AB - Two series of polyurethane (PU) composites based on poly(ε-caprolactone), aliphatic
hyperbranched polyester, isophorone diisocyanate and different content (0.5, 1 and 2 wt.%) of
unmodified or surface-modified TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared. For the surface modification
of TiO2 nanoparticles lauryl gallate was applied. Neat PU and composites were prepared by a
two-step solution polymerization method, using sonification in an ultrasonic bath for composite
fabrication in order to achieve homogenous distribution of nanoparticles, added in the first step of
polymerization reaction. Morphology of prepared neat PU and its composites were investigated
by utilizing scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM).
According to the obtained SEM micrographs, neat PU has compact and uniform cross-sectional
morphology, while in the structure of its composites small voids and certain micro-structures,
such as clusters or aggregates, can be observed. Furthermore, SEM-EDS measurements
confirmed the presence of Ti atoms in composites, originating from the incorporated nanoparticles. AFM analysis showed the existence of microphase separated morphology on the
surface of PU and its composites. Moreover, the surface of both series of composites became
rougher with the addition of nanoparticles, and its roughness increases with increasing amount of
TiO2 nanoparticles. Prepared PU composites may have potential application as coatings.

AB - Polyurethane networks (PUNs) are versatile materials that have a wide range of
applications. Their structure is often segmented which means that it is built from thermodynamically incompatible flexible soft (SS) and rigid hard segments (HS) leading to the formation of microphase separation in the PUNs. With the careful design and selection of SS and HS it’s possible to control PUNs structure, morphology, solvent resistance, etc. Here, polycaprolactone (PCL) was used as SS to prepare segmented PUNs, due to its attractive features, such as low glass transition temperature (around -60 °C), biocompatibility, biodegradability, hydrophobicity, good solubility in various solvents, high permeability to many gasses, etc., in order to prepare PUNs with desired surface properties for their application as coatings [1,2].
In this study, a series of PUNs was synthesized by a two-step polymerization process, according to the procedure described elsewhere [1,3]. The synthesized PUNs are based on Boltorn®
hydroxy-functional aliphatic hyperbranched polyester of the second pseudo generation (BH-20,
Mn = 1340 g mol-1), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and polycaprolactone diol (PCL, Mn
= 2000 g mol-1). Five samples with diferent SS content (from 10 to 50 wt.% SS content) and constant –NCO/−OH molar ratio of 1.05 were synthesized. Stannous octoate (Sn(Oct)2
) was used as a catalyst, while a mixture of N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) was used as a solvents during the synthesis of PUNs. PUN samples were labeled as PUN-XX, where XX represents the SS content (from 10 to 50). Surface morphology and the surface roughness of the PUNs were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM examination of
PUNs was performed by applying NTEGRA Prima atomic force microscope (NT-MDT, Moscow, Russia). Measurements were done using NT-MDT NSGO1 silicon cantilevers (N-type,
antimony doped with Au reflective coating). The nominal force constant of the cantilevers was
5.1 N m-1, whereas the cantilever driving frequency was around 150 kHz. Intermittent-contact
AFM mode was applied and data related with topography and phase were collected. AFM
images were created and analyzed with Image Analysis 2.2.0 (NT-MDT) and Gwyddion 2.61
(Free and Open Source software, Czech Metrology Institute) software. The scan area of the
PUNs surface was 20 × 20 μm2.
AFM analysis was carried out to explore the surface topography, homogeneity and the
impact of the SS content on microstructural features of the synthesized PUNs, such as nanometer scale structures and roughness. The recorded 3D height and 2D phase pictures (scan size 20
× 20 μm2) and obtained roughness values are presented in Figure 1 and Table 1, respectively.
According to the captured 3D height pictures it can be seen that surface topography of PUNs
strongly depends on the SS content. That is reflected in the fact that samples with smaller SS
content have more flat and smoother relief structures, without any larger domains, opposite
to the samples with the higher SS content. Furthermore, according to the presented 2D phase
pictures it can be observed that prepared PUNs have heterogeneous surface morphology, due to
the existence of more pronounced and more noticeable interface borders between phases. This
behavior is more prevalent in PUN samples with higher SS content [3]. The examined roughness of the PUNs shows that samples with SS content of 30 and 40 wt.% (PUN-30 and PUN-40
samples) have the highest roughness values (Rq and Ra, Table 1). The reason for this may lie in the fact that these samples have optimal ratio between HS and SS, allowing easier organization of SS [4].
A series of PUNs based on BH-20, IPDI and PCL was successfully synthesized. AFM
analysis showed that the content of SS has a significant impact on the surface properties of
these PUNs. Moreover, PUNs have two phase morphology that originates from the presence of
HS and SS, and it was more pronounced in the samples with higher SS content [5].

