The synthesis of dendritic polymers, i.e., dendrimers (ideally branched) and hyperbranched polymers (non-ideally
branched) and investigation of their properties have gained large scientific attention over the last twenty years [1].
Dendrimers are difficult and expensive to synthesize, while hyperbranched (HB) polymers, having some properties
similar to those of dendrimers, can be prepared at a reasonable cost via pseudo one-step and one-step reaction. Beside
fully reacted (dendritic) units, the structure of HB polymers also contains certain number of linear units, which is the
reason why their inner layers are usually called pseudo generations. Therefore, HB polymers are often considered as
irregular analogues of dendrimers and can be used in applications where the perfect structure of dendrimers is less
important. Properties of these three-dimensional polymers in solution, molten and in solid state are considerably
different from those of analogue linear polymers of the same m...olar mass, due to their specific molecular structure and
large number of end groups.
Hyperbranched polymers synthesized using pseudo one-step and simple one-step procedure should generally
have different properties. However, there are no literature evidences showing how big these differences are. Therefore,
the influence of the procedure for the synthesis on the extent of side reactions, on the rheological properties in solution
and melt, and on the thermal stability of hydroxy-functional aliphatic hyperbranched polyesters (AHBP) was
investigated in this work. In order to do that, two series of AHBP of different pseudo generations were synthesized
using pseudo one-step (samples of the series I) and one-step (samples of the series II) procedure.
