AB - Breaking news are usually disturbing. Natural disasters, wars, epidemics etc. are reported as breaking news. This paper reports a decreased danger of spreading of epidemics caused by the JN.1 variant, since analyses indicate that (a) infectivity of the new variant is decreased compared to most earlier variants, which is confirmed by the number of cases (7500 daily in USA). Moreover, JN.1 despite the great number of mutations has not been able to achieve the values of Gibbs energy of biosynthesis (and thus virus multiplication rate) of the Hu-1 wild type. The research shows that infectivity and pathogenicity of the JN.1 variant has not reached worrying size, which means that there is no reason to expect a worsening of the epidemiologic situation.

AB - For thousands of years, medicine has made efforts to study and heal infectious diseases. For centuries, medicine and biology have attempted to study the mechanisms of development of infectious diseases. For 100 years, virology has tried to understand and describe different viruses and reveal the secrets of pathophysiology of infections. Several decades ago, the efforts of biomedical scientists were joined by chemists. Since then viruses have been explored not only as biological systems, but also as chemical systems. With the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, biothermodynamics has made its contribution to the research on driving forces and mechanisms of lifecycles of viruses, the virus-host interaction. Since then, viruses have been analyzed as biological, chemical and thermodynamic systems. After reporting of chemical and thermodynamic properties of SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2, Ebola, Mpox, West Nile virus and bacteriophages, this paper reports for the first time the empirical formulas (unit carbon formulas) of Rotavirus A, as well as its thermodynamic properties of virus-host interaction at the membrane (antigen-receptor binding) and virus-host interaction in the cytoplasm (virus multiplication). The virus-host interactions are essentially chemical reactions, the driving force of which is Gibbs energy (of binding and biosynthesis).

AB - Pseudocapacive reaction of ruthenium oxide was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements combined with electrochemical quartz-crystal nanobalance. RuO2 was synthesized by one-pot microwave assisted hydrothermal method. CV measurements were conducted in H2SO4 and Na2SO4 solutions. The ruthenium oxide electrode as a working electrode was prepared by drop casting the water suspension of RuO2 on Au covered quartz electrode. Beside influence of different electrolyte, the effect of thermal treatment of RuO2 was also investigated since pseudocapacitive behaviour of RuO2 strongly depends on its hydrous form. The obtained results were compared to those of commercial RuO2. The results indicate that during the redox reaction of RuO2, various types of charge occur simultaneously. The mass loss or mass gain depends on the specific potential applied and the electrolyte employed.

AB - Cobalt–chromium–molybdenum (CoCrMo) alloys are known for medical use due to their biocompatibility, corrosion and wear resistance. The chemical and phase composition, as well as microstructure of the alloy directly affect the mechanical properties. In this investigation, CoCrMo alloy samples were obtained by vacuum precise casting. The procedure of melting and casting process as well as their parameters are given. Molds fabricated of copper, gray iron, steel, ceramics and graphite were used during the casting process. In this way, the cooling rate influence on the obtained microstructure was examined. Besides, different casting temperatures (1400°C, 1450°C and 1500°C) were applied for each kind of mold. After metallographic preparation, the microstructure was examined on the cross section of samples by optical microscopy. The obtained results show that by increasing the cooling rate, the microstructure of samples become finer and more homogeneous.

AB - Even though it has been in use for a very long time, the high chromium white cast iron (HCWCI) still triggers scientists due to its outstanding wear resistance. Besides its well-known as-cast usage, it can be used as a coating material, as well. HCWCI owes this feature due to the presence of carbides in microstructure, which depends on the composition and heat treatment regime. This investigation was conducted on two HCWCI alloys, where in addition to chromium, the second important alloying element is molybdenum (Mo). Apart from other alloying elements, HCWCI_1 is alloyed with 24.48% Cr and 1.32% Mo, while HCWCI_2 contains 14.11% Cr and 2.47% Mo. The comprehensive microstructural characterization was carried out on as-cast samples and samples obtained after quenching (at -196oC) and/or quenching followed by tempering (at 250oC). Important microstructure indicators are: the stability of austenite, the ratio of microconstituents (especially different types of carbides), as well as their arrangement and morphology, so they are revealed and discussed in relation to the influencing mechanical properties.