AB - The benefit of being acquainted with thermal properties, especially the thermal stability of polyurethanes (PU), and simplified methods for their improvement is manifold. Considering this, the effect of embedding different amounts of unmodified and surface-modified TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) within PU, based on polycaprolactone (PCL) and Boltorn® aliphatic hyperbranched polyester, on PU properties was investigated. Results obtained via scanning electron microscopy, swelling measurements, mechanical tests and thermogravimetric analysis revealed that TiO2 NPs can be primarily applied to improve the thermal performance of PU. Through surface modification of TiO2 NPs with an amphiphilic gallic acid ester containing a C12 long alkyl chain (lauryl gallate), the impact on thermal stability of PU was greater due to the better dispersion of modified TiO2 NPs in the PU matrix compared to the unmodified ones. Also, the distinct shape of DTG peaks of the composite prepared using modified TiO2 NPs indicates that applied nano-filler is mostly embedded in soft segments of PU, leading to the delay in thermal degradation of PCL, simultaneously improving the overall thermal stability of PU. In order to further explore the thermal degradation process of the prepared composites and prove the dominant role of incorporated TiO2 NPs in the course of thermal stability of PU, various iso-conversional model-free methods were applied. The evaluated apparent activation energy of the thermal degradation reaction at different conversions clearly confirmed the positive impact of TiO2 NPs on the thermal stability and aging resistance of PU.

AB - In this paper, thermal and thermo-oxidative stability of three water-based polyurethanes (PUs) derived from hydroxypropyl
terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (HPT-PDMS) were studied. The structural properties of the synthesized samples were
investigated by 1H NMR measurements, while characterization of their surface, performed by atomic force microscopy,
revealed the existence of microphase-separated structures. According to the results obtained by thermogravimetric analysis
(TGA), thermo-oxidative and thermal stability of the investigated water-based PUs decreases with decreasing HPT-PDMS
content. Furthermore, obtained results also suggest that both, thermo-oxidative and thermal degradation reaction of waterbased
PUs occurred as a three-step process. In both atmospheres the first step of degradation is attributed to the degradation
of weak urethane and urea bonds and the second step to the decomposition of polysiloxane chains. In order to undertake a
detail investigation of thermal degradation process of water-based PUs, TG measurements in nitrogen atmosphere at four
different heating rates (5, 10, 15 and 20 °C/min) were performed. Different iso-conversional model-free methods, such
as Ozawa-Flynn-Wall, Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose and Friedman, were applied to determine apparent activation energy of
thermal degradation reaction (Ea) of water-based PUs, at different conversions (α). Deviation in parallelism of the obtained
fitted lines confirmed that thermal degradation reaction of water-based PUs occurred in three successive steps, followed by
different degradation mechanism. Since linear fitting of the experimental data by Friedman method had the lowest correlation
coefficient, Ozawa-Flynn-Wall and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose methods were considered to be the most reliable for Ea
calculation. A comprehensive analysis of the obtained results revealed that, despite their similar structure, each water-based
PU shows unique profile of Ea = f(α) plot.

AB - The aim of this work was to examine the influence of polycaprolactone (PCL) as a soft segment (SS) on the surface properties of polyurethane networks (PUNs). Five PUNs with different SS content (from 10 to 50 wt%) were prepared using Boltorn® aliphatic hyperbranched polyester of the second pseudo generation and isophorone diisocyanate as components of hard segments. The structure, hydrophobicity, wettability, and swelling behavior of these PUNs were investigated. Primarily, the obtained results showed that properties of prepared PUNs strongly depend on the content of SS that is, PCL. It has been established that the increase of SS content reduced the degree of hydrogen bonding in PUNs. Also, the increase of the SS content in PUNs induced appearance of more pronounced microphase separated morphology, better hydrophobicity and non-wetting with diiodomethane. Simultaneously, the increase of the SS content led to the decrease of contact angles with formamide, and surface free energy of the prepared PUNs. These PUNs show good surface properties that are required for their potential application such as coatings.

amorphous, while samples with the highest SS content had a certain degree of
crystallinity. Viscoelastic properties of PUNs depend on the SS content and used
HBP. These PUNs have potential application as coatings.

