AB - As electrode materials, graphene and its derivatives have been the subject of extensive investigation. Graphene has been modified by various types of materials in an effort to enhance its electrode qualities even more. This work sought to understand how the precursor to graphene affected the electrochemical characteristics of the final product and its potential use, unaltered, in the creation of sensors for nitrophenol derivatives. A set of samples of graphene produced using a radiofrequency (RF) thermal plasma jet are presented. Precursors for the creation of graphene included six basic organic compounds: alkanes, alcohols, carboxylic acids, and aldehydes. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was used to carry out the electrochemical characterization. Square wave voltammetry (SWV) was used to assess the graphene’s electroanalytical performance for the simultaneous detection of 3-nitrophenol and 4-nitrophenol. A graphene sample made from methane had the maximum current response. Using as synthesised methane-originated graphene, two nitrophenol derivatives were successfully detected simulta neously in a concentration range of 10 μM to 500 μM. The type of oxygen functional groups and the edge/plane ratio in the produced graphene were shown to have a significant impact on the graphene electroactivity. Future research ought to focus on improving synthetic conditions in order to enhance desirable characteristics.

AB - Urea-based graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is thermally exfoliated at 500 °C in the airatmosphere, and nano-carbon nitride (n-C3N4) is obtained. While optical properties are assessedusing UV/Vis DR spectroscopy, structural and morphological parameters of two materials areobtained using XRD, TEM, and FTIR. Flat-band potentials were determined from Mott-Schottkyplots, and combined with corresponding band-gap energies, to estimate conduction and valenceband potentials of both materials. Photocatalytic efficacy of both semiconductors in photocatalyticdegradation of three textile dyes under simulated solar light irradiation is compared, with theconclusion that n-C3N4 expressed higher photocatalytic ability in the studied systems. Finally, inorder to provide reusability of the semiconductors in multiple consecutive photocatalytic cycles, both photocatalysts were drop-coated on the jute-based post industrial waste. Reusability of juten-C3N4 material is probed in three consecutive photocatalytic cycles, and the obtained resultsshowed that this material can have a future in solving real-life environmental problems.

AB - Bentonite clay has shown to be a versatile material that can be easily modified and applied as
an adsorbent, (electro)catalyst, or as a support for (electro)catalyst. The carbon-clay composites combine a relatively high specific surface area of the clay with a good electrical conductivity of carbon. In this paper, the effect of the applied carbonization procedure on the electrochemical properties of bentonite-carbon composite was investigated. Chitosan-modified bentonite was carbonized by conventional thermal degradation and by the hydrothermal procedure. The electrochemical characterization was performed by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The response to Fe(CN)63-/4- and Ru(NH3)62+/3+ redox probe showed that the thermally treated sample shows somewhat higher electrochemical activity and lower charge-transfer resistance. However, an investigation of composites activity toward
minophenazone, performed in the pH range 3-9 showed that the hydrothermally obtained sample shows higher activity at pH above 5, while the thermally obtained sample was more active at pH below 5.

AB - Nowadays, environmental pollution caused by antibiotics attracts extensive attention.
Adsorption has been successfully applied in the treatment of wastewater loaded by
pharmaceutics, while diverse natural and eco-friendly materials have been recognized as
promising adsorbents. In this work smectite clay from Bogovina (Serbia) and biopolymer
chitosan (derived from waste of crustaceans) were used as eco-friendly starting materials for
the adsorbent synthesis. The combination of transition metal, carbon materials, and clay
minerals represents a useful way to develop functional nanocomposites with benefiting
synergistic properties of all components.
Simple, one-step hydrothermal procedure conducted at 180 ℃ for 24h was applied for
synthesis of cobalt/smectite/chitosan-derived carbon (H_Co/C-S) nanocomposite. The sample
was characterized using XRPD, FTIR, and low-temperature N2-physisorption analysis and
tested as adsorbent of ciprofloxacin (CPX). The effects of temperature, initial pH, and CPX
concentration on the adsorption process were investigated. The adsorption results were fitted
by Langmuir, Freundlich, and Sips adsorption isotherms. Additionally, CPX adsorption was
described by appropriate kinetics and thermodynamic parameters. It was found that
temperature increase had the beneficial effect on CPX adsorption, while investigated
adsorbent was efficient in a broad pH range (4-8). The H_Co/C-S adsorbent was found to be
efficient in the removal of CPX antibiotic.

