velikih količina biodostupne organske supstance, brzina disanja mikroorganizama je veća.
Praćenje disanja je postalo bitan parametar u raznim procesima biodegradacije otpadne

AB - The paramount challenge of the 21st century lies in the profound energy demands imposed by
contemporary society. The utilization of energy derived from non-renewable sources,
notably coal, oil, and their byproducts, is intrinsically associated with grave environmental
repercussions, primarily manifested in the form of pollution. The notion of fuel cells stands
as a prospective resolution to this problem, offering a sustainable avenue for energy
production devoid of environmentally adverse emissions. The aim of this research was to
explore the potential of carbon cloth electrodes in the Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) system.

AB - Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a promising technology that has the potential to solve environmental problems while simultaneously generating electricity. Thanks to the direct use of energy from the substrate and its conversion into electricity, as well as the controlled production of activated sludge, the multiplicity of independent applications highly qualifies MFC for the use of wastewater treatment. Wastewater from various industries is an ideal source of organic substrate that can potentially be used in MFC systems. In this way besides degrading organic pollutants, generated energy can be obtained as added value and used for various purposes.

AB - Macroporous (glycidyl methacrylate) GMA-based composite was
synthesized via suspension polymerization in the presence of 2 wt. % magnetic
nanoparticles and functionalized with triethylenetetramine. Copper was immobilized
on composite by contacting modified copolymer with 0.1 M solution of CuCl2, at pH
5, and 25 ̊C. The obtained composite was characterized by mercury porosimetry,
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis and atomic force
microscopy (AFM). GMA-based composites, due to their properties (size, porosity,
etc.), and the presence of reactive epoxy group, have found a variety of applications
as sorbents, enzyme supports, in biomedical applications, for metal and organic
compounds sorption.1
The antimicrobial activity of the synthesized GMA/Cu copolymer against
Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger as
representatives for Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, yeast and fungi
were investigated in this study.2 The copolymer displayed good antimicrobial activity
against all analyzed microbes, which makes it a material that can be potentially used
for biomedical (antibacterial and antifungal) applications.

AB - The aim of this work was to examine the influence of polycaprolactone (PCL) as a soft segment (SS) on the surface properties of polyurethane networks (PUNs). Five PUNs with different SS content (from 10 to 50 wt%) were prepared using Boltorn® aliphatic hyperbranched polyester of the second pseudo generation and isophorone diisocyanate as components of hard segments. The structure, hydrophobicity, wettability, and swelling behavior of these PUNs were investigated. Primarily, the obtained results showed that properties of prepared PUNs strongly depend on the content of SS that is, PCL. It has been established that the increase of SS content reduced the degree of hydrogen bonding in PUNs. Also, the increase of the SS content in PUNs induced appearance of more pronounced microphase separated morphology, better hydrophobicity and non-wetting with diiodomethane. Simultaneously, the increase of the SS content led to the decrease of contact angles with formamide, and surface free energy of the prepared PUNs. These PUNs show good surface properties that are required for their potential application such as coatings.

AB - Preclinical development of deuterated pyrazoloquinolinone ligands, promising drug candidates for various neuropsychiatric disorders, was hindered by unusually low solubility in water and oils. DK-I-60-3 (7-methoxy-d3-2-(4-methoxy-d3-phenyl)-2,5-dihydro-3Hpyrazolo[4,3-c]quinolin-3-one) is one of such pyrazoloquinolinones, and we recently reported about increased oral bioavailability of its nanocrystal formulation (NC). Lipid nanoparticles (LNP) with a high concentration of lecithin, which enhances loading capacity of the lipid matrix, may give rise to further improvement. After preformulation studies by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized light microscopy, LNP were prepared by the hot high pressure homogenization, and characterized in terms of particle size, morphology, and encapsulation efficacy. The layered structure visible on atomic force micrographs was confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance. Obtained formulations were desirably stable, with small particle size (<100 nm), and high encapsulation efficacy (>99 %). Lecithin was partially fluid and most probably located in the outer shell of the particle, together with DK-I-60-3. While the hydrophobic part of polysorbate 80 was completely immobilized, its hydrophilic part was free in the aqueous phase. In oral neuropharmacokinetic study in rats, an around 1.5-fold increase of area under the curve with LNP compared to NC was noticed both in brain and plasma. In bioavailability study, F value of LNP (34.7 ± 12.4 %) was 1.4-fold higher than of NC (24.5 ± 7.8 %); however, this difference did not reach statistical significance. Therefore, employment of LNP platform in preclinical formulation of DK-I-60-3 imparted an incremental improvement of its physicochemical as well as pharmacokinetic behavior.

