AB - The importance of producing thermoset polymers from natural resources has grown due to environmental concerns. Implementing the biorefinery concept is vital for replacing petroleum-based raw materials and transferring to cleaner technologies. Unsaturated polyester resins (UPRs) are a significant class of thermosetting polymers, with a wide range of properties gained from a
considerable number of materials that are used for their synthesis. They can be used as pure resins or resins reinforced with suitable fillers in composite material production, which is the focus of this research. Generally, UPRs consist of two main components, prepolymer and reactive diluents, commercially both of which are commonly derived from petroleum. So, it is important to find an adequate bio-based alternative not only for styrene as a reactive diluent, but also for monomers that are used for prepolymer synthesis. Many bio-based monomers (propylene glycol, isosorbide, neopentyl glycol) and reactive diluents (vinyl levulinate, butanediol dimethacrylate, dimethyl itaconate) were investigated in formulating a bio-based UPR. Alongside this, many different bio-based fillers (hemp fibres, spent coffee grounds, rosehip seed flour) were also examined, to conclusively obtain a fully bio-based composite material. Sole introduction of bio-based raw
materials is insufficient for proper implementation of the biorefinery principle. It is equally important that the final formulation of the obtained composite material demonstrates that it is environmentally and economically feasible. The quality and market price of the bio-based composite material must be at least be comparable to or better than those of a product from a conventional process in order to be competitive.

AB - The present study reports the development of the lab-scale procedure for extraction of pectin from the waste industrial apple pomace using deep eutectic solvents (DES) as extraction medium. Compared with conventional extraction solvents, DES have attracted considerable attention due to the fact that they not only are eco-friendly, non-toxic, and biodegradable organic compounds but also have a low cost, being easy to produce in the own laboratory. The research included screening study that covered extraction using different DES based on choline chloride ([Ch]Cl) as hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA), and organic acids as hydrogen bond donors (HBD). The applied HBA:HBD molar ratio was 1:2. The pectin was extracted by employing solid-liquid (SLE) and ultrasound assisted extraction (UAE). The DES based on [Ch]Cl and lactic acid turned to be most promising in terms of obtained extraction yields, that reached 35% when applying UAE. It has been shown that structure of HBD plays a major role with its hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity
influencing the number of established bonds. The HBD with lower amount of carbon molecules and higher number of hydroxyl and carboxylic groups formed DES that are more efficient at extracting pectin. Hidotopy study showed significant influence of water on pectin yield due to more prominent hydrogen interaction established in the system. Depending on the type of DES, the highest yields were obtained at 30-50 wt% of water, while an additional increase in water content resulted in reduced yield. The structural properties of extracted pectin, including esterification degree, was determined using FTIR spectroscopy.

AB - Modern society are faced with lot of challenges in the treatment of many diseases, especiallywith serious ones such as cancer. Safer and more efficient treatment of the cancer patients are maingoals which researchers are aiming. One of the good approaches can be drug delivery systems.Still, a lot of anticancer drugs are poorly water-soluble and their encapsulation and controlled releasecan be quite challenging. Present study is focused to improve drug delivery system based onhydrophilic poly(methacrylic acid) and amphiphilic casein with encapsulated poorly water-solublecaffeine, which has been developed through our previous research. The hydrogels with 1.6mol% ofcrosslinker and 100% of neutralization degree of methacrylic acid are synthetized (PMAC-100N-4M). The swelling process of the PMAC-100N-4M hydrogels and caffeine release are analyzed intwo environments which simulate human stomach and intestines. It is also investigated how thechange in the encapsulated caffeine weight and the addition of liposomes with encapsulated caffeine, affect swelling degree of the PMAC-100N-4M hydrogels and release of caffeine. The resultsshow that controlled release of caffeine is improved, therefore overall therapy can be enhanced.