synthesis of cobalt/smectite/chitosan-derived carbon (H_Co/C-S) nanocomposite. The sample
was characterized using XRPD, FTIR, and low-temperature N2-physisorption analysis and
tested as adsorbent of ciprofloxacin (CPX).
The H_Co/C-S adsorbent was found to be
efficient in the removal of CPX antibiotic.",

AB - The employment of compounds obtained from natural sources to produce adsorbents and their application in the elimination of antibiotics from industrial effluents have gained significant attention because of their low production cost and sustainability. Herein, chitosan (biopolymer) and smectite (abundant clay mineral) were used for the low-cost and eco-friendly synthesis of a new type of adsorbent. A low-energy-consumption hydrothermal process was applied to the synthesis of the chitosan-derived carbon–smectite nanocomposite with cobalt (H_Co/C-S). The produced nanocomposite was characterized using elemental analysis, ICP-OES, XRPD, low-temperature N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, FTIR analysis, and point of zero charge. H_Co/C-S (SBET = 0.73 m2 g−1, d001 = 1.40 nm, pHPZC = 5.3) was evaluated as a ciprofloxacin adsorbent in aqueous solution. Experimental data were fitted with different kinetic models and interpreted by selected adsorption isotherms. The pseudo-second-order model was found to be the most appropriate, while ciprofloxacin adsorption onto H_Co/C-S was best described by the Redlich–Peterson isotherm (R2 = 0.985). The maximum adsorption capacity of H_Co/C-S, according to the Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.977), was 72.3 mg g−1. Desorption and thermodynamic studies were performed. The obtained results indicated that the new hierarchically designed H_Co/C-S has promising potential to be further tested for application in real wastewater treatment.

AB - A novel and simple electrochemical sensor for the determination of gallic acid is presented. The alumina sample was characterized by X-ray diffraction, FTIR, and particle size distribution analysis. The carbon paste electrode was modified with alumina and used as a sensor. The performances of the sensor were assessed by cyclic voltammetry and square-wave voltammetry techniques. The oxidation of gallic acid on alumina-modified carbon paste electrode was an irreversible diffusion-controlled process. The linear relationship of peak current and concentration was obtained for the concentration range of 1.4 to 115 µM with the limit of detection of 0.8 µM. The sensor’s ability to test gallic aid in real systems was successfully tested in wine samples.

AB - The mesoporous zirconia/alumina composites were synthesized via a sol–gel method,
followed by heat treatment at 500 ◦C for 5 h. The effect of the ZrO2/Al2O3 ratio on the structural and
textural properties of the obtained composites was explored. Sorption analysis has confirmed that
all samples have a mesoporous structure whose parameters (SBET, Vp and Dmax) strongly depend
on the ZrO2/Al2O3 ratio. The XRD pattern of composites has shown that the addition of zirconia
disrupts the crystallinity of alumina. The composites with higher zirconia content (50% ZrO2 and
67% ZrO2
) are characterized by peaks related only to the zirconia phase. UV/Vis diffuse reflection
spectra of all samples revealed that composites have more intensive absorption compared to pure
oxides for wavelengths larger than 250 nm and similar band gaps. Photoluminescence measurements
showed presence of defects in all samples, which are responsible for photocatalytic activity. All
samples showed significant adsorption/photocatalytic efficacy for the removal/degradation of 2,4,6
-trichlorophenol (TCP). Results obtained using HPLC and TOC techniques showed that between 70
and 80% of the initial TCP concentration was removed/degraded after 4 h of illumination. These
results were corelated with flat, conduction and valence band potentials of synthesized pure and
binary oxides, calculated using Mott–Schottky plots.

AB - Phosphate tungsten bronze (WPB) and phosphate molybdenum bronze (MoPB) were synthesized and modified with rhenium. The existing phases were established by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), electron paramagnetic spectroscopy (EPR) and Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The electroactivity of bronze samples, with and without rhenium for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was tested. The influence of carbon black presence in the catalytic ink on the electrochemical activity was investigated. Collected results provide insight into the effects of the constituents of an electrode on its electrochemical activity.