AB - The influence of soft segment (SS) content on the properties of novel polyurethane networks (PUNs), prepared by a two-step polymerization in a solvent mixture, was investigated in this work. Hyperbranched polyester of the third pseudo generation (BH-30) was used as a crosslinker, and together with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) was applied to build hard segments (HS) in PUNs. On the other hand, SS of the prepared PUNs are based on polycaprolactone (PCL). The content of SS in PUNs varied from 10 to 50 wt%. The structural, thermal and mechanical properties, swelling behavior, as well as morphology of PUNs, were explored by various experimental methods. Performed investigations have shown that the use of BH-30 led to the emergence of relatively high crosslinking density and good mechanical properties, and that all features of PUNs significantly depend on the SS content. Higher PCL content caused presence of certain crystallinity, better thermal stability, more pronounced microphase separated morphology, but also lower degree of hydrogen bonding, crosslinking density and storage modulus of the prepared PUNs. The obtained results have shown that the properties of PUNs can be easily varied and customized to different practical needs.

gallate were incorporated into polyurethane (PU) network, based on Boltorn® aliphatic
hyperbranched polyester of the second pseudo generation (BH-20) as crosslinking agent and
polycaprolactone (PCL) as soft segment (SS). The influence of the applied TiO2 NPs on viscoelastic
properties and thermo-oxidative stability of the prepared PU/TiO2 nanocomposites (NCs) were
investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA),
respectively. DMA results revealed that addition of unmodified and modified TiO2 NPs led to the
increase of glass transition temperature of SS, decrease of the glass transition temperature of hard
segments and crosslinking density of PU network. According to the obtained results, PU/TiO2 NC
loaded with TiO2 NPs surface modified with lauryl gallate has better thermo-oxidative stability than
pure PU and PU/TiO2 NC prepared with unmodified TiO2 NPs.

AB - Waterborne polyurethanes (WBPUs) represent a class of polyurethanes (PUs), in which water is used as the dispersion medium, instead hazardous organic solvents. In this manner, the emission of volatile organic compounds is decreased, leading to the environmental preservation. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) has a lot of useful features, such as low glass transition temperature, Tg, low surface energy, excellent biocompatibility, high thermal and oxidative stability, which is why PDMS is often used in WBPU formulations. Siloxane-modified WBPUs exhibit the properties of both, PDMS and PUs. WBPUs based on PDMS have good surface properties, such as excellent hydrophobicity, chemical resistance and low surface energy. Because of these useful features, WBPUs based on PDMS can be used as coatings, adhesives, paints, etc. In this work, a series of WBPUs was synthesized via one-step polymerization method, without a chain extension step, using acetone and water as solvents and stannous octoate as a catalyst.

AB - A series of novel waterborne polyurethanes (WBPUs) was synthesized using α,ω-
dihydroxypropyl poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), 2,2-bis-
(hydroxymethyl) propionic acid (DMPA) and triethylamine (TEA). Different DMPA/PDMS and
constant –NCO/–OH molar ratio have been applied for the synthesis of six different WBPUs,
without the usage of chain extension step. The structure-properties relationship was examined
with diverse experimental analyses. ATR-FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR analyses confirmed the
incorporation of PDMS parts inside polyurethane backbone and the successful preparation of
WBPUs. XRD analysis showed that all WBPUs are amorphous, without any kind of threedimensional
order. According to the conducted TG measurements, the incorporation of PDMS
increases thermal stability of WBPUs. DMA results confirmed the existence of microphase
separation, which was more pronounced in WBPUs with higher PDMS content. Contact angle
measurements with water confirmed good surface hydrophobicity of these WBPUs, which
originates from the high percentages of Si atoms present on the surface of WBPU films. Good
hydrophobicity originates from PDMS which has known to possess low surface energy and have
a high tendency to migrate on the surface of the WBPUs. The synthesis of these WBPUs represents
a more efficient and eco-friendly way for preparation of polyurethanes and they are good
candidates for application as coatings.

