AB - The anodic behaviour of galvanically plated ruthenium-iridium coatings on titanium was investigated. The dependence of the Tafel slopes and the stability of the coatings for the oxygen evolution reaction in sulphuric acid on the electrode composition was established. A change in the Tafel slope from 33 to 90 mV per decade on going from pure ruthenium to pure iridium was found. The presence of 40% Ir in the coating yielded 300 times higher stability in comparison with the coating of pure ruthenium. In addition, a square-wave pulsing between -0.25 and 1.25 V vs. the saturated calomel electrode produced an oxide film with electrochromic properties which were directly related to the charge enhancement factor of the grown oxide.

AB - There is practical interest in the use of titanium as a cathode material in brine electrolysis processes. The overvoltage of hydrogen evolution on titanium is, however, very high and, at the same time, hydrogen penetrates the bulk of the metal. Here, a new type of catalytically active coating has been applied on the surface of titanium in order to overcome these problems. The coating consists of a mixture of the thermal decomposition products of lanthanum chloride and sodium molybdate. The coating has been tested for 18 months of continuous operation. No change in the overvoltage gain (of 0.4 V at 3 kA m-2, as compared with pure titanium) nor change in the properties of the bulk metal have been noticed during this period.

AB - Electrolytic cells consisting of mercury electrodes immersed into pure aqueous sulphuric acid solution (ideally polarizable electrodes) and in the one containing Ti3+/Ti4+ redox couple (presence of a faradaic process) were shown to resonate with an induction coil connected in series when a.c. of appropriate frequency is applied across the circuit. The parameters of this faradaic resonance, ωr (resonance frequency) and Ar (amplification factor at resonance) depend on the properties of the system such as the concentration of the redox couple and the electrode potential, as well as on the amplitude of the applied a.c. Higher harmonics have been detected even with the lowest applied amplitude (1 mV). A detailed theoretical consideration has been given to the expected resonance properties of an electrode based on purely activation controlled electrode process as well as of the one in which some diffusional effects become significant, for overpotential changes in the linear domain. This was done in an attempt to assess the value of faradaic resonance measurements for studying kinetic properties of electrochemical cells.
