AB - The effect of an 80Ni-20Cr (at.%) metallic coating on the cyclic oxidation behaviour of a Ti3Al-based alloy with the composition Ti-25Al-11Nb (at.%) was investigated in this study. Cyclic oxidation tests were carried out in air at 600 degrees C and 900 degrees C for 120 h. For one cycle test, the specimens were held for 24 h at test temperature and then furnace-cooled to room temperature. The oxidation rate was determined by plotting the mass gain per unit surface area of the specimen vs. exposure time. The morphology and composition of the oxidation products were characterized on the cross-section of the specimens by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. The oxidation scale forms during exposure at both 600 degrees C and 900 degrees C. TiO2 is the main oxide component, whereas the Al2O3 layer appears only discontinuously. The remarkable improvement in oxidation resistance at 900 degrees C was attributed to the chemical composition and structure of the scale formed on the 80Ni-20Cr coating.

AB - In this paper we present pulse deposition as a new method to favor the self-assembly of nanostructured materials. Nucleation and growth of gold thin layers deposited on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite substrate have been studied using scanning tunneling microscopy in air. Depositions were performed in a pulsed regime and, for comparison, continuously in time. Much higher cluster density and better arrangement of clusters are obtained for pulse deposition than for gold deposited continuously. The formation of the channel structure of the deposited layer is favored and achieved earlier. The results indicate that the number of surface defect sites increases with subsequent pulses, behavior attributed to the previously formed clusters taking on the role of surface defect sites.

AB - In this paper, we present a study of the nucleation and growth stages of sputter-deposited Cr thin films on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) substrates using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) in air. Freshly cleaved HOPG surfaces and those modified by Ar+ ion bombardment were used as substrates. For short deposition times, two-dimensional (2D) chromium clusters on the graphite substrate were observed. With an increase in deposition time, the formation of three-dimensional (3D) clusters occurred. The number of surface defect sites influences the number and size of clusters formed on the graphite substrate. The formation and surface diffusion of 2D and 3D clusters play a dominant role in the subsequent stages of the nucleation of chromium thin films. The results of our investigation show clearly that the most important contribution to the elementary mechanism of growth is the phase transition from 2D to 3D clusters and their condensation into larger 3D clusters.
