AB - Activated titanium anodes, commercially known as dimensionally stable anodes (DSA®), are one of the most important discoveries in the field of applied electrochemistry of the 20th Century. These anodes are widely used for chlorine production in chlor-alkali industry, oxygen evolution reaction in electrowinnung processes and in electrochemical remediation of water and soil. DSAs consist of the mixed ruthenium−titanium oxide (RuO2–TiO2) coatings, oftenly doped with additional noble and/or transition metal oxides, deposited onto Ti surface. Structural, electocatlytic and capacitive properties of activated titanium anodes, prepared from oxides obtained by various synthesis methods, are investigated. These methods include sol–gel procedure, MW-assisted synthesis of the oxide from aqueous chloride solution and ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP). Microscopic investigations of the oxide sols and coatings showed that the aging time of the sols defines the coating morphology and, consequently, the electrochemical behavior of a coating. Better electrochemical characteristics, including anode stability in electrolysis, were registered for a combination of small RuO2 and large TiO2 sol–gel processed particles. Deactivation of an anode is manifested by an increased coating resistance and decreased electrochemically active surface area. The increase in the coating resistance is more pronounced for traditional coatings prepared by pyrolysis of metal chlorides, while sol–gel prepared coatings show more pronounced decrease in the electrochemically active surface area. The initial increase in coating resistance is caused by the dissolution of Ru species from the coating surface facing the electrolyte, which restricts the coating activity to the active sites from the interior of the coating (within the porous structure). It is shown that spray pyrolytic synthesis methods, e.g., ultrasonic spray pyrolysis, are versatile and applicable synthetic techniques for creating novel, rationally designed, RuO2–TiO2 material structures. Synthesized USP powders consisted of separated anatase and rutile phases, with anatase structure preserved even at 800 °C in the core of spherical particles onto which crystalline RuO2 preferentially grows.

AB - For the preparation of RuO2 coatings on Ti substrate, the RuO2 was synthesized in acidic aqueous medium by simple one-step low temperature-controlled microwave (MW) irradiation. The physical composition of synthesized solid phase was analysed through particle size distribution (PSD), whereas the coating was investigated for its capacitive response and activity in oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The oxide phase was found highly polydisperse, with overlapped fractions within rather narrow particle size range and clear tendency toward agglomeration. The smallest particles and their best resolved fractions were synthesized at the temperature just above the boiling point of the reaction medium, and quite below the chloride-to-oxide conversion temperature. Consequently, the highest OER activity was registered for RuO2/Ti anodes prepared from this sample, with strong indication of different oxide structure, with respect to the electrodes prepared from samples synthesized at higher temperatures. However, the coatings from high temperature samples have considerably higher capacitance than those synthesized at lower temperatures. These findings can be rather correlated to the MW temperature-dependent oxide structure than to different morphology analysed through PSD.

AB - In this manuscript the results of experimental studies of the properties of composite materials based on lignocellulosic (LC) and poly(methylmethacrylate) matrices filled with electrolytic copper powder are presented. Volume fractions of metal fillers in composite materials and tested samples were varied in the range of 0.5-29.8% (v/v), and the samples were prepared by compression - cold pressing and molding. Characterization included examination of the influence of particle size and morphology on the conductivity and percolation threshold of the composites using a variety of testing techniques: SEM, TGA, AFM. Thermal analysis of the prepared composites showed the improvement of the thermal characteristics of the composites. This was due to the presence of the metallic fillers, which are very good thermal conductors, hence accumulating the heat emitted during TGA measurements primary to matrix, whether it was lignocellulosic or PMMA. Presence of three dimensional conductive pathways was confirmed.

AB - The interactions of model system with pi-bonds are important and have been studied with interest. Presence of pi-bonds can affect the properties and behavior of various systems and processes. For example, fatty acids, which contain molecules with pi-bonds, and have a significant role in living organisms and influence human health.
Previous study performed calculations for different interactions of cis- and trans-unsaturated molecules. We used three groups of non-covalent interactions: (1) interactions of cis- and trans-2-butene dimers, (2) interactions between 2-butene and butane, and (3) interactions of butane dimers. SAPT decomposition analysis of interaction energies showed some different nature between the three groups of the studied model systems. Hence, one can assume that different methods should be used to study these three groups of systems. This study is based on detailed benchmark study using MP2 and large number of DFT-D methods, with various basis sets.
In benchmark study eleven methods: MP2, BLYP-D3, BP86-D3, M05-D3, M052X-D3, M06-D3, M06HF-D3, TPSS-D3, PBE1PBE-D3, B3LYP-D3 and B2PLYP-D3 and four basis sets: cc-pVDZ, cc-pVTZ, aug-cc-pVDZ and 6-311++G** for each of the method have been analyzed. The results obtained with these methods were compared with high level accurate CCSD(T) method at complete basis set (CBS) approximation.
The geometries used for calculations have been studied in all possible parallel and displaced parallel interactions. All calculations on interaction energies have been performed in Gaussian 09 (version D.01). RMTD values represent the results that have the best agreement with CCSD (T)/CBS values. As it was expected, different set of method with basis set for each of the model systems groups showed the best agreement with CCSD (T)/CBS values. For (1) interactions of 2-butene the best agreement showed method B3LYP-D3/cc - pVTZ with RMTD value of 0.0318, for (2) interactions between 2-butene and butane the best method was B2PLYP-D3/cc-pVTZ with value or RMTD 0.0293, and (3) interactions of butane dimers the best agreement has B2PLYP-D3/6-311++G** method with RMTD value of 0.0734. These results show which methods should be used to study systems with double and single bonds.