AB - Fruits are the most utilized commodities among all horticultural crops. They are consumed raw, minimally processed, due to their nutrients and health-promoting compounds. With the growing population and changing diet habits, the production and processing of fruits, have increased very significantly to fulfil the increasing demands. Significant losses and waste in the fresh and processing industries are becoming a serious nutritional, economical, and environmental problem. The fruit waste is composed mainly of seed, skin, rind, and pomace, containing good sources of potentially valuable bioactive compounds. The apple pomace is rich in pectic substances and represents important raw material for pectin production all around the world. For example, the portion of residual apple pomace makes about 13 % of the total waste material and on the basis of dry mass, it contains 10–15% pectin. Currently, it is either used for animal feeding or is disposed of as an industrial waste. The extraction of pectin is usually performed using mineral acids, yielding a reasonable quantity of product while also saving time in the process. Even though pectin has various applications in the food manufacturing industry, consumers have a negative perception upon learning that strong acids are used in pectin extraction. Furthermore, high acidity speeds up corrosion and rust formation of the apparatus, leading to water pollution which contributes to environmental concerns.
The present study reports the lab-scale procedure for extraction of pectin from the waste industrial apple pomace using deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as extraction medium. DESs turned to be an excellent choice for extraction because they are non-volatile at room temperature and non-toxic, while the majority of DESs are water-miscible depending on their components. The process consisted of the processing of apples, employing milling, enzymatic digestion and pressing. The further analysis included temperature and ultrasound assisted extraction and purification of pectin as well as the detailed physicochemical analysis of the obtained product. The applied procedure has resulted in satisfactory yields under mild extraction conditions, optimal extraction time and industrially preferred properties of the isolated pectin.

AB - Emerging efforts in the field of biocomposites established novel combinations of biobased matrix materials and reinforcements, as well as the optimization of curing conditions, to enhace their properties and expand their range od applications. The curing conditions of nanocellulose reinforced biobased unsaturated polyester reins (UPR) based on itaconic acid and it derivatives were examined in this work. Since the curing process of biobased UPR required the presence of both initiatior and an activator, the optimization was conducted in two phases. The first phase investigated the effect of different concentrations of an activator, cobalt octoate, (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mass%) with a constant concentration of an initiator, a mixture of dibenzoyl peroxide (DBP) and methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP) (DBP to MEKP ratio 1.5:1.0, 2.5 mass% total). The ratios of DBP and MEKP were varied in the second phase of experiments in the following manner: 2.5:0, 1.75:0.75, 0.75:1.75 and 0:2.5 (keeping the total initiator mass% of 2.5). The effect of the different curing conditions on the UPR properties was monitored via the gel content analysis and the uniaxial tensile test. It was shown that the increase in activator concentration led to the decrease in gel content, tensile strenght and elongation at break. On the other hand, the increase in dibenzoyl peroxide concentration in the initiator mixture revealed enhanced overall mechanical properties. The optimal curing conditions were found to be 0.5 mass% of activator, and 1.75:0.75 DBP to MEKP ratio in the initiator mixture. Thereby obtained UPR biocomposite showed a significant increase in elastic attributes suggesting that these materials can be used where high elasticity is needed.

AB - This study reports successful free radical synthesis of pH-sensitive hydrogels based on poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) by using new green initiation system based on vitamin C and hydrogen peroxide (VC/H2O2). The application of proposed initiation system provides many advantages, above all cost effective and eco-friendly synthesis which can be carried out under ambient conditions. The obtained PMAA hydrogels are analyzed by various technics: Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and by using single compression tests. In line with the intended application, PMAA hydrogels are further investigated in terms of their potential to be used for encapsulation and controlled release of active substances such as antioxidant phenolic compounds. To keep it green, the total phenolic compounds (TPC) were obtained from orange peels waste by applying ultrasonic-assisted extraction and deep eutectic solvent (DES) based on glycerol:urea:water. The TPC were successfully encapsulated into the PMAA hydrogels which were previously estimated to have the optimal mechanical and swelling properties with respect to the final application. The swelling behavior of the PMAA hydrogels and controlled release of the TPC were tested as a function of the various synthesis parameters in several media with different pH values. It was shown that TPC can be released in control manner in medium which simulates the environment in human intestines, finally resulting in enhanced bioavailability of TPC, reduced side effects and improved therapeutic effects.

