AB - Cobalt–chromium–molybdenum (CoCrMo) alloys are known for medical use due to their biocompatibility, corrosion and wear resistance. The chemical and phase composition, as well as microstructure of the alloy directly affect the mechanical properties. In this investigation, CoCrMo alloy samples were obtained by vacuum precise casting. The procedure of melting and casting process as well as their parameters are given. Molds fabricated of copper, gray iron, steel, ceramics and graphite were used during the casting process. In this way, the cooling rate influence on the obtained microstructure was examined. Besides, different casting temperatures (1400°C, 1450°C and 1500°C) were applied for each kind of mold. After metallographic preparation, the microstructure was examined on the cross section of samples by optical microscopy. The obtained results show that by increasing the cooling rate, the microstructure of samples become finer and more homogeneous.

AB - Concrete is a material that has been used for centuries and is often modified using polymers. In the last fifty years, synthetic polymers have been used for the modification of concrete, but also for the production of concrete. In recent decades, sulfur concrete has been an interesting product that can be used mainly in low-rise construction due to its characteristics. In this work, we used the starting mixture for the preparation of sulfur concrete (sand, elemental sulfur with the addition of modified sulfur and fillers) heated to a temperature of 120 ºC to 170 ºC and homogenized. The results of previous research on the production of sulfur concrete showed that the density of the obtained product changes depending on the type as well as the amount of filler added to the basic mixture based on raw materials. Talc, microsilicon, plate alumina and fly ash were used as fillers. The amounts of fillers were 0%, 1%, 3%, 5%, 7% and 10%.

AB - The aim of this research was to obtain an initial characterization of the BaO and TiO2components, as well as to conduct preliminary research into the possibility of activating the initial components in order toobtain barium titanate. Chemical and X-ray structural analysis of the initial components was performed. In order to determine the possibility of applying a mechanochemical activator and the activation time in which the first intermediate compounds were formed by the activation of the starting substances, the system was activated for 30 minutes. After this, an X-ray structural analysis was performed and certain changes in the crystal lattice of the starting components were made. X-ray structural analysis showed that during grinding, amorphization of the initial components occurred, which is the first stage in the process of obtaining titanate, as well as the presence of a small amount of barium titanate, which is indicating the presence of an intermediate compound in the process of finally obtaining barium titanate.

AB - Two Co(III) complexes with condensation product of thiosemicarbazide and 2-acetylthiazole (HL1 ligand, (E)-2-(1-(thiazol-2-yl)ethylidene)hydrazine-1-carbothioamide) and the condensation product of 2-acetylpyridine and Girard's P reagent (HL2Cl ligand, (E)-1-(2-oxo-2-(2-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene)hydrazinyl)ethyl)pyridin-1-ium chloride) have been synthesized and characterized based on the results of single-crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR and IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Cobalt(III) complex with HL1 ligand, [Co(L1)2]BF4⋅H2O (1), is bis octahedral complex in which two deprotonated ligand molecules coordinate in a mer arrangement through two NNS sets of donor atoms. In cobalt(III) complex with HL2Cl, [Co(L2)(N3)3] (2), the ligand is coordinated in deprotonated, formally neutral, form to Co(III) ion in tridentate fashion through NNO set of donor atoms, and the other three coordination sites of a monokis octahedron are occupied by meridionally coordinated azide anions. DFT calculations were performed to elucidate coordination preferences of these ligands toward Co(III) ion.

AB - Sodium carbonate is a well-known material for being used as a good sorbent of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and as such has gained increasing importance in environmental protection. In order to enhance its sorption ability, mechanochemical activation of sodium carbonate was carried out in this study while the occurred changes after the activation and the relaxation time in a controlled environment were monitored. Activation was performed in a vibro-mill from 1 to 28 min. Based on the results of specific surface area, obtained by BET, the samples activated for 2 and 7 min were chosen and placed in a moist carbon dioxide atmosphere for 96 h, a period called the relaxation time. Differential thermal and thermogravimetric analyses were applied with the aim of determining the changes that occurred on the activated samples during the relaxation period. The decomposition temperature change of activated Na2CO3 samples, as well as mass loss and conversion level of Na2CO3 to NaHCO3 were monitored depending on activation and relaxation time periods. The conversion reactions of sodium carbonate to sodium bicarbonate under the specified environment of carbon dioxide and moisture were also studied, and the thermodynamic data such are changes in enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs energy at the temperature range of 0–160 °C are given.

