AB - Production of copper powders by the potentiostatic electrolysis under different hydrogen evolution conditions was investigated. Copper powders were characterized by the scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), particle size distribution (PSD), and by the determination of the specific surface area (SSA) of the formed powders. Depending on quantity of hydrogen generated during electrolysis, the two types of particles were formed: dendrites and cauliflower-like particles. The dendrites were formed without, while cauliflower-like particles with the quantity of evolved hydrogen enough to achieve strong effect on hydrodynamic conditions in the near-electrode layer. Although macro structure of the particles was very different, they showed similar micro structure. Namely, both types of the particles consisted of small agglomerates of approximately spherical Cu grains at the micro level. The existence of the spherical morphology was just responsible for random orientation of Cu crystallites in both types of particles. The SSA of cauliflower-like particles was more than two times larger than that of the dendrites, while their size was considerably smaller than that of the dendritic particles. In this way, the useful benefit of Cu powder formation in the conditions of vigorous hydrogen evolution is shown.

AB - Silver dendritic nanonstructures obtained by the potentiostatic electrolysis from different electrolytes at different overpotentials were characterized by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique and X-ray diffraction analysis of the produced particles. The needle-like and fern-like dendrites were formed from the nitrate electrolyte at overpotentials inside and outside plateaus of the limiting diffusion current density, respectively. The three-dimensional pine-like dendrites constructed from approximately spherical grains were formed from the ammonium electrolyte at overpotentials both inside and outside plateaus of the limiting diffusion current density. The morphology of silver dendrites was correlated with their crystal structure at the semi quantiative level. The change of crystal orientation from the strong (111) preferred orientation for the needle-like dendrites to almost randomly orientied spherical grains in the pine-like dendrites obtained at the overpotential outside the plateau of the limiting diffusion current density was observed. This trend in change of crystal orientation and morphology of Ag nanostructures was accompanied by considerable increase of the specific surface area (SSA) of the produced powders. The average crystallite sizes were in the range of 38-50 nm, proving nanostructural character of the formed Ag particles.

AB - The synthesis of orthogonally protected cis- and trans-3-amino-4-anilidopiperidine derivatives has been accomplished in six steps, starting from readily accessible 4-piperidone derivatives. The last three steps, i.e., N-acylation, Hofmann rearrangement, and carbamate cleavage, involved separated (+/-)-cis and (+/-)-trans intermediates. Complete retention of configuration was observed at position 3 of the piperidine ring. Specifically protected positions 1 and 3 at the piperidine scaffold allow for selective deprotection and introduction of diverse substituents at the respective nitrogen sites. The orthogonally protected anilidopiperidines open avenues to potentially pharmacologically active compounds, including opioids and various bivalent ligands for G protein-coupled receptors. In addition, a prototype of a novel class of fentanyl derivatives, possessing a 3-amino group, was synthesized by using the same approach.

AB - Lead granules synthesized by the potentiostatic regime of electrolysis were characterized by the scanning electron microscopy technique. Effect of the different parameters of electrolysis, such as solution composition, overpotential of electrodeposition, and quantity of the electricity, on lead granular growth has been systematically investigated. Aside from the electrochemical aspects of lead granular growth, crystallographic aspects of the obtained granules were also analyzed. In the dependence of the electrodeposition conditions, granules of various shapes were obtained. The granules, such as octahedrons and hexagons, as well as many various types of twinned particles: single-twinned, multiply-twinned, lamellar-twinned, and many other complicated shapes denoted as polyparticles, were synthesized through regulation of the parameters of electrolysis. Increasing both the concentration of Pb2+ ions and overpotential of the electrodeposition favored the formation of more complicated forms. Formation of granules of specified crystallographic characteristics was also correlated with the basic principle of metal electrocrystallization.

AB - Electrodeposition of lead from the concentrated nitrate electrolyte in the potentiostatic regime of electrolysis has been investigated by the analysis of the potentiostatic current transients and scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was found that the process of Pb nucleation from the concentrated electrolyte follows Scharifker model based on the 3D (three-dimensional) instantaneous nucleation with diffusion-controlled growth. The deviations of the obtained dependencies from the theoretical prediction for this model have been also discussed. Needle-like and fern-like dendrites, as well as crystals of irregular shape (precursors of dendrites) were formed in the diffusion controlled electrodeposition. The SEM analysis of these dendritic forms revealed their 2D (two-dimensional) growth. The size of needle-like dendrites was considerably larger than the size of both the fern-like dendrites and the irregular crystals. Although the electrodeposition process occurred inside the linear diffusion layer of the macroelectrode, the shape and size of dendrites were determined by the effect of local diffusion fields formed around tips (spherical diffusion) and top edges (cylindrical diffusion) of protrusions formed in the initial stage of the electrodeposition. The growth rates under the conditions of spherical and cylindrical diffusion control were mutually compared and a faster growth under the conditions of the spherical, in relation to the cylindrical diffusion, was proved. The effect of the current density distribution on formation of the final forms of Pb dendrites was also discussed.