AB - High concentrations of hydrophobic MFI zeolite (26.0–51.3 wt%) were successfully embedded in poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) network in simple, one-pot synthesis of PMAA-MFI composite hydrogels. The effects of zeolite concentration regarding pure PMAA xerogel, for all of the investigated properties (primary structural parameters, morphological properties, water swelling ability, thermal degradation mechanism and stability, and mechanical properties) were determined and discussed. The PMAA-MFI composite hydrogels had remarkably higher density than PMAA xerogel (1660/1420 kg m−3), higher crosslinking density (29/1.0 × 10−4), improved mechanics in the dry and swollen state (up to 4.9 times higher storage modulus) and lower swelling degree (42/420 g g−1), average molar mass between the network crosslinks (3.6/110 × 104 g mol−1), and distance between the macromolecular chains (64/710 nm). Despite high zeolite concentration, the composites kept porous hydrogel structure with uniformly dispersed zeolite particles. FTIR spectra disclosed the existence of functional groups of PMAA network and MFI zeolite that interacted mutually and led to increased crosslinking density. The effect of zeolite concentration on the thermal degradation mechanism was established. The composition-properties correlations were determined and described by the adequate linear or power law equations revealing the additive nature of the composites and the fractal structure of the networks. These correlations enable the achievement of desired properties by simple adjustment of the initial composition, i.e. zeolite concentration. Therefore, this work presents the base for further development of tailor-made PMAA-MFI composite hydrogels aimed for specific application.

AB - Pectin and pectin derived oligosaccharides can be obtained from waste apple pomace(biomass). Traditional method for pectin extraction involves use of diluted mineral acids atelevated temperatures, with yields of about 10 to 15%. As an alternative to conventionalmethods, the use of eutectic solvents is increasing because of their superior propertieswhen it comes to targeted extraction of certain components from biomass. The aim of thispaper is ultrasound assisted extraction of pectin from waste apple pomace using cholinechloride based eutectic solvents and lactic acid. Properties of extracted products wereexamined using FTIR spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry.

AB - Materials sensitive to external stimuli are recognized as safe and effective tool able to respond to specific demands in the therapy of various diseases. Thermo sensitive hydrogels based on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (P(NIPAAM)) are widely investigated for targeted drug delivery. Still, the abundance of the stimuli in the human body often requires more than one responsive group able to act simultaneously to achieve optimal therapeutic effects. Due to its pH sensitivity and bio-based production, crotonic acid (CA) was a monomer of choice for preparation of eco-friendly copolymer hydrogels based on NIPAAM and CA (P(NIPAAMcoCA)), which turned to be thermo and pH sensitive at the same time. The potential of the P(NIPAAMcoCA) system for encapsulation and controlled release of drugs with different solubility was investigated engaging water-soluble lidocaine hydrochloride and poorly water-soluble ibuprofen as model drugs. The hydrogels were characterized by various technics: FTIR, DSC, SEM and single compressive tests, while swelling behavior and controlled release of the drugs were analyzed with respect to the CA amount in two environments with different pH values at 25 °C and 37 °C. It was demonstrated that due to their dual responsiveness the P(NIPAAMcoCA) hydrogels have potential for controlled release of drugs with different solubility.

AB - Drug delivery system is an amazing tool which is widely used for drugprotection and its controlled release in order to enhance drug bioavailability, reduce side effects and therefore to improve overall therapy. Hydrogels havebeen attracted great attention as drug carriers due to their great physicochemicalproperties, similarity to the living tissues and biocompatibility. One group ofpH sensitive hydrogels are based on poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA). Thesenon-toxic hydrogels are used as drug delivery system because they swell asa response to the change in pH of external environment and drug is beingreleased during the process. In present study, in order to improve the control ofdrug release rate, caffeine was encapsulated in liposomes which were furtherembedded into PMC hydrogel (PMCL). It was investigated how the change inneutralization degree of methacrylic acid affect the swelling degree of PMCLhydrogels and caffeine release in two environments at 37 °C for 24 h: 0.1 Mhydrochloride acid (pH 1) and phosphate buffer with pH value of 6.8 (pH 6.8), asa simulation of pH environment in human stomach and intestines, respectively.Obtained results show that PMCL hydrogels have great potential for controlledrelease of poorly water-soluble drugs in human intestines.