AB - In this manuscript the results of experimental studies of the properties of composite materials based on lignocellulosic (LC) and poly(methylmetacrylate) matrices filled with electrolytic copper powder are presented. Composites were prepared with metal fillers volume fractions at percolation threshold, i.e. for LC matrix composite it was 7.2% (v/v) and for PMMA based one was 2.8% (v/v), and the samples were prepared by compression and molding. Characterization included examination of thermal stability and morphology of prepared samples at percolation threshold using a variety of testing techniques: SEM, TGA, AFM. Thermal analysis of the prepared composites showed the improvement of the thermal characteristics of the composites. This was due to the presence of the metallic fillers, which are very good thermal conductors, hence accumulating the heat emitted during TGA measurements primary to matrix, whether it waslignocellulosic or PMMA. Presence of three dimensional conductive pathways was confirmed.

abstract = "In this manuscript the results of experimental studies of the properties of composite materials based on lignocellulosic (LC) and poly(methylmetacrylate) matrices filled with electrolytic copper powder are presented. Presence of three dimensional conductive pathways was confirmed.",

AB - This article is concerned with synthesis and characterization of electroconductive composite materials prepared by hot molding of mixtures of PMMA and electrochemically deposited copper powder and investigation of conductivity and percolation threshold of obtained composites. Electrodeposited copper powder content was varied from 0.5-8.8 vol%. Analysis of the most significant properties of individual components and prepared composites was performed using DC U/I measurements and AFM technique. The significant increase of the electrical conductivity was
observed as the copper powder content reaches the percolation threshold at 2.98 vol%. In the investigated range of electrodeposited copper powder concentrations the increase of the electrical conductivity of composites is as much as sixteen orders of magnitude.

AB - Microemulsion systems with water, toluene and nonionic surfactants are interesting for application due to the excellent solvent properties of aromatic hydrocarbons. In this study, the pseudo-binary phase diagram (“fish-diagram”) of such a ternary system was investigated using a branched technical alkyl polyethoxylate. Lutensol ON 50 (i-C10E5) was considered a suitable surfactant. The system with technical branched i-C10E5 exhibits very long, and for compositions near optimum solubilization, i.e., the minimum content of surfactant needed for a bicontinuous microemulsion, extremely long times for equilibration. In addition to visual observation, qualitative measurements of turbidity were performed with a UV-Vis spectrometer for characterizing the behavior of this unusually sluggish system. Isothermal phase diagrams at 20, 25 and 30 °C yielded inconsistent results after the change of temperature and the application of mechanical stress for different treatment of the samples. Ternary mixtures of water, toluene, and lutensol ON 50 seem to form long-living metastable states. The sluggishness and the ambiguous phase behavior of the system are discussed. Inconsistent results are attributed to the slow kinetics of the formation and destruction of liquid crystals and the ability of the system to form mini- -emulsions within an unusual concentration range.
Trokomponentna smeša vode, toluena i Lutensol ON 50 formira dugoživeća metastabilna stanja. Diskutovana je sporost i dvosmislenost ponašanja ovakvog sistema. Nekonzistentni rezultati su pripisani sporoj kinetici formiranja i razlaganja tečnih kristala, kao i sposobnosti sistema da formira mini mikroemulzije unutar neuobičajenog opsega koncentracija.