AB - In this study, six waterborne polyurethanes (WBPUs) were synthesized based on α,ω-
dihydroxypropyl poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), 2,2-
bis-(hydroxymethyl) propionic acid (DMPA) and triethylamine (TEA). WBPUs were
prepared without a chain extension step and with various DMPA/PDMS molar ratios
(from 0.2 to 0.7). The mechanical features, particle size and particle size distribution, as
well as molecular weights of WBPUs were investigated by diverse experimental
techniques.
Tensile strength values were in the range from 4.03 to 6.33 MPa, and generally decrease
with decreasing PDMS content in WBPUs. This occurs due to the presence of lower
degree of microphase separation in WBPUs with lower PDMS content. On the other
hand, the incorporation of flexible PDMS led to an increase of elongation at break values
(from 0.4 to 58.6%) in WBPUs. The particle size of the prepared WBPU dispersions and
molecular weight of WBPU films decrease with increasing DMPA content. Particle sizes
of these WBPU dispersions are in the range from 91.4 to 232.3 nm, while the weight
average molecular weights (Mw) are in the range from 11900 to 15300 g/mol [1].
Prepared WBPUs are polymer materials with good mechanical features and suitable
particle sizes, which enable them to be used as coatings for different purposes.

AB - A novel magnetic polymer/bentonite composite was prepared by suspension copolymerization of glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate in the presence of magnetic bentonite (MB-PGME) and functionalized with ethylene diamine and hexamethylene diamine (MB-PGME-ED and MB-PGME-HD). The obtained samples were characterized in terms of structure as well as thermal, magnetic and morphological properties. The sorption of rhenium (Re) and tungsten (W) from aqueous solution onto MB-PGME-ED and MB-PGME-HD was investigated considering their contact time and different initial ion concentration, giving possibility for usage of these composites as commercial sorbents. The sorption system follows the pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models. The results indicated a better fit with the Freundlich isotherm model.

AB - A series of novel waterborne polyurethanes (WBPUs) was synthesized using α,ω-dihydroxypropyl poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), 2,2-bis-(hydroxymethyl) propionic acid (DMPA) and triethylamine (TEA). Different DMPA/PDMS molar ratio (from 0.2 to 0.7) and fixed –NCO/–OH molar ratio of 1.7, has been applied for the synthesis of six different WBPU films, without utilization of chain extension step during the synthesis. The structure of the prepared WBPUs was examined and confirmed by FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. The particle size of the prepared WBPU dispersions and molecular weight of WBPU films decrease with increasing DMPA content. In order to investigate the effect of the DMPA/PDMS ratio on thermal, mechanical and morphological properties, as well as the water resistance of the prepared WBPUs, diverse experimental techniques, such as thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, tensile tests, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and water contact angle measurements have been carried out. This research has shown that the incorporation of PDMS in WBPUs led to the appearance of microphase separation and provided surface hydrophobicity, good thermal and mechanical properties, which allow application of these WBPUs as coatings for various purposes.

AB - This work was focused on the synthesis of polyurethane networks (PUNs) based on
polycaprolactone (PCL) as soft segment (SS) and Boltorn® aliphatic hyperbranched
polyester of the second pseudo generation and 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate
(MDI) as the parts of the hard segments (HS), by a two-step solution polymerization.
In order to find the best ratio between HS and SS to achieve good thermal
and mechanical properties, suitable hydrophobicity and morphology of the PUNs,
various experimental analyses were conducted. The obtained results revealed that
features of the PUNs highly depend on the PCL content. The increase in the PCL
content leads to the increase in thermal stability, hydrophobicity and appearance of
the microphase separation, but on the other side, it also leads to the decrease in storage
modulus in the rubbery plateau, crosslinking density and glass transition temperatures
of PUNs. This work shows that features of PUNs can be easily adjusted for
a specific application by careful selection of the SS and HS ratio.