AB - Organomodified bentonites were obtained by modification of bentonite clay from local mine Bogovina, with four different alkylammonium ions in the amounts that correspond to cation exchange capacity. Carbonized bentonites, obtained by pyrolyzing the organomodified bentonites in the flow of nitrogen, were characterized using XRD, low-temperature N2 physisorption and Raman spectroscopy. Structural and textural properties of carbonized bentonites depended on the arrangement of alkylammonium cations in the paternal organomodified bentonite, while the Raman spectroscopy confirmed the presence of amorphous carbon. The obtained carbonized bentonites were used for modification of the carbon paste electrode. The modified electrodes were investigated using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The electrosorption of chloride and sulfate anions on carbonized bentonites was studied by chronocoulometry. The results were interpreted in the terms of surface groups and textural properties of the carbonized bentonites.

u puferovanom i nepuferovanm rastvoru. Način modifikacije glina je uticao na aktivnost elektroda i
mehanizam redoks rekacije
AB - Montmorillonite originated from Wyoming was modified by acid activation and aluminum pillaring process. The samples of clay obtained in this manner, as well as starting clay, were applied at the surface of a glassy carbon electrode by the means of Nafion. The activity of these electrodes was investigated on the redox couple quinone/hydroquinone (Q/QH2) in buffered and unbuffered solutions. The type of clay modification influenced the activity of the electrodes and the mechanism of the redox reaction.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the response of different alumina types modified by cooper. Two alumina oxyhydrates with different water content, 3mol H2O/ mol Al2O3 (gibbsite) 0.6 mol H2O/ mol Al2O3 (α,γ-alumina phase), were used in this study. Copper modified alumina samples were prepared by ion exchange with a solution of CuSO4*5H2O. Cu-alumina samples were dried at at 110 o C overnight. The obtained samples were used as modifiers of the carbon paste electrode. Their electrochemical response toward ferricyanide/ferrocyanide redox probe was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and correlated with the type of alumina and the amount of copper in impregnated alumina. The possibility of the application of Cu-alumina as an electrochemical sensor was tested.

Alumina as electrode material

AB - Alumina (aluminium oxide or Al2O3) is one of the well-known ceramic materials. This
material is widely used as abrasives, in the production of refractory products and glass,
advanced ceramics, medical applications, and military and electronics applications. It is also
used as a catalyst and/or catalyst support for various catalytic reactions. Alumina found its
various applications in the field of electrochemistry as well: as solid electrolyte, anodic
membrane, and corrosion coatings are the most prominent of them.
Most intriguingly, alumina although known as an insulating material, is also used as the
electrode material. In recent years it was noticed that the properties of the glassy carbon
electrode were enhanced after polishing the electrode with γ-alumina. The morphology and
structure of Al2O3 particles used for the electrode polishing influenced electrode
performances. The investigations were continued with the alumina applied at the surface of
the electrode. Strong apparent catalysis of the catechol redox process was noticed in the
presence of alumina on the electrode surface leading to the conclusion that the alumina on the
electrode surface can act as a catalyst for oxidative process involving a proton-coupled
electron-transfer process.

AB - This work presents the investigation of electrochemical properties of three alumina samples with different structure and crystal water content. The samples were characterized by XRD and FTIR-ATR analysis, confirming the presence of trihydrate, monohydrate and anhydrous alumina. The samples were used as modifiers of carbon paste electrodes. Their electrochemical behavior toward ferricyanide/ferrocyanide redox probe was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The electrochemical behavior toward ruthenium hexamine redox probe was investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The response toward quinone/hydroquinone redox probe was evaluated in buffered and unbuffered solution by cyclic voltammetry. It was found that the surface chemistry of investigated samples influenced their electrochemical properties.

AB - In this paper, the relationship of structure, type of oxygen defects, valence states of Cr and Ru, and electro-
chemical properties of La0.7Sr0.3Cr1-XRuXO3 (0 < x < 0.1) perovskite-type oxides were studied. The samples were
synthesized by a conventional solid-state reaction method and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray
fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron
paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The electrochemical performance of these samples was evaluated towards
the detection of 4-nitrophenol and strongly depends on the concentration of ruthenium incorporated in the
crystal lattice. A new La0.7Sr0.3Cr0.925Ru0.075O3 electrocatalyst with a wide linear concentration range (25–5000
mM) and a detection limit of 8 mM was obtained. These results provide an opportunity for its application in the
analysis of real water samples.