AB - The scope of the present study was to prepare fully bio-based unsaturated polyester resins (UPRs) with comparable properties to the commercial formulations. The focus was set on the determination of the optimal prepolymer formulation using the same set of diacids (itaconic and succinic acid) and different diols (propylene glycol, isosorbide and neopentyl glycol) or its equimolar mixtures, keeping the fixed molar ratio of 1:1:2.1 in all feed compositions. Instead of commonly used styrene, bio-based dimethyl itaconate was used as a reactive diluent (RD). The rheology of the obtained resins was studied in detail. The effect of the used diol on structural (FTIR), thermal (DSC), thermomechanical (DMA), and mechanical (tensile) properties was explained. The properties of UPRs were found to be highly dependent on the diol used in the prepolymer formulation. The UPR with an equimolar ratio of propylene glycol and neopentyl glycol was shown to be the most promising candidate to compete with the commercial petroleum-based resins.

AB - Replacing styrene with biobased monomers to produce fully biobased unsaturated polyester
resins (UPRs) turned out to be quite a challenging task. Styrene has been recognized as a hazardous and a potentially carcinogenic substance for human health. Using dimethyl itaconate as an alternative reactive diluent to styrene, which can be obtained from renewable resources, enables low viscosity for easy manipulation of mentioned UPRs. Fully biobased UPRs in question were based on itaconic acid, succinic acid, and propylene glycol, which were then diluted with dimethyl itaconate. Having in mind that UPRs can be used as a matrix for composite materials, this paper examines the effect of different weight ratios of spent coffee grounds as a filler. To determine the application of thus obtained composite materials, characterization consisted of examining mechanical properties based on viscosity measurements, uniaxial stretching experiments, FTIR spectroscopy and gel content analysis.

AB - Most used raw materials for production of unsaturated polyester resins are obtained from
petroleum. Transitioning to biobased unsaturated polyester resins is a complex, costly and time consuming process, but it is necessary to lower the dependence of petroleum. Unsaturated polyester
resins are the most used type of resin as a matrix for composite materials. Natural fillers in these
materials can provide several benefits as they are abundant, recyclable, and non-toxic. Synthesized
unsaturated polyester consisted of itaconic acid, succinic acid, propylene glycol and neopentyl
glycol, while dimethyl itaconate was used as a reactive diluent. In this paper we examined two
different natural fillers, rosehip flour and hemp fibres, both of which were varied in weight ratios.
Characterization of obtained composite materials consisted of examining mechanical properties by
uniaxial tensile test, FTIR spectroscopy and gel content analysis.

AB - Drug delivery system is an amazing tool which is widely used for drug protection and its controlled
release in order to enhance drug bioavailability, reduce side effects and therefore to improve overall
therapy. Hydrogels have been attracted great attention as drug carriers due to their great
physicochemical properties, similarity to the living tissues and biocompatibility. One group of pH
sensitive hydrogels are based on poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA). These non-toxic hydrogels are
used as drug delivery system because they swell as a response to the change in pH of external
environment and drug is being released during the process. In our previous research we modified
hydrophilic PMAA with amphiphilic casein (PMC) and enabled in that manner the encapsulation of
poorly water-soluble caffein and its controlled release. Casein is non-toxic, pH sensitive and
biocompatible natural polymer which improved mechanical properties of PMAA, as well. In
present study, in order to improve the control of drug release rate, caffeine was encapsulated in
liposomes which were further embedded into PMC hydrogel (PMCL). It was investigated how the
change in neutralization degree of methacrylic acid affect the swelling degree of PMCL hydrogels
and caffeine release in two environments at 37 ℃ for 24 h: 0.1 M hydrochloride acid (PH 1) and
phosphate buffer with pH value of 6.8 (PH 6.8), as a simulation of pH environment in human
stomach and intestines, respectively. Obtained results show that PMCL hydrogels have great
potential for controlled release of poorly water-soluble drugs in human intestines.

