AB - The majority of the world's population is exposed to highly polluted air, with parameters
exceeding the World Health Organization's guidelines. In humans, this condition causes a wide
variety of diseases, leading to increased morbidity and mortality. The emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic, which is associated with a high transmission rate, exacerbated
the global situation. Aerosol particles containing the SARS-CoV-2 virons are the primary
transmission sources, and the risk of increased infection rates is certain indoors. Air purification
and bio-decontamination using techniques such as filtration and radiation play a significant role
in mitigating the virus's spread. These methods include HEPA filters, UV radiation, and ionization usage. However, these methods are costly and hard to implement in the indoor environment. Phytoremediation, an environmentally acceptable, cost-effective, and non-invasive air purification method, is becoming increasingly researched and developed. Indoor plants are considered natural filters since they can purify the air from pollutants and pathogens using methods of absorption, dilution, precipitation, and filtration depending on their morphology, growth state, and the presence of microbial communities. Plants can significantly reduce transmission of SARS-CoV-2 by affecting the lipid mantle and decreasing virus stability through modulating indoor relative humidity. Indoor air phytoremediation requires the proper selection of plant species and optimized growth conditions. This method is flexible in various environments without any need for special investments, with the potential addition of aesthetic value.

AB - For the purpose of improving a country's economy, urbanization, industrialization, and technical advancement all had detrimental environmental effects. One of the most serious consequences of the aforementioned phenomenon is air pollution. Various air pollutants emitted by natural and anthropogenic sources have been found to have negative effects on the environment and human health after prolonged exposure. Insufficient technologies are used to reduce air pollution as a result of problems in the industry sector, including high maintenance costs, machine failure, and expensive technical equipment. Technological innovations like phytoremediation, which is sustainable and friendly to the environment, are being used to improve outdoor air quality. Cost efficiency, convenience of in-situ application, eco-friendly treatment, and the ability to improve the aesthetic value of the nearby environment are advantages of phytoremediation over other conventional remediation approaches. Numerous studies in the field of the outdoor air phytoremediation have found highly beneficial results, but also challenges in applying the suggested method. Plant tolerance to pollutants, environmental parameters, plant-specific features, composition of air pollutants, uncertainty in plant-microbe interactions, and plant antagonism have all emerged as a result of the use of plants in outdoor air pollution remediation. To become a complementary or alternative tool for engineering-based remediation methods, the remedy process must be optimized with supplementary treatments or the best combination junction with other methods must be found.

Plant tolerance to pollutants, environmental parameters, plant-specific features, composition of air pollutants, uncertainty in plant-microbe interactions, and plant antagonism have all emerged as a result of the use of plants in outdoor air pollution remediation. To become a complementary or alternative tool for engineering-based remediation methods, the remedy process must be optimized with supplementary treatments or the best combination junction with other methods must be found.",

As a consequence of the above mentioned, they occur frequently in -domestic and organic waste. The handling and unselective application of pesticides may create an important waste fraction going to landfills, with the potential for transferring its residues

AB - Phenolic compounds are the most common secondary metabolites in vascular plants with
enormous structural diversities. Many phenolic compounds occur constitutively and determine the basic life processes of plants, but some stress factors contribute to increases in or de novo synthesis of phenolics, such as infection, plant tissue damage, UV radiation and elevated temperature. The interest in the extraction of phenolic compounds has been growing, due to their importance and possible positive effect on human health. Also, determination of phenolic compounds can be very helpful in estimation of pharmacological activity of medicinal plants. The recovery of these phenolic compounds from plants is mainly dependent on the method of extraction. The most utilized conventional methods are maceration, decoction, percolation, infusion, digestion, serial exhaustive extraction (SEE), and solid-liquid extraction (SLE) or Soxhlet extraction. These methods are mostly designated by utilizing larger volume of extraction solvents and manual procedures that are labor-intensive and mostly dependent on the investigator.
Prolonged exposure to high temperatures during conventional solvent extraction may cause degradation of the phenolic compounds in plant cells and thus reduce the maximum recovery yields of the compounds. According to some studies, greener novel extraction methods have been generated with the purpose of filling the missing gaps of conventional methods. Novel extraction technologies like accelerated solvent extraction (ASE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), shock wave-assisted extraction, pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), supercritical CO2 extraction (SC–CO2), and enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE) are getting more attention because of their shorter time and lower energy consumption, and higher extraction efficiency. These methods are also known to be environmentally friendly since they use smaller volumes of extraction solvents. The demand for new bioactive compounds will continue to encourage the search for innovative extraction techniques to achieve appreciable recovery yields from the plant materials.