AB - Pseudocapacitance reaction of ruthenium oxide was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements combined with electrochemical quartz-crystal nanobalance.

AB - COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2 from the perspectives of medicine, biology, molecular biology, chemistry and biothermodynamics represent probably the best studied virus-host interaction until now. Empirical formula of SARS-CoV-2 is the second reported in history, immediately after the poliovirus. Empirical formulas of all SARS-CoV-2 variants have been reported in the literature. This paper reports empirical formulas, biosynthesis reactions and thermodynamic properties (enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs energy) for the XBB.1.9.1, XBF and XBB.1.16 variants of SARS-CoV-2. Since Gibbs energy of biosynthesis represents the driving force for virus multiplication, a conclusion was made that multiplication rate of the new SARS-CoV-2 variants is not significantly different than that of the other Omicron variants. Since multiplication rate determines the damage level to host cells, a conclusion was drawn that there is no increase in the degree of damage to host tissues. Thus, pathogenicity of the new variants did not significantly change. In that case, it can be expected that the number of severe cases should not increase. Therefore, it seems that the health risk for the society should not change.

AB - The particle size distribution (PSD) in metals can be discussed from two perspectives: internal and external, or more precisely PSD can be observed depending on the origin of the particles in metals. The internal perspective encompasses those particles that were formed in the metal or an alloy during its production process: melting, refining (such as steel deoxidation and desulfurization), alloying, and those particles can be endogenous non-metallic inclusions (NMIs) and/or different structural phases. Exogenous NMIs can also occur in a metal or an alloy, but their origin is from external source (such as furnace lining). Apart from NMIs, there are exogenous particles added for reinforcing purpose in metal-matrix composite (MMC) materials. The origin, composition and formation mechanism of the particles present in metallic materials influence the size, shape and type of distribution. PSD is a key parameter to microstructure and, hence, to the mechanical properties and usability of the metallic materials. Some of the principal criteria determining the properties of metals, especially the performance of steels, as well as the conduction of the production process are NMIs content and distribution. The evaluation of the phenomena can be done leaning on the assessment of NMIs and algoritm development for prediction of their size distribution based on measured values.
Upon the quantitative characterization of NMIs in steel and assessment the effect of limiting factors, the reconstruction of total content of NMIs in steel can be evaluated. Based on that estimation, and connection to the formation mechanicm of NMIs, it is possible to predict the model of the size distribution curve. The goal is to establish relationships and algorithm based on which it will be possible to quantify the NMIs content in extra pure steels and their size distribution, using measured data to verify the theoretical prediction.

AB - There is a long process to transform bauxite, a critical raw material, into a substance with the required properties of cast aluminum alloys for use in electro automotive parts. Thanks to its unique properties, aluminum has become the material of choice for clean technology manufacturers in applications such as use in the automotive industry, renewable energy, batteries, electrical systems, resource-saving packaging, energy efficient buildings and clean mobility. Restructuring of the economy, the oil crisis, air pollution and global warming are some of the factors that have moved the automotive industry towards electrification since the beginning of the 21st century. This paper aims to highlight the required properties of cast aluminum alloys applied to the production of electro automotive parts, such as their mechanical and thermophysical properties, dimensional stability, corrosion resistance, electromagnetic compatibility and crashworthiness. Furthermore, this paper discusses which of the cast aluminum–silicon alloys, as well as the heat treatments and casting processes, are most suitable.

AB - Polygonal Pt nanoparticles were synthesized using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) at different precursor concentrations. Physicochemical analysis of the synthesized Pt particles involved thermogravimetric, microscopic, electron diffractive, and light absorptive/refractive characteristics. Electrochemical properties and activity in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of the prepared material were compared to commercial Pt black. Registered electrochemical behavior is correlated to the structural properties of synthesized powders by impedance characteristics in ORR. The reported results confirmed that Pt nanoparticles of a characteristic and uniform size and shape, suitable for incorporation on the surfaces of interactive hosts as catalyst supports, were synthesized. It is found that USP-synthesized Pt involves larger particles than Pt black, with the size being slightly dependent on precursor concentration. Among ORR-active planes, the least active (111) structurally defined the synthesized particles. These two morphological and structural characteristics caused the USP-Pt to be made of lower Pt-intrinsic capacitive and redox currents, as well as of lower ORR activity. Although being of lower activity, USP-Pt is less sensitive to the rate of ORR current perturbations at higher overpotentials. This issue is assigned to less-compact catalyst layers and uniform particle size distribution, and consequently, of activity throughout the catalyst layer with respect to Pt black. These features are considered to positively affect catalyst stability and thus promote USP synthesis for improved properties of host-supported Pt catalysts.