abstract = "Preclinical development of deuterated pyrazoloquinolinone ligands, promising drug candidates for various neuropsychiatric disorders, was hindered by unusually low solubility in water and oils. AB - Electrophotography is affected by several parameters, including printing machines and paper type, which determine the final quality of reproduction. For the
investigation of those effects, tests were done on the three types of electrophotography printing machines and eight types of uncoated paper with different properties of
weight, surface roughness, whiteness, brightness and opacity. Samples were printed with cyan, magenta, yellow and black toner under the standard, identical conditions.
The assessment of standard print quality parameter (optical density) was done using spectrodensitometer Techkon Spectro Dens. At the same time, the paper substrates
were characterized using the atomic force microscopy (AFM) as well as by spectrophotometric measurements (X Rite Eye-One, i1). Obtained results showed that the
reproducibility significantly depends on the type of printing machine rather than optical and mechanical properties of paper.

AB - Food packaging ensures safety and hygiene, while reducing food waste, therefore it is and ssential component of the food supply chain. A sustainable and biodegradable alternative to conventional food packaging is edible packaging which contributes to the reducing waste and the economic efficiency of packaging materials. The numerous biopolymeric materials could be used as source such as polysaccharides (starch, cellulose, chitosan) and proteins (gelatin, soy protein, whey). Exopolysaccharides (EPS) are fermentation-based biopolyrners, secreted outside the cell wall and synthesized by various microbial species including bacteria, fungi and blue-green algae. Microbial levan is fructose-based EPS and convenient due to its biocornpatibility, renewability, high molecular weight, low viscous nature, antioxidant and prebiotic effects. Levan used in this work was produced by the B. licheniformis NS032 strain and its hydrophobic derivatives were obtained using octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA). Degree of substitution (DS) for modified levans were 0.025 and 0.032 for LH22 and LH25 respectively. Three different film compositions were prepared:
levan/LH22/LH26 with gelatin in proportions 1:1. Films were prepared by casting technique and evaporated at room temperature. Morphology of the obtained films were studied by ARV (Atomic force microscopy), AutoProbe CP-Research SPM (TM Microscopes-Broker) and mechanical properties were examined by Shimodzu E2-LX tensile tester. The samples had thickness of 150 trrrl. Based on morphological measurements, it can be concluded that use of levan derivatives change roughness of the levan/gelatin blend film. The best mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation at break) were obtained with pure levan. Obtained films are composed from edible and biodegradable components and therefore are potentially applicable in food industry. Future investigation will be focused on optimization of levan/gelatin proportion and more extensive
structural and mechanical properties of obtained films.

Evolution of construction, performance and application of MFCs is presented. The path towards optimization of the performance led through design and construction of the cell and was followed by investigation of impact of different sediments containing different microbial communities. The sediment samples were collected from two locations in Serbia, confluence of rivers Sava and Danube in Belgrade and the acid mine drainage lake "Robule" in the copper mine Bor. Results of verified application in wastewater treatment are discussed.

AB - The problem of wastewater has long been ubiquitous and has great consequences for the environment and its
inhabitants. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have enormous potential for the treatment of wastewaters polluted with
azo dyes. The amount of energy that can be produced from a single-chamber MFC is sufficient to perform
decolorization and degradation of such dyes, which are widely used in the textile industry. This study on the azo
dye, reactive black 5 (RB5), provides an alternative method through three parallel-connected MFCs to obtain
electricity that directly serves for the dye’s electrochemical degradation. We examined degradation followed by
decolorization of RB5 using Fe and Pt electrodes, together with H2O2, to achieve the electro-Fenton process. The
amount of voltage produced (295 mV), the current density (276 mA m− 3
) and the power density (50 mW m− 3
)
were sufficient to degrade 25 mg L-1 RB5 dye with 0.5 mM H2O2 in just 2 h. The dye degradation mechanism was
investigated using UV–VIS, FT-IR and HPLC-MS/MS. The ecotoxicity of the degradation products was assessed
using a bacterial model, Aliivibrio fischeri. These tests showed that there was successful degradation of the dye to
products whose toxicity is less than that of RB5.