AB - Pharmaceuticals are compounds of low molecular mass and specific properties with pronounced lipophilicity. This property enables significant bioavailability and activity of pharmaceuticals, due to which various effects and consequences on biota have been recorded. The introduction of pharmaceuticals into the environmental medium is possible in many ways. The primary pathways are inadequate disposal of pharmaceutical products, the use of supplements and drugs, ineffective treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater (i.e. concentration within activated sludge), and discharge of the effluent. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of landfill leachate at the global level identified the most commonly detected pharmaceuticals: Propyphenazone, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Gemfibrozil, and Carbamazepine. Qualitative analysis of leachate from unsanitary and sanitary landfill sites of solid municipal waste in the region of Vojvodina, Republic of Serbia, conducted during the winter period of 2019, determined the presence of 39 and 54 organic compounds, respectively. Propyphenazone, Gabapentin, and Benzenesulfonamide are the primary pharmaceuticals detected in the leachate of both landfill sites. The long-lasting release of pharmaceuticals into the environment, even in small concentrations, contributes to the formation of highly toxic compounds with a potentially adverse impact on the environment and human health.

AB - Shortly after the COVID-19 outbreak, most countries took active measures in response to the emergency. Frequent and proper handwashing is the most basic frontline defense against the spread of COVID-19 as an inexpensive, widely applicable response measure. The contribution of water supply, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) to the COVID-19 response has therefore been central, primarily by promoting good hygiene, and particularly, by ensuring frequent and

AB - Landfill leachate is a medium affected by a considerable number of factors, both within the landfill body (landfill age, the morphological composition of waste, temperature and moisture content, landfill fluid migration, waste treatment technologies before disposal, landfill body thickness, waste decomposition phases), and outside (meteorological parameters, with an emphasis on annual precipitation). The variable and almost unpredictable qualitative composition of leachate from municipal solid waste landfills, that often includes emerging substances, such as antibiotics and endocrine disruptors, as well as heavy metals, significantly affects the structure and diversity of the present microbiological communities. By implementing leachate sampling campaigns in the winter, spring, and autumn in 2019 at three non-sanitary (L1, L2, L3) and one sanitary (L4) municipal solid waste landfills in the region of Vojvodina, the presence of microorganisms Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Citrobacter freundii, Gram-negative bacteria from the family of Enterobacteriaceae, in the phylum Proteobacteria, were detected. Due to the frequent causing of urinary, extraintestinal, diarrheal, and respiratory infections, meningitis, colitis, sepsis, as well as high resistance to a range of antibiotics, Gram-negative bacteria may represent a potential risk to human and animal health, under specific exposure circumstances. In addition to the use of Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, and Citrobacter freundii as indicators of fecal contamination, the potential of the use of the mentioned bacteria as indicators of contamination of leachate with heavy metals and organic compounds, as well as the functionality and condition of municipal solid waste landfills.

AB - The concept of linking phytoremediation approaches and thermochemical biofuel production is a potential and promising pathway towards sustainable phytoremediation processes via contaminant-free bioenergy production and compound recovery from used contaminated biomass. Successful commercialisation of the products created from contaminated biomass can lead to increased incomes, job creation and improved environmental management. The use of these methods may
help reduce the prevalence of the water weeds in aquatic bodies and also help reduce the intensive use of wood fuel which usually leads to deforestation.

AB - Leachate samples were collected during the one year monitoring campaign, on municipal solid waste landfill in Novi Sad, Serbia. Determination of T, pH, EC, DO, BOD5, COD, NO2-N, NO3-N, NH4-N, Tot N, Tot P, B, SO4 2-, KMnO4, and cations of metals (Ca, Mg, Na, K, B, Cr, Ni, Zn, Fe, Cd, Pb and Al) was performed in order to evaluate the leachate pollution index (LPI) (Kumar and Alapat 2005). Due to the obtained values, only 7 parameters (pH, total dissolved solids, BOD5, COD, iron, zinc, and lead) were used for the purpose of calculation of LPI, which resulted in the reduced value of total pollution index. The obtained LPI value was 6,87 and was lower than value obtained within the previous study from the similar landfill site in Croatia (8,53) (Matešić et al., 2016). In addition the obtained LPI value is lower than 35 which indicates the low potential of contamination, as well as the relatively constant quality status of the leachate on landfill site in Novi Sad. The future monitoring programs should include all 18 prescribed parameters for LPI evaluation in order to obtain the overall value of the contamination index.