AB - Determination of the extractive behavior of ionic species from lateritic ore leachates is complex, since the leachates are pregnant with tens of different ions in, as a rule, multiple oxide states. To examine the possible pathways of intrinsic electrochemical extraction of the crucial elements Ni and Co, it was necessary to make model solutions of these elements and to subject them to electrochemical examination techniques in order to obtain a benchmark. Beside Ni and Co, the model system for Fe had to be evaluated. Iron, as a dominant ore component by far, is the main interfering factor in the extraction processes of Ni and Co in rather low amounts from leaching solution. The leachate examination results were compared to separate model solutions, as well as to their combinations in concentrations and to pH values comparable to those of the leachate. The separation of the leachate components was initially performed by continuous increase in pH upon leaching with NaOH solution, and afterwards the pH-adjusted solutions were subjected to electrochemical investigation. With the purpose of connecting and quantifying the visual changes in leachate upon increase in pH, conductometric measurements were performed. Reactions of oxidation/precipitations were indicated, which led to the essential Fe removal by precipitation. Resulting solutions were found suitable for Ni and Co electrochemical extraction.

Reactions of oxidation/precipitations were indicated, which led to the essential Fe removal by precipitation. Resulting solutions were found suitable for Ni and Co electrochemical extraction.",

AB - Recently there is an effort to reach highly reversible and stable materials for energy storage
processes. Novel materials used in electrochemistry-based energy storage as a suitable
supports for noble ones, has been predominant in the past few years. Supercapacitors, as a
bridge between batteries and traditional capacitors, have attracted significant attention as new
promising energy storage devices. Hybrid nanomaterials based on manganese, cobalt, and
lanthanum oxides of different morphology and phase compositions were prepared using a
facile single-step ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) process. Transition metal oxides are
considered as an ideal electrode materials for electrochemical redox transitions-based
pseudocapacitors, because they can provide a variety of oxidation states for rather fast and
efficient redox transitions. Strontium-doped lanthanum cobaltites (La1-xSrxCoO3- , LSCO)
have shown promising catalytic performance for ORR in alkaline media. The aim of this
investigation was to bring detailed insights of supercapacitive potentials of pure LSCO and
LSCO hydrothermally doped by RuO2. Also, to separate influences of constituting oxides to
this issue, in order to reveal the redox electrochemistry behind perovskite structures as
supports for supercapacitive applications.

AB - Hybrid nanomaterials based on manganese, cobalt, and lanthanum oxides of different morphology and phase compositions were prepared using a facile single-step ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) process and tested as electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The structural and morphological characterizations were completed by XRD and SEM-EDS. Electrochemical performance was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry in a rotating disk electrode assembly. All synthesized materials were found electrocatalytically active for ORR in alkaline media. Two different manganese oxide states were incorporated into a Co3O4 matrix, δ-MnO2 at 500 and 600◦C and manganese (II,III) oxide-Mn3O4 at 800◦C. The difference in crystalline structure revealed flower-like nanosheets for birnessite-MnO2 and well-defined spherical nanoparticles for material based on Mn3O4. Electrochemical responses indicate that the ORR mechanism follows a preceding step of MnO2 reduction to MnOOH. The calculated number of electrons exchanged for the hybrid materials demonstrate a four-electron oxygen reduction pathway and high electrocatalytic activity towards ORR. The comparison of molar catalytic activities points out the importance of the composition and that the synergy of Co and Mn is superior to Co3O4/La2O3 and pristine Mn oxide. The results reveal that synthesized hybrid materials are promising electrocatalysts for ORR.