AB - Processing of waste by-products of agricultural origin generated by different kinds of
industries can entail environmental problems. Waste apple pomace (biomass) could play
an important role in pectin production, offering economic advantages and decreasing the
environmental impact. Pectin and pectin derived oligosaccharides have many
applications in food and pharmaceutical products as gelling agents and stabilizers.
Traditional method for pectin extraction involved the use of diluted mineral acids at
elevated temperatures, with yields of about 10 to 15%. Because of the relatively long
period of exposure to direct heating, thermal degradation of pectin often occurs in this
process. The use of deep eutectic solvents could be the solution to this problem. Deep
eutectic solvents have shown superior properties when it comes to targeted extraction of
certain components from biomass, while providing mild conditions when compared to
conventional methods. The aim of this paper is thermal extraction of pectin from waste
apple pomace using choline chloride based deep eutectic solvents combined with
different acids (oxalic acid, lactic acid and malic acid). Properties of extracted products
were examined using FTIR spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry.

AB - Hydrogels are promising materials for biomedical applications due to highly hydrated, porous, permeable structure with possibility to accommodate living cells, drugs, or bioactive factors. In this paper, we reported poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA)/gelatin IPN hydrogels, synthesized by free-radical polymerization, with adjustable mechanical, structural, physicochemical, and biological characteristics. The influence of methacrylic acid (MAA), gelatin, and cross-linker in the precursor solution on hydrogels properties was investigated. The increasing concentration of MAA, gelatin, and cross-linker led to better mechanical properties, lower porosity, and water content. The compressive mechanical properties of hydrogels were significantly better in comparison to a single-network PMAA hydrogel, while the obtained compressive strength values up to 16 MPa were comparable with tough hydrogels. The increasing concentration of MAA and cross-linker reduced fatigue resistance and degradability, while the increase in gelatin content acted in the opposite way. Swelling tests in different pH conditions demonstrated strong pH-sensibility of the hydrogels, which was more pronounced as MAA concentration was higher, and gelatin and cross-linker concentrations were lower. In addition, the hydrogels strongly promoted the proliferation of human periodontal ligament stem cells and MRC-5 cells as assayed by MTT assay.

AB - pH- and magnetic-sensitive hybrid hydrogels based on poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA), nanocellulose (NC), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and magnetite particles (MN) were prepared as ibuprofen delivery system. NC was isolated from wood waste material and added to highly hydrophilic PMAA in order to improve the mechanical properties of PMAA and enable the encapsulation of poorly water-soluble ibuprofen. CMC was added in order to stabilize magnetite particles. The pH- and magnetic-sensitivity of the obtained hybrid hydrogels (originated from PMAA and MN, respectively) provided targeted delivery and controlled release of ibuprofen. Hybrid hydrogels were characterized by various technics: FTIR, SEM, XRD, VSM, the modified Faraday method, photon correlation spectroscopy and by using single compression tests. The swelling behavior of hybrid hydrogels and cumulative ibuprofen release were investigated depending on wt% of NC and MN in two media which were simulating pH environments in human stomach and intestines. The swelling degree of hybrid hydrogels and the percent of cumulative ibuprofen release decreased with the increase in wt% of NC. The same was found for increasing wt% of MN. Ibuprofen release kinetics was investigated with Korsmeyer–Peppas model. The obtained results showed that the prepared green dual responsive hybrid hydrogels were excellent candidates for the controlled release of ibuprofen, showing that the release kinetic can be easily tuned by changing only one hydrogel component.

AB - Nowadays, unsaturated polyester resins (UPR) are mainly obtained from non-renewable resources. The ever-increasing regulations and the continuous demand for more sustainability have led to extensive research towards more environmentally suitable alternatives to petroleum-based materials. However, one of the main disadvantages of bio-based UPR is their relatively high viscosity compared to petrochemical ones. In order to overcome this drawback, in this work, we investigated the possibility to lower the resin viscosity utilizing a mixture of dimethyl itaconate (DMI) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) as a reactive diluent. The effect of the DMI and MMA ratio on resin rheological properties was investigated. The optimal curing parameters were determined and all UPRs had a high gel content, which was shown to be dependent on the DMI and MMA ratio in the formulation. Furthermore, thermomechanical and mechanical properties of the resulting network were also found to be affected by the used reactive diluent mixture. A small substitution of DMI by MMA proved to be advantageous since it offers lower resin viscosity and improved mechanical properties.

