of both WL surface modification and controllable precipitation of MG on WL-γ-APS.",

AB - Zinc ferrite nanocrystalline powder was obtained by solid state synthesis of starting zinc oxide and hematite nanopowders. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the formation of nanocrystalline zinc‐ferrite powder with a mixed spinel structure with small amounts of remaining zinc oxide and hematite as impurities. Thick film paste was formed and screen printed on test interdigitated PdAg electrodes on alumina substrate. Formation of a porous nanocrystalline structure was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Hg porosimetry. Humidity sensing properties of zinc ferrite thick films were investigated by monitoring the change in impedance in the relative humidity interval 30‐90% in the frequency range 42 Hz – 1 MHz at room temperature (25 °C) and 50 °C. At 42 Hz at both analyzed temperatures the impedance reduced ~ 46 times in the humidity range 30‐90%. The dominant influence of grain boundaries was confirmed by analysis of complex impedance with an equivalent circuit.

AB - Magnetic and non-magnetic macroporous crosslinked copolymers of glycidyl methacrylate and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate were prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylenetriamine. The samples were characterized by mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (FTIR-ATR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and SQUID magnetometry. The FTIR-ATR analysis of synthesized magnetic nanocomposites confirmed the presence of magnetite and successful amino-functionalization. Non-functionalized and amino-functionalized nanocomposites exhibited superparamagnetic behavior at 300 K, with a saturation magnetization of 5.0 emu/g and 2.9 emu/g, respectively. TEM analysis of the magnetic nanocomposite has shown that magnetic nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed in the polymer matrix. It was demonstrated that incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles enhanced the thermal stability of the magnetic nanocomposite in comparison to the initial non-magnetic macroporous copolymer.
AB - U okviru ovog rada opisana je sinteza magnetičnih i nemagnetičnih makroporoznih umreženih kopolimera glicidil-metakrilata i trimetil-olpropan trimetakrilata suspenzionom kopolimerizacijom. Dobijeni uzorci su dodatno funkcionalizovani dietilentriaminom i okarakterisani živinom porozimetrijom, skenirajućom elektronskom mikroskopijom sa energo-disperzivnom spektrometrijom (SEM-EDS), infracrvenom spektroskopijom sa Furijeovom (Fourier) transformacijom (FTIR-ATR), termogravime-trijskom analizom (TGA), rentgenskom difrakcionom analizom (XRD), mikroskopijom atomskih sila (AFM), transmisionom elektronskom mikroskopijom (TEM) i SQUID-magnetometrijom.

AB - Pseudobrookite based nanopowder was obtained by solid state synthesis of starting hematite and anatase nanopowders in the weight ratio 55:45. Structural and morphological properties were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, UV/Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirming the formation of nanocrystalline pseudobrookite. The obtained powder was mixed with a binder (ethyl cellulose), dispersant (α-terpinol) and adhesion agents (acetic acid and distilled water) to obtain a thick film paste. It was screen printed on alumina substrate with interdigitated PdAg electrodes and fired at 600 °C for 30 min. Formation of a porous nanocrystalline thick film structure was shown using Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while Hall measurements enabled determination of carrier mobility. Change of impedance response in the frequency range 42 Hz–1 MHz with humidity was analyzed at room temperature (25 °C) and 50 °C in the relative humidity range 30–90% and 40–90%, respectively. At 42 Hz, and room temperature the impedance reduced ∼28 times, while at 50 °C it reduced ∼147 times in the relative humidity range 40–90%. The sensor showed rapid response (16 s) and relatively low hysteresis (8.39% at 25 °C and 2.64% at 50 °C) showing that this is a promising material for application in humidity sensing.