AB - Polymeric film-forming systems have emerged as an esthetically acceptable option for targeted, less frequent and controlled dermal drug delivery. However, their dynamic nature (rapid evaporation of solvents leading to the formation of thin films) presents a true characterization chal- lenge. In this study, we tested a tiered characterization approach, leading to more efficient definition of the quality target product profiles of film-forming systems. After assessing a number of physico- chemico-mechanical properties, thermal, spectroscopic and microscopic techniques were introduced. Final confirmation of betamethasone dipropionate-loaded FFS biopharmaceutical properties was sought via an in vitro skin permeation study. A number of applied characterization methods showed complementarity. The sample based on a combination of hydrophobic Eudragit® RS PO and hy- droxypropyl cellulose showed higher viscosity (47.17 ± 3.06 mPa·s) and film thickness, resulting in sustained skin permeation (permeation rate of 0.348 ± 0.157 ng/cm2 h), and even the pH of the sample with Eudragit® NE 30D, along with higher surface roughness and thermal analysis, implied its immediate delivery through the epidermal membrane. Therefore, this study revealed the utility of several methods able to refine the number of needed tests within the final product profile.

AB - A nanotechnology-based approach to drug delivery presents one of the biggest trends in biomedical science that can provide increased active concentration, bioavailability, and safety compared to conventional drug-delivery systems. Nanoemulsions stand out amongst other nanocarriers for being biodegradable, biocompatible, and relatively easy to manufacture. For improved drug-delivery properties, longer circulation for the nanoemulsion droplets should be provided, to allow the active to reach the target site. One of the strategies used for this purpose is PEGylation. The aim of this research was assessing the impact of the oil phase selection, soybean or fish oil mixtures with medium chain triglycerides, on the physicochemical characteristics and injectability of curcumin-loaded PEGylated nanoemulsions. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy demonstrated the structural impact of the oil phase on the stabilizing layer of nanoemulsions, with a more pronounced stabilizing effect of curcumin observed in the fish oil nanoemulsion compared to the soybean oil one. The design of the experiment study, employed to simultaneously assess the impact of the oil phase, different PEGylated phospholipids and their concentrations, as well as the presence of curcumin, showed that not only the investigated factors alone, but also their interactions, had a significant influence on the critical quality attributes of the PEGylated nanoemulsions. Detailed physicochemical characterization of the NEs found all formulations were appropriate for parenteral administration and remained stable during two years of storage, with the preserved antioxidant activity demonstrated by DPPH and FRAP assays. In vitro release studies showed a more pronounced release of curcumin from the fish oil NEs compared to that from the soybean oil ones. The innovative in vitro injectability assessment, designed to mimic intravenous application, proved that all formulations tested in selected experimental setting could be employed in prospective in vivo studies. Overall, the current study shows the importance of oil phase selection when formulating PEGylated nanoemulsions.

AB - Aims Because the Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most well‐known pathogens associated with medical devices and nosocomial infections, the aim of the study was to examine antibiofilm potential of emodin against it. Methods and Results Antibacterial activity was examined through microdilution assay. Antibiofilm testing included crystal violet staining of biofilm biomass and morphology analysis by Atomic force microscopy (AFM). Furthermore, aerobic respiration was monitored using the Micro‐Oxymax respirometer. For investigation of gene expression qRT‐PCR was performed. Emodin demonstrated strong antibacterial activity and ability to inhibit biofilm formation of all tested strains. The effect on preformed biofilms was spotted in few strains. AFM revealed that emodin affects biofilm structure and roughness. Monitoring of respiration under emodin treatment in planktonic and biofilm form revealed that emodin influenced aerobic respiration. Moreover, qRT‐PCR showed that emodin modulates expression of icaA, icaD, srrA and srrB genes, as well as RNAIII, and that this activity was strain‐specific. Conclusion The results obtained in this study indicate the novel antibiofilm activity of emodin and its multiple pathways of action. Significance and Impact of Study This is the first study that examined pathways through which emodin expressed its antibiofilm activity

