AB - Reuse and/or recycling of spent adsorbents is taking a central role in modern thinking and catalyzed carbonization is the way forward. Herein we explore the carbonization of adsorbed acetamiprid, in an inert atmosphere, as a way of recycling and producing nitrogen-rich carbon material for potential use in supercapacitors. Added value material and the reuse of the adsorbent were achieved by carbonization at 700 °C under argon. The formation of a nitrogen-doped carbon layer as an active material on the adsorbent, bonded through a C-Si linkage, has been conclusively verified through elemental composition quantification using XPS and EDX measurements. Two-stage catalytic decomposition and condensation of the adsorbed pesticide is followed by TGA and TPD-MS. Attained carbon-based materials give stable Faradaic capacitance with a slight dependency on the number of adsorbing cycles. Capacitance calculated with respect to the adlayer carbon material reaches values as high as 610 F g−1. Galvanostatic Charge/Discharge measurement confirmed the stability of explored materials with a slight increase in capacitance over 1000 cycles. The presented results envisage electroactive materials preparation from environmental pollutants, adding value to spent adsorbents.

AB - This work reports results on phenol adsorption from aqueous solution by porous copolymers based on glycidyl methacrylate: two samples of macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), were synthetized by suspension copolymerisation with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate. In addition, the two copolymer samples were functionalized with ethylene diamine. The amounts of adsorbed phenol were presented in the form of adsorptions isotherms, which were interpreted using Langmuir, Freundlich and Sips' equations. The first was found to express high level of agreement with experimental data. Phenol adsorption indicate the homogeneous distribution of active sites present on the investigated polymers. It was found that adsorption of phenol on copolymers is fast and depends on the presence of amino groups and on the pore size. From the obtained results, it was possible to distinguish macroporous polymer as a material which possesses the capacity for adsorption of phenol comparable to that of activated carbon.

AB - Size-segregated aerosol samples were collected using six stages High Volume Cascade Impactor. Aerosol mass and water soluble ions concentrations were determined. The Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model was used to study the origin of air masses arriving to Belgrade in the investigated period. The obtained results of aerosol mass and water-soluble ion concentrations have been divided into six sub-data sets based on air mass categories. The highest average mass concentration of the fine mode (D-p LT = 0.49 mu m) was found for air masses coming to Belgrade from the southeast and northwest directions, and of the coarse mode (3.0 LT D-p LT = 7.2 mu m) for air masses arriving from the northwest direction. The highest concentrations of SO42- were found in the fine particles transported to the investigated area by air masses from southeast direction. The analysis of contribution of marine aerosol components (Na+ and Cl-), the Correlation and Cluster Analysis indicated the influence of marine aerosol on urban aerosol of the central Balkans coming from the Western Mediterranean and northern direction. NH4+ and SO42- and K+ dominated in the fine mode for all air mass categories. PCA demonstrated the dominant impact of secondary aerosol formation processes on urban aerosols.

AB - The chemical content of atmospheric deposition is the signature of several interacting physical and chemical mechanisms: i.e., emission and source amplitude; transport processes and dynamics of the atmosphere; atmospheric chemical reactions; and removal processes, among others. Studying deposition processes and amounts thus allow for tracing the spatio-temporal evolution of atmospheric chemistry. It is also an important way for distinguishing between natural and anthropogenic influences. Sulfate, nitrate and ammonium ions are formed in the atmosphere in gas-particle conversion processes. Sulfates represent one of the main components of atmospheric aerosols. In southern Europe, rainwater has similar concentrations of acidic anions to those of other parts of Europe, but the average precipitation is not acid due to neutralizing role of basic cations. The Mediterranean Sea is enclosed basin, which is susceptible to dust transport from desert sources in North Africa (Sahara) and the Middle East (the Arabian Peninsula and Syria), lying on its periphery. The climatic conditions are favorable for the transport of dust from North Africa into the eastern Mediterranean atmosphere during the spring, while other conditions favor transport into the western Mediterranean atmosphere during the summertime. An investigation of wet deposition of water soluble Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl-, SO42-, NO3- and NH4+ were done in south-eastern Adriatic coast in the period from January 1995 until December 2000. The highest precipitation and the highest frequencies of air masses coming from the western Mediterranean cause the highest Wet Deposition (WD) of the main water soluble ions. The most abundant WD of SO42- in investigated region was caused by air masses coming from the western Mediterranean and western and central Europe. The sea salt components (Na+, Cl-, Mg2+) are significantly correlated. The correlations between Ca2+ and Mg2+, Ca2+ and SO42- and Ca2+ and K+ indicate that the main terrigeneous ions were associated with formation of eolian particles which include gypsum (CaSO4), calcite (CaCO3) and dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2). Although the Volume Weighted Mean (VWM) of Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl-, SO42-, NO3- and NH4+ that are coming in air masses from the continental parts of Europe are significant, the total Wet Deposition (WD) is dominated by precipitation coming over Mediterranean due to abundances of precipitation from this segment.