AB - This paper presents a new two-step method for the synthesis of NiO/TiO2–CeO2 semiconductors, which implies, the first, the mechanochemical synthesis of TiO2–CeO2 support, and the second is the doping of different NiO contents by chemical precipitation in an aqueous medium in an ambient atmosphere. Structural, optical, electrochemical and photocatalytic properties of NiO/TiO2–CeO2 semiconductors were examined. The influence of different NiO contents on the electrocatalytic activity of NiO/TiO2–CeO2 samples was investigated in the oxygen evolution reaction and the results showed that the samples with the lowest NiO content have the highest electroactivity. The photocatalytic activity was determined during the phenol decomposition process over the samples with different NiO:TiO2–CeO2 ratios and the best photocatalytic activity is observed for the sample with 4.1 mol% NiO. The sample with the lowest NiO content obtained by a relatively simple method is suitable for use both as an electrode material in the oxygen evolution reaction and as a photocatalyst in the phenol decomposition process.

AB - Montmorillonite based clay was acid activated. Nicotine was adsorbed on untreated
and acid activated clay from its aqueous solution at either pH=6 or pH=9.26 (unadjusted pH
solution). The XRD analysis revealed that the 001 basal spacing of montmorillonite after
nicotine adsorption was around 1.38 nm, regardless of clay treatment or pH of adsorption.
The obtained values for basal spacing indicate that nicotine is in monolayer arrangement. In
order to investigate electrochemical properties, untreated and acid activated clay, with and
without nicotine, were used as modifier of carbon paste electrode. Cyclic voltammetry and
electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were employed to study electrochemical response of
clay-modified electrodes toward ferrocyanide probe. The nicotine-modified untreated clay
used as paste electrode showed enhanced electrochemical response toward ferrocyanide
probe in comparison to electrode based on clay without nicotine. On the other hand,
adsorbed nicotine on acid activate clay resulted in lower electrode activity. Electrochemical
response of adsorbed nicotine was studied at different pH. Nicotine oxidation at each of
investigated samples followed the same trend regardless of clay treatment or pH at which
adsorption was performed. For all samples, nicotine oxidation peak potential showed linear
dependence on pH in pH range from 3.7 to 9.0, with slopes close to the value of 59 mVdec-1
expected for equal number of protons and electrons involved in the reaction. The nicotine
reduction process was best resolved at pH = 1 at potential around -1.35 V, while the
following cathodic wave observed at potential around -1.5 V was ascribed to the cathodic
hydrogen reduction. Mechanism of electrochemical oxidation was not influenced by pH of
adsorption, i.e., nicotine form. The amount of adsorbed nicotine was not correlated with the
electrochemical activity suggesting that only small number of adsorbed nicotine was involved
in electrochemical response.

abstract = "Montmorillonite based clay was acid activated.

AB - Alumina oxyhydrates have different structural and textural properties, as well as different density of surface functional groups. Three alumina oxyhydrates with different water content, 3mol H2O/ mol Al2O3 (gibbsite), 1mol H2O/ mol Al2O3 (boehmite) and 0.6 mol H2O/ mol Al2O3 (α,γ-alumina phase), were used in this study. The samples were used as modifiers of carbon paste electrode. Their electrochemical behavior toward ferricyanide/ferrocyanide redox probe was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry.
Ferricyanide/ferrocyanide redox system has a well-known electrochemical behavior and is sensitive to the changes occurring at the electrode surface. The lowest charge transfer resistance was obtained for α,γ-alumina phase. The redox process of ferri/ferro redox probe on investigated electrodes exhibited a quasi-reversible behavior, since the obtained values of peak-to-peak separation are greater than 59 mV value expected for a reversible process. The response toward quinone/hydroquinone redox probe was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry in buffered solutions at various pH. Gibbsite and boehmite showed expected response, while the surface groups of α,γ-alumina phase enabled quinone oxidation to proceed through two pathways simultaneously. The surface chemistry of investigated samples influenced their electrochemical properties.