AB - The applicability of Peleg model was investigated for predicting mass transfer kinetics during the osmotic dehydration (OD) process of pears, at different concentrations (40, 60 and 70%, w/w) and temperatures (20, 35 and 50 degrees C) of sucrose solution. Increase in sucrose solution concentration resulted in higher water loss (WL) and solid gain (SG) values through the osmotic treatment period. After 360 min of osmotic treatment of pears, WL ranged from 23.71 to 31.68% at 20 degrees C, from 24.80 to 40.38% at 35 degrees C and from 33.30 to 52.07% at 50 degrees C of initial weight of pears. The increase of dry mass of the samples, SG, after 360 min of osmotic treatment ranged from 3.02 to 6.68% at 20 degrees C, from 4.15 to 7.71% at 35 degrees C and from 5.00 to 8.92% at 50 degrees C. Peleg's rate constants, k(1)(WL) and k(1)(SG), decreased with increasing temperature, as well as decreased with increasing concentration of osmotic solution at constant temperature. Both capacity constants k(2)(WL) and k(2)(SG) also exhibited the inverse relationship between capacity constant and temperature, as well as concentration of the osmotic solution. Peleg's rate constants for WL and SG at all temperatures followed an Arrhenius type relationship. The predicted equilibrium values were very close to experimental ones, which was confirmed with high coefficients of determination and by the residual analysis.

AB - One-step simple temperature-controlled microwave synthesis was applied to prepare nanocrystalline RuO2 dispersion from aqueous RuCl3. RuO2 dispersion was subjected to dynamic light scattering in order to analyze the synthesized particles, whereas structural and morphological properties of the solid phase are investigated by AFM, SEM, EDAX and XRD techniques. The ordered unusual shape of ca. 100-nm native particles, as well as highlyordered prismatic agglomerate sheets are observed. Capacitive properties of RuO2 was investigated by cyclic
voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 1 M H2SO4 and standard three-electrode cell, with ink-type working electrode on glassy carbon substrate A specific capacitances as high as 750 F/g were obtained, which negligibly depend on sweep rate in 5–500 mV/s range. These findings are quite unusual for this kind of material consisted of rather large particles, and makes it excellent candidate for both low and high power applications. The capacitive response appears stable during prolonged charge/discharge cycling.

AB - TiO2 was synthesized by forced hydrolysis process in order to be used as the support for Pt electrocatalyst (Pt/TiO2). Pt was deposited from Pt colloid solution synthesized by microwave-assisted polyol process. TiO2 powder (or C) was dispersed into H2O and 2 M H2SO4. The obtained suspension was stirred and Pt colloid was added afterwards. Upon filtration and rinsing with water, the obtained Pt/TiO2 (or Pt/C) catalyst was thermally treated at 160 C in N2 atmosphere. The catalyst water suspension for the preparation of 0.31 mg/cm2 thin layer electrode was loaded onto glassy carbon disk. Physical and chemical properties of the TiO2 and supported Pt catalyst were characterized by EDS, SEM, dynamic light scattering and XRD techniques. The influence of TiO2 thermal treatment on the electrochemical properties of Pt/TiO2 was also checked. Nominal Pt loading was 20 wt. %. EDS method revealed 18 wt. % loading of Pt on TiO2. The electrochemical properties of the Pt/TiO2 were examined by cyclic voltammetry in 0.1 M HClO4. The obtained results were compared with those obtained for carbon-supported Pt under the same conditions (Figure 1). The charge corresponding to the hydrogen desorption on Pt/TiO2 is lower than expected for 20 wt. % Pt. Although the voltammetric response is typical for Pt-based electrode material, the charge corresponds only to ~3 wt. % Pt. SEM images showed that TiO2 particles tend to form 3μm-sized agglomerates of ellipsoidal shape. The results indicate the possibility for platinum particles to be trapped inside TiO2 agglomerates. Even though calcination of TiO2 improved the Pt uptake from colloidal dispersion, it is still not as effective as commercial carbon support.

abstract = "TiO2 was synthesized by forced hydrolysis process in order to be used as the support for Pt electrocatalyst (Pt/TiO2). Even though calcination of TiO2 improved the Pt uptake from colloidal dispersion, it is still not as effective as commercial carbon support.",

AB - Combined spectroscopic (UV/visible, Raman, MS) and theoretical approaches were used to assess interaction of iron(III) with quercetin and baicalein in aqueous buffered solutions. Obtained results implicated formation of two iron quercetin complexes, with pH-dependent stoichiometries of 1:2 and 1:1, and one iron baicalein complex with stoichiometry of 1:1. Results of vibrational analysis and theoretical calculations implicated 3-hydroxy-4-carbonyl and the 3'-hydroxy-4'-hydroxy group of catechol as chelating sites for quercetin. For baicalein 5-hydroxy-6-hydroxy group is energetically the most favourable, although 5-hydroxy-4-carbonyl and 6-hydroxy-7-hydroxy chelating sites are energetically similar. Antiradical activity. reaction stoichiometry and number of inactivated DPPH molecules per mole of antioxidant indicated quercetin as a better antioxidant than its iron complex, baicalein and iron baicalein complex. The same structural features appeared to be important both in complexation and antioxidant activity. The equilibrium geometries, optimised using the B3LYP/6-31G (d, p) level of theory, predicted structural modifications between the ligand molecules in free state and in the complex structures. Correlation between experimental and theoretical results was very good.
