AB - Nanocrystalline iron manganite powder was synthesized using the sol–gel combustion process, with
glycine as fuel. It was further calcined at 900 C for 8 h, resulting in the formation of a loose cubic
FeMnO3 powder with a small specific surface area, net-like structure and plate-like particles as
confirmed by XRD, N2 physisorption, FESEM and TEM analyses. The metal ion release was studied by
ICP-OES and showed that less than 10 ppb of Fe or Mn ions were released by leaching in water, but
0.36 ppm Fe and 3.69 ppm Mn was found in LB (Luria–Bertani) bacterial medium. The generation of
reactive oxygen species (ROS) was monitored in distilled water and bacterial medium and showed that
FeMnO3 particles do not generate O2c
ions with or without UV irradiation, but synthesize H2O2 and
show an antioxidative effect. Besides the higher stability of FeMnO3 particles in aqueous solution they
showed an inhibitory effect on Bacillus subtilis growth in LB medium even at low concentrations
(0.01 mg ml 1), but not in BHI medium even at 1 mg ml 1. This study points out that the mechanism of
antibacterial action of engineered metal oxides needs continued investigation and specific experimental
controls

AB - Antimony doped barium-stannate dense ceramic materials were synthesized using spark plasma sintering technique out of mechanically activated precursor powders. The influence of various Sb concentrations (x =0.00 – 0.10) on properties of BaSn1-xSbxO3 ceramics was investigated. Relative densities of prepared samples were in the range of (79–96) %. TEM analysis revealed the presence of many dislocations in undoped BaSnO3, and their significant reduction upon doping with Sb. All samples except BaSn0.92Sb0.08O3 exhibit non-linear I-U characteristic, typical for semiconductors with potential barrier at grain boundaries. Low angle grain boundaries found only in BaSn0.92Sb0.08O3 caused the loss of potential barrier at grain boundaries which was confirmed by AC impedance spectroscopy measurements. Consequently, BaSn0.92Sb0.08O3 showed the lowest electrical resistivity and linear I-U characteristic. UV–vis analysis confirmed the increasing of band gap (Burstein–Moss shift) values in all doped samples.

AB - We investigated 1060 possible anion-pi interactions in a data set of 41 superoxide dismutase active centers. Our observations indicate that majority of the aromatic residues are capable to form anion-pi interactions, mainly by long-range contacts, and that there is preference of Trp over other aromatic residues in these interactions. Furthermore, 68% of total predicted interactions in the dataset are multiple anion-pi interactions. Anion-pi interactions are distance and orientation dependent. We analyzed the energy contribution resulting from anion-pi interactions using ab initio calculations. The results showed that, while most of their interaction energies lay in the range from -0 to -4 kcal mol(-1), those energies can be up to -9 kcal mol(-1) and about 34% of interactions were found to be repulsive. Majority of the suggested anion-pi interacting residues in ternary complexes are metal-assisted. Stabilization centers for these proteins showed that all the six residues found in predicted anion-pi interactions are important in locating one or more of such centers. The anion-pi interacting residues in these proteins were found to be highly conserved. We hope that these studies might contribute useful information regarding structural stability and its interaction in future designs of novel metalloproteins.

AB - In this paper, we propose a novel method for preparation of high surface area titania nanoparticles, and investigate their photovoltaic performance in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The precursor compound titanium(IV)-isopropoxide is hydrolyzed in the presence of nonionic surfactant (Triton X100) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid sodium salt (EDTA-Na-2) and thermally transformed into gel. The gel is autoclaved, resulting in submicronic micelles which are further processed into mesoporous films. The films are deposited from paste, composed of ultrasonically broken micelles and the organic ingredients. The crack-free film structures, composed of sub-25 nm pure anatase particles are observed using the appropriate instrumental techniques: scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy. The large surface area of 158 m(2) g (1) and mesoporosity are confirmed using the data obtained from the nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm. The photovoltaic performance of the operating N719-sensitized solar devices are tested using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), open-circuit voltage decay (OCVD) and by recording current density-voltage (J-V) curves. The cell exhibits promising photocurrent density up to 11.7 mA cm (2), and the photo-to-electric power efficiency of 5.22%, for cell area of 0.24 cm(2), under 100 mW cm (2) halogen light source.

abstract = "In this paper, we propose a novel method for preparation of high surface area titania nanoparticles, and investigate their photovoltaic performance in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs).