AB - The distribution of nano/micron inorganic main ions in the size-segregated urban aerosol of Belgrade center was studied during the summer-autumn of 2008. The particle size distribution in the size ranges D(p) LT = 0.49 mu m, 0.49 LT = D(p) LT = 0.95 mu m, 0.95 LT = D(p) LT = 1.5 mu m, 1.5 LT = D(p) LT = 3.0 mu m, 3.0 LT = D(p) LT = 7.2 mu m and D(p) >= 7.2 mu m was measured. The aerosol samples were submitted to gravimetric and chemical analyses. The obtained mean mass concentration of the PM fractions was in accordance with an urban aerosol distribution. The aerosol mass concentrations were determined by gravimetric measurements (m(GM)) and, analyzed by ion chromatography for Na(+), NH(4)(+), K(+), Mg(2+), Ca(2+), Cl(-), NO(3)(-), PO(4)(3-) and SO(4)(2-). The mean random uncertainties associated with the determinations of Na(+), NH(4)(+), K(+), Mg(2+), Ca(2+), Cl(-), NO(3)(-) and SO(4)(2-) were assessed. The absolute highest concentration is found for SO(4)(2-) (1555.8 +/- 973.6 ng m(-3)) in the range of D(p) LT = 0.49 mu m with an average participation of 8.19% to the total mass of the particles. The highest coefficients of correlation were found between NH(4)(+) and SO(4)(2-). Principal component analysis, PCA, was used for the identification and evaluation of the contributions of the main emission sources to the contents of water soluble ions in the urban aerosol. The formation of (NH(4))(2)SO(4) was found to be the dominant process. The influences of local urban (traffic) and regional industrial sources (nearby city Pancevo) were identified and a contribution of marine aerosol was observed.

AB - The results of content of water-soluble ions measured in 604 samples of precipitation collected in South-Eastern Adriatic region during 6 years have been analyzed. The HYSPLIT model was used to study the air mass paths. Although the ion concentrations of investigated ions in precipitation of air masses from the continental parts of Europe were significant, the total wet deposition is dominated by precipitation coming over the Mediterranean Sea. The sea salt components are significantly correlated. The correlations between Ca2+ and Mg2+, Ca2+ and SO4 (2-) and Ca2+ and K+ indicate the main terrigeneous ions.

AB - This paper presents the extraction of cations from a soil sample, type ranker on serpentinite, in deionized water, by use of three different extraction techniques. The first extraction technique included the use of a rotary mixer, the second technique involved the use of a microwave digestion system with different extraction temperatures, and the third technique employed an ultrasonic bath with different extraction times. Ion chromatography was used for determining the concentration of Li, Na, K, Ca, Mg and ammonium ions in soil extracts with subsequent determination of concentrations for all cations, except for ammonium ion extraction, conducted by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry. The results of cation extractions showed that microwave assisted extraction was most efficient for the Li, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Co, Mn, Ni, Pb and ammonium ions. Use of a rotary mixer for extraction was most efficient for Cd and Zn ions, while use of ultrasound bath was most efficient for Cr, Cu, Fe and Al ions. Several times higher amount of cations extracted by the most efficient, compared to the second best technique, under optimal conditions, were noticed in the case of: Ca, Mg, Co, Mn, Fe, Al, and Zn ions.

AB - Arsenic reduction in drinking water can include treatment by adsorption, switching to alternative water sources, or blending with water that has a lower arsenic concentration. Commercial sorbents MTM, Greensand and BIRM (Clack Corporation) were modified with zirconium and titanium after activation. The modifications were performed with titanium tetrachloride and zirconium tetrachloride. The modified sorbents were dried at different temperatures. The sorption of arsenate and arsenite dissolved in drinking water (200 mg L-1) onto the sorbents were tested using a batch procedure. After removal of the sorbent, the concentration of arsenic was determined by hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (HG-AAS). Zirconium-modified BIRM showed the best performance for the removal of both arsenite and arsenate. Modification of the greensand did not affect arsenic sorption ability. Zirconium-modified BIRM diminished the concentration of total As to below 5 μg L-1.
