Factors influencing the relative rates of the homolytic and heterolytic processes in the lead tetra-acetate oxidation of unbranched primary and secondary aliphatic alcohols have been investigated, with a view to determine the conditions giving optimal yields of cyclic ethers or carbonyl compounds.