AB - The aim of this work was to investigate corrosion resistivity, bioactivity, and antibacterial activity of novel nano-amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) potentially multifunctional composite coatings with and without chitosan oligosaccharide lactate (ChOL), ACP + ChOL/TiO2 and ACP/TiO2 ACP + ChOL/TiO2, respectively, on the titanium substrate. The coatings were obtained by new single-step in situ anodization of the substrate to generate TiO2 and the anaphoretic electrodeposition process of ACP and ChOL. The obtained coatings were around 300 ± 15 μm thick and consisted of two phases, namely, TiO2 and hybrid composite phases. Both ACP/TiO2 and ACP + ChOL/TiO2 have improved corrosion stability, whereas the ACP + ChOL/TiO2 coating showed better corrosion stability. It was shown that at the very start of the deposition process, the formation of the ChOL/TiO2 layer takes place predominantly, which is followed by the inclusion of ChOL into ACP with simultaneous growth of TiO2. This deposition mechanism resulted in the formation of strongly bonded uniform stable coating with high corrosion resistance. In vitro bioactivity was investigated by immersion of the samples in simulated body fluid (SBF). There is in-bone-like apatite formation on both ACP/TiO2 and ACP + ChOL/TiO2 surfaces upon immersion into SBF, which was proven by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. While ACP/TiO2 shows no antibacterial activity, ACP + ChOL/TiO2 samples exhibited three- to fourfold decreases in the number of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, respectively, after 420 min. The probable mechanism is binding ChOL with the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting its growth, altering the permeability of the cell membrane, and leading to bacterial death.

AB - Monitoring the occurrence and rate of corrosion, the formation of thermal oxides on the surface of metal parts of the power plant, as well as the method of their elimination in a way that is technologically suitable, economically affordable and environmentally justified is shown in this technical solution. It has been established that the metal elements affected by corrosion were made from stainless steel AISI 304. Accordingly, the occurrence of corrosion and thermal oxides was monitored based on the material and the composition of the dust with which the metal parts are in contact. The emergence of thermal oxides on the surface of stainless steels is a consequence of the elevated temperature at the welding site. The pH value of both solutions was measured: standard and saturated solution of dust from the plant. The composition of the dust samples was determined by FTIR. The other tests were defined based on the ions present in the solution. The corrosion potential, the value of the polarization resistance, as well as the corrosion current density were determined. All tests of stainless steel in the standard solution and in the saturated solution of dust were performed for one hour within a span of 25 days.Technological recommendations on how to eliminate corrosion and thermal oxides are provided. The solution has been applied since January 2021 by ELNOS BL d.o.o.

AB - Electrochemical properties of pigment extracts from dark red corn grains was investigated by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV) on glassy carbon electrode (GC) in 0.1 M H2SO4. The shape of CV was typical for the oxidation of polyphenols. The antioxidant capacity of pigment from dark red corn grains was established from the charge under the anodic peaks. Quantitative determination of dark red corn pigments was performed by SWV. The linear polarization resistance (LPR) examinations were conduced in order to study the corrosion effect of polyphenolics on mild steel. Calculated corrosion inhibition efficiency ranged from 30% to 70%. Determination of the corrosion inhibition efficiency revealed that the red corn pigments have anti-corrosion effect on mild steels.

Lateritic ore was leached in 1 M H2SO4 solution at 70 oC by standard leaching process. The leachate was afterwards subjected to the pH adjustment that led to the removal of metal ions by precipitation. Measurements of pH as well as chemical analysis show characteristic values of metal ion removal from the PLS.

AB - Electrochemical measurements were employed to study the possibility of the extraction of metal ions from lateritic ore leachates predominantly rich in Fe in order to separate more noble cobalt and nickel metals. Lateritic ore was leached in 1 M H2SO4 solution at 70 °C by standard leaching process. The leachate was afterwards subjected to the pH adjustment that led to the removal of Fe ions by precipitation. Results obtained from cyclic voltammetry and chronamperometry measurements in native leachate and those with adjusted pH showed that optimal pH value for Fe removal was 3.7.