AB - During mechanical activation, qualitative changes that can produce various phenomena occur in the material. In this study, anhydrous sodium carbonate was mechanically activated for 2, 7, 14, and 28 minutes in a vibro mill at a frequency of 3000 oscillations per minute. After activation, four series of activated samples were stored in the air at room conditions for 31 days (relaxation period). To monitor the kinetics of the transformation process of activated sodium carbonate samples, i.e. the mechanism of sodium bicarbonate formation during relaxation, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis was used. FTIR testing was performed as a function of relaxation time for all four series of samples, with characteristic groups observed: CO32-, HCO3- and OH-. The obtained results provided kinetics parameters for the transformation of sodium carbonate into sodium bicarbonate due to the chemisorption of moisture and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

AB - In this study, a mixture of magnesium oxide and titanium dioxide was mechanically activated in order to investigate the possibility of mechanochemical synthesis of magnesium titanate. Mechanical activation was performed for 1000 min in a high-energy vibro mill (type MH954/3, KHD Humboldt Wedag AG, Germany). The mill is equipped with housing having a horizontally placed shutter. The cylindrical stainless steel working vessel, with inner dimensions of 40 mm in height and 170 mm in diameter, has working elements consisting of two free concentric stainless steel rings with a total weight of 3 kg. The engine power is 0.8 kW. Respecting the optimal amount of powder to be activated of 50-150 g and the stoichiometric ratio of the reactants in the equation presenting the chemical reaction of magnesium titanate synthesis, the starting amounts were 20.2 g (0.5 mol) of MgO and 39.9 g (0.5 mol) TiO2. During the experiments, X-ray diffraction analysis of the samples taken from the reaction system after 60, 180, 330, and 1000 min of mechanical activation was performed. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry was used for chemical composition analysis of samples taken at different activation times. Based on the X-ray diffraction analysis results, it can be concluded that the greatest changes in the system took place at the very beginning of the mechanical activation due to the disturbance of the crystal structure of the initial components. X-ray diffraction analysis of the sample after 1000 min of activation showed complete amorphization of the mixture, but diffraction maxima characteristic for magnesium titanate were not identified. Therefore, the mechanical activation experiments were stopped. Evidently, the energy input was not sufficient to overcome the energy barrier to form a new chemical compound-magnesium titanate. The failure to synthesize magnesium titanate is explained by the low negative Gibbs energy value of-25.8 kJ/mol (despite the theoretical possibility that the reaction will happen), as well as by the amount of mechanical energy entered into the system during activation which was insufficient to obtain the reaction product. Although the synthesis of MgTiO3 was not achieved, significant results were obtained which identify models for further investigations of the possibility of mechanochemical reactions of alkaline earth metals and titanium dioxide.

abstract = "In this study, a mixture of magnesium oxide and titanium dioxide was mechanically activated in order to investigate the possibility of mechanochemical synthesis of magnesium titanate. Although the synthesis of MgTiO3 was not achieved, significant results were obtained which identify models for further investigations of the possibility of mechanochemical reactions of alkaline earth metals and titanium dioxide., U ovom radu izvršen je pokušaj mehanohemijske sinteze magnezijum titanata u visokoenergetskom mlinu sa torzionim oprugama i prstenastim radnim elementima.

AB - To provide the quality required for its use, raw kaolin must be subjected to certain processing procedures like delamination which is applied to the layered structure materials. The aim of this research is to determine the possibility of performing delamination in the extruder and to estimate the effects of this process on the physico-chemical properties of kaolin. The results showed that delamination can be efficiently realized in the extruder by shearing densely packed layers under the influence of friction force and added Na2 CO3 electrolyte. The crystal structure of the system was thus disrupted. This was confirmed by the Hinckley index (HI) decrease and by the dilatometric characteristics changes during heating. The particle size was reduced and, furthermore, new adsorption centers were formed, which led to an increase in the total cation exchange capacity (CEC). The plasticity of kaolin decreased with the increasing delamination degree, as well as the amount of water required for plastic processing, which is favorable in drying ceramic products.