AB - Carriers for targeted delivery and controlled release of poorly water-soluble active
substances (PWSAS) are facing three challenges: (a) the encapsulation issues, (b)
limitations of PWSAS water solubility, and (c) burst drug release which can be
pharmacologically dangerous and economically inefficient. The present study
brings a novel strategy for encapsulation and controlled release of PWSAS—
caffeine in concentrations which are higher than its maximal water solubility
without the possibility of burst effect. The modification of hydrophilic carrier
based on poly(methacylic acid) was done using casein and liposomes. To further
increase the maximal caffeine loading inside the carrier nicotinamide was used.
The release study of the encapsulated PWSAS was elaborated with respect to morphology
of the carriers and interactions that could be established between its
structural components. The carriers swelling and the release of caffeine and nicotinamide
were also investigated depending on caffeine concentration, the presence
of different liposomal formulations and the volume ratio of liposomal formulation,
in three media with different pH simulating the path of the carrier through the
human gastrointestinal tract. The synthesized carriers are promising candidates
for encapsulation of PWSAS in concentrations which are higher than its maximal
water solubility and for the targeted delivery of those dosages.

AB - pH sensitive, nontoxic, and biocompatible poly(methacrylic) acid (PMAA) based soft networks have been extensively used in the design of systems for targeted drug delivery. Still, their highly hydrophilic nature limits their potential to be used as a carrier of poorly water-soluble substances. With the aim to overcome this limitation, the present study details a new approach for modification of PMAA based carriers using two amphiphilic components: casein and liposomes. The FTIR analysis revealed structural features of each component as well as the synergetic effect that originated from the formation of specific interactions. Namely, hydrophobic interactions between the poorly water-soluble model drug (caffeine) and casein enabled caffeine encapsulation and controlled release, while addition of liposomes ensured better control of the release rate. The morphological properties of the carriers, swelling behavior, and release kinetics of caffeine were investigated depending on the variable synthesis parameters (neutralization degree of methacrylic acid, concentration of caffeine, presence/absence of liposomes) in two different media simulating the pH environment of human intestines and stomach. The data obtained from in vitro caffeine release were correlated and analyzed in detail using several mathematical models, indicating significant potential of investigated carriers for targeted delivery and controlled release of poorly water-soluble substances.

AB - The design of complex polymeric materials with predefined task-specific properties meets challenging issues: to establish synthesis-structure-properties relationship, as well as to understand the arrangement and interactions of the involved components. Hybrid networks of protein (casein) and polyelectrolyte (poly(methacrylic acid)) were synthesized and their swelling, dynamic-mechanical and morphological properties were investigated as functions of the neutralization degree of methacrylic acid and the concentrations of caseinate and crosslinker. The domination of different interactions between components led to diverse forms of casein macromolecules- from micelles to unfold chains. That resulted in very different structures and thereby properties of derived hybrid networks: from porous unswellable to highly swellable and reinforced ones. A great opportunity to easily modulate the final characteristics of the reported hybrid system to fit the need of specific application just through the change of one synthesis parameter was thereby demonstrated.

Also, a possibility to control swelling kinetic and equilibrium swelling degree (SDeq) of hydrogels, by altering the degree of neutralization of the precursor (DN) was examined. Methods. Composite hydrogels, based on HA and poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA), were synthesized by free-radical polymerization with different DN. Theoretical content of HA in synthesized composites was 60 wt %. Composites were synthesized by methods of dynamic mechanical analysis and scanning electron microscopy. SDeq and swelling kinetic were examined in distilled water and simulated body fluid. Results. Morphological observations revealed uniform distribution and strong bond of spherical HA particles within the polymer matrix. Swelling analyses demonstrated that SDeq is directly proportional to DN, while rheological examinations indicated inverse proportion between DN and storage modulus, but due to the HA particles inclusion, mechanical properties of composites were significantly better compared to monophasic PMAA hydrogels. Significance. Simple method of synthesis of composite hydrogels with high content of filler nanoparticles is presented. Incorporation of HA nanoparticles significantly improved mechanical properties of hydrogels, while at the same time was demonstrated a possibility to control swelling kinetic by influencing the DN.
Svi sintetisani kompoziti sadrže visok maseni udeo HA (~60 mas %). .