AB - Poor water solubility of new chemical entities is considered as one of the main obstacles in drug development, as it usually leads to low bioavailability after administration. To overcome these problems, the selection of the appropriate formulation technology needs to be based on the physicochemical properties of the drug and introduced in the early stages of drug research. One example of the new potential drug substance with poor solubility is DK-I-60-3, deuterated pyrazoloquinolinone, designed for the treatment of various neuropsychiatric disorders. In this research, based on preformulation studies, nanocrystal technology was chosen to improve the oral bioavailability of DK-I-60-3. Nanocrystal dispersions stabilized by sodium lauryl sulfate and polyvinylpyrrolidone were prepared by modified wet media milling technique, with the selection of appropriate process and formulation parameters. The nanoparticles characterization included particle size and zeta potential measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray powder diffraction, dissolution and solubility study, and in vivo pharmacokinetic experiments. Developed formulations had small uniform particle sizes and were stable for three months. Nanonization caused decreased crystallite size and induced crystal defects formation, as well as a DK-I-60-3 solubility increase. Furthermore, after oral administration of the developed formulations in rats, two to three-fold bioavailability enhancement was observed in plasma and investigated organs, including the brain.

The amount of electricity produced by MFC systems is sufficient to run systems that do not require high energy consumption, such as electrochemical decomposition of wastewater from the textile dye industry. The aim of this study was to analyze the voltage and current of two parallelly-connected MFC cells used for decolorisation of the wastewater that contained Reactive Black 5 (RB5) dye.

AB - The use of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) for the purpose of obtaining energy from nature has
grown in the second decade of the 21st century. Due to the lack of fossil fuels and less and less available renewable energy sources, MFCs have great potential for obtaining small amounts of electricity. Increasing attention is focused on the use of such types of energy. The aim of this paper is to analyse the current generation of two parallel-connected MFC cells and the power generation obtained in this way.

AB - Global worldwide population and urbanization in general have created an increasing need for new energy sources. These sources need to be renewable, but it is also very important to respect the principles of environmental protection. Microbial fuel cells (MFC) are a green technology that has been attracting more and more attention in the last decade. MFC presents a system that produces electrical current through metabolic processes of microorganisms, such as the decomposition of organic matter. In this process, chemical energy is directly converted into electrical energy.

AB - This paper presents an application of a portable microfluidic platform based on a filter paper on which multi-walled carbon nanotubes were deposited to quickly determine the quality of olive oil by measuring electrical resistance. Three different types of filter paper with different pore sizes and different filtration rates were used in the middle of the microfluidic platform, as a material for soaking a blend of olive and high-oleic sunflower oil. The rapid prototyping xurographic technique was used to fabricate the complete microfluidic platform. For testing purposes, oil blends in various proportions were deposited through the inlet on the top of the platform. The variation in electrical resistance at room temperature was measured, using the Chemical Impedance Analyzer, successfully indicating oil proportions in measured blends. We obtained the change of resistance in the range from 0.26 MΩ to 2.79 MΩ per percentage of olive oil content, for corresponding linearity index from 0.71 to 0.99, for papers labelled with 44–45, respectively. Additionally, a prototype of electronic device was developed for acquisition and displaying measured data, based on the created microfluidic platform.

AB - This study focuses on the development of biocompatible oil-in-water (O/W) nanoemulsions
based on polyglycerol esters, as promising carriers for natural actives: red raspberry seed oil—RO
and hydro-glycolic fruit extracts from red raspberry—RE and French oak—FE. Nanoemulsions
were obtained via phase inversion composition (PIC) method at room temperature by dilution of
microemulsion phase, confirmed by visual appearance, percentage of transmittance, microscopic,
rheological and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) investigations. The results have shown that
the basic RO-loaded formulation could be further enriched with hydro-glycolic fruit extracts from
red raspberry or French oak, while keeping a semi-transparent appearance due to the fine droplet
size (Z-ave: 50 to 70 nm, PDI value _ 0.1). The highest antioxidant activity (~92% inhibition of the
DPPH radical) was achieved in the formulation containing both lipophilic (RO) and hydrophilic
antioxidants (FE), due to their synergistic effect. The nanoemulsion carrier significantly increased
the selective cytotoxic effect of RO towards malignant melanoma (Fem-X) cells, compared to normal
human keratinocytes (HaCaT). In vivo study on human volunteers showed satisfactory safety profiles
and significant improvement in skin hydration during 2 h after application for all nanoemulsions.
Therefore, polyglycerol ester-based nanoemulsions can be promoted as effective carriers for red
raspberry seed oil and/or hydro-glycolic fruit extracts in topical formulations intended for skin
protection and hydration.