AB - This work presents a grinding process of monoammonium phosphate (MAP) as an active component in a powder fire extinguisher (PFE). The aim was to determine the grinding time for reaching the optimal particle size of MAP necessary for permanent fire extinguishing. MAP grinding was performed by using a laboratory ceramic ball mill and a vibrating cup mill. The grinding process was controlled by sieving using a 100 µm sieve at precisely defined time intervals. The efficiency of a PFE depends on the share of the -100 µm fraction of the active component, which has to exceed 60 %. The optimal grain size with 64 % of fraction of particle size -100 µm was obtained after 33 min of grinding of ≈3000 µm mm grain size MAP by using a ball mill (single-stage grinding). In two-stage process, by grinding the same initial MAP sample (≈3000 µm) in the vibro mill for 10 min, powder with the upper limit grain size of 300 µm and the mean grain diameter of 120 µm was obtained. This sample with a reduced size was further ground in the ceramic ball mill yielding 67.5 % of the fraction of particle size -100 µm after 19 min. The total time of the two-stage grinding process was 29 min. By analyzing the grinding time of MAP required to get the lowest required share of the fraction of particle size -100 µm that provides the effectiveness of formed PFE it can be concluded that 64 % of this fraction was obtained after 33 min of single-stage grinding, while only after 26 min in the two-stage process. Thus, the grinding time was reduced by 7 min indicating certain energy savings. Stability and hydrophobicity of the obtained PFE were achieved by coating with magnesium stearate (MgSt) at the content of 2 % in a ball mill for 15 min. The coating was confirmed by the standardized procedure for verification of PFE hydrophobic properties in contact with water drops. To obtained PFE had component mass ratios of MAP:AS:CC:QS:MgSt=55:20:18:5:2 (AS-ammonium sulfate; CC-calcium carbonate, QS-quartz sand) and was further characterized by chemical and granulometric analyses. The fire extinguishing efficiency of the PFE was tested in controlled conditions, whereby fires were initiated by burning solid materials and flammable liquids. In both cases, immediate elimination of flames was achieved, thus proving the efficiency of the PFE obtained in this work for practical applications.

Homogenizovanoj čvrstoj mešavini dodaje se 33 masena % rastopa elementarnog i modifikovanog sumpora (u masenom odnosu 98,2 % elementarnog sumpora i 1,8 % modifkovanog sumpora), tzv. sumpor modifikovanog veziva.

AB - Secondary sulfur obtained as a by-product in the oil refining process is a major problem as an environmental pollutant. One of the possibilities for environmental protection is the use of sulfur obtained in this way as a component of sulfur concrete. Mixing of sulfur with suitable additives can provide longer working lifetime of sulfur concrete, as well as maintenance of the former physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of concrete. Such mixtures are usually called modified sulfur or sulfur cement. Secondary sulfur produced in the oil refining process by the Klaus process (approval of crude oil) cannot be used in this form. In order to be ready for the use of sulfur concrete and asphalt, it is necessary to modify elemental sulfur from cyclic to chain form, obtaining of modified sulfur whose application is as a binding agent in a concrete instead of portland cement is described in this paper. Influence of dicyclopentadien, an organic additive, on sulfur modification has been studied in this research. Microstructure and mineral analysis of modified and unmodified sulfur cement binding are performed using polarized and scanning electron microscopes and X-ray diffraction spectrometer.

AB - The study is focused on the determination of the most effective chemical leaching process for the simultaneous demineralization/deashing and desulfurization of subbituminous coal from the Bogovina Basin. Coal was treated for 30 min, at different temperatures, using variable concentrations of hydrochloric, nitric, acetic and citric acids; hydrogen peroxide, mixture of hydrogen peroxide and nitric acid (pH 2), as well as by the stepwise leaching process (nitric acid + mixture of hydrogen peroxide and nitric acid, pH 2). The changes in mineral composition, caused by the chemical leaching, are followed using X-ray diffraction, whereas alterations of coal organic matter are tracked by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and the content of fixed carbon. Inorganic acid leaching, regardless of the temperature and acid concentration, enabled the successful deashing of coal, whereas the percent of desulfurization was insufficient. The organic acid leaching was not satisfactory for both, deashing and desulfurization. Leaching by H2O2 and H2O2/HNO3 mixture (pH 2) resulted in moderate desulfurization, but the ash reduction was low. The most suitable method for the simultaneous effective ash (78 wt.%) and the sulfur (66 wt. %) removal from Bogovina coal is the two-step leaching, combining 10 vol. % HNO3 and mixture of 35 vol. % H2O2/10 vol. % HNO3 of pH 2 at 60 °C.
% H2O2/10 запр. % HNO3 (pH 2) на 60 °С.

