AB - Six polyurethane networks were synthesized from Boltorn (R) hyperbranched polyester of the second pseudo generation, alpha,omega-dihydroxy-(ethylene oxide-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-ethylene oxide) (EO-PDMS-EO) and 4,4'-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate. The effect of the EO-PDMS-EO content on the properties of prepared polyurethanes was investigated by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), swelling measurements, water contact angle and water absorption. Different techniques (FTIR peak deconvolution, DMTA and SEM) revealed that decrease of EO-PDMS-EO content promotes microphase separation in the synthesized polyurethanes. Samples synthesized with higher EO-PDMS-EO content have more hydrophobic surface and better waterproof performances, but lower crosslinking density. TGA results suggest that thermal stability of the synthesized polyurethane networks in nitrogen is significantly affected by the mutual influence of the crosslinking density and EO-PDMS-EO content. The results obtained in this work indicate that the synthesis of polyurethanes based on hyperbranched polyester and EO-PDMS-EO leads to the creation of networks with good thermal, thermomechanical and surface properties.

AB - Red and white wine polyphenols have been reported to provide substantial health benefits. In this study, the cytotoxic activity of red and white wine polyphenolic extracts and of resveratrol was evaluated against different cancer cell lines-human cervix adenocarcinoma HeLa, human breast adenocarcinoma MDA-MB-361, and human breast carcinoma MDA-MB-453 and normal human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Qualitative and quantitative compositions of wine polyphenolic extracts obtained by fractional vacuum distillation of corresponding wines were determined using spectrophotometric methods and high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection and liquid chromatography with electrospray ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry analysis. It was demonstrated that wine polyphenolic extracts and resveratrol exerted higher cytotoxic activity against HeLa and MDA-MB-453 cells in comparison to MDA-MB-361 cells and unstimulated and stimulated PBMCs. Furthermore, white wine polyphenolic extract exhibited a significantly higher antiproliferative action on cancer cell lines than red wine extract. The presence of condensed or fragmented nuclei in HeLa cells, pretreated with extract of white wine and stained with a mixture of acridine orange and ethidium bromide, pointed to the morphological signs of apoptosis. In addition, HeLa cells in late stages of apoptosis or secondary necrosis were also observed. Results from our study suggest that polyphenolic extracts from red and white wine may have anticarcinogenic potential.

AB - Diverse recombinant immunoreagents specific for TNT–derivatives were tested in different assay forms in order to analyze their specificity and sensitivity. Performance of immunoassays was based on TNP–protein conjugates immobilization on a solid surface. In this work, the detection limit for TNT–analog TNP–Tris was 250 fmol or 87 pg mL−1 (87 ppt), which represents the most sensitive assay published until now, regarding the detection of recombinant antibodies.

AB - The hydriding kinetics of Zr1.02Ni0.98 alloy was examined in dependence on the number of hydriding/dehydriding cycles. The rate constants relating to three subsequent hydriding procedures of an alloy sample, at five temperatures: 423, 448, 473, 498 and 523 K, were determined. The rate constant increases, and the activation energy decreases on each repetition of the hydriding/dehydriding cycle at a given temperature. This behavior was explained by sample crushing, leading to an increase in the surface area accessible to hydrogen.