abstract = "Electrochemical measurements were employed to study the possibility of the extraction of metal ions from lateritic ore leachates predominantly rich in Fe in order to separate more noble cobalt and nickel metals. Lateritic ore was leached in 1 M H2SO4 solution at 70 °C by standard leaching process. The leachate was afterwards subjected to the pH adjustment that led to the removal of Fe ions by precipitation. Results obtained from cyclic voltammetry and chronamperometry measurements in native leachate and those with adjusted pH showed that optimal pH value for Fe removal was 3.7., Elektrohemijskim merenjima je ispitivana mogućnost izdvajanja kobalta i nikla iz lužine lateritne rude bogate sa Fe. AB - Microstructure assessment is crucial for the design and production of high-quality alloys such as cast aluminum alloy ingots. Along with the effect of a more homogeneous microstructure to result in much better mechanical properties, better as-cast alloy quality indicates a higher efficiency of the aluminum alloys production process. During the aluminum alloy solidification process many microstructural defects can occur, which deteriorate the mechanical properties and hence decrease the usability of such an ingot. Application of the electromagnetic field during the vertical continuous casting process significantly reduces occurrence of these defects. In the present study, EN AW 7075 alloy samples were cast with and without application of an electromagnetic field and examined regarding the microstructure, electrical conductivity, and changes in the phase composition. The obtained results clearly show that it is possible to decrease or avoid casting defects by the electromagnetic field application as verified by the microstructure characterization and quantification, electrical conductivity tests and differential thermal analysis (DTA).
AB - Određivanje i analiza mikrostrukture su presudni tokom dizajniranja i prilikom dobijanja legura aluminijuma visokog kvaliteta u livenom stanju. Pored neizbežne povezanosti homogenije mikrostrukture i boljih mehaničkih svojstava, bolji kvalitet u livenom stanju ukazuje i na veću efikasnost procesa proizvodnje legura aluminijuma. Tokom procesa očvršćavanja legure aluminijuma mogu se pojaviti mnogi mikro-strukturni nedostaci koji pogoršavaju mehanička svojstva, a samim tim i upotrebljivost takvog odlivka. Delovanje elektromagnetnog polja tokom procesa vertikalnog kontinualnog livenja značajno smanjuje pojavu ovih grešaka. Ovde prikazani rezultati dobijeni ispitivanjem mikrostrukture, električne provodljivosti i promene faznog sastava uzoraka legure EN AV 7075, odlivene u prisustvu elektromagnetnog polja, kao i bez njega, jasno pokazuju da je moguće smanjiti ili izbeći nedostatke livenja pri-menom elektromagnetnog polja. To je pokazano pomoću određivanja i analize mikro-strukture, ispitivanja električne provodljivosti i diferencijalne termičke analize (DTA).

AB - When the quantitative characterization of non-metallic inclusions in steel is done and the effect of limiting factors is assessed, and based on that the possibility of reconstruction of the total content of non-metallic inclusions in steel is estimated, further considerations can be directed towards predicting the model of the size distribution curve. The aim of this work is to establish relations based on which it will be possible to quantify the content of non-metallic inclusions in extra-pure steels, when metallographic control is difficult or even impossible by routine procedures.

AB - The paper analyses the corrosion behaviour of both naturally and artificially aged AA2024 aluminium alloy in NaCl solution in the presence of the corrosion inhibitor benzotriazole (BTA). The differences between these two aging tempers in terms of resistance to general corrosion are explained as well as the differences in terms of pit formation and pit growth. Based on the values of the polarisation resistance and the corrosion current density, the general corrosion resistance of the alloy is determined in the absence and in the presence of BTA. The resistance to pit formation and pit growth is determined on the basis of the polarisation measurements results. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed the expected differences in the appearance and size of the pits formed in naturally aged and artificially aged alloy. In the presence of the corrosion inhibitor BTA, for both aging tempers of the alloy, the corrosion resistance is significantly higher compared to the resistance in the solution without the inhibitor. The value of the polarisation resistance for both aging tempers increases over time. However, at the same time, the value of the constant phase element increases as well. An explanation for this phenomenon is provided. The calculated average value of the thickness of the adsorbed inhibitor layer on the surface of the aluminium alloy is in accordance with the inhibitor protective ability for both aging tempers.