AB - Sodium carbonate material is used as a good sorbent of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere,
and has gained increasing importance in environmental protection. In order to enhance its
sorption ability, mechanochemicaly activatied sodium carbonate was investigated, and the
occurred changes after the activation and the relaxation time in a controlled environment were
monitored. Activation was performed in a vibro-mill for 2 and 7 minutes, and the activated
samples were placed in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide at a humidity of 95 % for 96 hours,
(the relaxation time). Differential thermal and thermogravimetric analyses were applied with
the aim of determining the changes that occurred on the activated samples during the
relaxation period. The decomposition temperature change of activated Na2CO3 samples, mass
loss, and conversion degree of Na2CO3 to NaHCO3 was monitored depending on activation
and relaxation time periods.

The decomposition temperature change of activated Na2CO3 samples, mass
loss, and conversion degree of Na2CO3 to NaHCO3 was monitored depending on activation
and relaxation time periods.",

AB - The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures of cordierite (2MgO*2Al2O3*5SiO2) with 5.00 mass % TiO2 was performed in a high energy ball mill during 10-80 min. The applied compaction pressure before the sintering process was 2t/cm2. The sintering process was performed at 1350°C for 2h and 4h in air atmosphere. Scanning electron microscopy was performed to analyze the microstructure of both compacted and sintered samples. Atomic force microscope was used to investigate the surface of the sintered samples. This paper investigates the influence of prolonged sintering time on the densities of the sintered samples, along with electrical properties.
AB - Sodium carbonate samples were mechanically activated in a vibro mill. The increase in the free surface area of the activated samples was monitored by the BET method and the state of the crystal lattice by the diffraction method. The analysis of the results showed a significant increase in the free surface of the activated material as well as significant changes in the crystal structure of the samples due to grinding in a vibro mill. Such activation of sodium carbonate would enable a significant increase in the sorption properties of sodium carbonate and thus its application in environmental protection.

AB - Among the variety of advanced materials with exceptional properties and applications, shape
memory alloys (SMAs) have a unique ability to return to previously defined shapes or sizes if subjected to the relevant thermal treatment. The memory effect can be reached only in the presence of a specific phase transformation, reversible austenite to the martensite phase. There are several basic types of SMAs, such as Ni-Ti (nitinol), Cu-based, and Fe-based alloys. The economic effect (low price) is the main advantage of Cu-based SMAs compared with other SMAs. Namely, these Cu-Al-Ni alloys can be applied in various industrial fields, especially when high transformation temperatures are required (near 200 °C), thanks to their excellent thermal stability and high transformation temperatures.

AB - Sodium carbonate was mechanically activated for 7 minutes in a vibro mill at a frequency of 3000 oscillations per minute. Activated samples were stored in the air at room conditions for 31 days. To monitor the kinetics of the transformation process of sodium carbonate to bicarbonate, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis was used and was performed as a function of relaxation time for characteristic groups observed: CO3 2–, HCO3 – and OH–. The obtained results provided kinetics parameters for the transformation of carbonate into bicarbonate as a result of chemisorption of moisture and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

AB - This study analyzes the feasibility of valorizing industrial by-product, fly ash from a
thermal power plant as a partial replacement of mineral filler-limestone for the production of
self-compacting concrete (SCC). Three types of SCC mixtures with different portions of fly
ash and the reference mixture with limestone were designed. The synthesized SCCs in the
fresh state were examined for density, entrained air content, flowability (Slump flow, Slump
flow time (t500), V-funnel time (tv)), passing ability (L-box), and segregation resistance,
while hardened state testing included: density, compressive and flexural strength, static
modulus of elasticity, water permeability, resistance against freezing in the presence of deicing salt, and SEM analysis. Taking into account the obtained results it can be concluded
that the addition of fly ash has a positive impact on the concrete properties and that the
optimal content of fly ash is 20 % with respect to the total filler mass