AB - A series of environmentally friendly polyurethane (PU) networks based on polycaprolactone as soft segment (SS) and Boltorn® aliphatic hyperbranched polyester of the second pseudo generation as crosslinking agent was prepared by a two-step polymerization in solution. The chemical structure of the PU networks was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, while XRD analysis revealed that these samples are amorphous. Swelling measurements, water absorption study, dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, mechanical tests and scanning electron microscope revealed that, swelling behavior, hydrophobicity, thermal and mechanical features and morphology of PU networks show clear dependence on polycaprolactone content. The increase of the SS content induced appearance of the microphase separated morphology, increase of thermal stability, elongation at break, hydrophobicity and swelling ability in tetrahydrofuran and toluene, but at the same time it is responsible for the decrease of crosslinking density, glass transition temperatures, rigidity, tensile strength and Young’s modulus of PU networks. Scanning electron microscope images of the fracture surfaces of PU networks show that their surface is rough, irregular, with flake-like structure, where size of flakes increases with increasing SS content. These results indicate that by choosing adequate SS content, PU coatings with diverse features based on polycaprolactone and Boltorn® aliphatic hyperbranched polyester can be designed for appropriate and desired application

AB - In this study, macroporous magnetic poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)/bentonite composite functionalized with hexamet-hylene diamine (SGE/MB-HD) was tested as potential Cr(VI) sorbent from aqueous solutions. The sorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms were studied according to the data obtained in static experiments with different initial Cr(VI) concentration at room temperature and pH = 2.0. The Cr(VI) sorption obeys the pseudo-second-order model with definite influence of pore diffusion. Desorption experiments show that chromium anion sorption was reversible and the SGE/MB-HD was easily regenerated with 0.1 mol/dm3 NaOH.

AB - Magnetic polymer microspheres consisting of a polymer and inorganic magnetic nanoparticles have been successfully used for separation of toxic and radioactive pollutants. Bentonite as well has been proved as an excellent adsorbent for heavy metals and organic pollutants removal from wastewaters. In order to combine favorable characteristics of magnetite nanoparticles (easy separation using magnetic field), bentonite (large surface area, high chemical and mechanical stability, low-cost and easily available) and macroporous copolymer (selectivity, possibility of
additional functionalization, high sorption rate and capacity, recycling capability) a novel magnetic polymer/bentonite nanocomposite was synthesized.

AB - Segmented polyurethanes (SPU) are multiblock copolymers consisted of hard (HS) and soft segments (SS). HS usually form crystalline domains that are responsible for good mechanical properties, while SS represent amorphous matrix that contributes to good elastomeric properties, hydrophobicity and inertness of the SPUs. Furthermore, the morphology of the SPUs is one of the main factors that determine their physical and chemical properties. Moreover, thermodynamic incompatibility between HS and SS leads to the formation of microphase separation within the
SPUs. Properties of SPUs mostly come from their different composition and microphase separation between segments.

AB - Polyurethane networks (PUN) represent versatile materials which are usually consisted of
different hard (HS) and soft segments (SS). They possess very good mechanical, thermal and surface
properties. Such properties originate from their different composition, chemical structure of the
crosslinking agent and molecular weights of the HS and SS [1].
In this work, series of PUNs was obtained by catalyzed two-step polymerization method in
the solvents mixture. The PUNs were based on polycaprolactone macrodiol that represents SS and
4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and Boltorn® hyperbranched polyester of the second pseudo
generation which were selected as the HS. Six PUNs were synthesized with different content of SS
(from 10 to 60 wt.%).
The structure and surface properties (morphology, swelling behavior and water absorption) of
the synthesized PUNs was examined in order to investigate these materials for potential application in
coatings.

AB - Environmental poisoning due to the emission of waste silver electrical and electronic
industries, jewelry, photography and dentistry, in the last few decades has been of growing concern. The most effective methods for silver removal from aqueous media include electrolysis, precipitation, ion-exchange and adsorption. Highly crosslinked GMA-based polymers are chemically and mechanically stable materials containing reactive epoxy groups susceptible to undergoing functionalization, thus allowing the attachment of complexing agent selective for a specific metal ion.
In this presentation, macroporous chelating glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol
dimethacrylate copolymer functionalized with diethylene triamine (PGME-deta) was tested as Ag(I)
sorbent from aqueous solutions. The sorption kinetics was studied in batch experimental mode and
static conditions at room temperature and different initial Ag(I) concentration. The results were fitted to surface-reaction (pseudo-first and pseudo-second-order) and particle diffusion-based (intraparticle diffusion and Boyd’s) kinetic models.
The pseudo-second-order model provided the best fit for the kinetic data, with a definite
influence of pore diffusion. The maximum sorption capacity at pH 6 of 2.25 mmol g-1 (240 mg g-1)
was reached after 30 minutes. Equilibrium data were analyzed with Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin adsorption isotherm models.