AB - Leachate from a non-sanitary municipal solid waste landfill (L) was collected to perform physico chemical and microbiological analyses. Obtained results indicate that landfill L was in methanogenic phase of waste decomposition and included the presence of two species of microorganisms: Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia. Additionally, a semi quantitative screening analysis of collected samples was performed using QP2010-Ultra GC-MS. Sixteen organic compounds were identified, of which the following five belonged to the group of pharmaceuticals: caffeine, 22-tricosenoic acid, 4-methylthiomorpholine-1, 1-dioxide, 2,6,10,14 hexadecatetraen-1-ol,3,7,11,15-tetramethyl-,acetate,(E,E,E)-, and 1,2-bis(trimethylsilyl)benzene. The software package STAN was used to conduct material and substance flow analysis. Scenario modeling was performed to assess the removal efficiency of selected technologies in terms of reducing the concentration of caffeine because of its well-known negative effects on humans and the environment. Technologies for leachate treatment, which were observed within the Scenario 1, included the hybrid wetland system, membrane bioreactor (MBR) and reverse osmosis (RO). The modeling results indicate the high removal efficiency of caffeine concentration (99.99%).
Rezultati

AB - Leachate is produced through complex chemical reactions, infiltration of the atmospheric water in the landfill body and the water contained in the waste, as well as through dissolution of waste pollutants. Due to its toxic composition, leachate pollutes soil and groundwater. It is very difficult to foresee real composition of landfill leachate due to dynamics of the processes occurring in the landfill body and the impact of a large number of variable factors. Qualitative composition of the leachate is characterized by pollutants that can be classified into four groups - soluble organic components, inorganic macrocomponents, heavy metals and xenobiotic organic compounds. The main objective of the conducted research was determination of the quality and organic profile of the leachate collected at non-sanitary municipal solid waste landfill in Novi Sad, by performing a screening analysis using GC-MS device.

AB - Leachate is produced by dissolving of various substances in water inside the landfill body. Contaminated leachate water can infiltrate into ground water and surrounding soil, causing significant water and soil pollution problems. Depending on the type of waste, presence of polluting
substances is the result of chemical and biological reactions within the landfill body. The analysis of
the leachate was carried out on two municipal solid waste landfills in Vojvodina region, Serbia, nonsanitary (L1) and sanitary (L2). The aim of the paper is to determine the basic physico-chemical and microbiological characteristics of water and to conduct screening analysis of the collected samples in order to determine the quality of leachate from both landfill sites and to conduct screening analyzes of the collected samples for the purpose of identifying the pharmaceuticals.

Cilj rada je da se odrede osnovne fizičko hemijske i mikrobiološke karakteristike vode i da se sprovede skrining analiza kolektovanih uzoraka kako bi se utvrdio kvalitet procedne vode na oba deponijska lokaliteta kao i da se sprovede skrining analiza kolektovanih uzoraka u cilju identifikacije farmaceutika., Leachate is produced by dissolving of various substances in water inside the landfill body.
The aim of the paper is to determine the basic physico-chemical and microbiological characteristics of water and to conduct screening analysis of the collected samples in order to determine the quality of leachate from both landfill sites and to conduct screening analyzes of the collected samples for the purpose of identifying the pharmaceuticals.",