AB - The current study describes the experimental design guided development of PEGylated nanoemulsions as parenteral delivery systems for curcumin, a powerful antioxidant, as well as the evaluation of their physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant activity during the two years of storage. Experimental design setup helped development of nanoemulsion templates with critical quality attributes in line with parenteral application route. Curcumin-loaded nanoemulsions showed mean droplet size about 105 nm, polydispersity index <0.15, zeta potential of −40 mV, and acceptable osmolality of about 550 mOsm/kg. After two years of storage at room temperature, all formulations remained stable. Moreover, antioxidant activity remained intact, as demonstrated by DPPH (IC50 values 0.078–0.075 mg/mL after two years) and FRAPS assays. In vitro release testing proved that PEGylated phospholipids slowed down the curcumin release from nanoemulsions. The nanoemulsion carrier has been proven safe by the MTT test conducted with MRC-5 cell line, and effective on LS cell line. Results from the pharmacokinetic pilot study implied the PEGylated nanoemulsions improved plasma residence of curcumin 20 min after intravenous administration, compared to the non-PEGylated nanoemulsion (two-fold higher) or curcumin solution (three-fold higher). Overall, conclusion suggests that developed PEGylated nanoemulsions present an acceptable delivery system for parenteral administration of curcumin, being effective in preserving its stability and antioxidant capacity at the level highly comparable to the initial findings.

AB - As the number of poorly soluble drugs is increasing, nanocrystals have become very interesting due to wide range of application possibilities. Curcuminwas used as a model active ingredient in this work. Even though it has many proven positive effects, due to its physicochemical issues, its possibilities have not been fully exploited. The goal of this work was to select optimal conditions for a top-down method for curcumin nanosuspension production, and to perform their comprehensive characterization applying complementary methodologies: dynamic light scattering, polarization and atomic force microscopy, thermal analysis, X-ray powder diffraction, antioxidant activity evaluation, release kinetics assessment, and screening of potential biological effects applying cell viability assays on normal human lung fibroblasts, human melanoma and human adenomacarcinoma cells. After 30 min of milling, nanosuspensions stabilized by polysorbate 80 and by its combinations with sucrose palmitate showed good stability, while curcumin crystal structure was unaltered. Obtained nanocrystals were well defined, with average diameter 120-170 nm and PDI of about 0.25, zeta potential was below -30 mV and pH~5 for all formulations. Nanodispersions exhibited high antioxidant potential and improved dissolution rate compared to the corresponding coarse dispersions. Although curcumin nanodispersions exhibited significant antiproliferative effect to each cancer cell line, the highest effect was towards adenocarcinoma cells.

AB - An aluminum-based, self-powered, miniaturized sensor for breath humidity detection is presented. The sensor is designed as an interdigitated capacitor made out of sputtered aluminum 1 % silicon (Al 1 %Si) thin film, 700 nm thickness, with digits 1.5 mm long, 0.01 mm wide and 0.01 mm clearance between them. The voltage on the open end of the sensor is generated when the surface is covered with a thin layer of water vapor, for instance if a person blows on it. The voltage generated is up to 1.5 V. The voltage generation is based on an electrochemical process of interaction between aluminum, water and oxygen from air, similar to the operation of an aluminum-air battery. The rise time of the signal during water vapor (or breath) detection is as small as 10 ms which makes it one of the fastest humidity sensors reported to date. The relaxation time is in the range of 50 ms. To make detection possible, the sensor surface needs to be activated by native oxide removal with the help of electric current and de-mineralized water droplet. Usability of the sensor was demonstrated in the detection of human breathing, where the sensor managed to follow the cycles of inhaling and exhaling.