AB - Silver dendrites were prepared by electrochemical deposition. The structures of the Ag dendrites, the type of twins and their distribution were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Z-contrast high angle annular dark field transmission electron microscopy (HAADF), and crystallographically sensitive orientation imaging microscopy (OIM). The results revealed that the silver dendrites were characterized by the presence of randomly distributed 180 degrees rotational twin domains. The broad surface of dendrites was of the {111} type. The directions of growth of the main dendrite stem and all branches were of the LT 112> type.

AB - The processes of Pb electrodeposition under diffusion control were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the formed crystals. The orientation of grains of hexagonal shape formed in the initial stage of electrodeposition strongly affected the final morphology of the Pb crystals. The formation of Pb crystals of the different shape from the same initial shape was discussed in terms of the effect of orientation of initially formed grains on the type of diffusion control. A spherical diffusion layer was formed around the tip of the hexagonal-shaped grain oriented with its tip towards the bulk solution that led to the formation of elongated crystals in the growth process. On the other hand, a cylindrical type of diffusion was responsible for the growth of hexagonal-shaped grains oriented with the lateral side towards the bulk solution. Pb crystals with well-defined sides parallel to the surface area of the macroelectrode were formed under this type of diffusion.

AB - The surface structure of powder particles, which allows free flow of copper powder, was examined. It has been shown that a sufficiently dense surface structure which permits free flow will be obtained if apparent density is higher than 2.2 - 2.3 g/cm(3). Such a surface structure can be obtained by reversing current electrodeposition of powder at considerably lower apparent densities of powder due to selective dissolution of subparticles during anodic time of reversing current wave. The surface structure of copper powder particles is discussed and correlated with the lowest apparent density at which the copper powder can still flow.

AB - An efficient, five-step synthetic approach to various acyclic 1,3-diamines has been developed and applied to the preparation of a novel class of open-chained fentanyl analogues. The acyclic derivatives 5.1-5.5 (all new compounds) were synthesized with the aim of estimating the significance of the piperidine ring for the opioid analgesic activity of anilido-piperidines. The starting beta-keto-amide 1.1, prepared by the aminolysis of methyl acetoacetate with methyl phenethylamine, (93% yield), was successively reacted with NaH and BuLi, to form the highly reactive alpha,gamma-dienolate anion 1.1a. Regio and chemoselective gamma-alkylation of the dienolate with various primary and secondary alkyl halides furnished the beta-keto-amides 1.2-1.5 (76-91%). Reductive amination of the keto-amides 1.1-1.5 with aniline and Zn powder in acetic acid, via the enamine intermediates 2.1-2.5. afforded the beta-anilino amides 3.1-3.5 (74-85%). After reductive deoxygenation of the tertiary amide group, using in situ generated diborane, the corresponding 1,3-diamines 4.1-4.5 were obtained (87-97%). The synthesis of (+/-)-2,3-seco-fentanyls 5.1-5.5 was completed by N-acylation of the diamines 4.1-4.5 with propionyl chloride, followed by precipitation of the monooxalate salts (86-95%). The parent compound, 2,3-seco-fentanyl 5.1, was found to be a 40 times less potent narcotic analgesic than fentanyl but still 5-6 times more active than morphine in rats. while i-Pr derivative 5.3 was inactive. Apart from the pharmacological significance. the general procedure described herein may afford various functionalized, 1,3-diamines as potential complexing agents and building blocks for the synthesis of aza-crown ethers.

AB - The structure of the surface of copper powder particles is discussed and correlated with the lowest apparent density at which copper powder can still flow. It is shown that such structures can be easily obtained in the electrodeposition of powders in reversing current regimes.

AB - An analysis of the effects of the shape, surface structure and size distribution of particles on the flow ability of the copper powder was performed. It is shown that the most important property of the particles of a powder, regarding the flow ability of the powder, is the surface structure of the particles.

AB - One of the most important properties of copper powder is its flow ability which depends on the shape and the structure of the powder particles. A procedure for the determination of a representative powder particle permitting the free flow of copper powder is proposed.

AB - The possibility of depositing copper powders with different apparent density by changing the shape of reversing current wave is shown. The morphology and crystallinity of powder particles can be varied considerably by changing shape of the reversing current wave and, hence, the apparent density of powders. The relation of apparent density with particle morphology and structure was illustrated.
AB - U radu je pokazana mogućnost dobijanja bakarnih prahova različitih nasipnih masa promenom oblika talasa reversne struje. Uspostavljena je zadovoljavajuća veza između morfologije i strukture čestica praha bakra i nasipne mase praha.

AB - The quantitative microstructural analysis and the sieve analysis of copper powder as well as the scanning electron microscopy analysis of the copper powders particles were performed. It was found that the structure of the copper powder particles determines the apparent density of copper powder. The powder particles from the same fractions of different powders occupy approximately the same volume, but the structure of metallic copper is very different. This causes the difference in apparent densities of copper powder obtained under different conditions. The more dendritic is the structure of powder particles the smaller is the apparent density of copper powder.