AB - There are two possible cases concerning non-sanitary municipal solid waste landfills due to failure to meet requirements with respect to impermeability and thickness of geological barrier as well as absence of implementation and use of a waste and leachate management system, and also depending on type and the mineral composition of the geological barrier. In the first case, impermeable clay, kaolinite, is prevailing in the composition of the geological barrier the final outcome of which is the spillage of leachate into the volume of the deposited waste, as well as its outbreak on the surface of the landfill site. In the second case, permeable clay, smectite, is prevailing in the composition of geological barrier with dominant leachate infiltration into the ground flow. In accordance with the first case, using STAN software the substance flow analysis (SFA) was carried out, of cadmium primarily, within three scenarios. Efficacy of remediation of the landfill site soil contaminated with leachate from the aspect of heavy metal reduction, focused primarily on cadmium, using in-situ and ex-situ systems, was presented within Scenario 1 and Scenario 2. Possibility and efficacy of direct treatment of leachate in a corresponding plant for its processing, in case of implementing and using the leachate management system, was presented within Scenario 3. Efficacy of cadmium flow reduction accomplished within Scenario 1, Scenario 2 and Scenario 3 amounts to 99.04 %, 55 % and 99.2 %, respectively. Prevention of landfill site contamination with leachate using the system of its management is an optimum option and a desirable practice, while in the case of the already existing contamination of the landfill site and its immediate environment, using in-situ system of landfill site soil remediation, based on achieved results, high efficacy was achieved contrary to use of the ex-situ system.
Efikasnost redukcije toka kadmijuma ostvarena u okviru Scenarija 1 iznosi 99.04 %, u okviru Scenarija 2 iznosi 55 %, dok u okviru Scenarija 3 iznosi 99.2 %, respektivno. Prevencija kontaminacije deponijskog lokaliteta procednim vodama primenom sistema za upravljanje istim predstavlja optimalnu opciju i poželjnu praksu, dok u slučaju već postojeće kontaminacije deponijskog lokaliteta i neposredne okoline, primenom in-situ sistema remedijacije zemljišta deponijskog lokaliteta, na osnovu dobijenih rezultata, ostvaruje se visoka efikasnost, nasuprot primeni ex-situ sistema.

AB - The legislation of the EU and the Republic of Serbia in the area of municipal solid waste landfill leachate management is not strictly defined. It was systematized through an integrative approach. A complete picture of leachate management was formed by applying relevant legislation in waste management and water management. After completing systematization, the correlation of EU and Serbian legislation was reviewed and accentuated. Finally, advantages of implementing the formed approach were highlighted, at the level of both the EU and the Republic of Serbia. The application of relevant legal documents will allow the establishment of an efficient monitoring system in the period after closing landfill sites, data collecting from the aspect of qualitative and quantitative leachate composition, thereby contributing to the perception of generation and morphology of leachate in this period, and the consideration of technical-technological difficulties in reaching strict limit values for discharging treated leachate into water recipients.
AB - Zakonska regulativa Evropske Unije i Republike Srbije u oblasti upravljanja procednim vodama komunalnih deponija čvrstog otpada nije strogo definisana.

AB - The paper presents the results of the treatment of landfill leachate by applying the method of phytoremediation using hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes). The leachate was sampled from the Municipal Landfill in Novi Sad, while the common water hyacinth was purchased from the Nursery of flowers and conifers in Ugrinovci. During the research, we monitored the removal efficiency of four heavy metals, i.e., chromium, cadmium, nickel and zinc. Despite the presence and the metabolic processes of Hirudinea, as well as the accelerated degradation of the applied biomass, significant removal of heavy metals from the treated leachate has been achieved. After completion of the experiment, it was concluded that the removal efficiency of chromium is 81%, cadmium 80%, nickel 62% and zinc 80%

AB - In existing review, assessment of leachates on specific sanitary landfills in Republic of Serbia is carried out. Assessment is based on five landfill sites located in different territorial regions of Republic of Serbia and four main factors in accordance with available data. Landfill sites that are taken into consideration are: Regional sanitary municipal solid waste landfill „Duboko“ near Užice, Sanitary municipal solid waste landfill „Meteris“ Vranje, „Regional sanitary municipal solid waste landfill“ in Kikinda, Regional sanitary landfill „Srem-Mačva“in Sremska Mitrovica and Municipal landfill „Aleksandrovačka bara“ Subotica- „Regional landfill“ Ltd. Subotica. Factors which are being represented in this study are waste composition, process of waste, age of landfills, meteorological specifications typical for regional areas of concern. The volume of decomposition of solid waste organic components noticeably affects on filtrate production variations, while waste treatment method selection considerably depends on its composition, whereby accomplishing integration of these two factors. Meteorological parameters, primarily precipitation, affect on intensity of leachate generation, while variations in production of landfill filtrate which are depending on the age of landfill reflect in greater generation intensity in the beginning of landfill life cycle and decreasing throughout its life-cycle. Factors like waste density and oxygen consumption are being considered, but due to lack of data, they are not taken as factors of primary interest. The main goal of this study is research of different factors which primarily effect on intensity and variations of leachates generation quantity of observed landfills on Republic of Serbia territory.
